I see Mullen got impatient with that TD drive and has reinstalled the Dicking Around offense for this drive.

The way this season has gone, I just can't fathom where he gets off wasting possessions like this.

Defense has been good so far today, but that 3rd and 15 was absolutely gross.
   203. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 12:45 PM (#6046870)
I see we're back to 3rd and Grantham this drive.
   204. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 12:51 PM (#6046871)
The 3rd and 6 bugged me even more than the 3rd and 15, honestly. Running the ball right up the middle ought to be a complete give-up play call, but instead they gained 12. You give up an occasional pass conversion on 3rd and long, well, it is what it is. But giving up 12 yards right up the gut is just getting beat.

Can't wait to hear Mullen's excuses after this one.
   205. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 12:58 PM (#6046872)
If not for the holding that would have been the worst play in the recent history of the Florida defense.
   206. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 12:59 PM (#6046873)
uh what

Edit: oh, okay. Boy that call bailed us out.
   207. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:02 PM (#6046874)
So the Gators dicked around when they had the wind going their way, and now that they're turned around for the 2nd quarter, Mullen calls 3 straight passes into the wind with their QB who is questionably accurate anyway. Like, just forgot that they're allegedly a really good rushing team at a time when rushing the ball would really come in handy!

Sometimes I wonder about Mullen's focus. For every drive that's called with brilliant precision, there seem to be two drives that are called with almost complete indifference. It's like he's in practice and trying to figure out what will work.
   208. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:11 PM (#6046876)
The Dan Mullen offense is basically one part watching the team cut through the defense like warm butter, and two parts watching a bunch of guys looking for a bucket to sh*t in.
   209. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:12 PM (#6046877)
Well...####.
   210. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:15 PM (#6046878)
Make it three parts.
   211. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:24 PM (#6046879)
That TD play was a really clever design by LSU, but it's the same problem we've seen with Grantham's defenses since forever - the Gators' pass defense is based exclusively on hoping for the sack, and the guys who aren't blitzing don't seem to know what to do, and basically just stand around.

Hey, I think that's the first touch by a Gator RB this whole quarter.
   212. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:46 PM (#6046883)
Holy hell
   213. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:46 PM (#6046884)
That was the most indifferent Hail Mary defense I've ever seen in my life.
   214. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:47 PM (#6046885)
That is the worst Hail Mary defense I've ever seen. Literally one Tiger found the ball.
   215. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:47 PM (#6046886)
Shorter is like 11-feet tall, but he didn't even have to use it to make that catch.
   216. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 01:50 PM (#6046887)
Not to grind my axe too sharply, but sorta makes Mullen's decision to give up at the end of the half against Kentucky look even stupider.
   217. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:02 PM (#6046888)
Also, you get one challenge per game, right? And you only get a second if the first is successful?

If I'm right about that, Coach O wasted his challenge on a play that was obviously a TD.
   218. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:13 PM (#6046889)
Well, for all my griping, I actually still felt pretty good about the Gators coming back to win this game. But not now!

No one to even blame there except Jones. He goobered up a beautiful wheel route by Davis and then that INT was just a plain dogshit throw.
   219. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:17 PM (#6046890)
That's a pretty nifty little play -- fake toss, then a fake QB run, all to get the running back wide open out of the backfield.
   220. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:24 PM (#6046893)
SELF-RELIANCE

(A one-act play by Brian C)

ANTHONY RICHARDSON: Coach, we're going for 2 here? What's the play call?

DAN MULLEN: IDK figure it out yourself, kid.

   221. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:31 PM (#6046894)
I know that Mullen and Grantham have this bickering-old-married-couple dynamic going for them these days, but one really has to wonder how much more of this the Gators are willing to take.
   222. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:31 PM (#6046895)
Mullen's feeling a bit inspired, it seems.
   223. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:34 PM (#6046896)
I've been a bit of an Anthony Richardson skeptic this year, but I don't know how you can go back at this point. If Richardson is fitting slants into tight windows in the endzone, that's kind of the ballgame.
   224. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:37 PM (#6046897)
I've been more on Team Emory, but man that drive looked sooooo smooth. At some point if it's working then stick with it.
   225. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:42 PM (#6046898)
I don't know what to think about Jones/Richardson, honestly. These last two drives feel revelatory BUT they're also the first two this year where Richardson has looked like he can make even moderately difficult throws. I had actually come to believe Mullen that Jones gave them the better chance to win right now. At the same time, it certainly feels like Richardson's upside is considerably higher than Jones, and right now isn't terribly relevant when you find yourself down three TD against a mediocre team in what would be the third loss of the year.

At any rate, obviously you have to stick with him in this game until he crashes into the hillside. And it'd be nice if Mullen kept his foot on the gas instead of drifting off into one of his daydreams.
   226. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:45 PM (#6046899)
I see we've gone back to the Everything Works offense. I approve.
   227. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:46 PM (#6046900)
Tie game! That sure happened fast.
   228. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:48 PM (#6046901)
So all of a sudden we're back to the 2020 offense...and the 2020 defense.
   229. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:52 PM (#6046902)
So all of a sudden we're back to the 2020 offense...and the 2020 defense.

The difference is that when the offense isn't working, it's almost always because Mullen has ostriched his head up his own ass. The defense, on the other hand, is ... conceptually flawed. We've talked about it endlessly over the past few years, but the organizing principles behind this defense are:

1) Sell out to get a tackle for loss
2) Uh-oh
   230. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 02:52 PM (#6046903)
That is the third time this game UF has allowed LSU to convert third and five+ on a running play.
   231. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:01 PM (#6046906)
Well this isn't optimal.
   232. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:03 PM (#6046907)
We can't have nice things.
   233. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:03 PM (#6046908)
So like I was saying, enough of this Richardson talk, it's time for us to all circle our wagons around Jones here.
   234. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:05 PM (#6046909)
Props to Mullen for actually going for it on 3rd and 13 with Jones there. I expected a QB keeper or some low-percentage screen.
   235. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:08 PM (#6046910)
Props to Mullen for actually going for it on 3rd and 13 with Jones there. I expected a QB keeper or some low-percentage screen.

That's the point of the Everything Works offense, though, isn't it? May as well be bold!
   236. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:10 PM (#6046911)
Throwing short of the sticks on 4th down is always a nerve-wracking thing to do, but it worked I guess.
   237. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:13 PM (#6046912)
Ooh that TD was a pretty throw. Richardson seems to have a tendency to float passes, as if he's trying to put some touch on them - see his previous pass attempt to Copeland, which fluttered short - but when he decides to zip it, he seems a lot more accurate.
   238. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:15 PM (#6046914)
That is a gutsy throw on 3rd and 10.
   239. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:15 PM (#6046915)
Yeah that was a pretty sweet TD throw.

I like the design of these fake-the-option to one side, and throw back across the field, but it seems like AR-15 doesn't quite have the arm for those.
   240. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:23 PM (#6046917)
Nebraska lost to the Gophers? Good lord.
   241. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:26 PM (#6046919)
Happy Scott Frost Day everyone.
   242. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6046921)
That LSU TD was the perfect encapsulation of the Grantham defense - three guys in the QB's face, no one covering the guy in the flat.
   243. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:32 PM (#6046922)
Not to count chickens or anything, but I think you've got to seriously consider going for two if you manage to drive for a touchdown here.
   244. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:35 PM (#6046923)
How the hell did that run go for a first down?
   245. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:37 PM (#6046924)
I didn't think he had a shot, but damn he's fast when he gets up to full speed.

I guess that interception was inevitable, but I sure would have liked to see Wells fight a little harder for it.

Tim Reynolds @ByTimReynolds
Maybe every college football team is bad. Have we considered this?

   247. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:38 PM (#6046926)
Wells was getting boxed out, and it isn't like he's a huge dude. Just a bad throw there.
   248. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:40 PM (#6046927)
Well, Florida lost the turnover battle 4-0, and LSU was getting 7 yards a rush. Given those two facts, its a minor miracle we only lost by seven.
   249. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:40 PM (#6046928)
Assuming Richardson is the guy moving forward, Mullen's first priority needs to be coaching him to just eat the ball sometimes and not throw no-chance passes just to avoid a sack.
   250. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:41 PM (#6046929)
Wells was getting boxed out, and it isn't like he's a huge dude. Just a bad throw there.

Just pull the defender down and take the offensive PI. Gotta do something other than just stand there and watch it happen!

But yeah, obviously the primary problem is that it was a terrible throw.
   251. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:41 PM (#6046930)
Of course, it does seem pretty clear at this point that Mullen is heading toward a bad end, if not this year than next, so maybe it doesn't really matter what he works on.
   252. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:42 PM (#6046931)
In a 20-15 game, Indiana went pass-wacky with its backup, who has 188 yards on 51 attempts and two picks, including one returned for a touchdown.
   253. Brian C Posted: October 16, 2021 at 03:44 PM (#6046932)
Welp.

Mullen's got a lot of questions to face this week, and he's always genuinely terrible at answering them. So I guess we'll see how that goes, but it's going to be an ugly couple of weeks. And with UGA looming on top of everything else.
   254. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 16, 2021 at 04:35 PM (#6046935)
Georgia drive that should've ended in a fumble instead ends in a touchdown because Kentucky defenders didn't jump on the ball, assuming it was an incomplete pass.
   255. Meatwad Posted: October 16, 2021 at 06:33 PM (#6046972)
I guess Iowas lack of play makers on offense is going to doom them. Purdue has looked like the better team most of the game.
   256. Brian White Posted: October 16, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6046988)
I'd also guess that the coaching that Iowa has on the offensive side of the ball is probably not up to par.

Nepotism: not really a great idea!

4 hr 40 min game in Knoxville. 175+ snaps. Debris tossed and it ends with Milton running meekly out of bounds. Corral w my fake Heisman vote thus far.
   258. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 17, 2021 at 12:34 AM (#6047005)
Trailing 31-26 in the last four minutes, Vols quickly go from their 10 to midfield. A sack, a hold, and Hooker running out of bounds for no gain sets up 3rd-and-27. Hooker rolls left, and instead of throwing the ball away or stepping out of bounds, he gets tackled for a three-yard gain two inches from the sideline.

It takes 35 seconds to get the snap off on 4th-and-24, and he hits the tight end up the seam, who goes down right at the sticks, called just short. Worldwide Leader in Half-assed Coverage has no camera on the other side of the field, so there's not a reverse angle showing the ball in relation to the line. Call stands.

Crowd goes nuts. Waves of debris to the field. Kiffin is hit by a golf ball, and the Tennessee cheerleaders and band escape up the tunnel to get out of the line of fire.

After a 20-minute delay, the game picks back up with 54 seconds left and Tennessee with all its timeouts. Ole Miss goes backwards three times and punts, and the return takes it beyond midfield with 27 seconds left.

Hooker scrambles to the 33 on first down and gets hurt on the tackle. Joe Milton comes in and completes a pass to the 21, and they clock it with 11 seconds. Milton rolls right and throws high to Cedric Tillman behind the defense, but it's off his hands. Three seconds. Milton wants to escape to his right on the final play, but he bumps into his linemen, and evidently in a panic, escapes the pocket left, and instead of making a desperate throw, he crosses the line and, having a wall of defenders between him and the goal line, steps out at the eight.

Orgeron supposedly confirmed gone at season's end. I guess beating a self-destructive Dan Mullen and Florida didn't particularly impress anyone who matters at LSU.

As someone who pays attention to football only in written form, I happened to hear a clip of him talking the other day on some radio sports talk show, possibly for the first time in my life. He barely sounded human.

If Kansas beats Oklahoma...
   263. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 23, 2021 at 01:19 PM (#6048550)
KU up 10-0 on Oklahoma near the end of the half, a couple penalties force Oklahoma into a 2nd and 37...and then Kansas gets called for a facemask.

Cincinnati struggled in the first half at Navy, but a 14-0 third quarter has restored order.

Kansas still clinging to a three-point lead over Oklahoma as we start the fourth quarter, but it does feel like things are on the precipice of permanently flipping OU's way.
   266. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 02:30 PM (#6048555)
Navy had a field goal to take the lead on the penultimate play of the half blocked. Cincinnati should've returned it for a touchdown but stepped out of bounds and had to settle for a field goal and 13-10 lead.
   267. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 02:59 PM (#6048558)
Kansas falls behind 21-17, fumbles while driving, gives up a 40-yard touchdown on 4th-and-3, but then gets off the mat with a 75-yard drive in five plays. 2-point try fails. 28-23 with under six to go.

Illinois with what looked like a go-ahead touchdown at Penn State on an "Oh, ####!" screen, but hours after the play, with the kicking unit already on the field, the officials decide the ball was caught beyond the line of scrimmage, making a receiver blocking offensive pass interference. Ball was snapped and caught at the 14.

But Penn State commits a facemask on the next play, wiping out 2nd-and-24. Then Illinois has a 14-yard touchdown run wiped out by a hold. Penn State gets away with pass interference, and the sequence ends in a 37-yard field goal on 4th-and-15.

10-10 with 11:49 to play.

IMO, Michigan’s gotta do a QB switch.
   272. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 03:23 PM (#6048567)
Cincinnati had a clinching interception undone by a roughing call, then committed pass interference to set Navy up on the doorstep.

Long review finally upholds the kick recovery.

Wake is now 6-0 and in danger of winning out without ever playing a particularly good team.

Though giving up 59 points to Army and its 1950s offense is not a great sign.

Illinois-Penn State gets to triple overtime, and Penn State runs the Philly Special on the first two-point try. Underthrow and drop. Illinois then has a bootleg and pass to the flat open, dropped.

First I've heard of these new OT rules. Have there been other high profile games yet this year that have gone to a 3rd OT? I guess it's 2 points if you score one? Maybe we'll never find out with these two teams.
   277. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:09 PM (#6048574)
I don't understand teams deciding to play defense once the overtime gets to dueling two-pointers. There is no discretion about whether to go for fourth downs, and therefore no advantage in knowing what your opponent did.
   278. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:12 PM (#6048575)

None of consequence I don't think.
   279. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:15 PM (#6048576)
Yeah, if it's anything like soccer penalty kicks, you'd think you'd want to be on offense first, as there is a lot of extra pressure if you have to score to tie once the other side scores. Teams kicking first win 55% or more of soccer penalty kicks, and those don't even start with sudden death like this. They're also a bit similar in that mostly the offense has to execute correctly to score, with the defensive being mostly reactive, so (the theory goes) the pressure tends to affect the offense more.
   280. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 04:16 PM (#6048577)
Illinois really should've had it in the fourth overtime. Sitkowski was on the edge with a receiver in the flat and only one defender in the play. Defender came forward, so he just had to lob the ball, and instead he held it until he was about to be hit and made a panicked short throw, getting himself hurt in the process.

Finally. Mercifully.

for anyone who didn't watch the whole ####### thing:

-- penn state's QB couldn't move or throw for most of the game. i'm 90% sure he has broken ribs.
-- penn state's offensive coordinator compensated for that weakness by refusing to call run plays.
-- penn state's defensive line has a pair of 270 lb DTs and a pair of 235 lb DEs.
-- illinois ran for 400 yards.
-- the refs were ####### awful (though they handled the 9 OTs reasonably well)

all in all, a deserved road win vs. a top 10 team for illinois and a thoroughly well-deserved homecoming weekend loss for penn state.

Taisun Phommachanh in for Uiagalelei, just as I'd gotten comfortable spelling the latter.
   285. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 23, 2021 at 05:50 PM (#6048588)
Not that Uiagalelei's been the sole culprit. When Clemson was up 7-0 in the second quarter, he hit Shipley in the hands with what would've been a 62-yard touchdown but was instead a flat drop.

Uiagalelei came back in with Clemson trailing 27-10, and 94 seconds later it was 27-17. But Pickett has converted two third downs with runs -- first a scramble, then Quarterback Power on 3rd-and-5 -- to burn half of the remaining eight minutes.

4th-and-24, and he hits the tight end up the seam, who goes down right at the sticks, called just short. Worldwide Leader in Half-assed Coverage has no camera on the other side of the field, so there's not a reverse angle showing the ball in relation to the line.

Oklahoma State-Iowa State coming down to a spot on fourth down, and Fox also doesn't have a camera on the other side of the field, so the ball is never visible in any replay. Come on.

Not that Uiagalelei's been the sole culprit. When Clemson was up 7-0 in the second quarter, he hit Shipley in the hands with what would've been a 62-yard touchdown but was instead a flat drop.

I was at the game, and my comment was that Uiagalelei was not very good, but he didn't get any help at all from his receivers.

If NC State loses, it will be due to multiple dropped passes in open space turning huge gains into killed drives.

Meeeeechigan with an early 93-yard touchdown. Safety late to react on a cross, resulting in the last 70-odd yards.

What’s the worst possible scenario for the Big 10?
if the loser of this game beats Ohio St, and the winner of this game does not beat Ohio St?
The Big 3 go 1-1 head to head, and OSU has the extra early loss—that potentially keeps all three teams out of the playoff, no?

I want Mel Tucker brought up on charges for calling three timeouts at the end of the half in a failed icing attempt. THREE.

Cincinnati struggling with a 1-6 Tulane after struggling with a 1-6 Navy. What a great #2 team!

Georgia - everything is falling into place. Don't screw it up.

This would be easily fixed by not allowing consecutive timeouts, but shrug.

that IS the rule in the NFL, of course

That was complete s%*thousery from Mel Tucker at the end of the first half, and I love it.

Though if I were the coach, I'd call the first two, then stand very close to the ref looking ready to call the third, and just not call the third timeout.

Also, Iowa managed 57 yards of offense with no turnovers in the third quarter. This was a vast improvement over their offense in the first half, which was 17 yards and three turnovers.

Meanwhile, Michigan State seems to be looking to set the record for most consecutive catches that need to be video reviewed before being ruled complete.

A one-loss champion definitely goes ahead of Cincinnati and any ACC champion short of an undefeated Wake Forest.

So, assuming Wake loses, the worst-case scenario for the Big Ten is 11-1 Alabama beating 12-0 Georgia, Oklahoma continuing to dance between the rain drops, and Oregon running the table. I think Michigan/Michigan State wins a direct comparison with Oregon pretty handily based on schedule strength.
