Down 20-6, feel free to grow a pair and go for 4th-and-1.

One play and 84 yards later, 27-6. Fully deserved.

First-quarter Memphis is suddenly back.
   103. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 28, 2019 at 02:32 PM (#5911416)
Meanwhile, Purdy had two chances to hit a man streaking through the secondary uncovered for a touchdown to get ISU back in the game and failed both times. First time, he didn't even see it and ran for a short gain. Second time, he threw the ball behind his man on the sideline, forcing him out one step after the catch. So ISU settles for a field goal to keep it a three-score game and basically accomplish nothing.

Memphis getting consistently gashed but stood tall on the one that mattered.

Just as they were talking up what a game White was having, too.

He kinda Kyle Orton-ed, though, moving the ball between the 20s and then settling for field goals. In addition to the backbreaking turnovers.

penn state's RT had a pretty awful game. he got beat off the snap a bunch of times, and then on that 4th down, he blocked air instead of chipping the guy who wound up making the tackle.
"Holy...cow" is right.
micah parsons is really good. a lot of people are lucky that he chose to go to penn state instead of tosu.

About as bad a start as you could imagine for The Team That Doesn't Belong.

I suppose Georgia would be a bit better, but do you really want an immediate re-match?
   111. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 28, 2019 at 04:38 PM (#5911432)
Honestly, Alabama with Jones is probably the fourth-best team.

If you have LSU's offense, you should probably be going for it on every single fourth and two.

No way that isn't pass interference.

Put that on the short list of worst calls ever made.
   115. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:00 PM (#5911438)
Horrible, outrageous no call on that 3rd and 10. OU may not have a chance but a game of this magnitude deserves better officiating.
   116. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:02 PM (#5911439)
Wow. That Burrow throw and that unreal catch on 3rd and 2. Wow.
   117. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:15 PM (#5911441)
Basically all of Oklahoma's positive plays, apart from the contested deep ball, have been quarterback runs or involved the threat of a quarterback run. Consistent success in the passing game is not going to be a thing, so this is what the game plan should revolve around.
   118. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:21 PM (#5911443)
I don't know if that hit was targeting (who even knows what that is at this point?), but it was certainly unnecessary and dickish. "Unnecessary and dickish" isn't a penalty, granted, but still.
   119. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:22 PM (#5911444)
Enjoy the rest of the game from the locker room, guy.

I was thinking this game could be 35-7 at the half. I might have misunderestimated.
   122. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 28, 2019 at 05:32 PM (#5911449)
That ball wasn't picked off because the play was slow to develop, it was picked off because Hurts floated it instead of firing it in when the window was open.

You know, I haven't had the opportunity to ever say this during the playoff era, so I'm just going to throw caution to the wind and say it now: Florida would be more competitive in this game than Oklahoma.

When LSU scores again before the half, I want a two-point try just so we can say we saw a team get half-a-hundred hung on 'em.

I've seen running backs juke defenders into oblivion, but I don't think I've seen anyone do it with so much distance between him and the defender.

Does "targeting" automatically result in the player being ejected? Ejection seems harsh for that hit by the Ohio State DB.
   140. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: December 28, 2019 at 09:45 PM (#5911500)
Yeah, targeting=ejection. And that is one hugely consequential targeting penalty.

I knew Lawrence could run but had no idea he was that fast.

Yeah, targeting=ejection.

If that's the rule and there's no flexibility to it, I guess defenders should know they can't go high at all knowing it's normal for the ball carrier to duck. There's been one in each game now, the Ohio State one didn't seem to be a cheap shot at all.

On that targeting play it sure looked like Lawrence ducked as he leaned forward. How much can a defender alter their momentum on the fly like that?

The NCAA occasionally talks about targeting as a penalty that's designed to protect defenders, and I think that play's a fair example of that. I don't think Wade had bad intentions there, and ejection for that is awfully harsh, but he did unnecessarily lead with his helmet.
   147. Howie Menckel Posted: December 28, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5911509)
ejection is a stupid response to that play.

I'm fine with a 15-yard penalty - but given the QB's head-ducking, I respect an opposing view on that.

return to the stupid rule referenced in Sentence 1.
   148. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: December 28, 2019 at 10:44 PM (#5911510)
Funny thing about that roughing the punter penalty is that I'm pretty sure the Ohio State player took the worst of the contact.

   157. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: December 28, 2019 at 11:07 PM (#5911519)
I don't know if that was "actually" a catch, but considering it was called one on the field, I have no idea how you can say the replay was 100 percent, totally, undeniably, indisputably clear.
   158. Misirlou gave her his Vincent to ride Posted: December 28, 2019 at 11:07 PM (#5911520)

if this gets us the Clemson coach on the podium after losing by 40 to LSU still complaining about how his team and conference gets no respect, then it will all have been worth it.

that said, OSU is the better squad by a lot. the zebras loved Clemson, but OSU stupid penalties and bad coaching (pro tip: don't kick 3 FG in the red zone in the first half) were the difference.

On the targeting call, lowering your head and leading with the crown of the helmet is verboten no matter where the hit lands -- see the final play of Joey Bosa's collegiate career -- so Lawrence ducking wasn't a factor. CFBF is right that this part of the rule, which should be a separate rule with a separate name that doesn't connote that where the hit is directed matters, is meant to keep defenders from breaking their necks.

I was driving last night when Clemson fumbled the ball away and tOSU returned it for a touchdown, so I only heard the call on the radio and didn't see the play until today. Boy howdy, what a terrible call. It wasn't even close - if it had been ruled an incompletion on the field, it should have been overturned to a fumble. There really should be some kind of investigation of that.

That play happened with 31 seconds left in a 20-20 game. WMU passed on a long field goal on the subsequent fourth down and threw an incomplete pass. Western Kentucky then got to the WMU 39 with three seconds left, ran the field goal team on and off, then threw an unsuccessful Hail Mary. WMU was called for 12 men on the field, setting up an untimed down, and WKU's kicker blasted one down the middle for the win.

Clanga had touchdown drives of 99 and 80 in its first four possessions. Apart from that, it has gone three-and-out; three-and-out; fumbled kickoff; three-and-out; 12-yard gain on the first play of a drive, followed by a fumble returned for a touchdown three plays later on 3rd-and-22; three-and-out.

Anyway, Virginia's jump-ball touchdown was the epitome of Bryce Perkins riding the razor's edge between brilliant and boneheaded. A+ for the escape, and then he threw to the wrong man! The guy coming on the cross was wide open, and instead he picked the guy who was blanketed. So many Virginia games hinge on whether he makes the four or five wow plays without the two killer turnovers.

The only thing I could think was that I couldn't tell if his butt was on the ground before his shoulder. ESPN only seemed to have one angle to show us, and in that angle you really couldn't see any part of his body except his shoulder.
