That fourth down play *should* have worked. Kentucky's guy in the flat had nobody within 20 yards of him, but the pass took about six months to reach him, and he didn't really adjust his route at all once he caught the ball. It looked like he was just resigned to going out of bounds two yards short of the marker.

I don't know if I'm calling QB power with my Heisman frontrunner up by 21 in the fourth quarter against Kentucky.

Well, kind of a sloppy game in a lot of ways and the Gators seemed a little sleepy through most of it. But in years past, those kinds of off-days resulted in nail-biters against bad teams, so in a way it says a lot about this team that the outcome was never in real doubt even when the score was close.
   204. Brian White Posted: November 28, 2020 at 04:12 PM (#5991436)
For the afternoon spot, it would be nice to have a game which is highly relevant, likely to be close, and stupidly/hilariously entertaining. Iron bowl fails the second requirement, Northwestern/MSU fails the third. And of the three requirements, 'relevance' is probably the least important. So the Egg Bowl it is!

That eighth ranking sure aged well.

While there is no official minimum number of games needed to qualify for the College Football Playoff, the selection committee is not likely to look favorably upon a team with such a small record. The Big Ten also requires a team play six games to be eligible for the Big Ten Championship, which it is no longer clear Ohio State will do.

However! There is an exception to this rule. The Big Ten’s minimum requirement drops to four if the average number of games played across the conference is fewer than 5.5. That would happen if 12 of the Big Ten’s 14 remaining games are canceled. It does not seem likely the number will get there, but many schools are trying their hardest. Minnesota reported 40 positive tests in a 10-day span, so their game against Northwestern is canceled; Wisconsin has played a total of three games this season. If Ohio State is ineligible, Indiana gets to represent the Big Ten East in the championship game, which would be nice for them, but probably nicer had Indiana’s quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., not torn his ACL this weekend and been declared out for the season on Monday. The problem with a sport premised on disregard for the health of players is that eventually you run out of players. We are perilously close to “Big Ten Champion Northwestern.”

No, not my precious Sun Bowl!
   209. Howie Menckel Posted: December 01, 2020 at 08:27 PM (#5991947)
Ohio State is getting into the playoff - and that's all, folks.
   210. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 03:44 PM (#5992605)
On the one hand, Harrison Bailey's first pass of the game was a wildly underthrown deep out. On the other hand, if it was on target it probably would have been returned for a pick-six. A victory for the Vols!
   211. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:05 PM (#5992608)
For some reason these blue helmets aren't working for me like the throwback blue helmets from earlier in the season. The blue is too dark of a shade maybe? I'm not sure what it is, but in this uni combo, they don't really look like the Gators to me.
   212. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:07 PM (#5992609)
Trask had a football-sized window into which to fit that 3rd down throw, and he completed it.
   213. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:08 PM (#5992610)
That's a stupid OPI call.
   214. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:08 PM (#5992611)
Yeah that call was awful.
   215. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:12 PM (#5992612)
Mullen's really going to punt here? Seems like that can't be right.

... good result but still, yeesh.
   216. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:14 PM (#5992614)
That is some gross playcalling there. A 2nd and 18 run for nothing, a third down wide receiver screen, then punting on fourth and five from the opposing 41. That's the sort of stuff Mullen has avoided all season.

He also needs to cool it with running the ball on first and second down. You have the Heisman frontrunner, the closest thing college football has to Travis Kelce and a bevvy of talented receivers. You don't need to do this Woody Hayes stuff.
   217. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:15 PM (#5992615)
I think that WR screen could have even gotten the first down had the WR cut to the inside, not outside. The play was set up properly and there was space.

Punting from the opposing 40 is always stupid, even if you did end up pinning them at the 2.
   218. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:17 PM (#5992617)
I wonder why the Gators have such a hard time running the ball. The line is pretty good with pass protection, and they seem to have decent backs, defenses can't even play the run because the passing game is awesome, and yet...

Just seems like even an average line and average backs should be a lot more productive.
   219. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:23 PM (#5992619)
That was a very stupid and very obvious penalty.
   220. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:29 PM (#5992622)
Man, this defense. What the hell were they doing on that TD? It's like they only had 8 guys out there.
   221. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:37 PM (#5992624)
Not a single rush on that drive, huh?

My consulting fees are very reasonable, Coach.
   222. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:43 PM (#5992627)
The start for this hastily organized BYU-Coastal Carolina game keeps getting pushed back, much to my annoyance.
   223. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:44 PM (#5992628)
Mad respect for that fake punt call.
   224. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:45 PM (#5992629)
I'm guessing that was actually a punter's option, where the punter can still kick it if nothing's open. But yeah, great play design.
   225. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:46 PM (#5992630)
Oh man Trask you have to throw the ball away on that part of the field, not take a sack there.
   226. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:47 PM (#5992631)
Real missed opportunity to re-enact the Gators' 4th-and-15-from-the-35 conversion in 1996 right there.
   227. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:48 PM (#5992633)
Seemed like Trask had a receiver open in the end zone on the third down play, though that's always easier to say when watching a slow-motion replay.
   228. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 04:58 PM (#5992637)
I was worried that tackling Copeland would take so long the half would run out.
   229. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:06 PM (#5992641)
That Toney TD was a clever play and I'm not sure I remember seeing a receiver motion quite like that before a play in the past.
   230. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:06 PM (#5992642)
Oh man, goal line offense is just all about having your guy go in motion faster than the defense adjusts? I didn't know it was that simple.
   231. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:08 PM (#5992643)
Here I was thinking that the Gators offense has seemed kinda sleepy and Trask is all like "B*tch I got 250 yards and 2 TDs already!" I'm spoiled, I guess.
   232. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:12 PM (#5992646)
Toney becoming the go-to possession receiver on third down is not something I would have predicted.
   233. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:21 PM (#5992650)
I didn't use to think so but I now feel like Toney's going to be a guy in the NFL, maybe not as a star but as a valuable 3rd-receiver/slot guy. His ability to run routes and actually get open has improved to a really remarkable degree, and pretty much every team can use a guy who does what he does.
   234. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:24 PM (#5992651)
My advertising comment for this week is that, as much personality as Patrick Mahomes shows on the field, he's kind of a terrible pitchman and that surprises me a little.
   235. Slivers of Maranville descends into chaos (SdeB) Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:26 PM (#5992652)
#234: You could say the same thing about Payton Manning at the start of his career, but he finally found his niche.
   236. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:32 PM (#5992653)
Good thing I wasn't late getting back to the game to start the half!
   237. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:33 PM (#5992654)
Trask could have had a TD pass to two different receivers on one pass.

Feels like the Gators have pulled off the first half/second half two-for-one move every game this year.
   238. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:35 PM (#5992655)
"Eh, I'm just going to throw it over in that direction, and I'm sure someone will catch it. Not sure who, but that's not my business."
   239. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:41 PM (#5992658)
Tennessee is obviously not good but I find it hard to make fun of Pruitt. I mean, I don't watch a lot of Tennessee games, but they're not doing anything particularly dumb in this game ... they're just a bad team. It's almost like they're kinda-sorta well-coached but just not at all talented. And obviously that's on the head coach in college football, but it's a far cry from the Butch Jones teams that seemed to be weird masochists that enjoyed losing games in stupid ways. Maybe this game is just a fluke and Tennessee is usually dumber? I don't know.
   240. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:43 PM (#5992660)
Me, halfway through the second quarter: Huh, Pitts has been shut out so far.

Me, with about 10 minutes to go in the third quarter: Huh, Pitts has four catches for 80 yards.
   241. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:46 PM (#5992662)
Trask had room to run for that first down and cut it outside for some reason.

Then a poor 4th-down pass that could have been a pick-six. Yikes.
   242. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 05:49 PM (#5992663)
Don't know if the UT player actually deflected that ball, or if he just distracted Davis by flashing in front of him right as the ball got there.
   243. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:28 PM (#5992666)
That drive had a real "OK, enough screwing around" vibe.

We say this every week, but Pitts is just remarkable.
   244. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:32 PM (#5992668)
So the Gators offense now is either producing three-and-outs, or they march down the field in 2 minutes or so. "Balanced offense" I guess.
   245. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:45 PM (#5992669)
Now THAT is how you recover an onside kick. Are you taking notes, Dan Quinn?
   246. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:47 PM (#5992670)
Aaron Murray: I still think you can't go into a game against Alabama thinking you're going to throw the ball 45 or 50 times.

CFBF: I certainly hope the game plan against Alabama is throwing the ball 45 or 50 times.
   247. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:52 PM (#5992671)
Spurrier had his game-winning FG as his Heisman moment, now Trask has his perfectly executed pooch punt.
   248. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:53 PM (#5992672)
I love it when teams score a prime number of points, and I love palindromic scores, so I'm REALLY glad UF got knocked out of field goal range there. And I hope this score holds.
   249. CFBF's Results are Certified Posted: December 05, 2020 at 06:59 PM (#5992673)
That's an impressively Rain Man post, Brian.
   250. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 07:01 PM (#5992674)
Wait which Brian are you talking to? You need to specify that in this thread.
   251. Brian C Posted: December 05, 2020 at 07:04 PM (#5992675)
With that missed PAT, we can save the palindromic score if the Gators can just score 60 within the last 30 seconds here.
   252. Brian White Posted: December 05, 2020 at 07:05 PM (#5992676)
Haha.

Okay, we've still got two prime number scores. And a win in Knoxville. I'll take it.

Blue endzones: leaning not a fan.

Also Trask looks gimpy heading back to the sideline after that TD.
   262. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 07:54 PM (#5993840)
Trask has been trying his damnedest to throw an INT this whole game and finally pulled it off.

Kind of a sad showing by the Gators so far today. Wake up, guys.
   263. Brian White Posted: December 12, 2020 at 08:02 PM (#5993843)
Well this game is going just grrrrrrrreat.
   264. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 08:19 PM (#5993844)
Man, how hard is it just to run a quick little slant route from the 6? The entire middle of the field was completely empty.
   265. Brian White Posted: December 12, 2020 at 08:21 PM (#5993845)
Yeah I realize running near the goal line is different than running draw plays from your own 25, but you'd think that a team that got to 100 yards rushing in about 20 minutes of game time could run a better set of goal line plays than that.
   266. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 08:24 PM (#5993846)
Marco Wilson is PUMPED UP after finally making a play this season.
   267. Brian White Posted: December 12, 2020 at 08:36 PM (#5993848)
Those weren't easy catches, but Dameon Pierce isn't having his best game catching the ball.
   268. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:30 PM (#5993859)
Game possibly on the line, down by 3, backed up to your own 1, fog too thick to see through, and what are the play calls? Three straight bombs downfield. Mullen's play-calling has been much-improved this year on the whole but that series ... I can't even. Three straight attempts at a 99-yard TD in that situation.
   269. Brian White Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:43 PM (#5993861)
Oh, Marco. That's the dumbest penalty possible.
   270. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:44 PM (#5993863)
So, I'm looking pretty good for dragging Marco Wilson right about now.
   271. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:45 PM (#5993864)
What's particularly aggravating about that is that LSU wasn't even trying to win the game with that offensive possession. After the first down incompletion, they got hyper-conservative and were happy to give the ball back. And then Marco does that ####.
   272. Brian White Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:49 PM (#5993865)
I feel like this is each team trying to top each other in terms of dumbest use of timeouts.
   273. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:52 PM (#5993866)
The UF timeout made perfect sense, though. Otherwise LSU kicks with no time left.
   274. Meatwad Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:52 PM (#5993867)
On the plus side. Florida losing just makes the SEC looks worse despite being a game with no meaning.

Eh, I think there was more benefit to LSU by that time out in terms of not having to rush everything.
   276. Brian C Posted: December 12, 2020 at 10:55 PM (#5993869)
Disagree. LSU has a good kicker and you have to give yourself some time instead of just assuming he misses.

Jesus. I did not have a "lose game on a missed McPherson FG" on my bingo card.

I blame CFBF - where was he when the Gators CFP hopes got murdered, anyway?

I feel like this is each team trying to top each other in terms of dumbest use of timeouts.

Navy trailed Army, 3-0, early in the third quarter when Navy had a 3rd and 14 near midfield.

Navy has struggled to score points this year, Army rarely gives up any, and the game is being played at West Point in the same all-day fog I noticed about 40 miles west. at this point, Navy is 0 for 3 on passes (and Army is 0 for 1).

Navy lines up and then...... calls a timeout.

you don't have to be a "nerd" to recognize that you have close to a zero chance of converting this down no matter what you do. so run the play and then punt, or take a delay of game, run a futile play, and then punt. the non-choosable 3rd option was "use a timeout."

for bonus points, it was Navy's second timeout taken in the half. then they ran a clever run for about 4 yards and of course punted.

still 3-0 with 12 minutes left when Navy fumbles at its own 13. Army scores to make it 10-0 and ballgame over - especially with Navy only having 1 timeout left.

if that decision-maker coach ever commands a Navy vessel and I am in his command - hell, I'll go AWOL and sneak into Canada and take my chances (wait, no-can-do in 2020. hmm.)

The USC drumbeat is actually starting, on the basis of the weakest 5-0 record imaginable.

Did he pull the receiver's shoe off and throw it; or did he find himself holding it and throw it? The latter would be quite a bit less unsportsmanlike than the former
   282. Howie Menckel Posted: December 13, 2020 at 03:10 PM (#5993923)
USC has trailed Arizona, Arizona State, and UCLA entering the final minute of play this season.

putting them into a 4-team national playoff likely would be quite entertaining - just not in the way that I think the selection committee would be intending their presence to be.

but I'd watch for sure.

Throwing the receiver's shoe while the receiver was still wearing it would've been even worse.

The latter. The receiver tried to jump over Marco Wilson and one other guy, and Wilson dragged him down by his legs. Guy's shoe just naturally came off in the process.

Also, Auburn blew over $21 million to fire Gus Malzahn, and might end up hiring ... Auburn's defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele. Never change, Auburn. Never change.
   286. Brian C Posted: December 15, 2020 at 10:19 PM (#5994418)
I feel the same way about Malzahn's $21 million buyout as I did Muschamp's buyout - why on earth would anyone put themselves in a position where they'd have to pay that kind of money for the right to fire this guy? Much more than high salaries per se, these exorbitant buyouts for mediocre coaches are convincing me that the money in college football is completely out of control.

It was ugly, but Oregon got it done. This was a strange season. Pac12 champs is nice, albeit fairly meaningless. It was good to get the kids some development.

Yeah, so the fascination with Iowa State entirely on the basis of "scoring margin since Halloween" seems to have been misguided.

There were two possible options for the SEC championship game: Florida loses a blowout, and Florida loses a close but tough shootout. 7-7 five minutes in indicates that just maybe we're headed for door number two.

Cincinnati with a long touchdown at the same time.
