Yeah, I think you had Mullen pretty fairly pegged. "Awful news" was an overbid on my part, I think - there's no question that he leaves the program in pretty terrible shape after year 4, with a mediocre roster and practically nonexistent recruiting class. Napier will essentially be starting from scratch, which remind me about if things are a little rocky next year, please.

Still and all, he didn't do any worse than either of the Gators' top 2 choices would have, I don't think. And a good part of 2020 was legitimately the most fun I've had watching Gator football in over a decade. So it wasn't all bad, like it was for the Muschamp era (not wanting to hear about 2012 please and thanks), and it had more promise than the McElwain era did despite Mac's 2 SEC East titles. I think in time I'll look back on the Mullen years with semi-indifferent ambivalence instead of thinking about it as a total failure.

Although probably dude will spectacularly arson his bridges in the next few months and everyone will hate him forever. Let's face it, the guy isn't known for his graciousness and humility.

Also Tennessee people are all freaking out tonight about Heupel possibly leaving for OU. Which I would normally think was hilarious but for some reason actually seems kind of sad. Have things really got to the point where I feel Vols fans have suffered enough?

I'm not going to scroll back for it, but I riled Brian C (I think) with comments about Florida being like Texas. I wasn't trying to piss you off and both schools have great tradition and could be a power again. My post was responding to the dismissal of dozens of coaches because they weren't "Florida" enough. I think that point of view is BS. Big time CFB coaching is about: Recruiting, hiring a staff, and handling media. If the expectations are such at a school that the expectations are too high for the time frame, no one will succeed. Schools get in their heads when they think a hire will be some sort of magic that they can get back to the glory days quickly and easily.

Hire the best coach you can, spend money and be patient. Florida has done one of those now. Now they need the other two. If they do it, yeah, they'll be a power. If they don't, they won't. There is nothing magical about the name "Florida" or "Texas" or "Nebraska" or "Alabama" that means you need a different type of coach or somehow makes the job different. It's more intense, sure, but it's still the same basic job. Texas and Nebraska both spent years outsmarting themselves that they were unique and got themselves in a world of trouble. It can happen to anyone and ruling out good coaches because they don't have some "it" is a good way to bring it about.

FWIW, I think Napier is a good hire. But a lot depends on who he hires and how the program around him reacts to him. Not much way for anyone to know that.

My OU friends are bereft. It's a very, very weird feeling to have beaten them on the field and have the press be so overtly good for OSU and bad for OU. Can't last long. I assume we'll get blow out by Baylor and Bob Stoops will come out of retirement for assistant professor pay or something.

1000% this. And this applies at every level. There's a lot of variance in CFB - both ball bouncing in your favor variance, but also the inherent variance in how many hits you have out of the 17 year olds you recruited - and even good programs don't turn it around at once. Find someone who is a good fit culturally, back him up with resources, and don't pull the plug too early. Let the guy build recruiting relationships and develop a staff. Obviously if you've got a tire fire you've got to pull the plug, but Texas made a horrific mistake shitcanning Hermann. Even UGA sort of stumbled into giving Smart enough time to build a juggernaut b/c they lucked into the CFP in year two which bought him a couple of years of being merely "very good" before he put together his monster.

There's a lot of variance in CFB

That goes both ways. If I'm trying to determine whether Brady Hoke is a better candidate than Urban Meyer... uh, OK, that's an over-reach... let's just say you're going to have a hard time teasing out whether the latest coach at Iowa State or Louisville is really that good or if he just got lucky with his current DC or his current QB, or for that matter it's tough to determine whether success at that second tier of schools can translate to a higher level.

That doesn't get to the revenue model of college football depending on kissing-up to donors, and whatever weird peccadilloes they might have. Or the likelihood that your coach will pick up his bags and take $100 million to go to USC or maybe the NFL. I mean, yes, again, the Hoke hire is more likely to be a mistake than the alternatives, but I can understand why AD's work with those biases.

For those upset that Lincoln Riley is moving to SC, be comforted that he will pay $58,227.85 in income taxes plus 12.3% of the amount over $599,012 for the privilege of living in California. That’s compared to $255 plus 5% over $12,201 in Norman. #LincolnRiley #BoomerSooner

Tom, ND plays navy every year for a good reason.

I have to say that this seems untoward by Brian Kelly. Notre Dame has a reasonable chance of being in the playoff. To do this now is pretty bad.
   413. nick swisher hygiene Posted: November 29, 2021 at 10:53 PM (#6055276)
How the #### does anybody steal a coach from Notre Dame? Notre Dame has the largest endowment of any football-obsessed school in the country. More than ten times LSU’s. And they’ve been on TV playing football for literally my entire life. How could they not match an offer? Why would you leave this sweet gig and go to a public school that will fire you two years away from a national championship?
   414. Brian C Posted: November 29, 2021 at 11:40 PM (#6055286)
Kelly is a perfectly respectable football coach and he probably establishes a decently high floor at LSU over the next few years. But all in all, I think that this is like all the Ferraris being sold out so you walk into a Hyundai dealership bragging about how much money you're going to spend anyway - you can get a perfectly good car, but nothing that's going to make your friends super jealous.

An imprudent amount of money that Notre Dame decided not to match would be my guess. LSU is a state school, won’t they have to disclose the salary eventually? Or is there a football coach exception to the public records law?
   416. Meatwad Posted: November 30, 2021 at 01:59 AM (#6055291)
I don't think something like this has ever happened where 2 established coaches leave major programs for other major programs.

I'm not telling you anything you haven't heard before, but as someone who's interacted with Brian Kelly directly, he is an unbelievable #######. Even compared to other football coaches. Great coach, but hiring him is like making a deal with the devil, which is why I always sort of inside-chuckled that he was the head coach at Notre Dame.

I can't imagine paying him what LSU is paying him, especially since there's a lot more donor ass-kissing required at the big state schools with independent ADs. Kelly is a remarkably offensive personality, like within 5 minutes of meeting him offensive.

All the selection committee (are they still called that) seems to do is:

1) decide how many "penalty" losses to give non-power 5s (Cincy has 1 penalty loss, SDSU has 2)
2) sort teams by how many losses they have, applying the non-power 5 penalty.
3) order within each loss group by something like FPI's "strength of record"
4) rank Arkansas over Kentucky.

Done.

Based on this logic, Georgia loses and they are still in (with Cincy probably in but maybe OK St taking their spot). Anyone else loses and they are out, with OK state stepping in. If 2 1-loss teams lose (including OK St), than ND steps in (assuming they count as a power-5). 3 or more 1-loss teams lose, then we have to rank them again within then 2-loss group. Fun!

A Rose Bowl against Ohio State could be really great.

In case you ever wanted to know what watching UNM Lobos football was like this year, this Oregon performance tonight is perfect analogy, except v. teams like Colorado State and a terrible UNLV. Passing is like, important, these days.

Seeing what Utah has become, I am stunned it's the same team I watched at the beginning of the season.

At the same time, the Ducks looked ... unprepared. I know Utah's been on a roll, and I know some teams are just bad matchups, but it reflects really poorly on the Oregon coaching staff that they were utterly noncompetitive against this team twice in three weeks. It seemed like their gameplan heading in was essentially, "Don't worry, we'll probably do better this time."

I don't think it's any disrespect against Utah to say that it just seems like the Ducks should have put up something of a fight, at least.

I thought it was probably a lateral, but hard to overturn on video.

I was reacting to the live play. On replay, the ball in hand appeared to be very slightly -- like two inches -- ahead of where it landed, but some part of that is an artifact of the camera being behind the play. So basically impossible to say.

Damn, how did he not make it into the end zone there? Keep that highlight for when people say that running backs don't matter - one yard to go, one guy to beat, all the open field in the world ... didn't make it. Plus he dove short instead of actually trying to get in. Just terrible RB play.

Well. Baylor now is technically alive for a playoff spot. They need Alabama to get blown own out and Cincy to lose. Maybe Michigan too. Any chance Baylor gets it over 2-loss Alabama in a reasonably close one, or over ND? Either seems unlikely to me.

Houston busted on Pierce to open the half but he had to dive to catch a Ridder overthrow, costing Cincinnati a walk-in touchdown. Bearcats then went for 4th-and-3 -- now 0/4 on third downs -- and converted when Houston committed interference inside the 10. Touchdown on the next play.

Followed by an interception on Houston's first play to set up Cincinnati at the 23, and back-shoulder fade to Pierce two plays later makes it 28-13.

Cincy game is over now, after the third straight TD. With Georgia really solidifying its spot after OK State's loss, that just leaves two spots. Alabama will be hard to keep out now even if they end up losing a close one. So really it's probably Michigan in if they win or ND if Michigan loses.

Winner of this game gets Cincy, loser gets Michigan? Or, if Michigan loses, winner gets ND and loser gets Cincy? That's my guess. This game is no longer about making the playoff.

How is it a big gamble to pass up a field goal that basically helps you in no way? Put Danielson on an ice floe.

Of all the scenarios I could have envisioned for this game, Alabama scoring 31 would never have occurred to me.

Houston with life after a long touchdown drive following a fumble returned by Cincinnati for a touchdown was questionably overturned to an incomplete pass. 51-yard wide receiver screen on 3rd-and-14 featuring like six missed tackles short of the sticks and multiple personal fouls on Cincinnati along the way.

I wasn't expecting that the Cincy/Houston game would suddenly become more of a contest than the Georgia/Alabama game.

edit: and I guess we probably won't know now, but I think Alabama basically had a spot in the playoff wrapped up based on their first half performance and OK State's loss. I think there's little question that they are much better than the other teams that might claim a spot. It's only whether the committee could justify their record. Losing a close one to Georgia while completely outplaying them in the first half would very likely have been enough.

How bad does UGA have to lose before they drop out of the top 4? I don't think too many people gamed out the "UGA looks awful and gets blown out" scenario. Presumably OK State's loss makes this less likely than it might otherwise have been, but it's a little bit of a shame when getting embarrassed in your championship game is just no big deal.

It probably would've taken 59-0 to fall out of the top four. But falling to fourth?

Though I doubt the committee has the balls.

Did they not do SEC Legends this year? Seeing guys honored for their play in the Southwest Conference in the '70s is one of my favorite annual traditions.

Between Kyle Pitts last year and Bowers today, Bama has gotten absolutely shredded by tight ends in the SEC Championship Game.

Cincinnati gets its eighth sack to turn Houston over on downs and effectively end it.

so after that punt I’ll be hoping Georgia gets knocked off in the semis and doesn’t get another shot

Louisiana leading App State 24-16 with 33 seconds left, ULL has the ball on the App St 36 and it's 4th and 6. Napier elects to go for it instead of punting it, and the announcers go apeshit. They just don't understand how Napier could elect to go for it instead of punting the ball away. And I'm here thinking, how is there any question? You have the chance to end the game, you try to end the game. Why take the chance drawing it out for the sake of what is ultimately marginal yardage gained anyway?

Anyway the pass was incomplete, and the ULL defense gets one strip-sack overturned on replay before getting a successful strip-sack on the following play. So it worked out either way.

Looking forward to the upcoming Napier regime. This game was not especially pretty, but they got it done against a solid App State team.

Is Sark running a literal circus down there?

Time for Napier to hop on a plane and do some 'crootin. Nap in the air.

where will the Bama-Cincy game be played?

Cotton, probably.

Unless Michigan blows out Iowa by something ridiculous, I think this gets Alabama the number 1 ranking. Michigan will probably be 2 with a win, Georgia 3 and Cincy 4. I could even see Georgia staying at 2.

If Michigan does end up getting 1 for whatever reason, they'll probably drop Georgia to 4 so they don't have a rematch with Alabama.

The US didn't beat the Soviets in the semifinals. It was a round robin.

KENNY PICKETT!

58-yard touchdown run, the last 35 of which came when he froze Wake's defense by pretending he was going to slide.

495, if the reference is 1980 Olympics, it was the semis. I can't see what the precursor was.

College football is a simple game. Young men throw, run, and kick the ball and Alabama wins in the end.

495, if the reference is 1980 Olympics, it was the semis. I can't see what the precursor was.

There were two pools, with the top two from each (USA/Sweden and USSR/Finland) reaching the medal round. Each team then played the two teams from the other pool, with the results being combined with the USA-Sweden and USSR-Finland games in pool play to determine the medals. There was no knockout stage and so no semifinal. The Soviets won silver and would have won gold if the US had lost to Finland.

Thanks, Lance. 41 years and now I know what I watched!

Of course, Wiki needs editing, too.
