It was a weird system, and I had no idea that's how it worked -- I was but a gleam in the eye when it happened -- until I looked it up a few years ago after a lifetime of hearing "But they still had to beat Finland" and having no idea what the actual mechanics were.

Iowa's offense is hot garbage, what do they risk playing the back up qb?

Really going to the "Look where sportswriters picked them to finish in their divisions before the season" well a lot in Pitt-Wake. Screams "We didn't want this matchup and have nothing to say about these teams as they actually are."

People seem to be agreeing that one way or another it will be Alabama/Cincy and Georgia/Michigan.

Is Michigan's win enough to make them the number one seed? I don't think it will matter. They are playing Georgia either way.

there was a time, long ago and far away, when people ranked Iowa as the No. 2 team in the country.

lol

also, the 1970s called and they want back the red zone offense that Iowa stole from them for tonight's game

What an incredible turn around for Michigan. Honestly, most Michigan fans were hoping for an 8-4 season before the start of the season. Some were legit concerned about beating Western Michigan
   510. Howie Menckel Posted: December 05, 2021 at 12:04 AM (#6056241)
everyone knew that Michigan State had a fluky win over Michigan.

but then Ohio St 49, Michigan St 0 at the half.

and then right after, Michigan thumps Ohio State - making a mockery of the transitive property.

Michigan can run on anybody but not pass against anybody? seems like a matchup issue.

also, are we positive that the SEC is awesome this year?

Fluky is too strong a word. MSU is a really good team who played really well at home on that day.

Best case scenario for Michigan this weekend was for Alabama to get beaten by enough that they drop out of the rankings and Michigan play Cincinnati. That didn't occur so they are probably playing Georgia. I don't know how Michigan plays offensively lends itself to beating Georgia but I am hardly an expert.

Howie, Chuck Long was not that long ago? (Unless of course maybe he was, am I getting old?)

Or did you mean the Nile Kinnick period?

I think Howie is kidding how we forget Iowa's #2 ranking less than two months ago, before Purdue humiliated Iowa.
   514. Howie Menckel Posted: December 05, 2021 at 12:25 PM (#6056251)
yes, Iowa was ranked No. 2 on Oct. 10, 2021.

hadn't realized the clueless OC is the head coach's son. the latter was trending nationally on Twitter last night, and not in a good way.

I was stunned at times by how pathetic that play calling was, now it makes some sense (and also, it makes no sense).

It doesn't figure to, unfortunately. Georgia's front seven is its strength and, presumably, capable of holding up decently against Manball. Alabama's running backs only had 76 yards on 22 carries.

The secondary was presumed to be the weakness entering the season -- four players from last year's were drafted, including the top two corners quite highly -- but no one took advantage all season, which now seems to have been the result of not actually facing a top passing offense.

Surprised that ND went to the Fiesta. I wonder if it's because it's a true new years day game.
   519. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 05, 2021 at 03:05 PM (#6056260)
There was only one other option, with the Rose and Sugar having contractual obligations. The Fiesta and Peach were evidently paired based on proximity in the rankings. 5 v. 9 and 10 v. 12.
   520. McCoy Posted: December 05, 2021 at 03:18 PM (#6056261)
I thought with the at large bowls ND would have more freedom to choose. I would assume the Peach would want them as well.

The committee decides where the non-tie-ins go. There's no bidding like the old days, unfortunately.

That sounds a bit like State, only better of course. Michigan did throw the ball for 400 yards against State (and lost), so Harbaugh and Gattis are willing to go against the Bo nature of running Haskins up the gut for two yards. In addition, presumably Corum is healthier, so it's easier to run spread plays, although that likely means we don't get to watch Haskins hurdling fools.

I'm dealing with the conflicting emotions of seeing probably the best QB under Harbaugh in McNamara, while wondering if they really need McCarthy to play more against Georgia's (and Lord willing, Alabama). It's just hard to see McNamara's success against State and even OSU -- who looked pretty much clueless on defense much of the afternoon -- translating to UGA and Bama.

Michigan's pass offense did improve as the season went along and there are more weapons than one might think. Of course, they are not Alabama with their Heisman QB and super talented receivers.

As a Michigan fan, I feel that they are playing with the house's money. It has been a fantastic year.

Every year, this day is the longest month of my life. I spend hours sitting here as matchups trickle out so I can build the Bowl Spectacular schedule, and then a bunch of horse-trading happens and I have to change half the template. I really should learn the lesson and just go for a walk in the woods, then come back when the sun goes down and everything's settled.

I Like the NY6 Bowls this year, should provide some good games. As a ND fan it sucks they didn't make the playoffs but thats on them. Hoping they can finally get a win in a major bowl game. Been since the 94 season.
