*waves middle finger at whatever poseur put the Miami-Nebraska game on YouTube and titled it "1994 Orange Bowl"*

*also at everyone whose actions contributed to that being the top search result for "1994 Orange Bowl"*

My sympathy, I was at that OB, and immediately thought of Byron Bennett kick in that game. That game was unreal. Replay would have solved that game with Floyd's fumble earlier. The phantom clip on Dixons punt return too, ugh.
   103. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 01:39 PM (#6111588)
Tulane punting on 4th-and-2 near midfield, having given up a long touchdown drive on USC's first possession. Not great.
   104. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 01:55 PM (#6111591)
And how'd that punt work out? 95-yard touchdown drive that was only ever in doubt because Williams overthrew three would-be scores.
   105. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 02:24 PM (#6111598)
Tulane runs right through USC's defense on its second possession to get within 14-7, Williams throws a terrible interception while driving on USC's third, and Tulane strikes from 87 yards to tie the game.

So the game going according to the forecast: Tulane's defense is overmatched and isn't going to force punts, but it might get stops with one-off USC mistakes. And Tulane's offense has a shot to make it a shootout against USC's inept defense.

But no more punts on short fourth downs!
   106. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 02:43 PM (#6111600)
Drops for Tulane on first and third down, leading to a 4th-and-3 punt, and USC scores to go up 28-14 before the half.

Don't ####### punt.
   107. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 03:19 PM (#6111604)
Start of the fourth quarter, Mississippi State faced 4th-and-2 from the eight, and a throw to the back of the end zone was caught and called a touchdown. Dude's foot was on the line, but it can't be overturned because who can really be sure where a white shoe ends and the white paint begins?

So it's 10-10 instead 10-3 Illinois, and Mississippi State is driving for a game-winning field goal.
   108. stanmvp48 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 03:26 PM (#6111607)
And Caleb leads a wide open receiver out of bounds then they miss a long field goal
   109. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 03:26 PM (#6111608)
And after the field goal, Illinois tries to Stanford Band it and gets one of the laterals picked off and returned for a touchdown.
   110. stanmvp48 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 03:48 PM (#6111609)
500 yards offense
   111. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 03:55 PM (#6111610)
They should onside kick after every score, whether USC is surprised by it or not.

I mean, they're not getting stops when the Trojans have 95+ yards to go, so not much is lost.
   112. stanmvp48 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:05 PM (#6111611)
Over 900 yards combined
   113. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:20 PM (#6111613)
A safety blitzing from 15 yards out is hardly different than playing with 10 on defense.
   114. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:32 PM (#6111618)
Let's just hope this doesn't go to overtime as it may never end if it does.
   115. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:36 PM (#6111621)
USC fumbles the kickoff out of bounds at the one and gives up a safety, and Tulane is suddenly in a position to milk the clock and score late to win 46-45.
   116. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:38 PM (#6111622)
Milk the clock? Seems not so likely but I guess you never know.
   117. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:40 PM (#6111623)
Well. If Tulane manages to use the whole clock, which could happen now, it will be their most time consuming drive of the day.
   118. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:45 PM (#6111624)
The 35 seconds they took before the first fourth down and the wasted timeout now loom large.
   119. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:45 PM (#6111625)
They might get targeting moving this to the three.
   120. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:50 PM (#6111626)
TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!
   121. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:57 PM (#6111627)
Five linemen actively detract from an offense's efforts to Stanford Band down the field. Still waiting for some coach with the good sense to put out five athletic defenders whose numbers are 50-79 for that play.
   122. Mike A Posted: January 02, 2023 at 04:58 PM (#6111629)
Crazy, crazy ending. Can't believe Tulane pulled it off.

USC was at 99.8% to win with 4:30 left.
   123. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 05:02 PM (#6111630)
With the three programs that have produced all the G5's best New Year's Six entries jumping to the Big 12, somebody has to step up to that level to avoid a future of high-profile trash games, and Tulane's proximity to talent makes it as good a prospect as any, I guess. And playing in the Cotton Bowl this year probably gives it a boost in that regard.

Couldn't have gone better from this perspective.
   124. stanmvp48 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 05:03 PM (#6111631)
No the offense does not need offensive linemen on the lateral play
   125. stanmvp48 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 05:06 PM (#6111633)
Also thought Caleb should have run or thrown when they were backed up
   126. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 05:12 PM (#6111634)
I think the rose design would've looked better on Utah's white helmets. It's hard to see on the red.
   127. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 02, 2023 at 05:31 PM (#6111635)
Stands look about 70% red.
   128. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 06:35 PM (#6111641)
Stands look about 70% red.

for utah, it's one of the biggest bowl games they've ever been in.

for penn state, they're playing utah. in a season where they finished behind two other teams in the B1G legends/leaders east/west standings.
   129. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 07:38 PM (#6111642)
utah's punter just gramatica'd himself trying to draw a roughing penalty.
   130. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 07:44 PM (#6111643)
and penn state's WR just pulled a barbaro at the glue, err, i mean goal line.
   131. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 08:02 PM (#6111644)
this guy #16 is shellshocked.
   132. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 02, 2023 at 09:57 PM (#6111647)
ugh.

   133. John DiFool2 Posted: January 03, 2023 at 11:46 AM (#6111670)
Huh. You guys have college football, soccer, and NBA threads, all active today, but an NFL player almost dies on the field, and there's zero discussion anywhere? There was a thread from October, but it got locked for some unknown reason.

I didn't catch the live feed, but watched the replay this morning. Godspeed to Damar.

Oh, NFL discussion has been exiled to the Lounge, you say.
   134. /muteself 57i66135 Posted: January 06, 2023 at 12:31 PM (#6112157)
Buffalo Bills @BuffaloBills
Per the physicians at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight. He continues to progress remarkably in his recovery.

His neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team.
Buffalo Bills @BuffaloBills
Damar Hamlin FaceTimed into our team meeting today to talk to players and coaches.

What he said to the team: “Love you boys.”
YOOOOOOOO!!!!!
   135. Meatwad Posted: January 06, 2023 at 09:31 PM (#6112264)
John, I was watching live and was shocked this didnt pop up. Now the NFL generally makes the wrong choice and bad decisions on the regular but the plan and training for the on field medical teams that dont deal with concussions did what might be the best job possible. So happy that he is awake and talking.
   136. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 09, 2023 at 07:44 PM (#6112610)
TCU, for the love of Christ, keep the magic going for one more game.

I repeat.
   137. Brian White Posted: January 09, 2023 at 08:10 PM (#6112614)
We finally got a year where both semifinal games were absolutely fantastic games, and the championship game is gonna end up 51-3. Ah well. Fun season, everyone.
   138. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 09, 2023 at 08:33 PM (#6112616)
Ugh. Don't punt in Georgia territory.
   139. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 09, 2023 at 08:39 PM (#6112617)
"Stetson Bennett may not get the credit he deserves..."

*head explodes*
   140. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 09, 2023 at 08:40 PM (#6112619)
Bowers didn't "make a good block," he held pretty blatantly.

Bowers didn't "make a good block," he held pretty blatantly.

The outcome of the game was probably not changed by this call.

I would like to apologize to everyone for underestimating the severity of this beatdown in #137.
   143. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: January 10, 2023 at 10:31 AM (#6112654)
Feels like this UGA edition should be ranked as one of the top teams of the century, no? A couple of weird blips early in the season, but they pretty much blew out every ranked team they played except for OSU.
   144. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: January 10, 2023 at 11:44 AM (#6112661)
*double post*

The early 00s Hurricanes and Trojans are probably the standard. Joe Burrow's LSU team came to mind, but they didn't crush teams the way UGA did. Alabama's teams are all indistinguishable to me, although I'm sure some of them are in the conversation.
