OT - August/September 2022 College Football thread

I’m sure the Germans have a word for an utter loss of enthusiasm brought about by conference realignment.

   201. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:35 PM (#6095684)
Ah, there's the Kentucky we know and love.
   202. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:36 PM (#6095685)
Haha. For all the fawning over the "culture" that Stoops has instilled up at UK, you can always count on them to try as hard as they can to lose games.
   203. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:37 PM (#6095686)
Goddammit, another kickoff return penalty. Come on already
   204. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:37 PM (#6095687)
Dear lord, another holding penalty on a kickoff.

Also, are Weston and Henderson really the best they can do for returners? Two slow possession receivers? No fast guys who you don't trust on offense yet?
   205. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:38 PM (#6095688)
How da fuq
   206. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:39 PM (#6095689)
Well that wasn't great.
   207. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:39 PM (#6095690)
To be fair, that's a pretty great catch by their DE.
   208. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:41 PM (#6095691)
Yeah I wanna be mad, but it just seems like a kinda fluky thing.

The ESPN play-by-play guy just said that Levis looks "like some kind of Adonis" while lining up pre-snap. Get a room already.
   209. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:42 PM (#6095692)
Man, that is a terrible, TERRIBLE call.

Like, how on Earth do you throw a flag for that? Seriously. The dude had the ball in his hand at the initial contact.
   210. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:45 PM (#6095693)
Well, it's hard to know how that penalty works, because it's called so inconsistently. But it seems foolish to call it when the QB is outside of the box. If that same play had happened with the QB in a traditional drop-back posture, I could see it. But when he's rolling out, come on.
   211. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:46 PM (#6095694)
Kentucky's special teams are LSU-ish.
   212. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 08:54 PM (#6095696)
As first halfs go, that was somewhat less inspiring than last week's game. But I feel OK about this game overall ... not that sense of dread that I had from the opening snap last year.

But I really don't love giving up on that possession before halftime. I know they didn't have any timeouts, but make something happen!
   213. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:22 PM (#6095699)
I'll file that tip drill completion under, "%*($ happens."
   214. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:29 PM (#6095700)
Kinda looked like UK had never practiced that 3rd down play before. Anyway, holding them to a FG there seems huge.

So, halfway through the 3rd quarter, it's a tie game even though Richardson has been awful. Feels like it will only take a small course correction to win this.
   215. Brian White Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:37 PM (#6095701)
Well that wasn't a great throw.
   216. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:38 PM (#6095702)
Jesus. No way around it, that was just a terrible INT by AR. Obviously a miscommunication between him and the receiver, but even still it was covered.
   217. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:39 PM (#6095703)
Gonna need a bigger course correction.
   218. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:39 PM (#6095704)
I meant a course correction in the other direction!
   219. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 09:45 PM (#6095705)
Wasn't that incompletion kinda maybe Zanders's fault though? He got to the sticks and wasn't ready for the ball, that doesn't seem like it's all on the QB. Hard to know, but it looked to me like AR put that ball right where it was supposed to be.
   220. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:02 PM (#6095709)
Georgia Southern up 35-28 on Nebraska in the 3rd, at least Frost gets to say that he outlasted the Queen.
   221. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:04 PM (#6095710)
Well, I don't love the execution on that play, but hella respect to Napier for going for it. Needed to be done.
   222. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:05 PM (#6095713)
McElroy saying that Napier "could sense that his defense was about out of gas." Presumably he sensed this by actually watching how this second half has played out.
   223. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:08 PM (#6095714)
Stoops helpfully settles for the FG to keep the Gators in the game, and then it's wide left anyway. LOL.

This is the advantage you get playing UK, they will always give you as many chances as they can to beat them.
   224. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:09 PM (#6095715)
Liked the decision to go for it on fourth down, didn't like the play call at all -- not sure why you're calling on Richardson to make a lightning quick and accurate throw, considering everything that has happened so far.

Thank goodness for The College Kicker, at least.
   225. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:11 PM (#6095716)

Well, any throw needs to be accurate, but I don't think it needed to be lightning quick. Richardson just rushed it. Probably would have been there if he'd just waited a split-sec, but he tried to throw it out there before the WR even made his break inside on the slant.
   226. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:13 PM (#6095718)
While we're complaining about play calls though, I'm over these short WR screens. Richardson isn't any more accurate with those, they're not going anywhere when he does complete them, and he's already thrown a pick-6 on a short route. Gotta be downfield or bust, IMO.
   227. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:19 PM (#6095719)
Well, this has been a profoundly discouraging game.
   228. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:22 PM (#6095720)
Yeah, and it's mostly discouraging because Richardson has been so awful after he was so great last week. Other than that, it's played out as expected - the defense hasn't been great here in the 2nd half, but I think we all knew that was going to be an issue all year.
   229. Brian C Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:33 PM (#6095722)
Welp, Gators have no one to blame but themselves tonight. Can't say they didn't have all the chances in the world to win this game.
   230. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:34 PM (#6095723)
That was just a rather uncomfortably Treon Harris-esque performance by Richardson tonight.
   231. Howie Menckel Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:35 PM (#6095724)
Hawaii +52 1/2 points at Michigan (NOT kidding) might have tempted some degens, but it's 42-0 near halftime so that may not end well for Rainbow Warriors backers.....

:)
   232. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 10, 2022 at 10:38 PM (#6095725)
Ugh, Jones and Griffin.

I was looking forward to Baylor-BYU.
   233. Pirate Joe Posted: September 10, 2022 at 11:44 PM (#6095731)
It was frankly a miracle Pitt got even that far after Slovis got hurt.

In the second half, with Patti in the game, Pitt ran 16 first down plays. The first three were handoffs between the tackles to Abanikanda. On the fourth handoff to Abanikanda they got called for holding, and on 1st and 18 Patti threw a pass. The next 12 of those plays were all handoffs to Abanikanda, all between the tackles. So 15 of the 16 first down plays in the second half and overtime were handoffs to the same running back, and the one outlier only came after that same play got called back by a penalty.

I mean literally every person in the stadium knew what they were doing. And obviously Tennessee figured it out, because the last seven of those plays, from the end of the 3rd quarter through the end of the game "gained" a total of minus four yards.

If Patti's injury had him so impaired that he couldn't do anything on first down other than to hand the ball to the same back time after time then they simply had to get him out of there.
   234. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 11, 2022 at 02:05 AM (#6095739)
You're BYU. Your kicker misses from 35 at the end of regulation, and then Baylor misses a field goal on the first possession of overtime, so naturally you turtle, content to let him try again from 37 yards.

That he unleashes a giant hook is both predictable and deserved.
   235. Brian C Posted: September 11, 2022 at 01:45 PM (#6095757)
Speaking of predictable and deserved - Scott Frost fired by Nebraska.

Darren Heitner @DarrenHeitner
I wouldn’t feel too bad for Scott Frost. His buyout is $15 million. It would have been $7.5 million less if Nebraska waited until October 1. Let’s remember this the next time someone says that schools can’t afford to pay players.

Jon Bois @jon_bois
as the nfl season gets going, some teams have already scored a touchdown, while other offenses appear as though they need a touch-up! retweet this if you have ever started a forest fire
   238. Pirate Joe Posted: September 11, 2022 at 07:53 PM (#6095787)
I would imagine that Frost and Nebraska came to some sort of agreement about that $7.5 million, because firing him now or firing him on October 1 wasn't really going to change their season.

You would imagine wrong. Alberts confirmed that UNL is paying the whole damn thing.

I was wrong. I couldn't conceive that someone could be that dumb, but here we are.

But hey, good news Nebraska fans! That's the guy that will be hiring your next coach!

   241. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 16, 2022 at 07:33 PM (#6096525)
I'm not sure Cunningham is the "most electrifying" quarterback in this game.
   242. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 16, 2022 at 07:43 PM (#6096527)
Case in point.

If the Travis injury is serious, FSU's season is basically over.
   244. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 16, 2022 at 11:29 PM (#6096576)
Shocked that FSU came back. Rodemaker had looked horrible every time he'd seen the field, including to begin with tonight.
   245. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 12:49 PM (#6096621)
The play-by-play guy on the Texas State/Baylor game just said that he hates that targeting is such a "penile" thing.
   246. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 17, 2022 at 01:37 PM (#6096625)
That does sound like it should be a penalty.
   247. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 17, 2022 at 03:25 PM (#6096636)
Purdue-Syracuse, a 9-3 game through nearly three quarters, suddenly turned on its head by five touchdowns in 10 minutes.
   248. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 03:47 PM (#6096638)
Coaches outsmarting themselves: Indiana down 30-22, scores a TD with 47 seconds left. Set up for the 2-point conversion.

Western Kentucky uses both of their remaining timeouts to, I dunno, ice the conversion try, I guess. Who knows? Indiana converts anyway.

So, tie game, WKU gets the ball back with 47 seconds left. Even more amusingly, the IU kickoff even goes out of bounds. Gee, it sure would be nice to have some timeouts left, wouldn't it??

WKU ends up getting a few yards, partly thanks to an Indiana PI, but end up settling for a 44-yard FG. Of course, College Kicker Syndrome kicks in, the kick goes way right, and the game goes to OT.

Way to go, anonymous WKU coach.

   249. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 17, 2022 at 03:53 PM (#6096639)
What a finish in Syracuse. Purdue scores to go up 29-25 in the final minute, then commits two unsportsmanlike penalties and has to kick off from its own 10. Syracuse starts at midfield, moves to the 40 after defensive holding on 3rd-and-10, moves to the 25 after pass interference on a go route, then hits on a corner route with seven seconds left.
   250. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 17, 2022 at 04:51 PM (#6096647)
BYU needs to fire its kicker out of a cannon.

And then Purdue committed two MORE penalties to let Syracuse kick off from the Purdue 35!

My question is: with several seconds left, and Purdue with no timeouts, and Cuse kicking off from the Purdue 35, isn't an onside kick the obviously right move there? Even if it doesn't work, Purdue is starting from their 25.
   252. a brief article regarding 57i66135 Posted: September 17, 2022 at 06:12 PM (#6096653)
i logged in to complain about a pass interference call. it was one of those underthrown deep balls where the receiver jumps into the defender.

turns out, the refs called offensive pass interference (for an illegal pick) instead, so now i'm logged in and i have nothing to complain about. you hate to see it.

   254. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 08:03 PM (#6096661)
USF obviously got the memo that the Gators' defense can be run against ... a dismaying combination of tons of yards before contact but also lots of yards after contact.

I mean, what the hell is going on here.

I have to question the wisdom of Sports Clips running ads that emphasize the apparently sexual nature of their haircutting experience.
   258. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 08:21 PM (#6096668)
Any time that one of the Gator defenders wants to shed a block, that would be just fine.

I saw this on the ticker and thought it said "Missouri" instead of Missouri State ... and that was bad enough!

Appreciate USF deciding to turn to their crappy passing game in a goal-to-go situation despite the Gators being comically inept at stopping the run.

"Unnecessary roughness, number 15 on the receiving team."

"Correction, the foul is on number 15 of the kicking team."

"Correction, number 15 on the receiving team is correct."

Good work, officiating team.

   263. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 08:40 PM (#6096675)
The Gators have a whole bunch of RBs and they're all pretty good, why are we wasting time on these WR screens to guys who don't actually run the ball very well.
   264. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 17, 2022 at 08:41 PM (#6096676)
In the red zone and trailing 37-30 in the last 80 seconds, Liberty throws a desperate heave to the end zone on 4th-and-4, the Wake corner is positioned to intercept and has it in his hands, but the receiver pokes it loose, and it bounces into the hands of a trailing receiver. Then Freeze goes for a Liberdelphia Special and the lead, but Wake covers the quarterback and the reverse gets strung out and pushed out of bounds short. Onside kick fails, and Wake kneels it out.
   265. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 08:45 PM (#6096677)
Appreciate the assists from the refs on that TD drive.

The fact that Xzavier Henderson is apparently the jet sweep/pop pass/screen guy is...a rather damning indictment of the state of the Florida receiver corps. My kingdom for Kadarius Toney.

Also, Bryce Young is genuinely pretty good in these Fansville commercials.

Famous last words probably, but the Gators secondary actually seems kind of amazing, considering that the line has gotten next to no pressure all season so far.
   269. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: September 17, 2022 at 09:07 PM (#6096681)
The corners definitely seem like the strength of the unit. They haven't really been challenged all that much in the first three games, but it does feel like a talented group.
   270. Howie Menckel Posted: September 17, 2022 at 09:10 PM (#6096683)
the color guy in this auburn/penn state sounds like he's either drunk or senile.

nothing wrong with either!

so I got one of those "free bets*" just before the season started, and it's for 5 bucks with no "catch."

I have been advised that when it's someone else's money, think BIG.

so I noticed Penn State at 100 to 1 to win the national title, and reasoned, "well, if they win every game, then I win $500."

they won't. but until then, the champagne remains on ice.
:)

* - one of the big "Free Bets" in some states is, for example, up to $1,000 or more. if you win, you make $900 or so, depending on the exact "vig."

if you lose, no problem: you get a second $1,000 bet and if that wins, you get most of your money back.

and if the second one also loses? um, I hope you thought this through beforehand.....

Washington murdering Sparty. Penix looking like a purple god.

Five first-half possessions -- four touchdowns and a 14-play drive that ended in a turnover on downs.

UTSA up 17-7 on Texas, lending credence to the widely held notion that Sarkisian will end up on the Dan Mullen career track - unexpectedly play Alabama close at home, give the fan base all kinds of warm fuzzies, and then get fired a couple months later.

I do appreciate Jordan Rodgers quickly acknowledging that the issue with that interception was Richardson's decision-making and not so much his footwork.
   274. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 09:40 PM (#6096693)
So ... I'm not saying I'm bailing yet. But, well, at what point do we wonder if Anthony Richardson can actually play QB at a consistently high (or even acceptable) level?

Props again to the official for helping out, this time slowing down the USF running game than the Gators have been able to all night. Fat lot of good it ended up doing, though.

Missouri State handled Arkansas for three quarters, and then...

- 73-yard Arkansas touchdown pass
- Three-and-out
- Arkansas returns the punt for a touchdown
- 38-yard completion to the Arkansas 37; false start and sack lead to immediate punt
- 80-yard Arkansas touchdown drive

Turning a 10-point lead into an 11-point loss in the blink of an eye.
   281. Brian C Posted: September 17, 2022 at 10:52 PM (#6096714)
Why did the Gators take a timeout after that bad snap?

ETA: I guess because it was 3rd down and he wanted the Gators to have time left if the FG was good. Actually a good move.

Yeah, given how awful the hold was, that was a pretty good attempt!

I look forward to seeing what bizarre miracle bails us out against Tennessee next week.

In other news, looks like I'm going to have to talk to my kid about an undefeated Kansas.

I say we all embrace it. Not like there's a bunch of other teams in the XII to root for, especially since Stoops left OU.

So.. South Florida decided to run it up the middle on third and 20 and try a 50ish yard field goal. I guess there's no reason to try and get closer 'cause college kickers are pretty automatic from that range. /argh

In other Sunshine State news, FSU QB Jordan Travis tweeted 'great news...let's go get it,' so hopefully his injury isn't as bad as originally feared. Nothing official from FSU yet, though.

How dare you impugn college kickers like that?

College holders, on the other hand, are notoriously unreliable.

Yeah, this one was on the holder. The kicker (Spencer Shrader) made a heckuva try, I still can't believe he got it that far.

And to be fair, Shrader did make a 49-yarder earlier. OTOH, his career long is 52 yards. With Florida undoubtedly playing off the receivers a bit, might have made some sense to try and pick up, say, 10 yards or so. Or just fling it deep and hope. It's not like the 2 yards they gained up the middle did anything.

Eh. Couple of plays on soft coverage notwithstanding, there was a pretty clear pattern for USF tonight: good things happened when they ran the ball and bad things happened when they passed the ball. Running up the middle maybe wasn't the most dynamic or creative call in that situation, but I can understand it -- they were gashing the Gators all night on the ground.

Really, it was just a crummy position to be in and the bad snap left them with no good options.
   295. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 18, 2022 at 12:22 AM (#6096738)
Miami has handily outgained A&M and trails 17-9 because A) it can't do anything in the red zone, B) can't consistently make field goals after drives stall and C) its muffed punt was recovered by A&M and A&M's muffed punt was recovered by A&M.

One last chance to finish a drive in the final 75 seconds.

Kinnick Stadium really is Masochism Field. Nevada at Iowa about to resume here at midnight CT. Mid 3rd quarter.

LOL. After one play, Nevada lines up for a 57 yard FGA, and they call another delay.... I remember Tulsa v oSu ran on and on until the wee hours of the night awhile back.
