OT - August/September 2021 College Football thread

Bobby Bowden, the longtime Florida State football coach who ranks second all time in Division I wins, has died, the school announced Sunday morning.

He was 91.

...

Bobby Bowden was diagnosed with a terminal medical condition in July. He did not disclose what the condition was at the time, although [son] Terry later told reporters that it was pancreatic cancer.

Man, the Gators look really good. I find this really encouraging, provided there isn't some wild jump in the quality of the opponent between weeks two and three. Let me check the schedule. But first, I'll take a long sip of this cool beverage.....

I just checked - some out of state school? I'll have to read the scouting reports later in the week, I guess.

All right, halftime ... gotta go do my bear check.

Boo, Emory. Boo.
   107. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:09 PM (#6039217)
Sadly, no. We've had a bear (or maybe more than one) hanging around my apartment complex for the past week and a half or so and I guess trying to get into the dumpsters, and understandably the concern is that they are or are becoming conditioned to humans. So the Fish and Game Commission has installed a trap behind my building, and I keep hoping to see a bear caught in there. But after three days, still nothing. Not sure if it's a black bear or grizzly or maybe both hanging around, haven't seen a bear on the premises myself yet.

Emory Jones, yikes ... I was really pulling for you today, man.

I'll say this for Mullen -- every time they get him on camera talking to a player, especially a quarterback, it seems like he's actually teaching and explaining things and not just screaming about the dumb interception.

Ohio State and Oregon are both moving up and down the field at will -- both approaching 500 yards of offense early in the fourth -- with the game being decided by who managed to cash in its many scoring opportunities.
   110. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:18 PM (#6039220)
On the other hand, maybe some screaming is in order.
   111. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:20 PM (#6039221)
OK, time for a more serious intervention - that INT was even worse than the first one. And the first one was awful but still just essentially a rookie mistake. But Jones had all day to find someone on that throw, and threw not just way late but a mile behind his target. It's just the kind of throw that makes me question if this guy fundamentally has what it takes.

Trailing by 14 with eight minutes left, Ohio State stays alive with a crossing route for a 15-yard touchdown on 4th-and-6.
   113. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:34 PM (#6039225)
Self-destruction on the ensuing drive. Oregon with a drop on second down, then a false start forcing 3rd-and-12, resulting in a punt. OSU was on the brink literally a minute ago, and now at midfield with a chance to tie.
   114. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:36 PM (#6039226)
Orlovsky seems oddly agitated by the fact that Jones and Richardson are friendly.

My FOX station has cut away from OSU-Oregon for the start of CU-A&M. Which I guess I can't complain about, since I live in Boulder, but it's still a bit annoying.
   116. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:41 PM (#6039229)
Ohio State self-destructs right back: overthrow of a sure touchdown, a slip coming out of a break, then a holding penalty on 3rd-and-10, leading to a punt with 5:45 left.
   117. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2021 at 03:55 PM (#6039232)
After another Oregon punt, Stroud holds the ball too long on first down at midfield and takes a sack, then he nearly throws a pick when Oregon drops eight in coverage on 2nd-and-18. Oregon drops eight again on third down, and after finding no one open, Stroud rolls right and this time does get intercepted.

Ohio State with three timeouts, uses two after getting stops on first and second down. Then Oregon picks up the first down with a play fake and toss in the flat. Dude went out of bounds with 2:37 left, so Ohio State's one timeout is enough to keep 30 seconds on the clock as Oregon faces 4th-and-1.
   118. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2021 at 04:03 PM (#6039236)
So ... two games, and two games where Richardson has pretty clearly outplayed Jones against vastly inferior competition.

Richardson came up limping after that TD run, so that's not good! But if it's not serious (looks like a tweaked hammy), then what are we doing with Jones? I was content to give him a mulligan last week, but I feel like the results are starting to speak extremely loudly for themselves.

Choke on that, FSU fans who thought last week was meaningful.

I think it was meaningful. The atmosphere was phenomenal, which should help in recruiting. Everyone knows FSU wasn't going to be an overnight fix, and even if Notre Dame was overrated (as always), it was still a great, fun game. And it drew a huge rating.

The 2022 Class is top 10, arguably top 5 as of now. That's a fair step up from the past few years.

And as Bobby used to say, he'd rather be a good recruiter than a good coach.
   122. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2021 at 05:42 PM (#6039244)
Toledo might've wanted to consider dropping to the ground inside the five. I go on and on about not trusting college kickers, but I'd rather have a glorified extra point to win on the final play than give the ball back leading by five with 1:35 left.

It's Comcast cable with gigabyte speed. But for whatever reason, the Peacock app is slow as heck and sports can be a slideshow.

Comcast also doesn't have the ACC Network, so I can't (legally) watch FSU, though perhaps that's for the best.

I dunno - at the moment, I'm feeling like every FSU fan ought to be forced to watch this game. I don't seriously expect it to stay close, but then again, Jacksonville State has given them trouble before!

Man coverage and one safety deep. With six seconds left and 59 yards to go. There's just no excuse.

I just can't even with that play. Shades of Tyrie Cleveland - a combination of "WOW!" and "HOW??" - both an amazing accomplishment and complete bafflement that such a thing was even made possible by the defense.

No, there really isn't. Bad coaching, dumb penalties, poor effort...the list is long.

And here I thought FSU was headed in the right direction. This is just depressing.

Meanwhile, Michigan crushed Washington ... looks like Oregon, UCLA and maaaaaaybe USC (currently losing to Stanford by two scores at halftime, btw) are the only teams in the Pac-12 that can plausibly be described as even "decent".
   141. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 12, 2021 at 12:32 AM (#6039289)
Jacksonville State had a timeout left, so the only thing I can imagine is that FSU was too concerned about giving up a 20-yard pass that could have set up a literal last second tying field goal? Maybe?
   142. Brian C Posted: September 12, 2021 at 12:56 AM (#6039294)
Jacksonville State had a timeout left, so the only thing I can imagine is that FSU was too concerned about giving up a 20-yard pass that could have set up a literal last second tying field goal? Maybe?

Sure looks like it - FSU had 7 defenders between 10-20 yards from the line of scrimmage at the time the ball was released. In hindsight, rushing 4 seems a bit indulgent - why not drop 9? - but one of the studio guys said that they should have just stacked up a bunch of guys at the goal line, and obviously that wouldn't have been a good idea, either.

Also, when the ball was caught, FSU DB Jammie Robinson was running just about even with WR Ahmad Edwards. But Robinson pulls up while Edwards keeps after the play, and Edwards ends up delivering the final block. Could Robinson have saved the game if he'd kept going? We'll never know!

Still, worth repeating that this was just a wonderful play by Jacksonville State. Perfect throw, great individual effort to break tackles, and the Edwards block to seal it. Brain death by FSU, no doubt. But the JSU dudes earned it.

I can't believe Oregon won against OSU without Thibodeaux in the lineup, but that did not look like a vintage OSU performance. I love the way Oregon's offensive line played, and their defense was incredibly good against the run (and, not coincidentally, on 4th downs). But I thought Ohio State would at least tie it up. They had receivers open on every pass play but just couldn't quite execute.

I wonder where this OSU team will end up this season. Penn State will be tough and they'll face a tough team in the conference championship, whether it's Iowa or Wisconsin or someone else. As an Oregon fan, I hope OSU piles up the victories to make this win look better, and because the Pac-12 has an obnoxious habit of knocking itself out of playoff contention. Oregon will probably lose a game to a tough opponent at some point (UCLA, Utah) and also lay an egg against an inferior opponent (Stanford, WSU), but if they can manage to get through the season with one loss and take the conference championship, it will be hard to leave them out of the playoff with this win on their resume.

Nebraska-Oklahoma in September. Blech.
   146. Brian C Posted: September 18, 2021 at 12:24 PM (#6040272)
Nebraska false starts twice (!) on their first offensive play of the game. They seem well-prepared.

ETA: OU counters by dropping 8 on 3rd-and-long and letting a Nebraska receiver get wide open over the middle of the field anyway.
   147. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: September 18, 2021 at 01:11 PM (#6040275)
I've attended seven OU v Nebraska games, while this is great to see, it's such a reminder of how much these are TV networks and not conferences.

Would have been cool to somehow play this in Nov.
   148. Brian C Posted: September 18, 2021 at 01:31 PM (#6040278)
I'm annoyed with the network's continued insistence that it's the "50th anniversary" of the 1971 game. Yes, I know that it's the 50th anniversary year, but it seems like they're trying very hard to give the impression that it's the exact anniversary date. GameDay was doing this earlier, too.

At any rate, at halftime my impression is that Scott Frost is more interested in avoiding a blowout than actually trying to win this game; that was a shockingly conservative gameplan on offense for a heavy underdog on the road. I understand that Martinez is not really a QB he can trust to run an aggressive offense, but as we're seeing, the alternative is to play for FG attempts. The irony is that the defense is holding up their end of the deal, so with any life on offense at all, the Huskers would be in good shape.
   149. Brian C Posted: September 18, 2021 at 02:26 PM (#6040282)
Ah, the ol' 4-point touchdown.
   150. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 18, 2021 at 03:07 PM (#6040285)
Nebraska somehow down just seven with about a minute left in the game. Poised to get the ball back.
   151. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 18, 2021 at 03:11 PM (#6040287)
I mean, your odds aren't great when you're down by seven with a minute left and you're on your own 10-yard-line with no timeouts, but Martinez getting sacked twice and hitting a seven-yard pass over the middle of the field on the first three downs really cuts the odds even further.
   152. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: September 18, 2021 at 03:26 PM (#6040288)

Shocked it was a game.

West Virginia, leading 27-21 with 2:20 left, faces a 3rd-and-10 and throws an interception on a screen pass, setting up Virginia Tech at the 17.
   154. Brian C Posted: September 18, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6040290)
That was an upset ripe for the taking, and Nebraska just didn't have either the discipline or the stones to pull it off. I'm sure there will be observers who will think this game shows that the Huskers are making progress under Frost. To me, though, this is the kind of game that makes me think that the problem here isn't that the rebuild is so enormous, but rather that Frost maybe just isn't actually a very good coach. But hey, it ended up being close, and that was plainly what Frost was trying to do all along, so mission accomplished.

Also in the history of the game, there's maybe never been a better example than Martinez of a QB who's "just good enough to get you beat."

Well, that first UF drive was a bit of a mixed bag. They moved the ball, albeit assisted by some Alabama penalties. Then they stalled out before the goal line. Suggests that the Alabama defense can be vulnerable but UF will need to execute at a very high rate in order to put scoring drives together.

I remember after the first game against FAU, we were a little hesitant to believe that the rushing offense was for real. But they've held up in this game today, and the line has been pretty reasonable in pass protection, too.
   167. Brian C Posted: September 18, 2021 at 05:48 PM (#6040319)
Graphic just showed that Alabama went three-and-out on 3 straight possessions for the first time in 4 years? That's insane - both that it went that long, and that it was this Gators defense that finally caused it.

Pass interference can be a little tricky sometimes, but, uh, that was not exactly a cheap pass interference penalty for Cox there.

Asking him to drop back into coverage on back-to-back plays feels like going to the well once too often.

Before the game, I couldn't have reasonably asked for much more than to get the ball back in the 4th quarter with a chance to tie it up. And it's way more than I could have reasonably hoped for when it was 21-3 in the 1st quarter.

So ... make something happen, guys.

Clemson stuffs a shovel pass on 4th-and-goal to win 14-6.

Or not, as Clemson fumbles the ball for a safety when all it needed to do was run a single play to kill the clock.

The Pac-12 is such a mess. Yeah, Oregon had a really nice win at OSU last week, but they looked not at all convincing in the first half against an FCS team today (and OSU has looked fairly shaky themselves). The two teams in the conference that have looked good thus far (ASU and UCLA) are about to lose to non Power-5 teams. Every other team in the conference has lost a bad game already.

Normally a win on the road against OSU would buy you an in-conference loss in the playoff conversation as long as you win all the other ones including the conference championship. I don't know that it does this year given this OSU team and the putridity of the Pac-12.
