OT - Catch-All Pop Culture Extravaganza (March 2021)

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the Texas-based theater chain that has become a favorite with cinephiles for its dine-in service and fan-forward approach to exhibition, has filed for Chapter 11. The bankruptcy filing comes as part of an asset purchase agreement with Altamont Capital Partners, a previous investor in the company, as well as affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, a new backer. The company says that operations will continue as normal and the Chapter 11 process and sale will give it the capital it needs to continue operating as it emerges from a public health crisis that left many of its locations closed for months. The agreement involves “the sale of substantially all its assets.”

Does the shortest month even deserve its own thread?

Really, the thing that undercuts my motivation to post these is my dread of having to dig up a story related to movies or music the nine months a year I can't just pick the Deadline.com list of upcoming TV premieres.

I know I'm very late to the show, but I cannot recommend enough the video game "Hades" to those that have not picked it up yet.

It is a fantastic rogue-like game that is an absolute treat because of the story telling and voice acting.
In most games, I usually hammer the "next" button to get through dialogue or voice acting moments, but in this one I am delighted to hear new dialogue every single time.
The game play is perfect for a game controller (it's available on Windows/macOS/Nintendo Switch), and is both extremely challenging and rewarding.
With all the different upgrades/boons/skills that you can upgrade, plus the various "currencies" that are used to upgrade weapons/areas and even your own home base, the possibilities are almost endless for each run.

I finished the main storyline, then the epilogue storyline, then all the different side quest storylines, and I'm STILL playing the game. There are challenge modes to ramp up the difficulty for those that want it, and there is also a "I just want to advance the storyline" mode where your character can still die, but comes back each time stronger than before, allowing you to move on with the story. There is an initial difficulty curve that might prove frustrating (as it took me more than 15 tries to get past the first area boss, and 36 tries to beat the game once...which isn't close to the end of the main storyline), but it rewards attempts by giving you the chance to upgrade yourself.

Going back to the strongest suit, it's the story/voice acting. Even after 150 hours of game play, I was still coming across new dialogue from the various "gods" in the game. All of the NPCs have interesting characters, and they interact with each other as well in many cases. Even the narrator voice (usually heard at the end of the game) has dozens and dozens of different (and funny/interesting) lines.

I have no problem saying that this is a game that sits in my list of all-time favourites (with ones like Diablo II, Spelunky, Team Fortress 2, Slay the Spire, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal/Portal 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Monster Train).
