Upon his death, Nebraska fans rewrote history, eliding the fact that Flippin had been disrespected, discriminated against, and run out of town. A World-Herald sportswriter memorialized Flippin as “the charging bull, into which was bred the tenacity of the bulldog, the ferocity of the tiger, the gameness of the man who knows no fear.” Left unsaid was the fact that Black athletes were no longer allowed to compete for Nebraska. In 1892, Nebraska students had marveled that Missouri would defend the idea of racial segregation in a “progressive age.” By the 1910s, they had joined Missouri’s side, drawing a color line that would remain in place until after World War II.

Couple of questions

1) Kansas State had their 9th player enter the transfer portal this week. Does anyone know what a typical number for a program is? If you have a player leave through this method, do you get that scholarship slot back?

2) This one is way more subjective, but was wondering what others thought. K-State and KU both have bye weeks today. They have already played each other, so they aren't both getting the week off before their game. I am personally more likely to watch a KU game when KSU is not playing than say Texas Tech vs TCU. My perception is this is generally true, and OU fan is more likely to watch OK St than another game, Iowa and Iowa State etc. Obviously Iowa and Iowa State's schedule aren't controlled by the same league, but man other matchups are. Did the Big 12 make a mistake giving both teams the week off, or does it make no difference?

On top of KU and KSU having the week off, the Mizzou game is scrubbed and the Chiefs are also on a bye week. So no local games in the KC area this weekend. Very odd.

it varies pretty widely. generally, players who enter the portal can be thrown into one of a few baskets:

1: highly rated recruit who wants more playing time in a comparable program
2: upperclassman with a degree who's buried on the depth chart and wants more playing time at a smaller school
3: upperclassman with a degree who is an all-conference talent and wants to play at a bigger school.
4: player suffered racial abuse and wants to gtfo
5: new coach, who dis
6: program is falling apart

Gators redeem these terrible orange jerseys with an opening TD.

Or at least partially redeem ... they'll always be terrible.

USC gets another catch off a deflection, setting up the go-ahead touchdown with 25 seconds left. This stuff becomes even more enormous in a six-game season.

You can't stop *checks notes* Feleipe Franks, you can only hope to contain him.

When an offense is going to run a last-play lateral fest, it should insert linebackers or something as offensive linemen. Those plays are so much less likely to work with five guys on the field who struggle to even catch pitches, let alone advance the ball.
   110. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:29 PM (#5988747)
Hey check that out, for once having two receivers in the same place works out.

Always appreciate Mullen's fourth down aggressiveness. Not going to work out every time, unfortunately.

OK, I'm about to drop a truth bomb on you people, and it's going to be the most controversial thing I've ever said:

These Baker Mayfield stadium commercials are kinda funny.

(I'm not sure they're good advertising though - I've seen a million of them and honestly have no idea what they're actually for)
   113. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:35 PM (#5988750)
Hey, Feleipe Franks holds the ball for too long and gets sacked by multiple defenders 10 yards deep in the pocket! There's the Franks I remember.

ETA: And then throws out wide to a covered receiver for a loss! After trying some new stuff early, he's back to playing the hits.
   114. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:37 PM (#5988752)
The Mayfield ads are for...insurance or something, right?

(They are funny, though)
   115. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:44 PM (#5988754)
I don't know that "Feleipe Franks fits a timing route into tight coverage" is my call on 4th and 1.
   116. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:46 PM (#5988755)
Meanwhile, Trask is a 1st-down machine on the ground today.
   117. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:51 PM (#5988756)
"QB run is always a danger when Emory Jones is in the game" says the broadcaster. Someone's been watching their game tape! And then Jones throws it anyway for a loss. Pointless.

But I guess it worked out in the end - Arkansas so shocked that they subsequently forget to call a pass coverage on the following play. Mullen 11th-dimensional chess ftw.
   118. Howie Menckel Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:58 PM (#5988758)
anyone follow the Pac 12?

17-13 USC at the half

in the 3rd quarter, USC marches down the field on three straight drives to inside the AZ 10 yard line. 2 first and goals, and a 4th and goal at the 2.

Arizona manages only four plays in the entire quarter.

smells like a blowout, right?

but it went:
- USC settling for FG
- AZ TD on one play
- USC missing a chip shot field goal after 3rd and inches to goal barely failed
- AZ 3 and out
- USC goes for it on 4th down at the 2 and fails

absolutely terrible playcalling by USC, which also got killed by obvious offensive penalties

so 3 "red zone squared" drives net 3 total points, and after all that domination it's 20-20 to start the 4th quarter

I can't call the USC coaches Pop Warner coaches and insult Pop Warner coaches. but what's the deal there?

USC won at the last second for the second week in a row, but what a hot mess they are
   119. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 07:59 PM (#5988759)
That Arkansas possession just about gave me PTSD ... Franks holding the ball forever, almost certainly overlooking wide-open receivers downfield (I mean, we've all seen this UF defense operate, right?), and then scrambling into nothing on 3rd-and-14.

Yes, but I'd prefer not to test it too often with the "fumbled flea-flicker" play. But hey, it worked!
   123. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:19 PM (#5988764)
As great as Trask is, he really does set up his receivers to take some bad hits. Grimes is a little lucky he didn't get tee'd up there.

What the hell is Arkansas doing in their secondary?
   124. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:25 PM (#5988765)
I suppose that 2nd-and-10 Trask keeper was inevitable after the two first downs earlier.
   125. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:25 PM (#5988766)
On the plus side for Arkansas, they're doing a better job than Georgia covering running backs out of the backfield.

On the negative side for Arkansas, everything else.
   126. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:31 PM (#5988767)
On the negative side for Arkansas, everything else.

Yeah but if I were an Arkansas fan, could I even be mad? I don't know how I'd go about trying to stop this offense. They're running a dozen guys into the game who can make a play and the line is solid in protection. There's just nothing you can do scheme-wise, I don't think ... you need top-of-the-line athletes to win matchups and that's never going to be Arkansas.
   127. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:32 PM (#5988768)
I've kind of assumed that Trask wouldn't be very attractive to NFL teams due to the injury history, the relative lack of big-time experience and his relatively unimpressive physical tools. But he's pulling a Burrow -- playing so brilliantly that you just have to ignore the other stuff. Burrow's more athletic, but the "arm talent" seems pretty comparable.
   128. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 08:58 PM (#5988769)
The big question I have about Trask is how he'd hold up to an NFL pass rush. He really has the luxury of facing infrequent pressure with the Gators and having time to find open receivers, and even the worst NFL defense would be in his face a lot more than he's had to deal with this season. Maybe he'd be fine, but it seems like it's at least an open question ... he does have a tendency to force throws at times.

Meanwhile the defense got drunk at halftime.

Haven't said this a lot this year, but that's a hell of a play by Marco Wilson.
   130. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:12 PM (#5988772)
Marco Wilson's gotten a lot of criticism this season but my goodness what a tackle that was on third down.

ESPN showing this comprehensive listing of UF quarterbacks post-Tebow is violence against me, and I demand compensation for my emotional distress.
   132. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:17 PM (#5988775)
I actually missed most of it - I looked up just in time to see "Malik Zaire" and thought, oh right.

Skyler Mornhinweg *shudder*.
   134. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:22 PM (#5988777)
The hell of it is that they had a bunch of guys who turned out to be pretty good for other teams! Driskel, Grier, Brissett, even Tyler Murphy had a decent year at BC ... not so much Skyler Mornhinweg.
   135. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:26 PM (#5988779)
I don't know about you guys but I'm seriously LOLing at Michigan.

ETA: and also the delay of game on the first play of the drive.
   136. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:44 PM (#5988781)
This is what I'm talking about - the Gators' top offensive playmaker is out for this game, and what happens? Some 12th-string TE named "Keon Zipperer" catches two touchdowns in his place. This isn't just a good offense, it's an extraordinarily deep offense.
   137. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:56 PM (#5988783)
I don't know why opposing offenses do anything against the Gators except a) run up the middle, or b) throw deep.
   138. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: November 14, 2020 at 09:58 PM (#5988784)
Is this Gator team good enough to justify the way the announcer she are just writing them into the SEC title game? Have not followed closely this year, but LSU is a challenge, right?
   139. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:01 PM (#5988785)
No, LSU thoroughly sucks this year. UF might get 600 yards passing against them. The toughest remaining game might well be against Kentucky.

Rick Wells, huh? Mullen's really digging deep.
   140. yo la tengo (the poor man's Ron Darling) Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:05 PM (#5988786)
How did LSU take such a dive so quickly? I guess the follow up question then is do the Gators match up with Bama reasonably well? It sure is fun to think of them beating Bama like in the good old days when I lived in Gainesville
   141. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:08 PM (#5988787)
LSU was absolutely devastated by the draft on both sides of the ball, and then they lost some of their best remaining players to COVID-19 opt-outs. They also made some (apparently) bad coordinator hires, especially on defense, and they're a disaster over there. Plus, even after last year I still refuse to believe in Ed Orgeron.

Bama gonna Bama. They're going to score a ton of points if they end up matching up with UF in the SEC Championship Game. On the other hand, their defense isn't as impenetrable as usual. UF can win that game, I think, but they'll need to score 50 to do it.
   142. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:09 PM (#5988788)
Alabama-Florida may well be a 50-50 game - as in, both teams might score 50. I think Alabama would be favored because the Gators' defense just is not good, but I definitely think the Gators can compete in that game.
   143. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:15 PM (#5988791)
Well, the Gators have now set a school record for points in the series against Arkansas, topping their 56-7 win against the Hogs in 1997, a game that I attended but have no specific memories of.
   144. Brian C Posted: November 14, 2020 at 10:22 PM (#5988792)
Also the first time they've scored 60 since Idaho in 2018, and the first time against an FBS team since New Mexico State in 2015, and the first time against an SEC team since Kentucky in 2008.
   145. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: November 15, 2020 at 12:26 AM (#5988799)
Going to guess this was the first time a team lost w a 300+ yd rusher in a game.

   147. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: November 15, 2020 at 01:06 AM (#5988802)
Oregon survived an always dangerous trip to Pullman despite three turnovers and a pretty shaky defense. The defense's performance was somewhat disappointing, but the offense is young and is going to make mistakes. It's encouraging to see them overcome those and come out with a two score win.
   148. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 15, 2020 at 07:55 PM (#5988877)
Looks like South Carolina has fired Muschamp.
   149. Brian C Posted: November 15, 2020 at 10:01 PM (#5988882)
Jim McElwain, dust off your resume!

I wonder where Muschamp goes now. Does he still have defensive coordinator pixie dust? I can't imagine that anyone will give him a head coaching job unless he wants to go C-USA or something.

Reportedly Muschamp's buyout is a completely ridiculous $15 million(!!!!!), so whatever else one might want to say about Muschamp, I'd trust him to recommend an agent if I ever need one.
   150. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 12:12 PM (#5990452)
Nothing like getting up at the crack of dawn* to watch Vandy march down the field against the Gator defense like an NFL team scrimmaging against a bunch of high schoolers.

* - OK it's 10am MST but still
   151. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 21, 2020 at 12:16 PM (#5990455)
Are schools allowed to pipe in crowd noise? Because it sounds like Vandy's piping in crowd noise, and there's some weird echoing effect that's giving me a headache.
   152. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 12:23 PM (#5990457)
I don't have the volume up high enough to really hear it very well but it definitely sounds like there's more crowd noise than 47 people in the stands could generate (numbers approximated).

Speaking of looking like NFL teams scrimmaging against high schoolers, Toney juked that defender so bad that the defender literally just fell down. Couldn't even reach out and grab him as he tried to do on his way down.

Drops on fourth down are just what Indiana needs.

Indiana in trouble unless Fields keeps up the nine-interception pace. Probably even then.
   155. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 12:59 PM (#5990477)
The obstinate reflexive stupidity of broadcasters, part 1 million:

Vandy has a 4th-and-10 at the Gators 44 with an unlikely 10-7 lead and the Vandy offense generally chewing up the UF defense. Broadcaster of course argues that Vandy really needs to punt and "force the Gators to go 90 yards". There's just so many layers of wrong here that it's hard to even go through them all, but HAS ANYONE WATCHED THE GATORS OFFENSE THIS YEAR? THEY'RE NOT SCARED TO GO 90 YARDS AGAINST VANDERBILT.

Naturally it was a poor punt anyway and the Gators have the ball at the 18 now.
   156. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 01:03 PM (#5990478)
That said, Gators are still asleep.
   157. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 21, 2020 at 01:05 PM (#5990479)
Hoosier offense comes out of hibernation to hit a 68-yard pass setting up a touchdown.

Put Malik Davis in at CB.
   159. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 01:28 PM (#5990488)
LOL at that TD call surviving review.
   160. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 21, 2020 at 01:32 PM (#5990492)
Indiana's defense couldn't hold forever, and considering its offense's contribution to the cause has consisted of basically one play, 21-7 feels over.
   161. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 01:33 PM (#5990493)

What's weird about these Dr. Pepper Fansville commercials is not that they're bad, it's that they're bad and Dr. Pepper is so committed to them. They've been on the air for years, they have serialized storylines (including one in which a woman cheats on her husband and has a child with the other man, only to pass the kid off as her husband's), good production values and a whole mythology. Like, somewhere in ad agency there's probably a series bible for Fansville.
   166. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 02:29 PM (#5990525)
The one defense that I'll put forth for the Fansville commercials is that I actually know what brand they're advertising - for better or worse, they're super easy to associate with Dr. Pepper.

For a counterexample, I'll offer the "Lilly" cell-phone ads, which are omnipresent. I know they're for some cell-phone carrier! But I have no idea which one, and this is true even though I just saw one a couple minutes ago and made a point to see who it was. But I've already forgotten; whoever it is, it's completely incidental to the actual content of the ads.

Same with the Heisman House ads. Whoever they're advertising, it's in one ear and out the other. Just no brand association at all.
   167. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 21, 2020 at 02:35 PM (#5990527)
Yeah, but Lilly is adorable, so I'm OK with those.
   168. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 02:38 PM (#5990531)
I'm not 100% in agreement - she's more like a corporate conception of someone who I'm supposed to think is adorable.

Anyhoo, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Gators' defense is going to get better at tackling.

Edit: I mean that they're going to **need to** get better at tackling.
   169. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 03:02 PM (#5990540)
That punt should be a touchback!
   170. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 21, 2020 at 03:06 PM (#5990542)
If you must start at your own one-yard-line, gaining 50 yards on the first two plays of the drive is a pretty good way of going about it.
   171. Brian C Posted: November 21, 2020 at 03:13 PM (#5990543)
Yeah that Florida drive is courtesy of the football gods, who obviously decided to punish Vandy for punting from the Gator 39 down two TDs in the 4th quarter as an overwhelming underdog, even if it was 4th-and-24.

"Oh you thought it worked because you pinned them on the 1, did you? We'll teach you."
   172. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: November 21, 2020 at 03:26 PM (#5990545)
I wonder if they might move Malik Davis to slot receiver next year. I like him more as a pass catcher than as a straight-forward running back, and with Demarckus Bowman transferring in that running back room is pretty crowded.

Its fun seeing michigan lose.

Tennessee is reliably getting six yards every single rush, then they decide to go to the air and Guarantano throws a pick-six.

I hope Jeremy Pruitt stays at Tennessee forever.

"Jumped forward, causing the offense to react."

That's, uh, not the rule.

There's no way that wasn't a touchdown for Oregon State.

If you're looking for a reason to care about Vandy-Mizzou, Vanderbilt has a player from the women's soccer team in uniform due to COVID issues on their special teams unit.

LOVE THAT FAKE PUNT
   180. Brian C Posted: November 28, 2020 at 12:18 PM (#5991400)
Such a Mark Stoops move to be completely unprepared for a fake punt no more complicated than a direct snap to the starting RB.

...and also to leave Kyle Pitts behind the entire defense. LOL.

If Pitts hadn't missed two games (and was gimpy in the second half of the A&M game) he might well have broken 1,000 yards as a tight end in a 10-game season.

I wonder if Pitts could do some of the old Aaron Hernandez stuff -- not, you know, that stuff, but taking jet sweeps, serving as the pitch man on option plays, etc. On the other hand, you probably don't need to get tricky with him when, "Go downfield and outrun defensive backs for 60-yard touchdowns" is a legit playcall.

Who do I want to see lose more, Michigan or Penn State? I feel like either one losing is a really great story.

But I guess it's more fun to see Harbaugh humiliated than James Franklin.

Actually when I put it like that, it's not even close.
   184. Brian C Posted: November 28, 2020 at 12:29 PM (#5991404)
Weird of UK to punt on 4th-and-2 near midfield after going for it twice already in this game.

I feel like the great beauty of the Everything Works offense is that you can keep things fairly simple.

Chris Doering - pretty decent analyst? I know this isn't his usual beat, but he's an upgrade over Dan Orlovsky so far.

Mullen seems pretty furious at Grantham right now.
   187. Brian C Posted: November 28, 2020 at 01:16 PM (#5991411)
Yeah and Grantham's attitude about it seems to be roughly "get off my back, you loudmouth a**hole".

Anybody who claims the term "game manager" started with McElroy and McCarron at Alabama is not qualified to be calling games.

I've been waiting for Toney to do something awesome as a returner, and there you go.

Also, whoever UF's special teams coach is, that was a pretty nifty set-up there.

I want to take this back - apparently UK is completely unprepared for any kind of trickery at all. Imagine seeing two punt returners deep and deciding to cover the guy who's not Kadarius Toney.
   192. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 28, 2020 at 01:34 PM (#5991417)
I can understand that play working when it's the jammer on that side bailing and receiving the punt, but the way Florida did it shouldn't have fooled anybody.

That double pass was a very laborious way of gaining eight yards there. But hey, everything works!

Apparently we've replaced the Everything Works offense with the Everyone Draws a Facemask Penalty offense. Hey, still gets you down the field.

Sarah Fuller kicked off for Vanderbilt to start the second half. First woman to kick in a Power Five game.

What was really odd about that play is that it didn't even look like the Gators had anyone deep - one UF receiver snuck into the secondary late, after Toney was already scrambling around. I'm not sure who he was even supposed to throw to. UK's secondary was on to it so it wouldn't have mattered anyway, though.

That aside, I'm really impressed with his actual QB skills there. Just tuck it, scramble around and find a guy open for a first down. Very nicely done.
   197. Brian C Posted: November 28, 2020 at 02:11 PM (#5991422)
Man, UK coming out this half like they just realized that the line is UF -24 and they all have money riding on the game for UF.
   198. Brian C Posted: November 28, 2020 at 02:26 PM (#5991423)
It's like the old cliche goes: you can't stop Kyle Pitts, you can only hope to make the other Gators fumble the ball away enough that you can outscore him.

It did not take long for this game to go from upset alert to Gator blowout.

Kelvin Joseph spent the entire week saying that he was going to shut down Florida's receivers, got burned by Pitts on the opening drive, then managed to ruin a fumble recovery by committing a wildly stupid penalty after the play was over. Good week for him.
