Schedules really start to heat up over the next couple weeks.

Last weekend afternoon was the first time it felt normal w sports with a few moments during the mlb reg season. There wasn't much defense to see but some great wild games. The TT v UT game was one of the strangest. You could've filled a special teams bingo card.

How many DBs will Kyle Pitts posterize today?!
   5. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:10 PM (#5980827)
Pretty sure South Carolina already has more yards of offense on this opening drive than the Gators had during Muschamp's entire tenure at UF.

ex-Auburn QB Cam Newton has tested positive for COVID-19

James Palmer @JamesPalmerTV
Per source the #chiefs have already informed their players that their game against the #patriots will not be played tomorrow.

What's Cam Newton doing hanging out at the White House during the season anyway?
   8. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:18 PM (#5980830)
I was willing to cut the defense some slack for last week due to the circumstances, but if they get gashed all game by South Carolina, I'll officially achieve "worried" status.
   9. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:25 PM (#5980833)
I'm pleased that the Gators, after more than a decade, have finally dusted off the playbook for their old "Everything Works" offense.
   10. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:27 PM (#5980834)
Nice tough running from Dameon Pierce there. Also helps when the entire right side of the South Carolina defense screws up their assignment and lets him walk into the end zone.
   11. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:32 PM (#5980836)
Well, you know, that's a Will Muschamp team for you - march right down the field on offense, and then run around confused and helpless on defense. Same as it ever was.
   12. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:35 PM (#5980838)
South Carolina's quarterback looks like the lead singer of a Christian rock band.
   13. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:51 PM (#5980841)
I get the feeling that South Carolina's WRs are not exactly the team's strong suit.
   14. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 12:52 PM (#5980842)
Good lord, literally everything the Gators are doing is working and we get a QB draw with Trask.
   15. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:07 PM (#5980843)
QB power with Trask is fine on third and short, but literally every other weapon on the offense is a better option in every other situation.

In other news, Demarckus Bowman is transferring to UF.
   16. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:13 PM (#5980845)
Even on 3rd-and-short, it's no better than just "fine" - they have endless options and Trask running the ball is going to be the easiest option to defend. It should be a once or twice a season call to catch defenses off guard. Frankly I think Mullen was just trolling me for complaining about the Emory Jones packages.
   17. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:17 PM (#5980846)
Pitt opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown off a coverage bust, and NC State has answered with 17 points on three drives since, also using Florida's "Everything Works" playbook.
   18. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:21 PM (#5980848)
I loved SC's quarterback's response to those bull rushes by Florida's defensive line - "well, guess I'll just get sacked."
   19. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:22 PM (#5980849)
With Pitt driving, Pickett throws a pick-six, but it's negated by a roughing call.
   20. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:22 PM (#5980850)
I was going to say -- I'm not being threatened by two very large defensive ends, so I don't want to judge too harshly, but it sure looked like Hill just kind of...gave up there.
   21. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:23 PM (#5980851)
I don't understand why more teams don't use the "Everything Works" offense.
   22. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:25 PM (#5980852)
I was going to say -- I'm not being threatened by two very large defensive ends, so I don't want to judge too harshly, but it sure looked like Hill just kind of...gave up there.

In fairness to him, his own OL was blocked into him from behind, and he probably didn't realize it was his own guy instead of an actual defender initiating clobberizing. So I think that on that initial contact his instinct was to protect the ball.
   23. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:27 PM (#5980853)
OK, so now Trask is trolling me for complaining about him rushing the ball.
   24. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:27 PM (#5980854)
As we were saying, Kyle Trask is a 21st century Tommie Frazier.
   25. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:28 PM (#5980855)
I foresaw a lot of ways in which Florida could pick up big chunks of yards, but Kyle Trask gaining 20 yards keeping it on an option play was definitely not on that list.
   26. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:30 PM (#5980856)
Great to see a TD there, but ya know, maybe they should have let the clock run down a bit before snapping the ball.
   27. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:33 PM (#5980857)
LOL dropping the kickoff at the 3 ... broadcasters don't quite understand why fumbling it doesn't count as a fair catch.
   28. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:33 PM (#5980858)
Okay, I missed it. Was that not ruled a fair catch because the returner didn't actually catch the ball?
   29. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 01:40 PM (#5980862)
Correct. He muffed the catch, so it was a live ball, and then dropped down to a knee and picked it up. Broadcasters responded by saying that it wasn't a fair catch because he took a knee before catching it.
   30. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:02 PM (#5980865)
My beloved Bahamas Bowl has been canceled.

COVID takes everything precious from us, Lance.
   32. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:09 PM (#5980871)
Now THAT was a vintage Team Muschamp sequence - defense forces a 3-and-out, they're gaining some yards on the ground, unexpectedly have a chance to get back in the game against a better opponent, and then on three straight plays go penalty-penalty-turnover.
   33. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:12 PM (#5980872)
That was an awfully generous pass interference penalty. There wasn't actually a lot of contact there.
   34. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:18 PM (#5980876)
Pitt had to settle for field goals twice in the last five minutes of the half after long drives stalled, then it had 1st-and-goal from the one early in the second half and turned the ball over on downs. Can't run at all, so when the field is compressed the offense is hopeless.

17-13 NC State.
   35. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:21 PM (#5980879)
I wonder if the ESPN guys are engaged in some kind of competition to see who can fit SAT words into the broadcast. So far today I've heard Lilliputian, pernicious and epicurean.
   36. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:27 PM (#5980880)
That is some truly horrifying tackling by South Carolina.
   37. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:27 PM (#5980881)
Love watching Toney just waltz through like six defenders there.

EDIT: On second count, it was just five defenders. And yeah that tackling was just awful.
   38. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:27 PM (#5980882)
Toney split through the defense like Glorfindel's horse outraced the Ringwraiths at the ford.
   39. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:29 PM (#5980883)
Based on today's game and last week's, Toney is going to get a lot of catches on routes where he fakes toward the sideline, then cuts sharply toward the middle of the field. No one's sticking with him on those.
   40. ramifications of an exciting 57i66135 Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:34 PM (#5980884)
Toney split through the defense like Glorfindel's horse outraced the Ringwraiths at the ford.
did you just have a stroke?
   41. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:38 PM (#5980886)
Down 24 at the end of the third, facing a very 4th and 2 against a Florida run defense that hasn't exactly impressed, and Muschamp kicks a field goal.

Never change, Will.
   42. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:45 PM (#5980887)
Pitt surmises that the solution to its problems in the red zone is to score from 24 yards out.
   43. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:46 PM (#5980888)
Trask with a couple ill-advised heat checks.
   44. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:47 PM (#5980889)
Noooooo! Replay is putting the ball inside the one!
   45. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 02:47 PM (#5980890)
That was not a great series of throws from Kyle Trask.
   46. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:04 PM (#5980892)
If the Gators have a good fake punt, this 4th-and-3 would be the perfect time for it.
   47. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:22 PM (#5980893)
South Carolina not exactly displaying a sense of urgency here.
   48. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:24 PM (#5980894)
I continue to think in this game what I thought last week: the Gators' interior run defense is really soft. Perhaps relatedly, their pash rush is pretty inconsistent as well - it seems like they'll go several plays without generating any pressure at all, followed by a play where everyone gets through at once.

Anyway, it's nice of Muschamp to be happy with just keeping this game close instead of actually trying to win.
   49. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:26 PM (#5980895)
NC State takes a 24-23 lead mid-fourth after a bad roughing call -- contact to the chest one step after the throw -- allowed it to pick up an otherwise-failed third down.
   50. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:29 PM (#5980896)
So Hill could have either run it in for an easy TD stroll or tossed it to a wide-open receiver for an easy TD pass and he managed to botch the latter option. Some bad flashbacks to a bunch of Muschamp-Driskel red zone possessions right now.
   51. Brian C Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:34 PM (#5980898)
Well, overall a satisfying win, even if none of the questions about the defense were answered very satisfactorily. But I like that the Gators are finally good enough that they win relatively comfortably against mediocre opponents even when they're not playing all that sharp ... seems like that hasn't been a thing in Gainesville for a long time.
   52. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 03:55 PM (#5980903)
Pitt finally found a running game in the red zone by breaking out honest-to-god Wildcat, but after scoring to go up five, flat dropped the try for two.

Then gave up a touchdown drive in the last 100 seconds to blow it.
   53. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 04:09 PM (#5980906)
Leading 33-29 and facing fourth down deep in its own territory, TCU ran out the back of the end zone for a safety -- but without actually waiting for the clock to expire. I'm seemingly the only person who noticed this detail, as everyone else was trying to figure out what to do about TCU also being called for holding.
   54. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 04:35 PM (#5980909)
Things turned around in Tuscaloosa in a hurry.
   55. nick swisher hygiene Posted: October 03, 2020 at 04:40 PM (#5980910)
That TCU game--yeah, I thought there was a second on the clock as well.
One of the worst played "exciting" games I can recall.
(Though that may typify this misbegotten abortion of a season?)
   56. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 07:28 PM (#5980933)
With nine seconds left down 10 is one of the only times where announcers' eagerness to kick an immediate field goal late in a two-score game is actually warranted. Duke instead ran a play to make the field goal shorter, so time expired on the kick.
   57. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 07:42 PM (#5980935)
Auburn-Georgia being this early feels weird.
   58. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 08:26 PM (#5980941)
You should be going for 4th-and-3 in your opponent's territory to begin with, but with Georgia dropping somebody back to guard against a Nix pooch punt, that should make it automatic.
   59. Brian White Posted: October 03, 2020 at 10:01 PM (#5980953)
Man, Auburn looks terrible in like every aspect of this game. Well, except FG kicking. Whichever Carlson they have back there has been good on FGs.
   60. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 03, 2020 at 11:17 PM (#5980958)
Iowa State threatening to make K-State's win over Oklahoma retroactively less impressive.

Holgo's got the Houston offense in mid-season form.
   62. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:19 PM (#5982243)
Ho-hum, opening drive TD for the Gators.
   63. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:20 PM (#5982244)
Can Kyle Pitts win the Heisman? I feel like he should now be the front runner.
   64. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:34 PM (#5982246)
UF running backs having some success so far by just running over A&M defenders.
   65. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:35 PM (#5982247)
You have to imagine he'd be a pretty huge underdog, considering how Heisman voting invariably goes, but if he puts up huge overall numbers and a couple dominant performances against Georgia and Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, he'll get an invite to New York City.

Malik Davis is looking pretty healthy.
   66. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:37 PM (#5982248)
I keep waiting for the game where Trask gets big for his britches and throws five INTs, but it hasn't happened yet.
   67. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:41 PM (#5982249)
If past games are any indication, Trask will throw an occasional INT when he gets big for his britches - and so far in this game, it feels like he's certainly tempting fate and has got one coming soon - but after doing so will feel sufficiently chastened and calm down. So I'm not really worried about the 5-INT game.
   68. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:52 PM (#5982250)
OK, I'm officially on Team Florida's Defense is Bad.
   69. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:54 PM (#5982251)
Well, at least Florida is forcing A&M into third down situations. It would be nice to have actually had a stop on one of the eighty bazillion third downs A&M has had so far, but hey, baby steps.
   70. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 12:56 PM (#5982252)
First defense to get off the field on third down wins.
   71. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:00 PM (#5982253)
UF getting big plays from Wright, their third-string running back, and Shorter, their, I don't know, fifth-string wide receiver, is pretty nifty.
   72. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:03 PM (#5982254)
UF getting big plays from Wright, their third-string running back, and Shorter, their, I don't know, fifth-string wide receiver, is pretty nifty.

That's the "Everything Works" offense for you.
   73. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:05 PM (#5982255)
That little inside handoff to Toney...I might have literally swooned.
   74. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:12 PM (#5982256)
That little inside handoff to Toney...I might have literally swooned.

That was a pretty nifty play. Too bad all these nice little moments on offense are being ruined by our defense.
   75. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:15 PM (#5982257)
At this point, we're better off just letting them score to make sure our offense has enough time left on the clock.
   76. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:17 PM (#5982258)
Grantham's bringing more pressure this week, and it's working in the sense that they're affecting Mond and almost getting there. But the secondary just can't hold up long enough.

I'd like to see them go the opposite direction on at least a couple of these third downs -- rush two and drop nine, see how A&M handles it. Not like anything else is working right now.
   77. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:25 PM (#5982260)
Good lord. A&M took three timeouts with the clock stopped on this drive, including right after they spiked the ball to avoid using a timeout.
   78. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:26 PM (#5982261)
A+ clock management here from Jimbo.
   79. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:29 PM (#5982262)
That PI call was pretty weak.
   80. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:29 PM (#5982263)
Pretty heady pass interference penalty there by Davis.

(I actually think it was a fairly weak call, but still)
   81. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:30 PM (#5982264)
Nice of A&M to concede 4 points to the Gators there.
   82. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:30 PM (#5982265)
Buck-buck-bugawk
   83. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:43 PM (#5982266)
North Carolina looking so good.
   84. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:56 PM (#5982267)
Oh my dear God it's a stop on third down.
   85. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:57 PM (#5982268)
What's the name of the person you bring out on fourth down to kick the ball to the other team? It's been so long since I've seen one that I forgot what they're called.
   86. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:57 PM (#5982269)
I'm not really sure what's going on in this game but some guy just came out for A&M and kicked the ball up real high in the air?
   87. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:58 PM (#5982270)
Damn, great Brians think alike, I guess.
   88. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:59 PM (#5982271)
Well there's that too-big-for-britches INT that Trask was cruising for. Penalty bails him out.
   89. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 01:59 PM (#5982272)
If past games are any indication, Trask will throw an occasional INT when he gets big for his britches -

Well there we go. And we got bailed out by a dumb penalty.
   90. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:00 PM (#5982273)
Damn, great Brians think alike, I guess.

Well I guess we're just going to keep posting the same things the entire second half.
   91. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:03 PM (#5982274)
"Toney the WR" is just a deadly thing.
   92. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:03 PM (#5982275)
Florida is now one of those "don't give them extra plays, they'll burn you if you do" offenses. Which is...just swell.
   93. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:05 PM (#5982276)
Yes, a big improvement from the "constantly give them extra plays and then laugh at their repeated failures anyway" offense that dominated the Muschamp and McElwain years.
   94. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:08 PM (#5982277)
A&M is trying really hard to implode.
   95. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:09 PM (#5982278)
Cool, a timeout in the third quarter on the first play after a kickoff trailing by 11. I see why Fisher gets paid the big bucks.
   96. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:09 PM (#5982279)
True or false: someone from this thread, making $10 an hour, would not be doing a worse job coaching Texas A&M than Jimbo Fisher is right now.
   97. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:09 PM (#5982280)
"We shouldn't need to use a timeout here, but we're going to any way" is one of the more surprising themes of this game.
   98. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:11 PM (#5982281)
Today's AFLAC trivia question should be, "Who was the last coach that used all 6 of their timeouts with the clock stopped?"
   99. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:15 PM (#5982282)
It would be a very Kellen Mond thing to do to throw an INT right now just when A&M is starting to look vulnerable, but A&M keeps getting 12 yards a carry rushing the ball.
   100. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:17 PM (#5982283)
Hey, in the first half our defense was getting gashed by not covering guys and not getting to the QB quite in time. In the second half, we're getting gashed by just straight up getting pushed around and them running for eight yards a carry.

I guess variety is the spice of life.
