Well, that was catastrophically Franks-esque.

this could be the worst possible outcome for USC--they kept it close against an absurdly overrated Notre Dame team, which will keep Clay Helton safe for the moment

I understand why you don't go sneak there - that massive LSU defensive tackle has been blowing up Buchanan all night, and he was lined up right over the ball. But play action into the endzone with limited options seems like a sub-optimal call.

Guys. GUYS. The best UF commercial is this one.

Anyway, this game is over. I wasn’t expecting UF to win, given that Joe Burrow is now apparently the most accurate QB in history, but I think Florida acquitted themselves pretty well.

Fair enough but it's really hard not to get a half yard just by falling forward. Sometimes these things just get over-thought, and it's not like Mullen ever resorts to an ordinary QB sneak regardless.

At any rate, the real story here is the defense just being torn to shreds. I wouldn't have thought that would be something that could happen. Shades of UF-Tenn in 2001.

LSU's consistent inability to stop screen on obvious screen downs is not to its credit.

Man, if Perine had pitched to Swain there, Swain would still be running.
   211. Brian C Posted: October 12, 2019 at 11:24 PM (#5890028)
It was lower than the hip. Helmet was against his thigh, the primary force would have been around the knee.

Welp
   213. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 12, 2019 at 11:29 PM (#5890032)
The Perine trick play was fairly clever, LSU just played it really well. That option call, though...I mean, I know I just said Trask's done a good job running the option tonight, but you don't put the ball in the air on the must-have play?

Props to Vegas for that 13.5 line, though.
   214. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 12:39 PM (#5891877)
Weather is terrible in Columbia, SC, so we Gators fans are being treated to a team that can't run the ball and a QB that seemingly can't grip the wet ball. Might be a long afternoon.

   215. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 12:47 PM (#5891879)
Clemson's offense back to looking like garbage. Lawrence is 3-for-7 for nine yards with two interceptions. The defense, on the other hand, has forced turnovers on three of Louisville's first four possessions.

3-0 Clemson after a quarter.
   216. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 12:47 PM (#5891880)
Mullen and Muschamp both play conservatively for 49-yard field goals...and both kickers easily nail them in the rain. Huh.
   217. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 12:58 PM (#5891881)
This game has had more kick-off returns through a quarter and a half than you usually see in entire games these days.
   218. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:08 PM (#5891883)
A surprisingly prominent facet of SC's offense so far is throwing 50 yards downfield to no one in particular.
   219. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:10 PM (#5891884)
ESPN's studio guy called this the "worst fake punt ever." It's probably not as bad as the infamous Colts failure from a few years back, but in terms of raw comedy....
   220. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:15 PM (#5891885)
Why take a delay of game instead of calling a timeout? That's on Mullen.

In other news, it's amusing to hear Pasch panicking over the Gators not running the ball more today.
   221. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:19 PM (#5891887)

I actually love that. One of my pet peeves is coaches calling timeout to avoid a more or less unimportant delay of game. Realistically, what's the difference between 3rd and 15 and 3rd and 20? I think the timeout is more valuable than the yards in that situation.
   222. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:26 PM (#5891889)
The Sooner Schooner tipped over.
   223. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:28 PM (#5891890)
But what's the timeout valuable for in that case, exactly? If it was the second half, or even earlier in the first half, I'd agree. But with 4 minutes in the first half, you have two timeouts, what are you saving them for?

I think there's a fairly big difference between 3rd-and-15 and 3rd-and-20. Maybe a, what, 10% chance of converting or so would be a rough guess?

And now we see that Mullen didn't use them anyway.
   224. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:31 PM (#5891891)
Lawrence throws blindly into the end zone for the third time, but Ross comes down with this one. 17-3 six seconds before the half.
   225. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:49 PM (#5891893)
That's a play Henderson has to make.

And, of course, it immediately blows up in their face.
   226. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:51 PM (#5891894)
And Pasch immediately gloats when Pierce springs a long run. Love the 60-yard block by Cleveland.
   227. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:52 PM (#5891895)
I'm, uh, I'm not sure how Cleveland got away with holding on to that DB's jersey for, like, 20 yards, but I'll take it.

Of course, the replay shows the DB was grasping Cleveland's face mask.
   228. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:52 PM (#5891896)
Literally like 40 yards of blatant, unobstructed holding on that run.
   229. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 01:58 PM (#5891898)
Rules Guy says a good no-call on the hold.

I'm pretty sure this is like the 4th straight year the "winningest coach at 2 different schools" trivia question was asked during the SC-Florida game. And yet I still forgot Gary Pinkel again.
   230. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:00 PM (#5891899)
"They were running in the same direction" defense from Matt Austin was certainly, uh, interesting.

"They were running in the same direction" defense from Matt Austin was certainly, uh, interesting.

Obviously biased, but it made sense to me - what he actually said was that the defender never took a step away, with the obvious implication that the hold had no effect on the defender's movements.

I'm someone who thinks that penalties have gotten almost unbearably ticky-tack - and I'm talking about holds and PI mostly, not the dangerous player-safety penalties. So I'm happy with this. Feel free to throw in my face as soon as I'm complaining about a non-call against the Gators.
   232. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:11 PM (#5891905)
"I wouldn't do anything crazy here, I'd keep it on the ground" is actually the only thing that my Greg McElroy pull-string doll says.

Speaking of which, ILL had a would be go ahead 80 yard TD pass called back because their center got a tiny bit too far downfield in is blocking. It had absolutely no effect on the play, and it would have been the first time all season that Wisconsin had trailed.
   234. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:27 PM (#5891911)
Pasch to McElroy: "Are you being conservative here?"

No points for guessing how McElroy answered.

It had no effect on the *direction* of his movements. This is basically a pass for holding as long as you also move in the direction the defender wants to go, because no defender is going to veer away from the ball to demonstrate obstruction.

I see it as not penalizing the blocker for having good position despite some incidental jersey-grabbing.

Swain had all kinds of room on that end-around but got indecisive about where he wanted to go and ended up with nothing.
   237. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:37 PM (#5891916)
What an amazing throw on that TD, leading Swain into the end zone. Whether it was by design or not - and it's hard to say! - it was gorgeous.

And a nice job by the holder to save the XP.
   238. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:42 PM (#5891918)
That was about as catastrophic as a draw play can get.
   239. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:44 PM (#5891919)
Trask has done a great job improvising.

Ooh, Copeland just got punched right in the head.
   240. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:45 PM (#5891921)
Stupid Wisconsin forcing me to pay attention to this game.
   241. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 02:47 PM (#5891922)
Big time class by the SC fans here. Grabbed him by the facemask though, hard to argue it didn't affect the play.
   242. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:00 PM (#5891923)
Gators obviously got away with an OPI there, but I think that kind of play should be legal, at least close to the line of scrimmage. Reward players for setting up and executing clean blocks in space.

McElroy still has hurt feelings that UF is trying to pass the ball, even though "it's worked, don't get me wrong."
   243. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:07 PM (#5891926)
McElroy calling for Florida to run the ball on 3rd and goal, then labeling the WR screen for a touchdown "a long handoff" is an impressive bit of spin.
   244. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:11 PM (#5891927)
With the bye week coming up, if you can get Greenard, Zuniga and Toney back against a Georgia team that looks a lot less invulnerable than it did at the beginning of the season...well, your imagination starts getting a little frisky.

ILL easily covering the 31 point spread

I'm gonna be at the UF-Mizzou game next month in the other Columbia. I'd love for the Gators to be playing for the clinch at that game.

Illini down by three, 1 minute left, all 3 timeouts, and they waste 25 seconds getting the play off.
   248. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:17 PM (#5891934)
After 38 points on the board, McElroy is talking about how smart Mullen is for realizing that this team isn't very good at running the ball and adjusting accordingly. I mean, you just can't make this up.
   249. Brian C Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:17 PM (#5891935)

If you lose by 1 point on a FG that splits the uprights with 0:00 on the clock, can you still say you have never trailed in a game?

   254. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:28 PM (#5891941)
Shocking from Wisconsin. Not just letting such an inept team stay in a game, but having the ultimate difference be getting stuffed on three straight runs after having 1st-and-goal from the three and settling for a field goal in the fourth quarter with a chance to essentially put the game away.
   255. Brian White Posted: October 19, 2019 at 03:43 PM (#5891947)
Kirby Smart got invited to a Muschamping contest and he said, “That sounds fun.” Dan Mullen got invited to the Muschamping contest and was like, “Nah. I wanna score points.” Smart move, Dan.

Don't think I've ever seen a fleaflicker where a broken tackle preceded the flip back to the quarterback.

Chryst clock management, lousy as it is on a normal day, was pretty bad. Lots of early snaps on running clock in 4th and other shortcomings. It's like he was convinced 'we can't show tOSU too much' on film this week. Coan also regressed this week.

meant, at least Coan progressed this week, in spite of the ill advised 3rd and 5. Rare ball game to see 264 p/199 rush for UW.

ILL upset of Wiscy is biggest by point spread in Big Ten play since 1982, when I think Northwestern upset Minnesota.

2019 RUTGERS Big Ten results
Iowa 30, RUTGERS 0
Michigan 52, RUTGERS 0
Maryland 48, RUTGERS 7
Indiana 35, RUTGERS 0

so far today it's
Minnesota 21, RUTGERS 0 early in the second half

still ahead
at Illinois
Ohio State
Michigan State
at Penn State

what could go wrong?

Michigan runs a QB sneak on fourth and goal, and after 15 seconds spent picking through a pile at the goal line, the officials give them the TD. I have no idea how you even begin trying to make that call after all that time.

I have a great deal of respect for Les Miles with the way he's made Kansas sorta feisty in Year 1. That seems like some extraordinary coaching work to me.
Occasionally I think about how upset Gator fans were when UF was spurned by Kelly and Frost and had to settle for Dan Mullen.

Personally, I never wanted Kelly for a moment, but I definitely thought Frost looked like an appealing candidate.

Who's to say how it'll all work out in the long run, though. Kelly looks like Charlie Weis 2.0 at UCLA, but I can't tell if Frost is over his head at Nebraska or if Nebraska is just that messed up. And it's not like Mullen doesn't have some questions hanging over his head, too, with his just-OK recruiting record to date and a lot of really ugly wins against inferior opponents over his first 1.5 years. I thought when Mullen got hired that he'd be someone who wouldn't embarrass them, but also didn't seem like a guy who could really restore them to the top tier of the national elite, either - a high-floor, low-ceiling guy. And that's still basically where they're at now - if they lose big to UGA again in two weeks, then they're pretty much back at square one.

That said ... at least they're not so hard to watch anymore. Believe me, I do not take it for granted that when it's 3rd-and-9, I feel like they actually have a chance to convert. That's worth a lot. But in the grand scheme of things, they haven't really taken that big step forward yet under Mullen.

this week is kinda huge for the B1G. undefeated #6 penn state @ michigan state (MSU has won 5 of the last 6 games against penn state); wisconsin @ undefeated #3 ohio state (wisconsin coming off an embarrassing loss and this will be tosu's first game against a legitimately good team); one-loss notre dame @ two-loss michigan (this one's just kind of important for cross-conference comparisons. georgia beat UND, so if UND beats michigan, that puts a significant dent in the B1G's whatever the football equivalent of RPI is).

at this point, i just already assume that (the winner of) alabama/LSU, clemson and oklahoma are locks, so the last spot for the CFP is going to boil down to one of the SEC runners-up vs. the B1G conference champion.

if lSU beats alabama without tua, i have no idea whether the committee would favor a 13-0 conference champion tosu/PSU over a 1-loss alabama.

So excited for today! Don’t have to watch WVU lose, lots of good matchups.

Didn't watch much of it, but important to remember that Wisconsin's offense got shut down by Northwestern, too. Seems like they don't have a hugely viable plan B if Taylor's not running for 8 yards a carry.

That touchdown feels like death, because when all you've got is Manball and Manball isn't working...

Kansas State gets a pick on a trick play and then eventually runs it in on a 3rd and 10 QB draw to take a 4 point lead. I missed whatever happened before that.

Taylor needs to stop giving ground.

I'm not even sure if Coan's intended receiver caught that.

The window for that throw was exactly one football wide. And Coan fit it in there somehow.

Switching back to OU. K St already driving into OU territory.

K-State threatening to run away with this.

Thompson sticks a throw between three Sooners on 2nd-and-17 to set up K-State at the three, then runs it in on first down. 41-23.

Wow.
