Iowa has lost the last two weeks to unranked (at the time) teams by a total score of 51-14. It's kind of amazing that they're still ranked. Luckily, they'll get to fatten up on Northwestern this Saturday.

but they did beat penn state, who is currently...unranked. ...and they only won after penn state's QB was knocked out of the game with a 10 point lead in the first half.

so...yeah....

6 Cincinnati

So literally EVERYONE I have read regards this as a complete slap in the face, an insult of the highest order worthy of unmitigated outrage, but then I checked out the Massey Composite (basically an amalgamation of dozen of mostly computer rankings) and they are...5th. Is ranking them one spot lower REALLY justify all that ink? FWIW, here are the final CFP rankings and the contemporary Massey rankings for the highest G5 team each year:

2020 -- Cincinnati: 8 (CFP), 5 (Massey)
2019 -- Memphis: 17 (CFP), 15 (Massey)
2018 -- UCF 8: (CFP), 8 (Massey)
2017 -- UCF 12: (CFP), 9 (Massey)
2016 -- Western Michigan: 15 (CFP), 12 (Massey)
2015 -- Houston: 18 (CFP), 14 (Massey)
2014 -- Boise: 20 (CFP), 22 (Massey)

only suffered by penn state? nah.

but "ill-timed penalties" is not an appropriate description for the kinds of manifestly weird #### that officials continue to do to penn state.

here's an "interception" that was upheld after review in one of the biggest games of the year.
here's a linebacker getting ejected for trying to intercept a pass. also upheld after review (and later apologized for by the big ten because it was godawful call). fun fact about that one:

The Nittany Lions had already lost all their starting linebackers to injury when Smith, a backup and a walk-on, was ejected. Penn State was essentially forced to plug in fourth-stringer Jan Johnson, a former wrestler, who then suffered a season-ending injury [moments later].

and then there's everything that happened this year against auburn.

are certain officials purposely ####### penn state over as continued retribution for jerry sandusky's existence? yes.
are certain officials purposely ####### penn state over because james franklin is one of the most successful african-american coaches in NCAA history? also yes.

penn state's main campus has an annual enrollment of 46,000+ students.
centre county pennsylvania has a population of 150,000+ people.
there was 1 child molester.

now, yes, 1 is too many, but this isn't the catholic church we're talking about here; there weren't thousands of pedophile football coaches grooming tens of thousands of children to pass around amongst themselves after football games. it was one ####### piece of ####.

Not when the only team of significance they beat is Notre Dame, which hasn't been impressive this year. It also wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people whining about the Bearcats also complain that ND is overrated.
Let the AAC teams who want to compete play more P5 teams.

Let the AAC teams who want to compete play more P5 teams.
from the ringer:
Until this year, the committee cited a lack of quality wins when explaining why it didn’t rank non-power teams higher. Those undefeated UCF teams never played a team ranked higher than 20th in the final playoff rankings; last year, Cincinnati’s best opponent was no. 24 Tulsa. But this year, Cincinnati has a win over no. 10 Notre Dame—a favorite of the playoff committee, which has won all its other games. Somehow, it’s not enough.
...
The committee questioned Cincinnati’s schedule strength, but its logic doesn’t check out: no. 3 Michigan State has only one win against a team with a winning record this season, but the committee ranked the Spartans three spots ahead of Cincinnati without a condescending remark about the rest of their schedule. ...for the record, Cincinnati’s third-best win is a 14-point victory over Indiana, which Michigan State beat by five.
but this is where the committee goes too far in rigging the game, imo:
Cincinnati is the only AAC team in the rankings; the AP and Coaches’ polls each include Houston and SMU, both of whom are 7-1. ...In a truly hilarious twist, Oregon gets a quality win because of the committee’s decision to rank Fresno State, which has a worse record than Houston and SMU and is unranked in the Coaches’ poll.

...and finally:
You can draw a direct line from the committee’s snubs of Cincinnati and UCF to the death throes of Conference USA. When Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston left the American Athletic Conference, the AAC reloaded by snagging six schools from C-USA. Three more C-USA schools left the league for the Sun Belt, and two are rumored to leave for the MAC. That leaves the conference with just three members.
...
C-USA will die soon; the College Football Playoff committee killed it.
I’ve spent the whole playoff era rooting for someone from a smaller league to get a shot at a championship. The committee didn’t just prevent this from happening; it helped build a system in which it can’t happen. The powers that be wanted a college football world with no Cinderellas, and they spoke it into existence.

How do you propose they go about making this happen? Would be nice if you provided an answer that demonstrates basic familiarity with how college football scheduling actually works.
   14. bunyon Posted: November 03, 2021 at 08:29 PM (#6051119)
Exactly. If you want to use SoS as a criterion, you have to have centralized, fair scheduling. Or just make the playoffs the top four SEC teams and be done with it.

Cincinnati struggled against two awful teams in Navy and Tulane the past two weeks. Yeah, they won, but c'mon. You can't be outgained by the Midshipmen and expect to waltz into the playoffs. Teams like Cincy will get in when the playoffs expand.

Cincinnati is not one of the best 4 teams in the country, and doesn't have one of the best 4 sets of results either. So (if you can be unbiased in how you view the conferences), it really comes down to how much you value a team not losing against the schedule in front of them. Historically and especially before the selection committee or whatever the name is these days, going undefeated was by far the most important consideration. That has changed quite a bit due to the selection process. You could argue, as the quote does above, that the main reason for the change to benefit the top conferences, but you could equally argue that the main reason is to pick higher quality teams that have actually beaten better opponents. There's also the factor that there is more attention paid to sophisticated ranking systems now then there were 20-50 years ago, and these systems seldom favor teams that don't play very strong schedules.

Ohio State getting monumentally lucky here late, between the missed chip shot, the uncalled pass interference and that strip-sack just dribbling along the ground unclaimed seemingly forever.

North Carolina's defense has really stepped up in the fourth quarter. Interception-downs-downs, while coming back from 18 down late in the third. And then a 50-yard touchdown run with a minute left to clinch it.

Game no one wants to win:

Cincinnati stops Tulsa on 4th down 2 yards short of a potential game-tying TD. So they take over deep in their own end, but with only a little over a minute left. Can't quite kneel it because they're backed up to their own goal line, but still. So what happens? They fumble the snap and Tulsa recovers on the Cincy 3.

Tulsa fails on 1st and 2nd down, then their QB has a chance to run it in on 3rd down ... and inexplicably slides down short of the goal line. Ball on the 1 and 4th down.

On 4th down, the Tulsa back fumbles reaching across the goal line. Cincy touchback.

Uh-oh, Arkansas converts a 2-point conversion to go up 3, bringing the dreaded tie into play just minutes from the Florida-South Carolina kickoff on the same channel.

Although, remind me why I even want to watch the Florida game again?
   36. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 06, 2021 at 07:31 PM (#6051639)
An impressively terrible display of defense by Arkansas allows Miss. State to drive 60 or so yards down the field in about 15 seconds, setting up a game-tying field goal attempt.

I have nothing to back this up and no inside information, but I've sort of suspected that the only way Mullen actually loses his job this year is if he loses two more games. Falling to South Carolina and Florida State might just be enough to do it.

So, throwing the ball = big gain. Running the ball = big loss.
   51. Brian C Posted: November 06, 2021 at 08:17 PM (#6051664)

No matter how long this continues to be the case, these announcers will get all butt-sweaty over the Gators not running it enough.
   52. Brian C Posted: November 06, 2021 at 08:33 PM (#6051668)
Two things I don't feel good about:

1) The defense continuing to hold SC to field goals if they keep giving up yardage like this, and
2) The Gators winning a battle of kickers if it comes to that

Otherwise, I think what happened on that long 3rd down conversion is that Grantham sent the LB on a delayed blitz, and SC countered by throwing the ball to the TE who had no one anywhere near him in the middle of the field since the LB had blitzed. Because as always, Grantham's only tactic is sending random guys on blitzes.

In the Northwestern-Iowa game, Iowa kicked off, a Northwestern guy in the wedge 25 yards away from the ball waved his guys over to one side of the field, and the refs decided that was a fair catch signal. The refs gave NU the ball at the 3 where the receiver, who hadn't made any signal at all, caught the ball. Unbelievable. Even if you fair-catch a kickoff, you get the ball at the 25.

I perfectly well agree on going for it on 4th down there while losing by 23 in the second half, except that I get the feeling that Mullen basically did it simply out of pique.

i'm watching real sporting events right now; i'm not desperate enough to watch these children who aren't even getting paid.

I don't think I remember a more embarrassing show from a Gator football team, and it's not like I don't have plenty to choose from over the last 20 years. There's just no way that anyone can defend this crap.

2014 Missouri?

I feel like Matt Stinchcomb's ideal football game is two teams running the ball into the line on every play, punting every fourth down, going into halftime any time there's less than five minutes on the clock and shaking hands after a hard-fought 0-0 tie.

2014 Missouri?

I thought about that one! They were down at one point 42-0 despite allowing less than 100 total yards, which has to be some kind of record. Plus it was homecoming.

But no, this one's worse. At least Missouri won the SEC East that year. This South Carolina team is total dogshit and this is still happening.

Georgia Southern, 2013, and the offensive linemen blocking each other.

LSU blasts Young and he fumbles the ball at the Alabama 42. 3:25 left.

I thought about the Georgia Southern one too, but I was almost too deadened by that team to feel any embarrassment - in a way, losing by 17 to Vandy a couple weeks earlier was worse and probably a better analogue to this game. I mean, that was a good Vandy team! But still.

Yeah, though, Georgia Southern was bad. Big mistake to keep Muschamp after that game. Just set them back when they inevitably had to fire him the next year anyway.

Alabama basically going Full Grantham, which works when you're facing a panicked quarterback who blindly flings the ball when he's got a man open.
   83. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 06, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6051720)
Game was very winnable for LSU if Johnson had anything resembling pocket presence or awareness. Took a sack on the first play after getting the ball back with a minute left, ensuring the best that could be accomplished was a heave from the 30 on the final play, which would've been overturned even if successful by a lineman grabbing a facemask.

Clemson with a stop on the goal line to preserve a 30-24 lead in the final seconds.

Oregon was up 24-16 and had the ball at the Washington nine, moved back with consecutive 15-yard penalties and punted. Washington then faced 4th-and-10 with 1:59 and decided to punt -- with two timeouts left, your upside is getting the ball back with under a minute left pinned deep; this is indefensible -- but the snap was airmailed through the end zone for a safety.

Lake slapped a player of his on the helmet. If you're old like me, you go Grandpa Simpson on what happened, but, yeah, it's probably over the line.

bonus points in the Oregon game for this:

up 24-16 with 3 minutes left and with the Ducks still dreaming of a national title, Oregon run is down to the 1-yard line so - ballgame? wait, there is a 'rasslin' unsportsmanlike conduct by an OL away from the play. but the announcer - believe it was RG II - says Oregon coach won't mind that one because.... the OL is passionate, or something.

costs Oregon about 25 yards so - hmmm.
after the next play, more rasslin and a WR for Oregon gets a penalty so now it's 1st and 33 and out of FG range. even the announcer admits, ok, maybe he didn't like the second one.

announcer busy telling a Bruce Lee story as the game hangs in the balance.

then the breathtaking decision by the Wash coach to punt on 4th and 10 from the 10 after 3 dropped passes (in the rain; spoiler alert, that punt snap won't be a gimme).
now, the Wash offense only accounted for 7 points all day, so yeah, they're not gonna make it.

but Oregon had just run off 9 minutes and gotten their rushing total up around 300 - Wash D wasn't stopping them even in a prevent offense. so at least go down swinging, Huskies.

Seems like a sure sign that Mullen will be retained for next year after all, barring further disaster. At this point, I think that's an indefensible decision, but of course a strong defense hasn't been a very high priority for Gator football the past few years anyway.

At any rate, I really think that Stricklin needs to speak up one way or the other. He's just watching this program bleed right now and for no good reason. This last week is on him, too, for letting the coaches twist in the wind like he's been doing. It's a real weasel move for him to keep silent like he has.

In short, I am not mollified by just firing Grantham and I doubt many other people will be either. I guess Hevesy was fired too, but unlike Grantham who was genuinely terrible, I think Hevesy is essentially being used as a scapegoat.

would you be happy to replace him with bobby petrino?

the way i see it, there are two reasons why you fire a college coach:

1: your coach is a shitheel, and hiring literally anyone else would be an improvement.
2: you want to win more games, and you're willing to sell some part of your soul to do it. not necessarily an art briles sized chunk of your soul, but a reasonably part of it.

if neither of those things apply, you should probably just stand pat and be happy that your program isn't being run by someone who views aiding and abetting semi-random serial killers as an essential part of their job.

It seems notable that recruits and even some current players have responded on social media to the Hevesy and Grantham firings with outright joy. That's...not normal.
   92. Brian C Posted: November 08, 2021 at 03:09 PM (#6051914)
Yeah, real "coverup is worse than the crime" energy here, given that the firings seem to have exposed some deeper (though not surprising) issues in the program despite plainly being designed to save face. Anyway, despite being fundamentally opposed to scheduling FCS schools, I'm glad in a way that they have Samford on the schedule this week, so I can skip the game and not feel compelled to watch this shitshow again for another week.

You forgot:

3: your coach is involved in a shameful child molestation scandal, thereby rendering opinions of their fans about other programs worthless for all time

Who is #1?

You are, #6.

The worst thing about going to Happy Valley is you can pretty much count on a couple of awful PI calls, since the refs are so intimidated by Franklin.

No, Roddy Jones, we should not watch this game because these two quarterbacks might be future saviors of quarterback-hungry NFL teams. We should watch it on its merits as a potentially ludicrous 63-59 college football game.

Harbaugh calls timeout as Penn State lines up to punt, after which Penn State runs a successful fake, anyway.
