OT - Catch-All Pop Culture Extravaganza (July 2020)

With Hollywood production being sideswiped by the coronavirus pandemic, it was a wild spring for the TV world. And there’s still not much clarity as we swing into the summer season. But the shows must go on — most of them, anyway — so here is our annual list of summer premiere dates for new series and new seasons of returning shows. It covers more than 150 broadcast, cable and streaming series bowing through August 31 in various dayparts but does not include specials or movies.

In the world of ghost-runners-and-universal-DH baseball, television's place as the true national pastime has never been more clear.

Ennio Morricone has died.

The final standoff scene of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is my favorite movie music moment of all time.

Saw the movie when it came out only because Fonda was in it. Surprisingly, it was entertaining. Morricone provided a good score.

The other day my wife and I decided to check out Warrior Nun on Netflix, simply because of the name. And yeah, once again a teenage girl will have to save the world, but 3 episodes in it's silly, if forgettable, fun.

A few weeks ago, the video for Assassin by Fearless Flyers started showing up in my news feed being shared by a bunch of musician friends. That was my gateway to Vulfpeck and the cult of Joe Dart. Now I'm incredibly disappointed in my musician friends for not setting me hip to Vulf any sooner than this.

I am enjoying the new Dream Wife album. They were probably my favourite live band in 2018.

Last fall or winter I picked up a copy of The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway in our building's laundry room/book exchange (people leave books and household bric-a-brac they no longer want for others to appropriate). Finally got around to reading it...and reading it again. Wonderful book. Then I find that "Harkaway" is just a pen name, his real last name is Cornwell and his father, David, is a fairly well-known writer.

If you have a taste for comic, post-apocolyptic sci-fi romances written in gorgeously ornate prose, I highly recommend Cornwell fils.

Thanks for the recommendation, H&U, I've added it to my library hold list. I'm 6th in line, and the Toronto system has 2 copies, so I figure it'll get to me around the time autumn arrives.

I finished season one of "Fleabag". What am I missing? It was fine, but nothing earth-shattering.

mathesond, hope you like it. I've also read his 2nd & 3rd novels, Angelmaker and Tigerman and would recommend them as well. Just picked up his 4th novel, Gnomon from the library today.

Votto, I liked Season 1 of Fleabag, and really liked season 2. But, that was a year or so ago, so who knows how my tastes have changed?

I think Season 2 received significant acclaim, and I do plan to watch it. The 20-25 minute episodes are nice.

Despite being stuck at home, I'm behind pace for my goal of reading 50 books this year.

I'm reading my 65th. Have watched very few movies, not surprisingly.
