OT - August/September 2021 College Football thread

Bobby Bowden, the longtime Florida State football coach who ranks second all time in Division I wins, has died, the school announced Sunday morning.

He was 91.

...

Bobby Bowden was diagnosed with a terminal medical condition in July. He did not disclose what the condition was at the time, although [son] Terry later told reporters that it was pancreatic cancer.

No Nebraska in the top 60. The "major power" ship sailed long ago, but it looks like the "minor power" ship is leaving port, too. Unless the 'Huskers have a unexpectedly good season, I can't imagine the Scott Frost era will last beyond this year.

I'm not sure what an 'unexpectedly good season' even looks like. I can come up with a scenario where they go 9-3, I can come up with one where they go 3-9. Either seems possible.

I don't follow college football closely anymore, but looking at Nebraska's schedule I think a winning record would be unexpected and 9-3 would be a freaking miracle.

I agree with this in terms of prediction, but I also strongly suspect that any chance Nebraska has of regaining even "minor power" status depends on having some patience with Scott Frost. He was the favorite son and the chosen messiah; firing him after 4 seasons will basically let every credible future candidate know to stay the hell away if they have any other options, and then they'll be stuck cycling through the Bill Callahans of the world again.

Well, it depends on where you put them in terms of talent and potential of course. If they are the 20th best team in the country next season and they lose to those better by FEI and win against those below, they are 8-4. If you don't think Buffalo will be the 6th best team in the country again, or they can beat Iowa (14th) at home, they can get to 9-3.

Nebraska is nowhere near the 20th best team in the country in talent. They stink. Both of their lines stink.

You can point out some on-paper recruiting "wins" in recent years, because they somehow land every guy with a lot of stars who only have offers from mediocre programs.

Texas fell a similar distance. Nebraska can still make it back if they spend enough money.

Yeah, last year they finished 82nd in FEI. Now, things were screwy enough that I would take anything any rating system says about last year with a big heap of salt (except Alabama being #1 is basically a factual statement), but the last time Nebraska even finished in the Top 40 in FEI was 20*14* (probably not a coincidence that was Bo's final year). Just making a bowl game would be a step forward and something like 7-5 while being reasonably competitive in most of the losses would be a big success IMO.

Well, if every team is doomed to be the team they were last season, then the discussion is pointless, isn't it?

By recruiting rankings, Nebraska was 23rd in 2018, 17th in 2019, and 20th last year. That should put them around 20th in the country in talent.

And if every team just plays the way their recruiting rankings say they should play, the discussion is pretty pointless too, isn't it?

At first blush it seemed the purpose of this alliance between the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 was to effectively lock the SEC out of major non-conference games, with the exception of the in-state rivalries, but I fail to see the point if they're going to be working around previously scheduled games through 2036.

they see the writing on the wall, and they're trying to consolidate their power before the SEC can break away from the NCAA.

what they don't realize (yet) is that when the SEC breaks away from the NCAA, they're going to take ohio state, michigan, USC, florida state, oregon, etc., with them, and these conferences are going to be shattered anyway.

Illinois' quarterback is Artur Sitkowski, who wasn't good enough for Rutgers.

I remember Sitkowski in high school, as he was supposedly being heavily recruited by Florida until the Gators cooled on him. And that's the first UF hijack of the college football season.

Nebraska stinks. Scott Frost is a terrible coach. He is in his 4th year, and the Huskers still constantly make dumb mistakes. Bielema has been at Illinois one game and has his culture in place.

Nebraska stinks.

   21. Brian C Posted: August 28, 2021 at 08:08 PM (#6036895)
Honestly I was kinda rooting for Frost to get it together. I don't even like Nebraska, but college football in general and the B1G in particular would be greatly benefitted by a good Nebraska team.

But there's no sugarcoating what an bad loss this was today. And I don't see where Nebraska can possibly go after Frost, he was supposed to be the guy that turned it all around. It's like Michigan with Harbaugh, there's going to be a lot of long-term psychological damage there that will be hard to move on from.
   22. Meatwad Posted: August 28, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6036909)
I assume Scott Frost is fired by the end of September based on how today went.
   23. karkface killah Posted: August 29, 2021 at 05:28 PM (#6036996)
I was at the game yesterday. Nebraska didn’t look faster or stronger than Illinois. That’s a massive issue in Year 4. They basically have to be perfect on offense. Guys weren’t open and when they were Martinez isn’t good enough to hit them.

Defense played ok. Certainly good enough to win. Lost power once they had to be on the field all game in the heat. Give Bielema credit.

Illinois best player was its punter.
   24. greenback used to say live and let live Posted: August 29, 2021 at 10:47 PM (#6037048)
It's like Michigan with Harbaugh, there's going to be a lot of long-term psychological damage there that will be hard to move on from.

This comparison has been bouncing around the Internet, but Harbaugh has had three 10-win seasons at Michigan. That doesn't mean nearly as much as it did in the 1970s, and Harbaugh's reign has been disappointing, particularly to the entitled fans who think winning lots of games before World War II means something to the rest of the world. But Scott Frost hasn't had a winning season at Nebraska yet. If you're the Michigan AD, the probability of getting a Scott Frost is kinda the reason you don't fire Harbaugh.

That said, it would be nice if Jim Harbaugh's DC started recruiting cornerbacks who can run the 40 faster than I can.

Always good when ballsy decisions to go for fourth downs are rewarded. Especially when the booth is expressing bewilderment that an underdog already trailing by 10 would go for 4th-and-1 in its own territory.

That was as much grabbing on a ball that wasn't as far overthrown as the Olave gift interference.

Regardless, the game's been turned on its head. 14-10 Gophers at the half. ROW.

After a lightning delay of 2:45, UCF forces a quick Boise punt, then marches right down to the goal line, only to have Gabriel woefully underthrow a POP pass with a man open in the end zone for a length-of-the-field pick-six.

Miami punts to avoid giving Alabama the dreaded short field, and Alabama scores a touchdown anyway because "you're already having trouble stopping Alabama." 17-0, and I write, "Guess I can put both eyes on tennis" in my notebook.

To the extent anyone had any hope of Miami making this game remotely competitive, getting stopped on fourth and goal from the one feels like the end of that dream.

Or maybe the 94-yard touchdown pass for 'Bama will do that.

An encouraging first drive for the Gators. With Trask gone, I was really worried that Mullen would swap out the Everything Works offense for the Emory Tebow offense, but that first drive was a nice mix of play calls and honestly not much different than a lot of Trask drives looked.

Yes yes, I know, FAU. But it's the thought that counts.
   54. Brian C Posted: September 04, 2021 at 08:09 PM (#6038331)
Still a little suspicious of the defense after the first FAU possession. For most of the drive, it looked like they were continuing with the Afghan Army defense that served them so well last year, but then FAU got cute, their backup QB tripped on 1st down, they took a penalty ... and then the Gators surprised us all by successfully defending a obvious screen pass on third and long.

Willie Taggert vs. Todd Grantham seems like a real battle of wits, IMO.
   55. Brian C Posted: September 04, 2021 at 08:11 PM (#6038333)
Feel like the jury's still out on the new end zone designs. Seems unnecessary but might grow on me.

Also FAU's helmets are awful. Florida is not a shapely enough state to be on a helmet, and I will fight anyone over this.

Urban Meyer looks almost as old as Spurrier these days.

Well, as the game has gone on, it's become more and more apparent that Emory Jones is not ready for primetime. He's making poor decisions, poor throws, and seems incapable of looking downfield. Granted, it's not clear that much is open down there, but Jones has only made I think 2 deep throws; 1 was woefully short and picked off, the other was nowhere close. This offense has devolved to what it was in the Muschamp/McElwain years.

This is not a hard opponent - he should look better than this even if he kinda sucks in big-picture SEC terms.

...aaaand just as I post that, Richardson comes in and leads them down for a TD, crucially connecting on a deep throw to convert a 4th down.

I'm not saying Richardson should be the #1, but ... let's just say, I'm way happier to see him come into a game than I was when Jones came in as a "change of pace" last season.

So I can’t tell if UGa has the best defense in the history of college football, or if Clemson’s offensive line is just five dudes they found down at the Y.

Uiagalelei holding the ball has been a large part of the problem.

Bielema has been at Illinois one game and has his culture in place.

Care to revise your statement? :)

I was out of the house during the UF game, and I managed to avoid details before catching up on DVR later last night. That was...not an encouraging performance from Jones. I really don't want to go back to the Muschamp/McElwain passing offenses. I thought that nightmare was over.
   62. Brian C Posted: September 05, 2021 at 04:39 PM (#6038385)
The problem is that Richardson very clearly can't throw either - he's got an arm but when Mullen had him throw deep late in the game, he was nowhere close. He was just heaving it downfield without any idea where it was going.

But he has the speed and the strength that he could probably run the Tebow offense effectively. That 73-yard TD was really something else; Jones doesn't have anything like that initial burst of speed that Richardson showed on that play. Personally I think those garbage-time long throws that Mullen dialed up for Richardson would have been better used - both for Richardson and the receivers - on the kinds of intermediate routes that move the chains. But then, I'm not the "QB whisperer".

In other news, congrats to Montana!

Florida State's linebackers suck, so Mayer running wild is to be expected.

By all accounts Jones has a pretty big arm. You can build a pretty solid offense around a good running game, short passes and fairly frequent bombs. It won't look like last year's "Kyle Trask hits one of five receivers running completely wide open" offense, but it can work. Problem is I didn't see much of a deep passing game with Jones yesterday, and I feel like if you try to do that with Richardson you'll hit two or three deep passes a game to go along with 18 incompletions. And I'm pretty skeptical these guys have figured out how to actually run block when the opponent isn't FAU.

On the plus side, it's going to be fun watching FSU be terrible again all season.

Montana's Guinness commercial with clips from the Cotton Bowl reminds me: He was dreadful in that game and had a lot less to do with the comeback than popular myth would suggest.

Florida State just ran three consecutive screens on their first drive and I think they were all tied for worst executed screen pass of all time.

Well, the good news is that we're sure to learn a lot from this week's game against ... South Florida? Sigh.

FSU's years-long offensive line disaster abated somewhat last year when it at least managed to become competent at run blocking. Early going suggests it still can't pass protect for ####.

I get irrationally annoyed when quarterbacks throw deep on third and short (It's four yards! It's really difficult for defenses to stop a four-yard pass! Just convert, dammit!), but it worked for Notre Dame there.
   71. Mike A Posted: September 05, 2021 at 09:32 PM (#6038437)
Not a bad first half for the Noles. It's no secret they're a ways away, but it looks like Norvell has them moving in the right direction. Better recruiting, better play calling, etc, etc. We'll just forget the Willie Taggart years ever happened, kinda like Rocky V or The Godfather Part III.

As for Bobby, I'm gonna miss him. He was always friendly to me even though he didn't know me from Adam, and in many ways he was Tallahassee. RIP.

Always perplexed when a defender with the sideline to help him manages to jump outside and let the ball carrier cut inside.

If FSU wins this behind Milton, it becomes one of the greatest sports stories in history.
   75. Brian C Posted: September 05, 2021 at 11:19 PM (#6038448)
It annoys me to no end that FSU came back to tie this game, but on the other hand, I'm always happy for Notre Dame to be exposed as overrated. I'm definitely more annoyed than happy, though.
   76. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 05, 2021 at 11:21 PM (#6038449)
Notre Dame blowing a lead they should have easily held, but then beating FSU in overtime, feels like a nice combination of making Notre Dame look bad and breaking Florida State's heart.

That missed FG by FSU was incredibly awesome, but obviously ND deserves to miss this FG after not even trying to shorten the field.

   82. Brian C Posted: September 05, 2021 at 11:35 PM (#6038456)
Oh well. I want to see FSU lose badly enough that I'm content with that, but there's no way ND makes it through the season without karma taking a big huge bite out of their ass after how that went down.

Sigh. Well, good effort by the Noles at least. This one could have been big, though.

Lot of recruits there tonight, hopefully they liked what they saw. The atmosphere was the best I've seen in a while.

Fsu wins if milton starts.
   86. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 05, 2021 at 11:59 PM (#6038460)
With an offensive line that can't pass block, there's a case for Travis starting over Milton in a run-heavy -- not, like, service-academy heavy; maybe 2:1 or something -- offense that uses Travis's just-good-enough passing as a change of pace. But FSU was passing on like 60% of downs* prior to falling behind 18 -- it ironically then started running the ball a ton on the 15-play drive that began the rally -- which seems to obviously call for Milton at the helm.

* Granted, some portion of that distribution is surely RPOs, but there shouldn't be so many discretionary plays that it results in the opposite ratio you'd ideally be seeing.

Questions for today:

1) Ohio State - maybe not actually all that great?
2) Washington v. Michigan - a loss is more damaging for which team?
3) Why are FBS teams still allowed to schedule these stupid games against crappy FCS teams (with all due respect to the mighty Montana Grizzlies)?
4) Does Nebraska beat Buffalo (not so sure, are we)?
5) Iowa will thump Iowa State, right?
6) Can the Gators survive a grueling early-season road test?
   88. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:30 PM (#6039192)
I know it's not fair to expect a defense to pitch a shutout, even against an overmatched offense -- everyone has a good drive now and again. But it's not super encouraging to watch USF relentlessly march down the field on the Gators.

Especially since their offensive coordinator is apparently Charlie Weis's kid.
   89. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:35 PM (#6039193)
Joel Klatt acting like the problem with Ohio State's defense on that fourth down was the middle linebacker getting caught up in traffic, as though Verdell ran a pass route and nobody had him in coverage. It was a toss play! The problem was the guy on the edge darting inside and letting him get outside uncontested.
   90. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:39 PM (#6039195)
Well now, you just gotta love that Richardson TD pass.

Pretty drool-worthy, I have to say.

Avery Helm at cornerback: less drool-worthy.
   93. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:49 PM (#6039198)
Dan Orlovsky is straight off of the generic analyst assembly line. ESPN must have some kind of indoctrination cult that they send washed up mediocre QBs to, it's amazing how completely alike all these guys are.

   95. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:56 PM (#6039200)
Jones and Henderson with a bit of a callback to the Trask-Pitts (or Kyle-Kyle) deep ball connection there.
   96. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 01:57 PM (#6039201)
That was a nice TD throw by Jones, too. When it left his hands, my heart sank ... his feet weren't really set and he seemed to just loft it up there, seemed like a recipe for an underthrown ball and probable pick. But it was perfect!
   97. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 02:08 PM (#6039202)
Meanwhile, Tennessee has fallen behind at halftime to Pitt, which ... yikes.

Another game that I'm curious about is Vandy-Colorado State - two teams that got waxed by FCS opponents last week.

I can't believe that it's 2021 and announcers are still utterly flummoxed at the idea of a team playing two QBs. Orlovsky helpfully points out that it's manageable as long as "both guys are playing well."

As much talent as Ohio State has recruited over the years, you'd think they'd be able to just stumble their way into a competent defense occasionally.

I was right here with you at the time, but credit where due - the defense has been solid aside from that one USF field goal drive.
