OT - NBA Thread 2020

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and hopefully none of the other ones posted a duplicate thread to this.

From an article on the suspension on CBS Sports: "teams who played the Jazz in the last 10 days have been told to self-quarantine. That includes the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Oklahoma City Thunder. "

You need very, very, little imagination to see that there is an enormous gap between "worst-case scenario" and "really ####### bad." We might not even be at the latter end, but comparisons to the former serve no purpose.

I think it's important to post the Woj tweet in full:

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn

Jazz star Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for the coronavirus, league sources tell ESPN. Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings. Now a Jazz teammate has tested positive.

Yes, he was listed on the injury report yesterday under "illness". He claimed he would be playing if he had tested negative for the virus.

I said it elsewhere (and in person a lot), but I'm surprised the other leagues haven't been more proactive here. I get it ($$$$$), but why in the world in MLB still playing in front of fans in *spring training*?

The ACC's commissioner gave Florida State the championship trophy today, so there's a precedent. (I don't know about Big 10 tiebreakers, but I assume that Wisconsin won the tiebreaker against those treasonous ##### Maryland.)

   1843. spivey Posted: March 13, 2020 at 08:56 AM (#5930267)
Not to make this a politics thread, but there were a few things that I think really ramped up the severity of the issue to Americans on Wednesday, and the Gobert news was one of them. Now it seems like the obvious solution to suspend games when a player was determined to have the disease. That's what Europe was doing, it's what doctors recommend, etc.

I do wonder if it's such a slam dunk that either the NFL or NCAAF would have done the same thing. The EPL took their sweet time in suspending play as well. Hell, I wonder if the NCAA basketball tournament would still be planned to be played as of right now if Duke and Kansas didn't essentially force their hand.
   1844. Fernigal McGunnigle Posted: March 13, 2020 at 09:30 AM (#5930272)
I can't imagine that the NCAA tournament could've gone on once the leagues started cancelling their tournaments, which I think happened before Duke made their announcement. Though the ACC's decision was made after a phone meeting involving a bunch of university presidents, and it's possible that Duke said what they were planning at that point. But several tournaments, include the Big Ten's, had already been shut down by that point.

I also suspect that a couple of governors might have ordered their state schools' teams not to play.

   1846. Howie Menckel Posted: March 13, 2020 at 09:59 AM (#5930284)
yes, there was a brief window where there was an admission of how craven and meaningless of a money grab conference tournaments are (the Big Ten was expected to get 10 bids, with all 14 teams playing in their tourney mostly for spits and giggles). the hope was that bought enough time to get the Madness in as scheduled.
   1847. puck Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 AM (#5930291)
That seems encouraging that only one other Jazz player tested positive. They supposedly tested 58 people in all, were any of the coaches or trainers infected? I've not heard about the non-players. But they were all on a plane to OKC, right?

Odd quirk on basketball-reference: the cancelled game isn't on the schedule page.

Edit: Shams Charania reported the two players were the only two positive test results.

CDC recommendation of no events of 50-plus people for next two months comes as a number of NBA owners and executives increasingly believe a best case scenario is a mid-to-late June return to play -- with no fans. League's scouting for possible arena dates all the way thru August.
1863. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: March 15, 2020 at 09:24 PM (#5930781)
I don't think it's going to be but a few weeks more before the NBA and NHL are forced to admit there will be no playoffs, and the question becomes whether the 2020-2021 season can start on time. (And whether MLB will have any 2020 season at all.)
   1864. Booey Posted: March 15, 2020 at 10:05 PM (#5930785)
I think they'll concede that the rest of the regular season is cancelled before they give up on the idea of a postseason. Starting the playoffs in a couple months with the current standings isn't ideal, obviously - or even entirely fair, as teams have played a differing number of games and a couple games or less separates several playoff seeds - but it's better than shutting it down entirely.
   1865. spivey Posted: March 15, 2020 at 10:27 PM (#5930792)
I think I come in somewhere between 1863 and 1864. Given the lions share of the money is made through TV, I think within 2-3 months they could conceivably go to closed door games. They'd need to figure out some small logistics, but I think you can do that. But it's hard to see having fans in time for the season or playoffs to happen.

I also think in a few weeks people, even people who understand the social distancing, are going to be clamoring for sports.

Early August- NBA Finals

End of August- Draft

Sept. 1- Start of FA

Sept. 10- Summer/fall league

Dec. 10- training camp opens

Dec. 25- regular season opens (82 games)

Mid-June- NBA season ends

I think the best case scenario looks pretty much like that, with the obvious exception that the 2020-2021 season will end up only being about 40-50 games with playoffs back on normal schedule.

I am personally pessimistic about the epidemic running its course by June (there are just too many idiots in the world) and so I think it's likelier there will be no playoffs and no champion for 2019-2020, and it might be November or December until sports resume anyway.
1868. never forget: the pee tape is 57i66135 Posted: March 16, 2020 at 12:39 AM (#5930828)
it seems likely to me that there will be political pressure applied to the NBA (and other leagues) to get them to resume as soon as plausible.

as soon as there is any kind of dip in the transmission rate, those people will declare "mission accomplished", and rush to get everything up and going again.

and yes, that rush is also likely to result in a second outbreak that will once again bring everything to a halt.

unless they start the 2020-2021 season in mid-December - as league officials said they were examining 10 days ago - before coronavirus had anything to do with their thinking.

They better play exactly enough regular season games to disrupt the standings to prevent a 3-6 Celtics-Sixers series.

In better news, twitter seems to think that ESPN is going to drop the massive Jordan Bulls documentary series earlier than anticipated, which would be great.

Tier 2--I'm playing in May:
Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, David Robinson

Tier 3--this guy was playing against a bunch of construction workers:
Bob Pettit

Each tier is roughly in order.

I'm not exactly sure. I think I'd put Steph #1. His season during the 73 win season was absolutely bonkers.

The bigs are all pretty interchangeable to me. Each has strengths and weaknesses, even within a classification like peak.

With four Nets testing positive, they join Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell from Utah, and Christian Wood from Detroit from the NBA. All of those teams played games in New York between March 4-8.

Nick Kosmider @NickKosmider
Do the math. There are 30 NBA teams with 17 players, including two-ways. That’s 510 players. There are seven of them that we know of who have tested positive, 1.3 percent of the league. Extrapolate that over the U.S. population and you get more than 3 million people. Stay home.

oh, man, sorry Fancy Pants!

minor partial spoiler alert for others: Pitino was "completely exonerated" - just ask him - and "blackballed" and his one regret was hiring an ex-player who he threw under the bus. and he doesn't "have a chip on my shoulder, I have a boulder on my shoulder."

also it's all agents and parents and shoe companies and AAU and - wait, not letting coaches make millions off shoe contracts? basically 'maybe, now that I don't have one anymore.'

Kane Pitman @KanePitman
I will say, it felt like COVID-19 was been treated like an absolute joke until an NBA player tested positive and the season was suspended so while the access for tests continues to be a disaster in the US, if this is what it takes to get people to wake up then it's a minor win.

For many years, NBA players lost their health insurance when they retired. Players such as LeBron James, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Dwyane Wade and Caron Butler pushed to change that. Now, anyone who played 3 years in NBA is covered for life: hoopshype.com/2020/03/02/how…

Worth a read from @Jeff Zillgitt a few days ago -- NBA players aren't getting testing priority because they're celebrities, they're getting it because they've come into contact with so many other people and are especially high risks to spread it usatoday.com/story/sports/n…

Because I have no sports to watch, I come up with idea for when the NBA comes back with no regular season:

• The bottom 4 teams in each conference play a tournament for lottery balls. (I would probably also guarantee them the top 8 spots in the draft.)
• Top 5 seeds in each conference are in – Sorry, Sixers.

• 4-day tournament:
o Day 1: G1 – 7 plays 6, winner in; G2 – 11 plays 10, loser out
o Day 2: G3 – 8 plays G1L, winner in
o Day 3: G4 – 9 plays G2W, loser out
o Day 4: G5 – G3W plays G4W, winner in

This play is much more about the assist than the dunk, but this Rondo pass to Tony Allen dunk is probably my single favorite NBA play ever, game context-free. The baseline cam picture is a thing of beauty.
