I feel like today's setting up as a Dan Mullen Close-Call Special, where the Gators hang with a tough opponent but still lose. At this point in the Mullen Era, it's pretty clear that there are games that gets Mullen's attention and games that don't so much, and this has got to be one of the former.

If they do get embarrassed, I think it's the mortal wound to the Mullen regime. I don't know what a Close-Call Special does ... just sets us up for a bunch of tea-leaf reading during the Samford game, I guess.

I can’t remember ever seeing a running back have a better day than Kenneth Walker of Michigan State, today – from the FOX graphics about his stats it seems few other people have, either. Uncanny success finding daylight.

Michigan had a strip-sack for a touchdown at the end of the half that was overturned on review despite a lack of clear evidence. Now looming large.

Running a deep play action pass on 3rd and 1 when UF hasn't stopped a counter play in three weeks feels like a bit of a misfire.

Blatant interference uncalled as Michigan turns the ball over on downs.

Or, judging by that opening possession ... maybe not.

I’m at tOSU for the PSU game. The fans have been quite nice but Brutus thumbed his nose at us.

"Do you bite your thumb at us, Brutus?"
   309. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 03:57 PM (#6050102)
So - miss a handoff, stand there wondering what happened, then just run for the first down anyway. Ladies and gentlemen, the Todd Grantham defense!

Michigan got boned pretty hard by the officials but did its own share of foot-shooting, with a drop of what might've been a touchdown, an overthrow of a definite touchdown, an unforced fumble on an exchange, the traditional "punter dropping the ball against Michigan State"...
   311. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:10 PM (#6050104)
I thought Michigan’s receivers were interfered with at least twice, but the same guys also dropped some catchable balls. And the defense offered no resistance in the 4th quarter.
   312. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:16 PM (#6050105)
Getting out of the first quarter tied feels like a win.

Acknowledging that there aren't a lot of good options when you're facing 4th and 7 from the 34 with a redshirt freshman quarterback equipped with a fairly erratic throwing arm, I think the 51-yard field goal attempt was probably the wrong call there.
   313. Brian White Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:37 PM (#6050108)
I think Richardson's flaws are really starting to show here, particularly on the sack on first down there. The ball simply has to come out before then.

EDIT: Also, the 51-yard field goal would have absolutely been the right call there. 4th and long against UGa is just a bad, bad idea.

Another edit: And yes, I'm aware of the irony of complaining of Richardson holding the ball too long, when the other QB option is Emory Jones.
   314. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:39 PM (#6050109)
True but I also think that Mullen is rather perversely calling plays as if Richardson is a polished dropback passer.
   315. Brian White Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:41 PM (#6050111)
So if your momentum carries you into the end zone on an INT, you can take the touchback, right?
   316. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:43 PM (#6050112)
Yes? But from the way he dove out of the endzone, the DB there clearly thought he was going to take a safety. Can't really blame him for not being sure in the moment and playing it safe.
   317. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:44 PM (#6050113)
Lawrance Toafili with a Michael Dyer-on-steroids touchdown for Florida State against Clemson. Didn't just land on top of a defender; bounced off a prone defender, somersaulted, landed on his feet, then tiptoed along the sideline.
   318. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:44 PM (#6050114)
Danielson seems to be trying really hard to start a quarterback controversy for UGA.
   319. Brian White Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:45 PM (#6050115)
Welp.
   320. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:49 PM (#6050116)
Why does Danielson keep talking about the Gators "getting out of the half" when there was almost 2.5 minutes left and Georgia had all three timeouts? In what universe would Smart have let them run out the clock while backed way up in their own end of the field?
   321. Brian White Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:56 PM (#6050119)
Hey remember that time it looked like we might get out of this half at 3-0? That was awesome.
   322. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 04:57 PM (#6050120)
Jesus, he's still talking about how they only needed one first down to get out of the half.
   323. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 30, 2021 at 05:07 PM (#6050123)
Torrence not getting a touchback on that interception has proven to be a pretty consequential play, huh?
   324. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 05:16 PM (#6050125)
I just don't understand what was going on in that whole first half. You'd think that Richardson ran like Kyle Trask the way that Mullen was calling plays for him. I understand that Georgia has a great defense and a great run defense in particular, but I don't see how it helps to ignore your own strengths. Felt like spite on Mullen's part - "you can make me switch QBs, but you can't make me like it."

   325. Brian C Posted: October 30, 2021 at 05:47 PM (#6050127)
Guys, I'm starting to think that this might not be the Gators' day.
   326. CFBF is Obsessed with Art Deco Posted: October 30, 2021 at 06:12 PM (#6050131)
There's some household cleaning I've been putting off. Seems like a decent time to get to it.
   327. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 06:31 PM (#6050133)
Mid-fourth, and Florida State strips Uiagalelei and returns it for a 20-17 lead. Clemson offense looked pretty good in the first half. Not so much in the second.
   328. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 07:05 PM (#6050136)
FSU still can't pass block, which became wildly apparent when it had to throw trailing by four in the last two minutes, with consecutive sacks -- including one against a three-man rush -- basically ending the game.
   329. Mike A Posted: October 30, 2021 at 07:09 PM (#6050137)
Yeah, FSU's offensive line is...not good. Not real happy with the refs in the 4th. Calling an unsportsmanlike on a kid who throws the ball in the air after scoring a defensive touchdown just seems ridiculous. But whatever, good game, close game, congrats Clemson, etc, etc.
   330. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 09:12 PM (#6050165)
Is an SMU or Houston win better for Cincinnati? SMU wins, it's likely a battle of 10-0 teams before Thanksgiving, then a rematch two weeks later. Houston wins, it's two shots at ranked, one-loss teams.

i do not love the way this game is being refereed.

and that is an absolute horseshit ejection.
   332. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 10:39 PM (#6050214)
SMU faced 4th-and-4 deep in its own end with under two minutes left, converted in the face of heavy pressure, and tied the game with a 46-yard field goal...

Only to have Houston return the kickoff for a touchdown.
   333. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 10:44 PM (#6050221)
SMU in turn returned a kick to the Houston 35 and got one throw to the end zone. No dice.
   334. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6050241)
No idea what Mack Brown was thinking not kicking the field goal trailing by 10 with six seconds left. Get a kick through the uprights in four seconds, onside recovery and Hail Mary is the only viable path. A passing play just kills the clock, even if successful.
   335. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 30, 2021 at 11:16 PM (#6050252)
Lightning couldn't strike twice with blocked kicks returned for touchdowns against Ohio State, could it?

Virginia-BYU is higher-scoring than a basketball game between them would be.

I see stripper monkeys have entered the chat.
