OT - August/September 2020 College Football thread

Each conference has been, one by one, forced into a reactive mode and within days was expected to revise a set of interrelated schedules that had been, in some cases, in place for years.

The results, not surprisingly, are diverse and confusing. This is especially true for the ACC and SEC, which have each added conference opponents to their blueprint of eight league games.

For the ACC, which suspended its two-division format and added Notre Dame as a temporary full member for 2020, the results are far from straightforward. Rather than just adding two extra opponents in cross division play (which the SEC did), the ACC revised each of its member schedules individually.

Notre Dame, Boise State, Iowa State might take issue with that. Louisville & Kentucky as well.

Glancing at that, the Top 10 looks like a plausible Top 10 at some point over the past few decades, that lower 15 though is a tougher sell. I need to go back and see when Iowa State was ranked that high before. They had a cup of coffee at #14 I think a couple years ago mid season. I don't think they've ever started in an AP poll this high. 'mid 70s maybe.

The Angels are awful, my hockey team (the Ducks) wasn't even asked to come back to resume the season and most likely won't start up again until January, and I don't really care about the NBA or the NFL. I was really looking forward to a good Oregon football team brightening up my fall weekends. But no, the world is broken.

I have no desire to watch SEC or ACC football. Maybe I'll tune in to a Big 12 game or two.

I'm sure I'm just failing to grasp the strategic brilliance behind K-State throwing the ball far short of the end zone on the final play.

I don’t think this is Wake's night.

Didn't realize the kick was 4th and 1, I missed the drive before the kick. Yikes. Thought Clawson would be smarter than that.

I don't think the Big-10 disclosed their reasons for no football like the PAC-12 did. Now they're turning around and getting ready to play-looks like the availability of daily rapid tests was the big factor. Have teams been practicing? This is just wild.

I admit I haven't followed it at all, but I think it would be very difficult for the Pac-12 to make it work. There was a coalition of players from the conference that had formed almost a kind of union to make sure the conference did right by them. Without a really well thought out plan for resumption, I don't see a Pac-12 season happening before the end of the year. Heck, even if they moved now, you're talking Halloween as the absolute earliest a season could begin. It's more doable in the Pac-12 than other conferences because there isn't a ton of bad weather out here, but you're looking at either very brief season or a very disjointed one.

UNC vs UNC-Charlotte was cancelled because most of Charlotte's offensive line is in quarantine. I think they should've gone ahead and played. Who needs an offensive line? Isn't the modern quarterback supposed to be extremely mobile?

Baylor was supposed to kick off their football season on Sept. 6 against Ole Miss, but that game was canceled months ago when the SEC elected to play only in-conference games this year. Then, their makeup season opener, scheduled for Sept. 12 against Louisiana Tech, was canceled four days before kickoff due to a spike in COVID-19 cases among Bulldogs players. A desperate search for a non-conference opponent led to a last-second agreement between Houston and Baylor to play this weekend, but that game also had to be postponed because Baylor’s offensive line group was decimated by COVID-19 positives and contact-tracing suspensions.

Baylor is not exactly an outlier. Texas Tech’s football team has had 75 COVID-19 cases since June. Mizzou will be down at least a dozen players for their opener against Alabama. Ed Orgeron revealed earlier this week that most of his players had already been infected with the virus. A total of 16 college football games have now been canceled or postponed this season, with seven of those coming this weekend. In 24 hours, that number will probably be higher.

Good grief. This is why I continue to have just a smidge of distrust for Dan Mullen - things go so well the first drive, Trask is playing perfectly ... and Mullen immediately has to start tinkering with another QB.

To review:

- Ole Miss converts 3rd and 19
- Ole Miss hits 45-yard touchdown pass
- Emory Jones throws interception
- Ole Miss hits long double pass
- Brenton Cox single-handedly prevents a zone read by tackling both players at once
- Cox tips the ball at the line of scrimmage, freshman defensive tackle records an interception

It's COVID ball, baby!

I guess I'm glad that there's a college football season, even if these games feel more like glorified exhibitions than real games to me. But ... maybe losing the season altogether or even the annihilation of the human race would have been worth it just to spare us the Fansville commercials? Just thinking out loud here.
   42. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: September 26, 2020 at 01:19 PM (#5978954)
It's still kind of mind-blowing to see UF with an efficient, explosive, obviously well-coached offense. And look at Kadarius Toney, doing actual Wide Receiver Things.
   43. Brian C Posted: September 26, 2020 at 01:23 PM (#5978955)
A Gator offense in which Kadarius Toney is actually able to get consistently open as a WR is frightening. That route he ran for the 3rd-down conversion was sick - I'd like to see a good replay of the TD but ESPN is apparently not interested.
   44. Brian C Posted: September 26, 2020 at 01:26 PM (#5978956)
The Gators took a penalty to replay a 3rd down when they got a stop deep in Ole Miss territory? That's weird, right?

EDIT: No, they didn't, the ref just didn't announce declining the penalty and the broadcasters were too distracted by the pretty colors of the uniforms to care.

It feels petulant to complain about Mullen's playcalling right now, but when it's third and one and you go empty, it's pretty clear you're going QB run.
   48. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 26, 2020 at 01:30 PM (#5978961)

If Jim McElwain did nothing else at Florida (and there's a very god chance he didn't), recruiting Kyles Trask and Pitts was very helpful.

That play was a complete give-up by Ole Miss - Grimes was wide open and would have scored easily as well. At least Durkin isn't working those guys to death.

   57. Brian C Posted: September 26, 2020 at 02:24 PM (#5978976)
Yeah, I'm a little concerned about the defense as well. It's pretty typical of a Grantham defense to bend a little at the beginnings of games and then make adjustments, so I wasn't too worried earlier in the game. But we're past the point where I'd expect the adjustments to be made.

First game and all but lots of sloppiness.
   58. Brian C Posted: September 26, 2020 at 02:31 PM (#5978979)
I'll probably need to whine about this all season but I don't need these Emory Jones packages. They're completely pointless and they have no upside. The Gators don't need to develop "the future of the program" right now, they need to focus on maximizing what Trask can do for them up to the point where Jones can win the starting job from him.

Mullen just needs to cut this crap out.
   59. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: September 26, 2020 at 02:35 PM (#5978980)
I assume the Jones stuff is partially about personnel management -- keep Jones engaged, keep him from transferring due to lack of playing time. If he stays, you're set up pretty well next year at quarterback. If he leaves, your starting quarterback in 2021 is Anthony Richardson.

Besides, I'm generally OK with the Emory drives. He really is a great runner, and he throws well enough not to be a disaster -- the interception earlier in the game is one of those plays you just need to swallow and take the sack, which is something you learn with experience. And up 17 points against a weak Ole Miss defense is a low-risk opportunity.

Now, I assume we won't be seeing Emory Jones drives in the third quarter against Georgia.
   60. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: September 26, 2020 at 02:40 PM (#5978981)
On the other hand, Pierce and Davis have both looked pretty good today, so maybe you don't need Jones to manufacture a running game.
   61. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: September 26, 2020 at 03:01 PM (#5978983)
Definitely a bit of a soft roughing the passer call, but it did look like the Ole Miss player had a chance to disengage from Trask and kept driving after the ball was out.
   62. Brian C Posted: September 26, 2020 at 03:16 PM (#5978985)
Fun fact: this is the first time the Gators have scored 50 against an SEC opponent other than Vandy since they did it to South Carolina in 2008 (they've done it to Vandy twice since then, last year and 2010).
