So if Minnesota can beat Iowa and Northwestern, they should make the Big 10 Championship game even with a loss to Wisconsin since the Badgers have lost 2 in the Big 10, right?

Though given how they got past Penn State today I'm pretty sure I'd be happy if they held OSU close on neutral turf come the championship game.

Bama really telegraphed that 3rd-and-3 pass

I don't think it's possible for an end-of-half scenario to play out more catastrophically than it just did for Alabama.

I spent twenty minutes trying to figure out the 'reestablish inbounds' rule and still have no clue if it was the right call. Does anyone actually know?

Pretty weak of Saban not to go for it midfield on 4th and 4 down 20.

   206. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: November 09, 2019 at 06:03 PM (#5900091)
The explanation (per Steve Shaw, via Gene Steratore) is apparently that officials ruled Moss was forced out of bounds, which means he doesn't need to re-establish before touching the ball. I am...skeptical that he was actually forced out.
   207. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 09, 2019 at 06:05 PM (#5900092)
If forced out, you only need to reestablish in bounds before touching the ball. If not forced out, it's illegal touching whether you reestablish or not.

Fourth quarter, and Virginia Tech leads Wake Forest 23-17 with the ball at Wake's 21.

Make that the two.

Ah. I can't believe they said Moss was forced out but now it makes more sense.

It looked like Tua had a lane to the end zone there, but didn't want to try it on his ankle.

Furious rallies in the Big Ten.

Illinois, down 31-10 entering the fourth, scored twice and then had a pick-six -- only to miss the extra point. After a Michigan State field goal, got the ball back with three minutes left, picked up a 4th-and-17, and now has the ball at the one in the final minute trailing 34-30.

Iowa, meanwhile, trailed 21-6 in the fourth and missed a two-point try trailing 24-22 with three minutes left. Taylor then broke a 42-yard run, then another first down just iced it.
   213. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 09, 2019 at 07:20 PM (#5900102)
It would be so LSU to blow this in the final 90 seconds.

I acknowledge that it represents regional prejudice on my part, but I will never be able to take Ed Orgeron seriously. I don't care if he wins 10 straight national championships.
   215. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 09, 2019 at 07:24 PM (#5900104)
Illinois blows 1st-and-goal from the one, but Michigan State commits pass interference on a fade from the four on fourth down.
   216. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 09, 2019 at 07:28 PM (#5900107)
Illinois again gets blown up on first down, but a sprintout to the right on second down from the five eventually ends with a receiver getting lost along the back line. 37-34 with five seconds left, and Michigan State runs laterally on the kickoff and never pitches the ball, ending the game.

Never, ever saw this Illinois turnaround coming. That team looked like garbage, then suddenly shocked Wisconsin and is now on a four-game winning streak and going bowling.

as a matter of fact, this was the WORST possible outcome for non-SEC schools. If Bama doesn't score that last TD, they are out--now they are most certainly in if they win out

lots of dopey stats on these broadcasts, but I like this one:

only 3 schools have not lost by more than 2 TDs in the last 3 years, and two of them facing each other tonight: Oklahoma and Iowa St (which trails by 2 TDs early)

the other, per the broadcast, is Washington

Down 21 at half, Iowa State storms back and scores a TD down seven. Opts to go for the game-winning two-point conversion, and Oklahoma gets a miracle interception in the endzone.

Loooooot of contact on that route.

That should have been DPI on the 2-point conversion. The ball was thrown perfectly and the receiver would have had it if he hadn't been manhandled.

Clownish last three minutes from App State as it tried to blow a 20-9 lead. South Carolina lined up for a 51-yard field goal and committed a false start, so brought the offense back on the field for 4th-and-15. A 15-yard out beat the corner who was more worried about getting burned deep than defending the sticks, then a quick slant on the next play turned into a touchdown when a linebacker went for a kill shot instead of wrapping up and got in another guy's way while he was at it. App State then fielded a squib kick at the four and took a knee, which ultimately led to giving the ball back at midfield with 1:50 left.

After picking up one first down, Hilinski took a sack to set up 4th-and-18. He dumped the ball off short to Dowdle, who eluded three defenders to pick up 20. A false start and three incompletions set up another 4th-and-15, and Dowdle curled out of the backfield, and it turns out no one was assigned to him or anywhere in the middle of the field, allowing him to run through completely unoccupied space for a gain of 26.

With time for two plays from the nine, South Carolina committed a hold on the first to push the ball back to the 19 with six seconds left, then App State totally blew a coverage leaving a receiver all alone in the end zone, only to be bailed out by the combination of Hilinski throwing the ball out the back of the end zone and a hold.

If I was in a position of power in college FB, I would be embarrassed at the likelihood of Alabama scamming its way into the Final 4 - given their scheduling shenanigans, among other things.

but as a casual fan, damn right I'm more likely to watch a game they play in - hoping to see them get humiliated (while fearing that they won't). so kudos, champions of amateur integrity!

Why, yes, I did spend time determining what outcomes I needed to root for to get the ACC to 12 bowl teams. It's actually possible to get Syracuse over the line as well, but I've given up on that dream because it would just compromise Duke for likely no gain.

I have never previously seen a defensive back called for targeting after diving with his arms out in an attempt to intercept the pass.

Michigan State has a stretch-for-the-goal-line touchdown that gets reviewed, and in showing the replays, Fox repeatedly freezes like 12 frames after the guy's knee touches, showing the ball breaking the plane, leading Joel Klatt to insist it's a touchdown. Then when the booth correctly overturns it, Klatt gets bent out of shape about how the booth must be engaging in supposition and not basing decisions on what it actually sees.

Possible shootout brewing in Happy Valley. Indiana forced a three-and-out on the opening series then muffed the punt, but a touchdown-touchdown-field goal-touchdown-touchdown sequence has followed.

That was a tough call. Incomplete might have been the best call. I can't see giving to Missouri. The Missouri player didn't get possession until well after both were down.

On the one hand, UF has felt like the better team all game long, only to have a few miscues keep it close. On the other hand, they've also received a few breaks at critical moments that could have swung the game to Missouri.

Which, I suppose, mostly evens out and gets you a 14-point Florida lead.

Missouri: Illegal formation.

Missouri: Holding.

Missouri: Late hit out of bounds.

My comment was directed at Mizzou dropping a pick-six way back when.

Michigan State lines up to go for its third 4th-and-1 of the game, commits a false start, gets its subsequent punt blocked, and Michigan scores on the next play. 34-10, and I can now concentrate more fully on Indiana's efforts to make me regret making that early call based on dubious exit polls.

Fairly straight-forward juggling of skillsets. Trask can run a little, but he's mostly a pocket passer, while Emory Jones can throw a little, but he's still a redshirt freshman who's mostly a runner. And right now, Jones is probably Florida's most effective running back. Plus, he can throw well enough that you can't sell out completely to stop the run when he's brought in.

It's...mostly worked out all right for Florida so far, but there's been a little awkwardness in a few games.

Penn State fakes an inside zone handoff, the ball is dropped and bounces right back up like a basketball, so instead of setting up 3rd-and-15ish after having to dive on it, Clifford completes a pass for a first down. Penn State now driving.
   255. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: November 16, 2019 at 03:10 PM (#5901673)
There's also the unspoken need to keep Jones happy, lest he enter the transfer portal.

How does Danielson not know the rule about a ball fumbled forward and out of bounds? Offenses would "fumble" for gains on every play near the sideline if that weren't in place.

Clemson jumped on Wake 14-0 in the first five minutes, but then kinda stalled until a lightning-fast 80-yard drive to go up 24-3 with 42 second before the half. An interception returned to the 30 and an immediate strike to Higgins made it 31-3 just 29 seconds later.

Minnesota kicking from the 2-yd line, down 17, on the last play of the half. Off the upright and in. With this being such an offensive game, it seems like a bad decision. Minnesota should want to increase variance here trailing by 2+ scores, and kicking a FG is not the way to do that.

Minnesota has actually been mostly fine on offense, but can't finish their drives.

edit: under 15% chance to win now, per halftime odds.

what i'm about to say cannot even qualify as suspicion, because i don't know if what you said is accurate, and even if it is, i don't recall anything like that happening before, and finally, i have no idea what the actual implications of that injury are....but:

Ugh, feel awful for Tua. I figured he'd be with my Dolphins next year, and now that whole plan is out of whack. I hope Tua had some form of catastrophic insurance just in case.

How much falls on Saban here? Tua clearly wasn't 100% against LSU, so did he really need to play against a Miss St team that Alabama beats with any poster here as QB?

Mike, I wouldn't put anything on anyone. Playing football is dangerous. And, yeah, it really sucks for the kid. I share your hope that he had a big insurance payday.

Naturally Minnesota goes for it on 4th and 4 in the 3rd quarter, but kicked on 4th and 2 not long ago.

Dropped by the offensive player. Now it gets crazy. Late hit by Iowa so Minn will keep the ball. Can you make a bigger boneheaded play than that? Yes you can. Minnesota head coach comes roaring out onto the field screaming at the refs about the late hit, and he gets a flag. Penalties offset. Ball goes back to Iowa. Holy ####.

edit: it would have been Iowa football anyway they say if the Minn head coach had not come on to the field, since the last hit was after the drop. I guess I should watch more NCAAF... I could have sworn that was not the rule in the pros.

Ugh, Minnesota. Completely dominant third quarter, and it could have been capped with a slant for a tying touchdown on 4th-and-4 from the 14, and instead it's a drop.

It looked innocuous, but he landed on his knee at just such an angle to drive the femur into the socket

This is not a sentence I needed to read today.

Late hit by Iowa so Minn will keep the ball.

They called it dead ball, so it just would've been 1st-and-10 Iowa back at the seven.
   275. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:34 PM (#5901719)
Yep. That seems strange... but maybe it's how they've always called it? What makes it a dead ball? Ball hit the ground before the hit? Is that the same for hitting a guy out of bounds?

edit: online it says after the whistle has blown. It was a split-second play...
   276. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:34 PM (#5901720)
Welcome to 2019, Syracuse. Nice of you to show up just in time to play spoiler against teams trying to make bowls.
   277. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:37 PM (#5901721)
I think it was that the hit came several steps after the drop. If it'd been some kind of personal foul on the pass breakup, or a hit that egregiously late on the quarterback as the play continued elsewhere, that would've kept it alive.

368-263 yardage advantage. Stop shooting yourselves in the foot!

right after I made post #269, Texas goes on 2 long TD drives to take the lead (they can thank me later)
   279. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:45 PM (#5901724)
Morgan would be advised to stop throwing into double coverage.
   280. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:46 PM (#5901725)
Apparently the ball is dead (for penalty purposes) as soon as the ball hits the ground, a player's knee goes down, or a player goes OOB (etc.), even before a whistle. I didn't know that.

If you are defending your goal line, you have what amounts to a free shot on the offense if you can stop them on 4th down.
   281. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:50 PM (#5901726)
That was Minnesota's first punt, and worst drive by far.

Auburn pulls off a nifty surprise onsides kick and recovers...only to have it overturned on review because one of their receivers blocked a UGA player when the ball went nine yards instead of 10. Didn't know that was a rule, didn't know that was reviewable. There's a gut punch for you.

WVU...might...win? Not likely, but possible.

I just assume the video is Theismann-esque.
   285. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:03 PM (#5901730)
It actually looks like nothing. It's only after finding out it was a hip injury that you can surmise that landing knee-first, a completely routine occurrence, must've been the culprit.
   286. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:04 PM (#5901732)
Is Auburn actually gonna do this?
   287. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:09 PM (#5901733)
Minnesota likely needs clock and time outs, down 10 with 1st and goal from the 1 with the clock running, so they run down the whole play clock (and 30+ seconds of game clock) and have to call time out.

They got the TD so it's game on. But then they missed the XP. Down 4 now.
   288. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:09 PM (#5901734)
Texas jumps offside as Iowa State lines up for a go-ahead 42-yard kick with two minutes left, gifting a first down. Iowa State then turtles away the clock and wins it at the gun.
   289. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:12 PM (#5901735)
Auburn now in Georgia territory trailing by seven with five to play.
   290. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:17 PM (#5901736)
Williams had his left foot down before the right heel touched out of bounds, but he bobbled the ball after the heel touched down.
   291. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:22 PM (#5901737)
1:52 to go 80 yards with no timeouts was doable, but Morgan taking a terrible sack after having an opportunity to get rid of the ball and burning 25 seconds pretty much ended it.
   292. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:25 PM (#5901738)
Minnesota was the better team today. If they hadn't been such a sieve on defense early they would have won easily.

Likely sets up a play-in against Wisconsin for the B1G championship game though.
   293. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:29 PM (#5901739)
Auburn loses for want of an accurate swing pass on 4th-and-2. Second bite at the apple ended in disaster.

I really don't want to watch Oklahoma-Baylor.

294--they're gonna call that "targeting"??

Wait a sec, if Lance isn't here, nobody's here.

Lance, why not? This is the first time in like 10,000 of your posts I've skimmed that I've seen anything like a personal preference
other than "college football is good"....
   297. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 16, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5901745)
Stoerner alert!

Lance, why not?

The game just creates a contradictory jumble of rooting interests -- wanting to see frauds exposed; wanting as many alternatives as possible available to stymie SEC postseason ambitions, etc. -- that creates a loud dissonance in my brain. And I had no expectation of the quality of game outweighing that. Yet of course I was going to watch. Just like I watch crappy December bowl games.
   298. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: November 16, 2019 at 08:46 PM (#5901747)
What the hell has gotten into Baylor??
   299. nick swisher hygiene Posted: November 16, 2019 at 09:03 PM (#5901749)
Lance, if Georgia knocks off LSU in the conference final, we're all ######. Unless Baylor wins this like 63-10.
