OT: Monthly NBA Thread - June 2015

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, but with our own thread, we won’t detract from what this site is really about: trusting the Red Sox process.

Funny that Ajinca got a pretty decent guarantee only a few days after he was being used as essentially a cautionary tale for Porzingis.

If you pick #4 I'd imagine you hope to do better than a bench guy getting overpaid in a crazy cap environment.

Phoenix has agreed to a five-year, $70 million extension with guard Brandon Knight, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Can't find the tweet now, but think I saw Tristan Thompson was 5yr/$80. That's a lot for a backup.

Kings have about $10 million in cap space, and belief league-wide is that Rondo wants all of it. Still: Who is Sacramento bidding against?
   3004. theboyqueen Posted: July 01, 2015 at 03:02 PM (#4990088)
That Danny Green deal would have looked reasonable 2 years ago. It's less than Iguodala got.

Silliest contract so far, to me, is Brandon Knight. I'm not sure he's even a starting caliber point guard and if any team should understand the superfluity of guys like him its Phoenix.

Cavs, Spurs, Warriors should all be unbelievably good next year.
   3005. theboyqueen Posted: July 01, 2015 at 03:03 PM (#4990093)
There is no reason to offer Rondo more than one year for the minimum.

Really cool for Cleveland. Whether they win or not, that's going to be a lot of fun and excitement all year long.

The Hawks can't pay Millsap that much and get an 8-figure guy, no.
Also, Splitter has a 15% trade kicker - it may or may not have a cap on it. If not, that takes his cap hit to 9.78m this year, I think - but if so (and if it's only 600k as I saw in one place), then it may be 8.8m or so.

This is only true if you don't actually want him to play for you (which would be a reasonable decision, to be sure). Rightly or wrongly, he'd certainly be insulted by that offer, and would go somewhere else -- even if he ended up taking the same money elsewhere (I suspect he gets at least a mid-level type deal, and probably more -- it only takes one, as they say).

Noted.
It is, I'd argue, the only rational choice if they want a championship in the near future.

Wow, the Celtics might get a lottery pick from Dallas next season. It's protected up to the 8th pick and unless Dallas nabs Jordan, they look more likely than not to miss the playoffs. I guess there's a chance they could have a top 8 pick.

3016. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: July 01, 2015 at 03:27 PM (#4990120)
Notwithstanding my skepticism that his skillset is worth $22M/year of Cleveland's cap space specifically, Cleveland is betting their hopes of a championship in the Second LeBron Era on Kevin Love's back. I think it's a sucker's bet. I may very well be wrong.

So offer him 1 year at the minimum, but make sure you're not the first team to do so.

I'm very skeptical of what Cleveland is doing.

They are just doing what Lebron requires them to do in order to keep his services.

Same old story. Pro sports league revolving around Cleveland, San Antonio, and Oakland teams. When will it ever change???

Chandler supposedly joining Phoenix recruiting push for Aldridge. That's a franchise who I always figured should be better at luring FAs than it has been.
   3019. J. Sosa Posted: July 01, 2015 at 03:31 PM (#4990127)
Yeah. Gilbert signed in blood last year. Might have to pay 10s of million in tax but the franchise doubled in value. That was the deal. Pay Bron's guys using Bron's agency.

Is it a better bet than some other star players? No. Is it a better bet than letting him walk and not having cap space to replace him? Quite a bit, I'd say.

Gilbert is worth ~4B, he needs to keep James happy, and whatever else you might say about Gilbert, he does want to be the owner who breaks the Cleveland Hex, and they can. It may not work, but I think it is worth going for for sure.

As to Love, I have heard people say that you can't use him at the 5, but I think you can, in spurts. So, I would just set up a three-big rotation of Love, Mozgov and Thompson, with Varejao in there for energy at times, and you also have the option to go small with James at the 4 if you need to. The other thing is, IF Love and Irving can stay on the floor, that gives you the option to let James play less/sit some games out to keep him fresher for the playoffs, because you still have scoring.

It is indicative of James' gravitational pull that he has, mostly by himself, turned the Cleveland Cavaliers into a Dodgers/Yankees type roster with stars and a humongous payroll.

What's wrong with what Cleveland's doing? They could have won the championship last season had they been healthy. If Gilbert wants to shell out all that money, more power to him. They're favorites to come out of the East until Lebron declines by at least two levels.
   3024. Der-K: at 10% emotional investment Posted: July 01, 2015 at 03:37 PM (#4990137)
Amir is getting 2/24.
Singler 5/~25 w/ OKC.

Agreed.

I would suspend my dislike of singular team names if they changed the name of the team (any Cleveland team; why not the Indians?) to the Cleveland Hex.

Kyle Singler got what? Why would a team want him for 5 years?

Ajinca 4/20.2 to stay in NWO

I really like that deal for New Orleans. They lock up Ajinca for his age 27-30 seasons at an annual salary that effectively will be pocket change after year 1.

I still see a lot of upside with Ajinca based on his incredible wingspan/reach and his effectiveness in limited minutes this past season. He put up above-average numbers across the board, including a 19.9 PER and .159 WS/48, along with a refined offensive game out of the post and from mid range. Sure he mostly played against backups, but he also played more than 3/4 of his minutes with Anthony Davis sitting on the bench rather than drawing attention away from him. I'm surprised no one was willing to offer him the full MLE to see what he could do in a larger role.

The new owners in ATL say they're willing to pay tax. Still looking for a SF to replace Carroll.

Paul Pierce is available.

I didn't think anyone would give Ajinca the MLE, but did think that someone should.
I wonder what Koufos and Asik get.

Tyson terms: 4/52.

On Singler, I've got a longstanding pet theory that decent wings are harder to find than people think / we overestimate the replacement level at that position.

   3036. spivey Posted: July 01, 2015 at 04:22 PM (#4990200)
Zeth, Cleveland is going for broke because they have to. The money they gave Love and Thompson could not have been given to other random FAs.

The team doesn't fit as well as is ideal for the amount of talent they have, but a second year with the core together should help and they'll remain massive favorites in the East.

i think teams just give too much money to proven players on the downside of their career, instead of giving opportunities to younger ones.

how many 23-27 year olds are there in the Dleague who are 6'5 to 6'9, athletic and shooting 40% from beyond the arc? some of them are gonna suck and flame out (chris johnson, hello), but others are gonna stick if you give them an opportunity (robert covington, hollis thompson, hello). the problem is that teams aren't giving them the opportunity.

LaMarcus Aldridge will not be joining the Lakers, The Times has learned. They were a 50-50 choice but he disliked bball part of presentation

Not surprising. They may be a lot more desirable for FAs if Russell has a good rookie season.

Yeah, and that's fair, and if this actually does manage to bring in Aldridge it's worth it, but otherwise I'd rather just let Len develop.

A bit of a bummer, but there wasn't a reasonable expectation that LMA was coming to the Lakers, not at his career point. Like I said a couple of days ago,
The Lakers need to see if Russell can play, if Randle can play, if Clarkson can play. If they can, then the Lakers can start thinking of what to put around them. If not, they need to see about finding other foundational players.

Some D-League guys that fit this profile: Jabari Brown, Jarell Eddie, DJ Seeley, Andre Dawkins, Larry Owens, Vander Blue, Diante Garrett, Jonathon Simmons

Guys like Omri Casspi and Justin Holiday are guys in the league that would be much cheaper alternatives to a dude like Singler.
