OT - March 2017 NBA thread

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, none of bothered to submit a monthly thread to avoid detracting from what this site is really about:  I dunno, baseball, maybe?  Probably politics, but maybe some baseball, too.

Completely agree, NJ. David Griffin's also out there, but I don't think I want him. Dolan deserves some praise for making the pull: Phil's been a disaster, driven entirely by his ego and absurd need to vindicate his coaching by advancing the "Triangle." I feel good for Hornacek, even.

but have constructed a shrine from Sixers press clippings and am praying for Hinkie.

I set the over/under at 12 for the number of second round picks that Hinkie could get for Melo.

Lowe: "As Steiny indicates, HOU calling teams w room seeking to dump Ryno--and giving impression they are confident re signing CP if they get space."

I can be wrong, but I don't get it. Doesn't CP like to play slow? Both Harden and CP are also best with the ball in their hands. That's not to say it won't work - in fact, I think having both of them together would work best in a D'Antoni system - but why would CP see that as a better fit than SA or trying to force his way onto Cleveland?

I wanted to be the first Knicks fan to throw my support behind Hinkie, but it looks like I'm the third.

3. So if our theoretical rookie pg is going to be bad on defense and turnover prone, they need to have truly elite skills to make up for the rest of it. That means they'd need to basically be an all-world creator, distributor and shooter.
so...lonzo ball.

goddamnit.

careful what you wish for. if hinkie doesn't think porzingis is a stud, he'll be dumped for draft picks within 6 weeks.

hinkie is ruthless and he will destroy the things you care about if it nets so much as a 2% increase in likelihood of future championships.

So does Isiah's name get floated around again this time? Dolan could think that enough time has passed that people will have forgotten.

I've kept flipping through that 2015 trade thread off and on today, and all of a sudden Rose's meniscus burst and I starting having PTSD. In retrospect, the Bulls should have jumped all over this stiggles trade idea that people shot down then (of course, it still would have been bad for Minnesota):

who says no?

CHI gets rubio, bennett and gallinari
DEN gets rose, mirotic and snell
MIN gets lawson

I can't post a positive stiggles thing without cancelling it out though:
if it's possible on draft day, i trade noel for karl anthony towns straight up. i love noel, but he's more raw on offense than i expected and i don't know that he'll be able to develop that part of his game if he's playing next to embiid. towns would be a big step down on defense, but on the whole, i think him and embiid should be damn good when they develop.

rr, look away: Okafor seems to me to be sort of "bust-proof" barring a case of Bynumknees or YaoFeet.

Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. Good ####### riddance. I've seen no rumors about potential replacements, but have constructed a shrine from Sixers press clippings and am praying for Hinkie.

No interest whatsoever in Hinkie. With the KP trade rumors, the hissy fit over the exit meeting, and finally the absurd talk of buying out Melo, Jackson finally went full-in Colonel Kurtz and Dolan went up the river to the heart of darkness and whacked him.

There's no need to replace him with another GM whose methods have also become ... unsound.

In strictly roster terms, I actually give him a B. All the other BS -- including the absurd Triangle obsession -- was obviously intolerable.

He's a really bizarre guy and it's really bizarre that he thought he could win a power struggle against virtually every constituency in the Association with the GM record he was bringing to the table.

Whatever. Hoiberg is clearly and obviously the next Steve Kerr.

Mellow Mouse, Benevolent Space Tyrant Posted: March 03, 2015 at 03:28 PM (#4906773)

Which is why I am excited that the Mayor will be coming to MN next year ;)

Moses Taylor, Unwavering Optimist Posted: March 03, 2015 at 03:32 PM (#4906778)

I thought you were taking Thibs from us?

Mellow Mouse, Benevolent Space Tyrant Posted: March 03, 2015 at 03:42 PM (#4906791)

That was more Berg than I. I think Thibs is a very good coach, but I have concerns and am not sure he wants to come up North. The Mayor has ties to the organization and MN loves its coming home story lines, so I think it is slightly more likely we get The Mayor than we get the Task Master Thibs.

aberg Posted: March 03, 2015 at 03:59 PM (#4906812)

Yup, that was my wish-casting. He got his NBA start in Minnesota, but there is probably no realistic reason to think he might end up there.

I'd trade being right about part of that for being wrong about the other part. You guy win this round (plus Butler!)...
   7414. . Posted: June 28, 2017 at 09:20 AM (#5484235)
Dolan wants Ujiri?

Yes. He's actually wanted him since he fleeced the Knicks in the Bargnani trade. He also knows him from the Anthony trade negotiations.

Of course, he'll probably pay TO something like two unprotected 1s for him, thus defeating the entire purpose.

I'm giving it less than 6 hours that Isola begins tweeting about Isiah's return to MSG as team president.
Oh dear god, please let this happen.

That's fine, so long as it's for sound basketball reasons rather than for blowing off an exit meeting.
   7418. jmurph Posted: June 28, 2017 at 09:58 AM (#5484274)
With the obvious caveat that Dolan may just respond to being "hands off" for the past three years by going crazy, I'm not sure the Knicks job is particularly undesirable at the moment. They don't owe any more firsts and they have 3 young pieces to build around. Obviously the Noah deal is a disaster, and the Carmelo situation is not ideal, but it could be worse.

Pretty much every big picture wish I've had for the Wolves over the last 3-4 years - Towns, fire Mitchell, Thibs, Butler- has eventually come true. It's weird. Now let's see if that helps win a few games.

Do you take requests? A trophy might be a bit much to ask, but how about some 3-point shooting? And maybe to have Wiggins and Towns discover defense.

The wolves say yes. Very very quickly. And get it recorded, signed (preferably in blood) and done ASAP.

Note: I like KP that much and am of the school that the winner is the team that gets the best player.

Great quiz, I whiffed on the John Tesh question, guessed correctly on #9, and missed #7. I thought it was Matt Maloney.

Any organization who hires Isiah Thomas for any role more complicated than "Guy responsible for ordering lunch" deserves to be contracted.

And even that is only acceptable if you don't mind the lunch missing the playoffs.

I'm pretty confident no one will hire Phil to run a team again. But special adviser or something, sure. I think Hinkie will start that way, too- consultant, advisor, do that for 1-2 years then get a GM job again somewhere with hedge fund/silicon valley guys running the show, like Milwaukee.
