Couple missed opportunities to put the game away this quarter. I'm not sure how to feel about the play call when the offensive line was magically transformed into a collection of subway turnstiles at the snap of the ball.

It's just too cute - you want to run something like that on 1st down and catch them off guard, OK, give it a shot. But on 4th down - too much ground for Johnson to cover, too much that can go wrong on the OL, too little margin for error. And especially when you have a QB who can also be a power runner - just go get 2 yards and quit ####### around.
   102. Brian C Posted: November 05, 2022 at 03:28 PM (#6104347)
Well, that really ought to do it. Props to Toney for teaching the Gators' defense how to actually pressure a QB at halftime ... I feel like that was a big help in the 2nd half.
   103. Brian C Posted: November 05, 2022 at 03:37 PM (#6104348)
Good win for the Gators. I know A&M is diminished at the moment, but still a strong win on the road, and sets up a chance to close the year out strongly. Really all we could have asked for after the last couple of games.

Yeah, it was a sick, injury-devastated A&M team that's mediocre at full health, but Richardson looked good, defense clamped down at half and apparently the coaching staff actually made some halftime adjustments. You'd prefer to see them just go out there and blow out a team like that from the opening kickoff, but that's just not where UF is at this point.

so another fishy game time scratch in CFB today, Israel Abankada (leading rusher in country) is declared out right before kickoff. so much for more injury transparency in a legalized gambling world. He's what 4 points?

Don't know what the point of replay is if reviews are going to lead to obviously egregious calls.

How did they waste 20 minutes of my life and still not see that the Tennessee lineman had both knees down and one elbow, which contact jarred the ball loose, choosing instead to uphold the "fumble" call on the field?
   108. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 04:26 PM (#6104355)
So far, biggest difference in the game is Hooker overthrowing a receiver he had open for a touchdown and Bennett...not.
   109. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 05:42 PM (#6104356)
I often castigate Spencer Sanders, but it turns out Oklahoma State could do a lot worse!

Hooker with another overthrow of a would-be touchdown.

Illinois, trailing 23-7 entering the fourth quarter, scores a touchdown and two-point conversion, then gets inside the Michigan State 20, only to be stoned on fourth down. 8:11 to go.

I gave KU some stick for their ranking earlier this year, but they have generally played well even in their three straight losses. Full credit for winning big in a tough one today.
   113. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 07:02 PM (#6104365)
Hooker with a third receiver behind the defense that he overthrows. And the sack two plays later effectively ends the game.

Liberty denies an Arkansas two-point attempt with 1:11 left to cling to a 21-19 lead.

LSU intercepts Young in the end zone, and the crowd is on fire. First two ingredients in the recipe.

KU bowling.
   117. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 07:39 PM (#6104372)
Really suboptimal scheduling this week. Dearth of games the first two windows, then more than can plausibly be tracked in prime time.
   118. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 07:57 PM (#6104377)
FSU opens with a 56-yard touchdown pass, in what deep in my bones I will always view as the biggest game of the college football season.
   119. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 08:03 PM (#6104379)
Texas with a beautiful post-corner to go up 21-10.
   120. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 08:20 PM (#6104387)
It feels like Clemson's behind the eight ball after falling behind 7-0 on a blocked punt because the offense is looking its usual helpless self.
   121. Howie Menckel Posted: November 05, 2022 at 09:21 PM (#6104393)
Clemson, Bama, and Michigan - so 3 of the top 6 - all trailing at halftime, to Notre Dame, LSU, and Rutgers (wtf)

   122. Pirate Joe Posted: November 05, 2022 at 09:26 PM (#6104396)
so another fishy game time scratch in CFB today, Israel Abankada (leading rusher in country) is declared out right before kickoff. so much for more injury transparency in a legalized gambling world. He's what 4 points?

That's Pat Narduzzi in a nutshell. In fact earlier this season he told the media that one of the player's mothers thanked him for not telling anyone her son was injured so that's proof that he does it the right way. And my response was yeah, right up until there's a huge scandal because someone gets caught selling inside injury information to gamblers.

   123. nick swisher hygiene Posted: November 05, 2022 at 09:45 PM (#6104398)
122--How hard would it be to regulate this ####? Come up with a list of "key players"; if a team announces a surprise injury to a key player within a certain time window (24 hrs before game), all tickets are refunded, game goes off the board.
   124. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 09:46 PM (#6104399)
Clemson down 14-0 with a minute left in the third quarter, and Klubnik gets the call.

Like, at some point you just have to admit Uiagalelei isn't the guy and let the freshman have some margin for error instead of throwing him in desperate situations.
   125. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 09:49 PM (#6104400)
The kind of desperate situations where he might feel compelled to force passes and get picked off.

Michigan restoring order.
   127. Howie Menckel Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:01 PM (#6104410)
for the love of God and all that is holy, does this Notre Dame 28, Clemson 0 score eliminate the paper Tigers from the playoff?
   128. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:02 PM (#6104412)
So Uiagalelei comes back in and throws a pick-six, demonstrating the folly of going back to him after three garbage quarters because the alternative made one bad play.
   129. greenback does not like sand Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:20 PM (#6104425)
It would be nice if Michigan played the whole game against the death star like they've been playing second halves the last four games.
   130. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:25 PM (#6104429)
Jesus Christ, LSU. Four guys missed Young in the backfield.
   131. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:29 PM (#6104432)
With FSU up 38-3, I begin thinking how it would have a serious shot at the Cotton Bowl if it hadn't blown a lead against an NC State team that wasn't even allowing its backup quarterback to pass.
   132. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:32 PM (#6104434)
Somebody needs to check ESPN's math on Alabama having a 10% chance of winning the division with a loss. It would need to win its remaining games and have LSU lose twice.
   133. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:35 PM (#6104435)
Left Alabama too much time.
   134. Howie Menckel Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:40 PM (#6104440)
Loathsome Clemson with a garbage-time TD inside of 2 minutes left to get within 35-14, then tries an onside kick.

if I'm the Irish, I throw the deep ball on 1st and 2nd down......
   135. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 10:49 PM (#6104442)
Two timeouts and 21 seconds, and Kelly kneels like a fraidy cat.

SMU 77, Houston 63 final
   137. Brian C Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:00 PM (#6104446)
This Bama-LSU game is nothing if not entertaining, even if (especially?) since I can't decide who I even prefer to win. Like, what kind of a monster would root for either Bama or Brian Kelly?

Still, it's a real game, I'll give it that.
   138. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:07 PM (#6104450)
Ding dong, the witch is dead.
   139. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:07 PM (#6104453)
Kelly just didn't want to lose another game on a blocked extra point.
   140. Brian C Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:08 PM (#6104455)
More notes from SMU-Houston:

-SMU had TDs on their first 9 possessions and led 63-42 seven minutes into the third quarter.
-The only punt in the game was, surprise, by SMU.
-That was the only possession SMU didn't get a TD on, though, except for when they kneeled out to end the game.
-Houston had 3 INTs, a turnover on downs, and missed FG.
-Total yards: Houston 710, SMU 642
   141. Brian C Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:09 PM (#6104456)
Begrudging respect to Kelly for going for 2. But I want everyone to know that I'm not happy about it. Except that I didn't want Alabama to win either.

   143. Howie Menckel Posted: November 05, 2022 at 11:39 PM (#6104477)
wait, have we already killed ND-Clemson-Bama this early in the season?

I take it we can't kill both Ohio St and Michigan, too - and maybe not either one?

speculation that the Bama QB might quit since he can't be in the playoff and why risk getting hurt and possibly cost yourself millions?

but that strikes me was WAY too early. no chance he plays in the bowl game, I'd imagine. but exit before then?

such players have seven-figure insurance policies iirc. doesn't mean there is no risk, but there is no "I leave here broke" scenario.

While I'm opposed on principle to paying your college football coach $9 million - especially when he's an insufferable prick - Brian Kelly earned every penny of that salary tonight. Not just the do-or-die decision, but with a well-designed and well-executed play.

…and he was remarkably restrained after both extremely close replay calls went Alabama’s way. I don’t like having to give BK props but he was the better coach last night.

Anybody who had Vanderbilt as a trap game for Kentucky, collect your prize.
   150. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:04 PM (#6105258)
In all reality, historically under Stoops every game has been a potential trap game.
   151. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:11 PM (#6105260)
It'll work out for the Gators though - they'll get to be the beneficiaries of Vandy's emotional letdown game next week.

That felt like a pretty efficient opening drive for the Gator offense, notwithstanding a fumbled snap and a couple of near-INTs by Richardson.
   152. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:17 PM (#6105262)
You can tell the broadcasters haven't watched the Gators much this year, because the Gators got a stop on 3rd and long, and they acted like it was no big deal.
   153. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:22 PM (#6105264)
Caleb Douglas seems like he might have a little something.
   154. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:35 PM (#6105269)
I suppose I shouldn't complain about allowing that 3rd-and-17 conversion, because the Gators defense has been great on literally every other play. But still, can we not allow 3rd and 17 conversions to wide open receivers across the middle, please?
   155. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:37 PM (#6105270)
I guess if you can just hand the ball off for an 85-yard touchdown then issues in the passing game don't seem all that important.
   156. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:40 PM (#6105271)
Holy hell, somehow I just now noticed that South Carolina has a better record than the Gators do.

Been awhile since we've seen the Gators roll an SEC team like this. Keep it up!
   157. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:49 PM (#6105272)
It worked for South Carolina that time, but running the ball on third and six just screams "We don't trust our quarterback one teeny, tiny bit."
   158. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 04:57 PM (#6105273)
Meanwhile, the Gators running on 3rd and 4 just screams "We have 200 rush yards already and we're only 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter, so #### you."
   159. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:05 PM (#6105275)
Yeah, it's the kind of defensive performance that makes you wonder what exactly South Carolina was doing all week. Johnson, Etienne and Richardson are excellent runners, but the OL is opening up holes the size of Alachua County and South Carolina's linebackers are not exactly filling them with any great passion or celerity.
   160. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:08 PM (#6105276)
Gators would be in trouble today, too, if the offense needed to depend on the passing game - AR is all over the place, and even his TD pass to Pearsall was a terrible throw that Pearsall made a great adjustment on.
   161. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:14 PM (#6105277)
Meanwhile, the defense is playing like Brenton Cox was personally poisoning them before every game.
   162. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:16 PM (#6105278)
Special teams could use some help, though.
   163. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:30 PM (#6105279)
It's become clear that the Gators desperately need to coach up the Hail Mary a little more.
   164. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:31 PM (#6105281)
End-of-half management seems like something Napier needs to study up on a little bit.
   165. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 05:49 PM (#6105284)
Yeah, I didn't understand what happened there. The Hail Mary was the play all along, why send out the FG unit just to take a penalty? It's not like they were even trying to draw SC offsides to give the FG a better chance - Mihalek never even lined up for the kick.

At any rate, that's at least 3 times now that they've run a Hail Mary without Richardson even getting a proper throw off.
   166. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:06 PM (#6105287)
What a bizarre first five minutes.
   167. Brian White Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:07 PM (#6105288)
Man I *really* wanted a Desmond Watson TD there.
   168. It's Spelled With a CFBF, But Not Where You Think Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:08 PM (#6105289)
There are Fat Guy Touchdowns and there are FAT GUY TOUCHDOWNS, and that would surely have been the latter.
   169. Brian White Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:10 PM (#6105291)
That would have been the Fattest Guy Touchdown.
   170. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:11 PM (#6105292)
I think the answer to "how did Rattler bring Watson down" is pretty clearly "Watson was gassed after running 10 yards."

Nice TD.
   171. Brian White Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:12 PM (#6105293)
If you're kicking off from midfield, my feeling is that you should always try for the surprise onside kick. Maybe that's a dick move up 25, but still.

Bonus points for the kind of onside kick where you kick it as hard as you can at the closest return guy and try to bounce it off him.
   172. Brian White Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:16 PM (#6105294)
This is one of the stupidest quarters of football I've ever witnessed, and there's still nine minutes left.
   173. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:47 PM (#6105297)
Where's this defense been all year. I know SC isn't exactly the 2008 Gators in terms of offense, but they're also not worse than, say, USF. And even basic defensive competence would have won us at least 2 more games - like, we didn't need to shutout LSU or Tennessee, we just needed to stop them from scoring on every single possession.
   174. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 12, 2022 at 06:53 PM (#6105298)
Two biggest games of the year, and Mississippi has jumped out early and then has lost a lead while its offense has gone dormant for the remainder.

And then Judkins breaks a run for 35, and suddenly Mississippi's in the red zone in the final 90 seconds with a chance to steal it back.

And then Kiffin decides to start throwing and it all goes to ####.

Not to keep harping on the defense - I'm glad that they've made progress and I'm happy to see them playing well. But it's weird that they waited until halftime last week to install the Stop Everything Defense, right? They were getting torched by a crappy and depleted A&M offense in the first half last week - torched - and since then ... nothing. 0 points allowed.

Just seems weird.

Well, that TD puts a cap on this one. This was kind of the next step in the program's progression, IMO - dominating a (preferably non-Vandy) conference team. Bonus that it happened against a not-terrible SC team that beat them last year.

I was still taking journalism classes at UF when this half began.

Central Florida beats Tulane 38-31 and is now sitting pretty in the AAC. Tulane-Cincinnati on Flutie Friday most likely decides the other spot in the championship game.

If the Gators can close the season on a four-game winning streak, punctuated with a defeat of FSU in Tallahassee, that would go a long way toward making everyone feel pretty good about things. 8-4 and a respectable bowl is a nice result, considering.
   184. Brian White Posted: November 12, 2022 at 07:26 PM (#6105309)
A win in Tallahassee might be a tall order. Even if that doesn't happen, assuming they win at Vandy (and who knows, now that Vandy has a transitive win over Florida) then 7-5 is fine for year 1.
   185. Brian C Posted: November 12, 2022 at 07:28 PM (#6105310)
Yeah, I'll definitely take 8-4 with a win over FSU for sure, I think everyone would have before the year.

TCU with a bad kick return, three-and-out and short punt, setting up Texas at the TCU 43. Crowd's going bananas. Will Texas run TCU out of the building?

And Texas turns the ball over on downs.

We've secretly replaced TCU-Texas with Wisconsin-Iowa. Let's see if anyone notices.

Three possessions apiece, and the only first down came on hands to the face. The offenses look completely overmatched.

Washington leads Oregon 10-3 in the middle of the second quarter. Ducks had a fumbled exchange near Washington's goal line, got the ball back and are in the red zone.

North Carolina predictably having its filthy way with Wake Forest's defense.

Florida State seems like it's becoming legitimately good. 132-3 yardage advantage early and a 14-0 lead.

TCU with four straight possessions starting in Texas territory resulting in no points. This is starting to look like that laughable Copper Bowl.

Punting at midfield with 11 seconds left in the half is just pure fraidy cat-ism. If you complete an intermediate pass, you're in field goal range. And if it's incomplete, your opponent has time for one chuck to the end zone. Whose odds do you like there?

Touchdown! We have a touchdown in TCU-Texas!

Kendre Miller, 75 yards.

Trailing 24-3, Syracuse came out of the half with a surprise onside kick. Florida State was not surprised, and cashed in the short field.

Penix with 325 yards through three quarters, then he throws a horrendous pick at the goal line in the opening minute of the fourth. Oregon leads 31-27.
   197. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 12, 2022 at 10:22 PM (#6105334)
Oregon subsequently goes on a 10-minute drive, but Washington stiffens inside the 15 and forces a field goal to keep the game alive.

Meanwhile, Texas roughs TCU's punter then busts a coverage on Quentin Johnston, and TCU is up 17-3 with 12 minutes left, and it's getting late early for the Longhorns.
   198. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 12, 2022 at 10:37 PM (#6105335)
Penix throws a 65-yard touchdown with three minutes left. Too much time for Oregon, right? No, just the right amount of time for Oregon to turn the ball over on downs inside its own 35 -- with Nix on the sideline with a minor injury and begging to get back in -- giving the ball back to the Huskies with a chance to win it.

With a quarterback sitting on 400 yards, they run on 3rd-and-1 and get stuffed, settling for a go-ahead field goal with 51 seconds left.

As terrible as that game was, I'm thrilled that Cadillac Williams has a win under his belt.

Also he's got as many SEC wins this season as Jimbo does.

UCLA turns the ball over on downs at its own 36, trailing Arizona by three with under six minutes left. Arizona drains the clock picking up two first downs on the ground, then stalls inside the 10 and kicks a field goal at 1:07.

UCLA gets to the Arizona 29, and the game ends with three failed shots to the end zone.
