asa hutchenson is going to be a hell of an NFL player next year.

great tackle on that balded middle aged man, #40.

if there's one thing i know about trick plays, it's that they work best when the opposing team is alert to stopping them.

This UF-Samford broadcast really makes you appreciate the quality of coverage you used to get on Jefferson Pilot Sports.

The first one should've been stopped, too, but the guy in coverage stopped and looked back while the ball was in the air.

That's not a touchback. He had possession outside the end zone, which kills the play.

Uh, Samford is beating Florida 21-14 after scoring three touchdowns in three first quarter drives. Some disgracefully bad defense and tackling from the post-Grantham Gators.

it's a touchback in the NFL, which is the only thing ESPN (and most people who have actually graduated college) cares about.

Everyone knows sending eight rushers is the way to stop Samford's offense, so this was the wrong week to make that move.

Penn State's fakes brought to mind the time LSU lost a heartbreaker to Alabama, with one of the culprits being that Miles went Full Hatter and faked a field goal even though Saban left his defense on the field, and when I did a search to refresh myself on the half-remembered details -- even throwing things like "Mettenberger" in -- I kept getting references to last week's fake punt.

Get your #### together, Google.

ESPN+ announcer suggested Samford, currently beating UF 35-28 and driving again, needs to "slow it down" because they're "scoring too quick."

September: Dan Mullen is safely entrenched at Florida.

Last week: Dan Mullen might not last the season.

Fifteen minutes ago: Dan Mullen might not last this week.

Now: Dan Mullen is getting fired at halftime.

From the 2015 thread, in solidarity with the Florida Mafia:
I repeat my call for Dan Mullen's head. That guy quit playing to win after going for 4th-and-goal from the one early in the first quarter. It's been "Kick a 50-yard field goal with a kicker who lacks the leg to get it there" and "Run into the line on 3rd-and-13" and "Punt to try keeping the score respectable" ever since.

This, from a game in which Mississippi State outgained Alabama but managed to get blown out.
   117. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 01:55 PM (#6052828)
With Clemson having 30 points at the half, I checked the box score expecting to see an efficient mauling and instead found Uiagalelei is 17-of-37 for 217 yards, with an interception for good measure.

Penn State has a really good team undermined by an absolutely horrific OL. I know they’ve had injuries but this is the worst line Michigan has seen this year, and that includes non conference.

Clifford keeps taking brutal shots and it’s like, no kidding he’s injured. My god.

Shame because they’re a darn good team as is and if they had even average line play they’d be playoff caliber.

McNamara is what he is and one of the things he isn’t is a guy with enough arm strength to throw to the sidelines in a November wind.

Bohanon scrambles for a touchdown from the five, set up by a 75-yard Abram Smith run, to put Baylor up 17-7 in the fourth.

Rattler came on late in the third for Williams, who has been atrocious.

Samford, having fallen behind by 14, cuts the lead to seven, then recovers an onsides kick with about 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Credit to the Bulldogs for going for this thing.

you're not wrong, but i'll add that the DL has significant issues vs. the run, too. they're just not big enough on either front.
Shame because they’re a darn good team as is and if they had even average line play they’d be playoff caliber.
nah; clifford isn't that caliber of QB and the offensive play calling itself isn't good enough. plus, again, they can't stop the run.

even with a better offensive line, they'd still have found 2-3 losses somewhere along the way, finished in the top 7-12, and they'd probably get into a major bowl game instead of some crypto-scam sponsored toilet bowl.

Gators score 70 points, which makes me feel good about things, as that is the only information I have about today's game and there is no additional context or other data points for me to be aware of.

Roller coaster game in Tallahassee.

Florida State goes up 17-0 and misses a field goal, then gets outscored 28-3 over the next 25 minutes. Kicks a field goal facing 4th-and-3 at Miami's 11 to get within 28-23 inside five minutes, then forces a punt to get the ball back with two minutes left.

59-yard pass to the 21, but a stuffed run, two incompletions and a false start lead to 4th-and-14 with under a minute. Completion over the middle taken inside the one, and the third attempt at a Bush Push is successful, with the two-point conversion making it 31-28.

Miami completes a pass near midfield with two seconds left and spikes the ball, not knowing the prohibition on killing the clock inside three seconds. Game over.

time to play "who does NOT get a bowl bid, from SEC or Big Ten?"

SEC
OUT
Vanderbilt 2-7

LSU 4-5 has to beat 2 of Arkansas (now, no), ULM (yes), and Texas A&M (no)
Mizzou 5-5 has to beat Florida (hmm) or Arkansas (no)
Florida 5-5 has to beat Mizzou (hmm) or Florida St (no?)
South Carolina 5-5 has to beat Auburn (no) or Clemson (no?)
(so likely only 10 out of 14 this year)

BIG TEN
OUT
Indiana 2-8
Nebraska 3-7
Northwestern 3-7

Maryland 5-5 has to beat Michigan (no) or Rutgers (plausible)
Rutgers 5-5 has to beat Penn State (no) or Maryland (plausible)
Illinois 4-6 has to win at Iowa (not likely) and beat Northwestern (ok)
(so likely only 9 out of 14 this year)

Mizzou-Florida next week and Maryland-Rutgers the week after look like "play-in bowl games"

winner of Maryland-Rutgers may be headed for the Quik Lane Bowl in Detroit on Dec. 27 - so is the loser the winner, or is the winner the loser?

Mississippi outgained A&M 408-91 in the first half. 15-0 flatters the Aggies in the extreme.

And because it wasn't 35-0 like it could've been, A&M has two good drives bookending a drop-aided defensive stop, and it's suddenly a game.

42-35 in the third quarter
   147. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 10:35 PM (#6052886)
Mississippi's defense does what its offense couldn't. Consecutive interceptions -- one setting up the offense on the doorstep and the other returned for a touchdown -- turn a 15-13 lead into 29-13.
   148. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:01 PM (#6052887)
Clinging to a 49-42 lead, KU is stopped one yard short on 3rd down deep in its own territory. The Jayhawks try the ol' "line up and draw them offsides" move, and it fails, with Lance Leipold using KU's last timeout to avoid a delay of game. They then, to Brian Griese's absolute horror, send out the offense and try a quick sneak, which also fails.
   149. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:04 PM (#6052888)
First possession of overtime, and LSU picks up 3rd-and-20, only to promptly get a fade intercepted in the end zone.
   150. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:05 PM (#6052889)
And Casey Thompson throws an interception in the end zone with about 1:10 left, though Texas still has all three timeouts.
   151. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6052890)
Arkansas has 3rd-and-4 on the left hash and turtles to the center of the field for a 38-yard kick. The fates do not punish this with a miss, much to my dismay.
   152. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:13 PM (#6052891)
KU with a lightning quick three-and-out, and Texas scores the game-tying touchdown on their ensuring drive. Boo.
   153. Mike A Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:15 PM (#6052892)
Kansas didn't even try to get a first down, which was pretty weak. They gave the ball back to Texas with plenty of time left.

If your defense has given up 500+ yards, you might not want to rely on them.
   154. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:22 PM (#6052893)
The lesson: Never run the ball with the goal of merely burning the opposition's timeouts. Run when taking 45 seconds off the clock is hugely advantageous. Otherwise, get the damn first down.
   155. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6052894)
"...shown us that caution is out the window."

   156. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:29 PM (#6052895)
UT and KU trade touchdowns on the first possession of OT, and it looks like KU is going for the win with a two-point conversation.
   157. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:31 PM (#6052896)
And KU wins thanks to a reception by a very rotund blocking tight end/fullback.
   158. Mike A Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:33 PM (#6052897)
Heh, I didn't think there was any chance for Kansas to convert that 2-pointer once the QB got flushed from the pocket. And that offensive lineman came soooo close to holding. What a crazy game.

Okay, this made me lookup UGA's ill-fated fake punt in the 2018 SEC championship (28-all, UGA had a 4th and 11 at midfield with about 3:00 left). I didn't remember this, but the guy that ran the fake was Justin Fields.

UW fires Jimmy Lake.
DFCTR:

Lake was not present for this past Saturday’s 35-30 collapse against Arizona State, because he was suspended for punching his own player
...
The notably pungent combination of Lake’s poor record, short tenure, and suspension illustrates how he was a bad coach whose dismissal went beyond his team’s on-field performance. UW Athletic Director Jen Cohen made this explicit when she ended her department’s statement on Lake’s firing Sunday by noting “this change is necessary for a variety of reasons, both on the field and off.” Cohen ... may have been referring to the Huskies’ Nov. 6 loss to Oregon, when Lake punched and shoved linebacker Ruperake Fuavai on the sideline, earning him a suspension for the game against ASU. The Seattle Times reported a week later on an October 2019 incident where, according to five witnesses, Lake slammed a player into a locker at halftime.
...
Lake replaced his OC with former Penn State coordinator John Donovan, whose pro-style offense and seven years away from college football reportedly raised a few eyebrows

Up 21-3 at the half, Tune throws an interception while driving early in the third. Memphis then scores 10 points in two drives, thanks in large part to Houston committing eight penalties for 72 yards. Then from the Memphis four, Houston commits a delay before first down, has an uncontested drop in the end zone on second down, and Tune throws the ball into a sea of humanity and gets picked off again on third down.

Sparty does not seem up to covering Ohio State's receivers.
   174. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 20, 2021 at 12:37 PM (#6053706)
Uiagalelei just shrugged off two sacks, then made an off-balance 50-yard heave to a receiver who'd snuck behind the defense. Clemson's got 10 points in two possessions. Could the Clemson offense be back? Or is the Wake Forest defense just...that...bad?
   175. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 20, 2021 at 12:51 PM (#6053707)
Clemson driving again, but fumbles in Wake territory in the midst of what would've been about a 20-yard run.

Meanwhile, the Clemson defense is swallowing Wake's offense alive. Four sacks already.

MSU is getting boat raced today.

Michigan State legitimately looks like they don't belong on the same field as the Buckeyes.

didn't expect tOSU to be keeping up with Georgia today, but there it is 42-0 each.
   180. Mike A Posted: November 20, 2021 at 01:49 PM (#6053717)
tOSU with 500 yards at the half. That's insane.

WTF is going on with Michigan State? Naturally I wouldn't have expected them to beat an Ohio State today, but Stroud is 29-31 for 393 yards in the first half. That's not just wetting the bed - that's sleeping in the top bunk, soaking through your own mattress, and still having enough left over to drown the person below you in piss.

This would be an embarrassing effort for even the lowliest of FCS teams.

Disastrous end of the half for the Cyclones. Driving in Oklahoma territory, they run a throwback off a jet sweep, but an illegal forward pass because the first exchange was a touch pass instead of a handoff pushes them way back. On 3rd-and-21 from the OU 40 in the final 20 seconds, Purdy is scrambling, pumps, doesn't get the ball tucked, and a helmet on the ball jettisons it 15 yards backwards, and Oklahoma picks it up and runs it in.

Speaking of embarrassing - playing a football game at Wrigley is a dumb idea. No one has more love than me for Wrigley in general, or respect for Wrigley's past as the Bears' home in particular, but ... it's not a football stadium.

And so to open the second half, the Purdue kicker slips during the kickoff on the bad turf, causing an inadvertent onside kick that Purdue lucks out and recovers. Fun play, and today isn't as dumb as the last time they tried this at Wrigley but could only use one half of the field. But what are they even doing there in the first place.

Purdue kicker just slipped on another kickoff. This one ended up being more of a squib and was recovered by NU.

They've been doing it for years, for whatever reason. I have a picture of my dad at what must be a Northwestern-Notre Dame game from 68 or 69. It's the only time he's been to Wrigley, weirdly, though he lived in Chicago for a while and is much more a baseball fan than a football fan.

Florida State went up 26-3 on Boston College in the third quarter, after which BC has scored three consecutive touchdowns (one missed two-point attempt) and is now inside FSU's 40 with 2:30 left.

Harvard-Yale going down to the wire.

Trailing 28-21 in the last 30 seconds, Iowa State had a fourth down from the 21, Oklahoma left the tight end completely uncovered over the middle of the field, and Purdy airmailed him for a game-ending interception.

The Crimson take the lead with a really nice touchdown pass and catch with 22 seconds left.

Nice to see something positive happen for Harvard for once.

Cincinnati with a 53-yard touchdown pass two minutes in.

SMU nine-and-out its first three possessions and now gets a punt deflected. Cincinnati with the ball at the 25 and a chance to take the game by the throat.

Let's see if the Gators' defense has regrouped enough to prevent Mizzou marching down the field for an easy opening TD.
   193. Brian C Posted: November 20, 2021 at 04:18 PM (#6053746)
Mixed results on that opening drive by Mizzou:

1. Forced a punt, so that's good.
2. Allowed a 3rd-and-long conversion, so an early red flag.
3. At the same time, the coverage on that conversion was pretty good and Mizzou just made a play. It happens.
4. Mizzou coaches apparently spent zero time watching film on the Gators, and spent both 1st downs and both 2nd downs with drive-wasting putzing-around playcalls. So they did a favor by not challenging the Gators either straight up the middle on the ground or throwing deep until they were backed up.

So, inconclusive IMO.

A 12-yard punt for Crawshaw.

EDIT: And a pretty redoubtable defensive stand in response.

As Ridder keeps on a zone read for a 40-yard touchdown to go up 20-0, I begin to consider the possibility that Cincinnati has just been sleepwalking for the past month.

Ah, ye old 3rd-and-10 handoff in opponents' territory. Maybe Mullen wants to get fired.

I don't know that I would have drawn up a fake handoff to Trent Whittemore, followed by a back-pedaling pass to Kemore Gamble, on fourth and two, but hey, whatever works.

Arkansas looked overwhelmed early but scores to get back within 10-7.

And then immediately gives up a 79-yard touchdown pass.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati continues to lay it on SMU. Four touchdowns in five possessions, while the Mustangs have gone three-and-out on four of their five.
