Welp, that was a depressing defensive drive.
   102. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:20 PM (#5982285)
Serious question: has ESPN ever had a booth analyst as inane as Greg McElroy? I realize that there's a lot of historical ground to cover here.

Oh great. It's 4th and Grantham.

Jimbo chose a crummy time to start coaching well.
   105. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:45 PM (#5982290)
Spiller's Weeble DNA coming to the fore in the second half.
   106. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:45 PM (#5982291)
I think Mullen has to start going for it on basically any remotely reasonable fourth down at this point. You can't trust this defense to make any sort of stop.
   107. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:52 PM (#5982293)
Well okay let's just make this field goal as hard as possible.
   108. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:52 PM (#5982294)
WW2 didn't have as many events as this FG attempt.
   109. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:54 PM (#5982295)
What on Earth was the possible point of that A&M timeout? They had 11 guys on the field, there's no way Florida is running a fake there. Is this performance art by Jimbo to try to demonstrate the pointlessness of timeouts?
   110. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:56 PM (#5982296)
North Carolina looking so good.

Yeah, about that...
   111. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:56 PM (#5982297)
Just trying to give McPherson a challenge, but no dice.
   112. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:57 PM (#5982298)
Hey y'all remember that year we were so desperate for kickers that we held on-campus tryouts and had a dentist join the team?

Man I don't miss that year.
   113. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 02:59 PM (#5982299)
My concern now is that A&M runs a nine-minute drive without throwing the ball a single time.
   114. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:02 PM (#5982300)
What??

ETA: Never mind, called a fumble after all.
   115. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:08 PM (#5982301)
So Kadarius Toney is just an All-SEC receiver now, huh?
   116. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:10 PM (#5982302)
It's always so exciting to see a pass floating into Kadarius Toney's hands with just a bit of space in front of him. Good stuff from the Florida offense.
   117. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:13 PM (#5982303)
Crud, there was the Mond INT I was waiting for, except that Wilson whiffed it.
   118. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:14 PM (#5982304)
Yeah, he could have just knocked the ball away by going up with one hand, but he tried to actually INT it and whiffed.
   119. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:20 PM (#5982305)
Well ... this looks bad. Just gotta remember that it's a crazy game and A&M is not known for closing the deal.
   120. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:24 PM (#5982306)
Damn.
   121. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:24 PM (#5982307)
Well, that was pathetic. No way the Gators should have lost that game.
   122. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:25 PM (#5982308)
That was a pretty sad way to lose the game.
   123. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:26 PM (#5982309)
LSU trailing Mizzou late.
   124. CFBF is Outside the Margin of Error Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:28 PM (#5982310)
I'll grant that this is blatant hindsight, but considering everything the Gators can do on offense, I don't know that "run Malik Davis up the middle" is really your best option in a must-have moment. Doesn't mean a fumble was predictable or anything like that, but losing the game on a fumble by your back-up running back when you can get anything you want in the passing game is a gut punch.
   125. Brian White Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:31 PM (#5982311)
I think it's fine to mix in some run plays to burn some clock in that situation. Maybe 2nd and 10 isn't the ideal situation to do that, but I don't think there was anything particularly wrong with the play call. Malik Davis just needs to hold on to the ball.
   126. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:33 PM (#5982312)
The ever-changing definition of a catch is probably going to win LSU this game.

Gotta maintain control through contact with the ground, except when you don't.
   127. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:37 PM (#5982313)
1st-and-goal inside the one, and Mizzou holds!

Two run stuffs and two pass break-ups to preserve the 45-41 lead.
   128. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:45 PM (#5982314)
Georgia opens the game with an airmailed snap, twice fails to jump on it near its own goal line, and Tennessee eventually recovers in the end zone.
   129. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 03:52 PM (#5982317)
Texas scores with 14 seconds left to tie the Red River Shootout after trailing 31-17 in the last four minutes.
   130. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 04:04 PM (#5982319)
No way the Gators should have lost that game.

I don't know ... to me, the first two weeks pretty plainly foreshadowed that something like this was going to happen. And if it had turned out differently, A&M would rightfully be kicking themselves for letting a good chance get away.

As I said last week, the Gators run defense is just too soft up the middle, and their pass rush isn't consistent. They made some adjustments and were finally able to start rattling Mond by bringing a lot more pressure, but this just left them exposed on the ground. Their defense just isn't good enough to do more than one thing at a time.

I think now after three games that this is just what the Gators are. I had hoped that they were a legit playoff contender, but instead they're version 2.0 of the 2007 team - an unstoppable killing machine on offense, with a defense that is fully capable of getting a few stops a game, most weeks.

Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt discussing what the ideal overtime format would be, and Klatt says the sport just doesn't lend itself to a suitable overtime format.

He's so close to stumbling upon the correct answer.
   132. Brian C Posted: October 10, 2020 at 04:12 PM (#5982322)
I think the current overtime rules are great.
   133. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 08:41 PM (#5982345)
Add Herbstreit to the list of analysts who don't know about illegal touching on a punt.
   134. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 09:22 PM (#5982350)
Deeply stupid field goal attempt.
   135. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 11:15 PM (#5982358)
Field goals weren't going to win that game, Kiffin.
   136. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 10, 2020 at 11:16 PM (#5982359)
Completely antithetical to the mindset displayed with the surprise onside kick at 42-42, by the way.
   137. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 12:26 PM (#5983513)
There are games where the announcers are clearly watching on monitors and reacting to things that happen two seconds after they appear on my screen. Either sync it up or let me have the dream ambient-sound-only broadcast.
   138. Brian White Posted: October 17, 2020 at 03:14 PM (#5983532)
Having a promising season ruined by a Kentucky team that could barely manage 100 passing yards on the day feels like an extremely Jeremy Pruitt thing to do.
   139. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 03:56 PM (#5983539)
When you're going to fake a field goal, you really want to put the ball in the hands of your holder 16 yards from the line to gain and let him weave his way to glory.

Brian Kelly going Full Hatter.

Louisville's defense reverted to garbage on every third down of the game-clinching drive after shocking competence for 50-odd minutes.
   141. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 07:32 PM (#5983583)
Nothing worse than a team that has 49 points deciding to go conservative to burn its opponent's timeouts in the final three minutes instead of, y'know, going out and winning the game by picking up a first down.
   142. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 07:53 PM (#5983588)
UCF gives up a go-ahead touchdown with a minute left and is forced to play offense, and, of course, immediately goes boom-boom-boom down the field, only to have College Kicker happen.

I doubt a lesson will be learned.

UGA-Bama off to an interesting start: two turnovers in the first 2 minutes, then a 50-yard bomb by 'Bama.

Florida State hammering North Carolina is unexpected.

Jumping at the hard count after you already jumped earlier on the same play and got away with it is pretty high on the bonehead scale.
   146. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 10:47 PM (#5983629)
Florida State hammering North Carolina is unexpected.

Opened the second half by blowing a chance to go up 38-7 and came away with nothing after missing a short field goal. UNC has subsequently gone right down the field three times, first turning it over on downs inside the 10 before scoring two touchdowns to make it 31-21 after three.
   147. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 17, 2020 at 10:47 PM (#5983630)
Bama has the lead with a huge pass play, which sorta felt inevitable. Wonder if UGA has a counter punch or if this is the beginning of the end.
   148. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 11:07 PM (#5983647)
Bennett ain't it.
   149. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 11:10 PM (#5983649)
UNC had a chance to make it a one-score game at the outset of the fourth after getting the ball at FSU's 30 following an interception and missed a field goal.

After going three-and-out, three-and-out, first-play interception, FSU's offense then marches down the field and ... returns the favor.

Despite UNC's failures to take its opportunities in the second half, this feels inevitable.
   150. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 11:18 PM (#5983652)
FSU promptly keeps a UNC drive alive with a third-down facemask, which is immediately cashed in. 31-28 with 4:58 left.
   151. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2020 at 11:32 PM (#5983660)
And UNC blows it by dropping three passes on its final series.

If a tight end moving two yards up the field and blocking a middle linebacker to seal the edge on an end-around is an illegal blindside block, then just make the game two-hand touch and be done with it.

Indiana's defense holds on fourth down at its own 25, clinging to a 20-14 lead over Penn State with five minutes left.

Hoosiers go three-and-out with a drop that would've gone for huge yardage on third down. 3:14 to go.
