On the other hand, that's just getting way too deep into the weeds and overlooking the big, obvious things (Florida is better than Kentucky and has better players, you have three timeouts and a good offense, and scoring is good). Plus, if you're really that scared of letting Emory Jones lead a two-minute drill, that's a pretty damning indictment of your recruiting and/or player development.

Exactly. Plus he threw on the 1st two plays to start that possession! Then having picked up a few yards and a first down, said, "eh ... never mind".

Just enormously discouraging to see the offense presumed helpless against UK after moving the ball consistently against Alabama, if that's what happened. But while I can see the train of thought you sketched out, I think the idea was probably more likely "eh whatever, we can right the ship at halftime like we did last week."

At any rate, 2-2 against Kentucky is not a good look for Mullen. Not like he should be fired for that or anything ... it just sort of makes us the Auburn of the SEC East when we should be the godd-mn Florida of the SEC East, if you follow my meaning.

If Clemson runs into the line three times to burn BC's timeouts and gives the ball back with two minutes left, it deserves to lose.

If you're giving your quarterback instructions not to throw the ball unless the tight end is completely uncovered, such that he eats the ball when that tight end has a step on his defender beyond the sticks, then you need a new quarterback.

Rescued by BC's umpteenth botched snap of the game.

Muffing a punt inside your 10 with four seconds left in the half must rank among the dumber mistakes a player can make.

Last week’s video of a man trapping a gator in a garbage can turned out to be a preview of what was in store for Florida on Saturday. Kentucky beat the No. 10 Gators 20-13 in Lexington, the Wildcats’ first home win over their SEC contemporaries since 1986.
...
Florida had 382 total yards of offense to Kentucky’s 224, but the Gators also committed eight false-start penalties in the game, including a couple at the end during that red-zone standoff

Once Georgia turned on the money cannon for its program, Florida was never again going to be the Florida of the SEC East. They drink your milkshake.

Meyer says it’s up to the team leaders to get everyone back on the same track: “The ownership of this team is with the players.”

If I was Nay'Quan Wright, I'd be a little annoyed I broke a pretty nifty 34-yard run that was called short on the half-yard line, and then Pierce got to vulture the touchdown.

I was thinking the same thing, but it feels like Mullen does this kind of thing all the time.

These throwback helmets are pretty great.

Ugh, Tyler Murphy flashback.

This doesn't feel like one of those scrappy Vanderbilt squads that gives Florida a surprisingly competitive game.
   112. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 12:38 PM (#6044981)
The Lebron James of college football just airballed that one.
   113. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 12:43 PM (#6044982)
Did any of those replays actually show the helmet making contact on that targeting call? He led with his arms and shoved him down!
   114. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 12:51 PM (#6044983)
As is his wont, Mullen installed the Dicking Around offense after those first two drives.

Red River Shootout update:

Texas with a 75-yard touchdown on its opening play, then blocked a punt to set up a two-yard touchdown "drive" to go up 14-0 two minutes in. Was threatening to get out of hand quickly when Oklahoma faced 3rd-and-10, but a 29-yard completion was the impetus for a 10-play touchdown drive. Texas then went three-and-out. Order restored? No, Rattler threw a pick, and Texas went 51 yards in three plays to go up 21-7.

And now Oklahoma's offense has gotten swallowed, though an 85-yard punt (touchback) flips the field.
   116. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:13 PM (#6044986)
Texas goes up 28-7 on a 48-yard touchdown pass, then Oklahoma gets stopped short on third down to end the first quarter. Sooners line up with three tight ends and bring in Caleb Williams for Rattler, and Williams evades four Texas defenders in the backfield before exploding through the line for a 66-yard touchdown.
   117. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:14 PM (#6044987)
These Vandy receivers might really have something going if they'd stop running out of bounds on their sideline routes.

Vandy looks like easily the worst team the Gators have played this year, including FAU. Their QB can't hit anything, their receivers can't catch, their punter can't punt, their kicker can't kick, and their defense can't cover or tackle.

But Mullen and Grantham have decided to turn the game into weird performance art, so they're only up by 14 when there's no evidence that Vandy can execute even basic plays on either side of the ball. Games like this and the complete inability to take care of business are just infuriating to me, and other than a stretch last season, they've been a hallmark of Florida football for over a decade now.
   118. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:41 PM (#6044989)
This game is crazy. Texas goes three-and-out and Oklahoma breaks out a triple pass for a 38-yard gain. On third down, Rattler has a hitch for a first down, but he passes on it and instead throws into coverage, almost getting picked off. Field goal makes it 28-17.

Texas is again forced to punt, and Oklahoma moves into Texas territory before Rattler fumbles. Bijan Robinson breaks off a 50-yard run setting up a Thompson touchdown pass to make it 35-17.

And now Williams is in for Rattler.
   119. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:44 PM (#6044990)
That's a tough overturn for Vanderbilt. Technically right, I guess, but that's about as close to a catch as you can get.
   120. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:45 PM (#6044991)
I did not see the camera angle needed to overturn that Vandy TD.
   121. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 01:51 PM (#6044992)
Watching Mullen yell at his QBs while walking off the field and then bark at the sideline reporter, I'm reminded of something that I've said before: Steve Spurrier seems like the last UF coach that is an actual normal person. Driven and competitive, sure, but not a complete megalomaniac, and ultimately understands that there's a world out there outside of football.

Zook, Meyer, Muschamp, McElwain, and Mullen all seem like mad barking loons in various ways.
   122. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:03 PM (#6044994)
I don't know, McElwain seemed pretty chill, give or take a naked shark photo. That was part of his problem, really -- a lot of the details just slipped by him because he didn't really care enough to be detail oriented.

that's one of the things that makes it easy to root for james franklin.
   124. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:14 PM (#6044998)
I thought McElwain started out kind of chill - in fact, I liked him the first year. We all knew at the time that Muschamp had left the cupboard bare on offense, but McElwain had something going with Will Grier until, you know. But they semi-salvaged that season anyway, even if the FSU-Alabama-Michigan ending left a bad taste.

But then he started losing his mind as time went on, culminating in his lunatic "death threats" episode, which forced the administration's hand. But the wheels were off by that time anyway. My impression was that as soon as things started going sideways, he was just mentally unable to deal with it.

Mullen redeemed himself with that fake punt, although on the following plays the whole offense has seemed annoyed to still be on the field.

SECOND-AND-26 UPDATE: Ah, there we go.
   125. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:21 PM (#6044999)
Can Georgia leave the running backs that wide open? They did last year.
   126. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:24 PM (#6045000)
Can Georgia leave the running backs that wide open? They did last year.

If the Gators had actual threats at WR or TE, it JUST MIGHT WORK. But alas...

ETA: ... I say as Jacob Copeland pulls a one-man show on a 2-play TD drive.
   127. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:25 PM (#6045001)
Jacob Copeland, reading Brian's post on the bench and getting very upset.
   128. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:31 PM (#6045003)
I will acknowledge that Emory Jones looks like a much improved passer while throwing downfield to wide-open receivers under zero pressure.
   129. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:31 PM (#6045004)
OK, this is the level of dominance you really need to see playing a team this bad.
   130. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:34 PM (#6045005)
I don't know when the last time I saw a QB as inaccurate as this Vandy guy is. He did have a couple of nice throws earlier, but holy hell is he like a chimp with a six-shooter.
   131. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:36 PM (#6045006)
Remember when Georgia beat Vandy 62-0 a couple weeks ago and people thought that seemed impressive? I'm not even suggesting that Georgia is any less good than anyone thinks, but Vandy is just amazingly awful even by usual Vandy standards.
   132. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:37 PM (#6045007)
This would seem to be a great opportunity to give Richardson extended snaps running the actual offense.
   133. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:43 PM (#6045008)
Jones just can't put together a clean game, huh?
   134. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:44 PM (#6045009)
It's probably actually just time to feed the running backs and run out the clock.
   135. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:48 PM (#6045010)
See that was a "targeting" play where the tackler was clearly leading with his shoulder too.

ETA: 'kay good
   136. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:52 PM (#6045011)
I feel for that kicker - he must feel awful for letting his team down by failing on a FG down 42-0.
   137. Brian C Posted: October 09, 2021 at 02:56 PM (#6045012)
I wonder what axe Mullen is over there grinding with that series of play calls at this stage of the game.
   138. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:19 PM (#6045014)
With Texas's offense going dormant, Oklahoma creeeeping back in. 41-33, and the Longhorns are facing 3rd-and-18 from their own 10.
   139. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:25 PM (#6045016)
Kind of a weird game, but ultimately ended up where you'd expect and want it to end up.

Now to the end of the Red River...whatever they're calling it these days.
   140. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6045017)
That is a truly remarkable catch for Mims. Extraordinary.
   141. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:32 PM (#6045018)
Arkansas scores to tie Ole Miss at 45, but 1:22 left seems like too much time.

And a 68-yard touchdown with 1:07 left leaves Arkansas with too much time.
   142. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:48 PM (#6045022)
1:07 was one second too much. Soooooie scores on the last play but goes for two and fails.
   143. Brian White Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:49 PM (#6045023)
I don't love going for two there, and I *really* don't love that play call. Why are you asking KJ Jefferson to roll out and throw into a tight space? Just womp your way into the end zone!

Fun game tho.
   144. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 09, 2021 at 03:53 PM (#6045025)
Primary option was the shovel pass.

But I also don't like going for it unless you're a prohibitive underdog. The difference of a yard between the pro and college games makes it a bad bet.
   145. Brian White Posted: October 09, 2021 at 04:07 PM (#6045028)

That was a pretty great set of noon games.
   146. we all water; we all 57i66135 Posted: October 09, 2021 at 04:15 PM (#6045030)
well that's a wonderful start for the penn state offense, on the road, against a top 5 opponent.
   147. Brian White Posted: October 09, 2021 at 04:24 PM (#6045031)

Florida State up 21-10 at the half in Chapel Hill. The run-heavy Jordan Travis offense I've been advocating (18 of 26 plays) with passes as a change of pace (32-yard touchdown off play-action following six straight runs) is working.

Yeah, good call. I think it was fair to see what Milton had but it looks clear that Travis is the way forward.

FSU went into UNC an 18-point dog and controlled the game. FSU's mediocre defense made Heisman candidate (cough) Howell look pretty pedestrian. Surprising, but I'll take it.

2 in a row, look out Alabama.

penn state's current QB had only thrown 8 career passes before today, and this is his first meaningful collegiate appearance, where he happens to be playing on the road against a top 5 team with a top 5 defense.

but yes, this team does not look very good right now.

Blackledge's rationale for kicking a field goal on 4th-and-2 from the three is that "Michigan hasn't trailed all year," and 3-0 in the first quarter will apparently induce panic.

Saban just letting A&M run out the half backed up inside its own 10 despite having three timeouts. Could've forced a punt with about a minute left.

To her credit, Jamie Erdahl asked the question, but he took it to be asking why they hadn't used the timeouts on offense prior to pinning A&M with a punt and gave a kind of nonsensical answer.

That kick probably didn't defy the laws of physics, but it sure looked like it did.

Best college football day in a while, there were a lot of great games.

Eagles were 6-6 for -2 yards on screen passes in the first half, per ESPN Stats & Information. Jalen Hurts is averaging just 2.5 air yards per attempt.

I've said before Kyle Field is the loudest venue in college football and after attending my 3rd game there last night, no change in my views. Also, huge props for scoreboard operation. They showed replays of everything and from several angles when they were actual reviews. Marvelous. Barely a day earlier I never did see Moncada's play into the 3B/LF seats early in Game 2 where he must have been tangled or something. Wouldn't know. . Still haven't seen it. Kyle Field is great and that game was awesome. In my top 5 in person on a list of about 125 games.

Even for a bama fan that must’ve been a great game to attend - always wanted to be there for an all timer in a great atmosphere. Instead I’ve gotten to watch Michigan get its teeth kicked in.

low-key favorite part of the Gruden emails is him saying a bunch of awful #### on a chain w/ the Hooters co-founder

Statement from Jon Gruden: “I have resigned as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

It is not quite true that Washington State head football coach Nick Rolovich has been trying to get fired for several months now, but he has been very actively trying to figure out what he can get away with. In July, Rolovich released a terse statement on social media explaining that he had “elected not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine for reasons which will remain private” and saying that he would not be discussing that decision—one he took care to say, as such people reliably do, was every individual’s decision to make—any further. Rolovich refused to discuss it at the Pac-12 media days; he was the only one of the 12 coaches and 24 players slated for the event to attend it virtually. He didn’t talk about it there, and he hasn’t talked about it since. Because Rolovich has continued not to get vaccinated—for a while he said he would abide by the state’s mandate for public employees and didn’t, and then he stopped saying even that—people have continued to ask him. If his appeal on religious grounds is denied, he may well lose his job on Monday.

The most obvious armchair diagnosis here has always been that Rolovich has a terminal case of Football Guy Brain. When Washington State beat Oregon State last year in a game in which his team was without an astonishing 32 players, Rolovich chastised a reporter for asking about whether those absences were related to the pandemic, and signed off on the press conference by testily saying, “No corona.” That particular strain of coachy impatience and pissy refusal to let the pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands of people Become A Distraction From Winning Ball Games was not uncommon among Rolovich’s cohort at the time. Saying “No corona” on a postgame Zoom call, and doing so in exactly the same tone as a diner patron trying to make clear that he very much does not want onions on his burger, was very obviously insufficient as a response to the pandemic or anything else

So the bye didn't cure what ails the Clemson offense, obviously.

Alas, in the end, Dino Babers didn't really want to win all that badly.

Entrusting a college kicker from 48 yards on 4th-and-1 when you're trailing by three with more than enough time to score a touchdown. Not optimal.

Even more so when your running back is ripping off seven yards a rush.

191-not this time. I've been to Yell Practice at Kyle Field in 98, and have seen it for road games at various places including the grounds of the State Capitol of South Carolina. I was over in Northgate last Friday night. Yell Practice.. It's something else, another reason among several why college football is more enjoyable and interesting than pro. Btw this revamped Kyle Field is outstanding. Better than any college stadium and many pro ones too. I've been to dozens of college venues. Yale Bowl, KU Memorial, Baylor's old stadium, Northwestern and Purdue are my least favorite. Yale bowl is a total dump.

It was very nice of ESPN to put Jeff Foxworthy on GameDay, in order to make Corso's schtick look comparatively less stale and played out.

Can't imagine that the orange jerseys will help.
