OT - August/September 2023 College Football thread

The rest of the “Four Corners” schools are heading to the Big 12. Arizona, Arizona State and Utah will all join Colorado in the Big 12 starting ahead of the 2024-25 athletic season, the conference announced Friday night. In adding three more Pac-12 teams, the Big 12 in 2024 will swell to 16 programs, the largest membership in league history.

Colorado was the first to jettison the Pac-12 for the Big 12 last week ahead of the Pac-12 finally unveiling a proposed media rights deal that was not received positively. Big 12 presidents unanimously voted to welcome Arizona into the league Thursday and did the same in a Friday meeting for Arizona State and Utah, sources told CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. The schools’ respective Boards of Regents formalized their transitions into the Big 12 on Friday night.

And not to be outdone:

Oregon and Washington have joined the Big Ten, the universities and conference announced Friday night. The programs become the third and fourth Pac-12 members to leave the conference for the Big Ten in the last 13 months.

...

The programs, both charter members of the Pac-12 dating back to 1915, informed Pac-12 presidents earlier Friday that they planned to accept invitations from the Big Ten. The Big Ten made those formal offers later Friday with both Oregon and Washington officially approving the measures.

Notre Dame, leading 14-10 in the final minute, gives up an eight-yard completion on 4th-and-7, drops an interception, and gives up a 20-yard pass to the one on 3rd-and-18, then Ohio State runs it in with a second left for the win.

A fitting end to the "Always The Most Overrated" Bowl !

Notre Dame had 10 men on the last *TWO* plays of the game, coming out of a timeout

Northwestern has somehow managed to erase a 31-10 fourth-quarter deficit to push the Gophers into OT, and then, after a Gopher FG in the first OT, scores a TD on the first play to win the game. That's like a whole year's worth of Northwestern offense all at once.

Washington might be really good.

It's time for Utah to throw Johnson overboard. There cannot be a worse option.

I don't see the sense in turning to the quarterback you're willing to let throw the ball only after falling behind 14-0.

Utah promptly moved down the field, aided largely by penalties -- though you can only benefit from pass interference one way -- before a bad snap made it 3rd-and-goal from the 23 and Barnes threw a pick. Oregon State subsequently scored on a 4th-and-1 pitch when Utah lined up to stop a sneak, and that was that.

Rising cannot get back soon enough.

I do not have confidence in Graham Mertz bringing the Gators back from a 16-0 deficit.

Relatedly and perhaps paradoxically, I feel like someone needs to let Napier know that the Gators aren't actually all that great at running the ball.
   110. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 30, 2023 at 01:09 PM (#6142853)
But at 23-0, Mertz is the guy.
   111. Brian C Posted: September 30, 2023 at 01:22 PM (#6142854)
I want to like Napier - I really do. He makes sense when he talks, and he seems like the first coach the Gators have had since Spurrier who wasn't a complete psychopathic headcase. I want to have faith in the process and rebuilding the program from the foundation up and everything else he's been selling.

But man, so many games in 1.5 years that they've shown up and not just been ready to play. UK last year, UGA last year, Vandy last year, the Oregon State bowl game, Utah this year, and now UK again this year. It's really making it hard. I can be patient with the lack of talent - we all knew Mullen left the cupboard bare. But I have to be honest, I feel like we were promised a big improvement this year in discipline and tenacity, and that's not what we're seeing. And it's looking more and more like Napier is just overwhelmed than it does a slow but steady improvement.

UK ironically taking their foot off the gas with a 23-0 lead by trying to throw the ball.
   113. Brian C Posted: September 30, 2023 at 01:40 PM (#6142858)
Northwestern 10-10 with Penn State at halftime, which I like. The B1G is just more fun when you have no idea what Northwestern is going to do from one week to the next.
   114. Brian C Posted: September 30, 2023 at 01:51 PM (#6142861)
Ray Davis has 12 runs in the first half for UK, 7 of which were for 10 yards or more, with an 8th being a TD. Overall, UK has 18 rushes for 223 yards.

Yet, they've decided to let Leary throw 12 times for only 36 yards - he's looked terrible with almost every throw, and even threw an easy pick-6 that the Gators defender just dropped. Not a stretch to say that their insistence on staying with the passing game is the only thing keeping Florida with even the 8% chance of winning that ESPN's tracker still gives them. The Gators should probably be down by 30 right now, honestly.

Southern California could still lose this game the defense was as bad as it was last year Caleb just under threw a wide open receiver by 10 yards
   116. stanmvp48 Posted: September 30, 2023 at 03:32 PM (#6142869)
And they just missed a short field goal

If you're Auburn and you know you're going for it on fourth down, I think the play there was a surprise throw on third down.

Auburn pushing Georgia to the brink...

Gary Danielson positing that Auburn tying the game, as opposed to going for fourth down in pursuit of the lead, puts pressure on Georgia. Nods to the possibility of a college kicker missing from 40 yards as an afterthought.

Stanford outgaining Oregon 102-6, but it's only yielded two field goals.

LSU’s defense ends their playoff aspirations. Giving up 55 points is just not acceptable. It looks like Brian Kelly’s second year is going to be a step backwards.

Don't look now, but after being dead in the water in the first half, Duke has taken a 14-13 lead against Notre Dame with nine minutes left.
   124. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 30, 2023 at 10:45 PM (#6142916)
Duke should be going for this.
   125. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 30, 2023 at 11:11 PM (#6142919)
Notre Dame's right tackle got away with the most blatant hold you'll ever see on the completion before the offensive pass interference. Combined, those would've basically ended the game.

But Duke only has itself to blame for missing a free shot at Hartman in the end zone at the start of the drive and rushing three on 4th-and-16 after forcing panicked heaves with blitzes the two previous plays.

And, y'know, for willingly giving up possession of the ball in the first place for the sake of 25 yards of field position.
