OT - NBA Thread 2020

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and hopefully none of the other ones posted a duplicate thread to this.

I think you're misreading the box score. 29 3s (still a lot).

Where does 5-6 on twos, 8-9 on threes, 3-4 from the line for 37 points rank on the list of all-time S. Curry offensive games?

The 76ers played a basketball game on Thursday, and they won it, and nobody lost a limb, or spontaneously combusted, or committed securities fraud, or inadvertently uttered an incantation that opened a door to the Hellmouth under the center-court logo at Wells Fargo Center.

Sometimes, you need to celebrate the small stuff.
...
a theoretical redistribution of touches to Harris and Horford at higher usage in their optimal positions, more time off the ball for Josh Richardson [...] could help Philly at least tread water for a spell.

That’s not overwhelmingly likely

Arnovitz on Milwaukee

The Bucks' 12.8 point differential per 100 possessions ranks them as the most lethal team in NBA history.

Only three teams have ever posted better records through 59 games than the Bucks, now 51-8 after Friday's win.

Milwaukee's league-leading defense -- 101.3 points surrendered per 100 possessions -- is more than three points better than second-ranked Toronto. To put this into perspective, that's more daylight than there is between the No. 2 Raptors and the No. 7 Pacers.

In an odd expression of NBA irony, the better the Bucks perform in the regular season, the more they prove their critics' point: The Bucks are a great regular-season team, not a great regular-season team.

"It's to be expected," Budenholzer told ESPN. "In our league -- to some degree, in our world -- until you've done something, people kind of doubt you."

Optics drive perception, and this doubt stems from some popular NBA notions. Middleton doesn't scream "second star," even if he posted true shooting percentages of 71.9 and 56.7, respectively, each of the past two postseasons. If the commentariat didn't doubt the yet-to-achieve Warriors in 2015, it's largely because their top performer was a shooter, a title Antetokounmpo can't yet claim. Ballet has a way of devolving into a tractor pull in the playoffs, and conventional wisdom states that stars need to be able to shoot off the dribble.

Posting this with 9 to go in the 4th so it’s still close, but this is a super disappointing offensive performance from Boston. I know they’re missing Kemba but they’ve let a pretty mediocre defense completely dictate how they’re playing on offense.

So have I got it right that Houston gives up Capela, Gerald Green and a first.
In return they get a second, Robert Covington, and Jordan Bell?

I don't get what Houston is doing here.
both covington and bell are good/great defenders, who are capable of playing the 5 in small ball lineups.

my guess is that HOU is going to run a ton of 1-2 pick and rolls, with harden using westbrook as a screener, and covington/tucker/gordon et al, spotting up on the perimeter. the change from using capela as the main screener to using westbrook is going to create a significantly more dynamic attack, that's going to mirror what GSW was able to do with curry/draymond, except instead of draymond, who's a very good ballhandler for his size, HOU is going to get the ball into westbrook's hands, going to the rim at speed, against a defense that's in rotation and trying to cover 4 threats with 3 defenders.

make no mistake, they're going to destroy people.

A. What tship said
B. This is particularly hilarious because the number one criticism of Westbrook was that he was taking too many terrible shots and is a (uniquely) shitty shooter. He has stopped doing that, and now he is better. That you interpret that as an L for his critics is pretty amusing.

F'ing tragedies of my recent NBA fandom:

* The Thunder squandering 3 eventual MVPs.
* JR Smith dribbling out the clock in the Finals, resulting in LeBron James nearly breaking his hand (I realize that's on LeBron, and still...) and denying us a likely epic NBA Finals performance (I mean, he went for 51 in that game, then couldn't shoot well the rest of the series)

As we all know, the tragedy was the jackass, cheapskate owner moving the team from a major market that could easily pay all three stars to a minor market where they paid the bills by rigging oil prices.

#1527 I remember thinking after OKC lost in the 2012 Finals (was it really that long ago?) that with that much talent, there were inevitable rings in their future. Turns out only Durant fulfilled that promise, and with a different team at that. Really a wasted opportunity for their franchise.

Re: JR Smith's bone headed play, will people still be talking about that several decades from now the same way baseball gaffes get referenced long after the actual event?

I don't think so, because even if the Cavs win that game, they were very, very, very unlikely to win that series. The 2017 was better than the 2018 Cavs, and they got blasted.

I felt the same way about the 1996 Magic, with 23 year old Shaq and 24 year old Penny. At least the Magic didn't break up that team of their own volition.

I get that this is snark, but I genuinely don't think that it's because of playing with Harden. Right now, Russ is filling the Draymond role in the GSW 2016 offense. The key for the Rockets, like it was with the Warriors, is playing Russ as the only big on offense. However, Russ is like a 6-2 Draymond who can finish at the rim (which Dray has always struggled with).

It was not obvious to me at all that would be successful. In particular, Russ is so good at making PnR reads, I thought that taking away the only screener would make Russ's play suffer. I did not anticipate that this would be so revelatory.
   1534. If on a winter's night a traveling violation Posted: March 02, 2020 at 05:31 PM (#5927635)
I’m not surprised the offense improved, particularly for Westbrook; the unsolvable equation the Rockets offense has presented over the last few years has been “violent rim attack + shooting everywhere around it + Harden and his passing/free throws”, and this lets Russ take over the role of Designated Rim Demolition Man. I was surprised the loss of Capela didn’t hurt the defense/rebounding enough to offset that improvement, which I think is a testament to the size, toughness, and buy-in of all the non-centers they run out.
   1535. SteveF Posted: March 02, 2020 at 08:35 PM (#5927653)
Houston's defensive rebound rate is 58% so far in this game against the Knicks. For context, the Knicks are the best offensive rebounding team in the NBA this year.

Re: JR Smith's bone headed play, will people still be talking about that several decades from now the same way baseball gaffes get referenced long after the actual event?

I doubt it. Like Russlan said, that series wasn't in doubt. OTOH, LeBron would have willed the Cavs to one or two wins, which would have been amazing to watch from a purely individual performance point of view.

from bill simmons' the ringer, a site which probably didn't hack steve wozniak's twitter account to implicate his wife in the triggering of a global pandemic, but maybe....:
First, the good news. The Knicks’ new president is Leon Rose, a longtime agent at CAA with a roster of big-name players. The idea behind hiring an agent like Rose is that he has a proven history of establishing relationships with the league’s stars, and can finally convince marquee players to sign with the Knicks. (Of course, considering some of Rose’s former clients—from Carmelo Anthony to Julius Randle, from Frank Ntilikina to Eddy Curry, Andrea Bargnani, Renaldo Balkman, and Mardy Collins—one could be forgiven for presuming that Rose has been running the Knicks for quite some time.)

Almost exactly three years ago, MSG security kicked fan favorite Charles Oakley out of the building and Dolan accused the stalwart of alcoholism. (Dolan, who has experienced alcoholism himself, likes to accuse basically anybody who disagrees with him of alcoholism.)

For the record, I wasn't trying to get in a dig on LaVine. He's absolutely improved this year and is probably the biggest (only?) real bright spot for the Bulls development this season. He's also turned out to be well worth that offer sheet the Kangz gave him/Bulls matched. If anything, it was a poor attempt to make fun of the FO/coaching staff who are going to bring up the injury excuse when they inevitably keep their jobs after this season, as they've been doing since the first time Rose blew out his knee way back when. Markannen will be back tonight, but LaVine will still be out so they still won't have their full expected starting rotation.

Speaking of the FO, local rumors are the Bulls are going to try and get Sam Presti, and that he's supposedly open to leaving OKC. That would be an amazing hire for the Bulls, but also so far away from their current MO and no way he'll accept being part of the current braintrust, so I absolutely don't believe that rumor one bit.

I can't offer stiggles trade machine or long ago callback style posts, but I've been stockpiling thoughts on randos. Here's one:

---

John Konchar went undrafted out of IPFW (or whatever that school is called now) after posting good/efficient numbers against bad comp (19.5/8.5/5.4, 2.0 stl, 0.9 blk, 55/38/71) and signed a 2-way deal with Memphis. At the next levels, he's stayed efficient and productive but with super low usage rates:
20 G-league games: 29.1 mpg, 12.2 pts, 8.3 reb, 4.1 ast, 1.8 stl, 1.1 to, 0.7 blk, shooting 57/33/68 (67% from two), PER 22.1, Usg 15.1, WS/48: .204
12 NBA games: 10.7 mpg, 3.4 pts, 2.6 reb, 1.2 ast, 0.6 stl 0.3 to, 0.3 blk, shooting 67/44/78 (78% from two), PER 19.5, Usg 10.4, WS/48: .203
He's a credible multi-position defender, though far from a stopper.

How good is a guy like this, really? He almost never makes mistakes but needs good players around him to take charge of possessions. In particular, he's probably better for a good team than a bad team, right?

Did Marcus Smart not call a referee a "b*tch?" Did I misread him in that video? I'm stunned this is just a $35K fine and not a suspension.

Well, a $35K fine and at least a couple years' worth of every close call going against him.

Vernon Maxwell @VernonMaxwell11 15h

From a distance the Mavs reminds me exactly of the Jazz teams of the 90’s except they aren’t dirty and they are good and they are fun to watch and people like them.

hehehe

[1659] I'm not much of a lipreader, but I thought he yelled "that's bullsh*t" a bunch of times and then told the referee they are horrible a bunch of times as he was dragged away.

Well, the Clippers made themselves worse by adding an unrepentant chucker who doesn't even pretend to play defense, so naturally the Lakers had to respond.

There's no real debate who the MVP is, right? I am a LeBron fanboy but what Giannis is doing incredible and the record is amazing.
   1577. smileyy Posted: March 05, 2020 at 09:16 PM (#5928418)
If Giannis doesn't win it unanimously, something is very wrong. LeBron is great this year; Giannis is greater.

6.7% from three is probably not going to get it done.

Nobody tell STIGGLES, but Al Horford is currently a +24 in a 10-point game.
   1585. tshipman Posted: March 05, 2020 at 11:45 PM (#5928440)
The only question after this game is how ludicrous the STIGGLES trade proposals featuring Shake Milton are going to be.

Is he going to settle for receiving Danny Green, or will he demand that LeBron gets thrown in?

Anyone want to make guesses at how the lottery actually turns out? So many mock drafts around, it might be fun to compare what we anticipate.

so, here's a thought:
if CLE had drafted kawhi in 2011 (as i suggested; i have receipts) instead of SAS, and if MIA wins the 2014 NBA finals since kawhi doesn't get in their way, does lebron ever go back to CLE? and does CLE ever win an NBA title? and does kawhi wind up playing for dave blatt in constantinople like some stephan lasme?

Giannis-Lebron-Luka as a top 3 in the MVP race I imagine.

I was out Tuesday night and there was a lot of news to catch up on (corona virus and super tuesday, of which CO is a part), so I entirely missed that the Nuggets managed to lose to Golden State by 16 at home.

That sort of thing is not encouraging. Though they are one of four western conference teams to have a winning record vs teams above .500. Looks like the Clippers and Rockets each have a couple "bad losses." The Nuggets have lost at home this season to Atlanta, Cleveland and Golden State, plus on the road to Detroit and Washington.

I can't tell if this is just "everyone poops" or if I'm being negative. Seems negative.

Edit: well, everyone but Milwaukee and the Lakers anyway.

I was at that game Tuesday. Absolute poor effort against a team of journeyman, 10 day contracts etc. Especially poor effort on defense. If Jokic moved his feet as much as he ran his mouth, they would be a much better team

Gary Harris has really fallen off a cliff.

I think Denver is pretty much what they are for this year. They're a good team, but not a great team. Their team is young and their needs are fairly clear (more shooting, more defense and toughness on the wing and PF spots). They've got a couple of years to play with that. It'll be interesting to see what they do with their money this offseason.

Oh Gary Harris...yeah, when you’re a shooter who can’t shoot, that’s a problem.
