No human is actually giving Conley #### about this, I hope?

#201 - I haven't heard of any. The team and all teammates and fans that I've seen post about it are all in complete agreement and support with his decision. I mean, as a fan it kinda sucks for selfish reasons, but I think everyone understands and admits that they'd have done the exact same thing. There's literally nothing that would've kept me from the birth of any of my kids.
There will be others in the same boat. I thought I read somewhere that Gridlock Hempfest and his wife are expecting a child in August too.

Yeah it probably depends how you're defining "human," but I gotta think some talk radio/Barstool types are not happy about it.

Not much time to get predictions in, I'll start (and probably screw up the seeding, someone yell at me if so):
West:
Lakers over Blazers 4-1
Clippers over Mavs 4-1
Nuggets over Jazz 4-2
Thunder over Rockets 4-2
Lakers over Thunder 4-1
Clippers over Nuggets 4-2
Clippers over Lakers 4-2
East:
Bucks over Magic 4-0
Raptors over Nets 4-0
Celtics over Sixers 4-3
Heat over Pacers 4-2
Bucks over Heat 4-1
Celtics over Raptors 4-3
Bucks over Celtics 4-2
Finals: Clippers over Bucks 4-1

Lakers (in 5), Clippers (in 5), Jazz (in 7), Rockets (in 6).
Lakers (in 6), Clippers (in 5).
Clippers in 6.
Bucks (in 4), Raptors (in 5), Celtics (in 6), Heat (in 5).
Bucks (in 5), Raptors (in 7).
Bucks in 6.
I want to believe in the Bucks obviously, but until Bud can prove that he can match Nick Nurse I have to think Toronto has the edge. Raptors don't have Giannis but has a really deep team and everyone plays defense.

Re: Conley's departure and people's reactions to it, Gordon Hayward and his wife are expecting another kid, and he'll be leaving the bubble, too -- probably in the second round? It's not at all out of the question that his absence is the difference between winning and losing against Toronto. And I obviously have zero problem with his decision. But I suspect some Boston fans (and sports-radio hosts) ...

Now that I see which uniforms Denver is playing in, I'm changing my pick to them sweeping their way to the title.

They have a 0.0% chance of winning the title, but if Embiid decides to play hard for at least 4 games and Harris or a couple of their other random overpaid guys have a game or two they could easily win a round. The Celtics are a significantly better team but Embiid is a huge matchup advantage.

how is it possible that my optimism about the sixers has not washed off onto anyone else in this thread?
Quoted, so everyone else on the thread can read this.
The last time the Bulls won the draft lottery was on May 20, 2008. Then, too, they were without a head coach, having fired Scott Skiles on Christmas Eve, 2007, and axed interim coach... Jim Boylan on April 17, 2008. VDN was hired in June.

Anyway, as I don't currently pay as much attention as I should to the NBA, the only comment I will offer in terms of predictions is that I expect the Raptors to get to the ECF, and then lose to Milwaukee in 6 or 7.

I am a bit surprised that the Bucks are thought to be able to beat the Raptors by so many here. I expected more of a divided set of forecasts (and for good reason)

Hell of a first game here between Denver and Utah.

Every year, so many of these playoff games are decided by who can score against good defense in the half court. Late in game one, it has been Mitchell. Jokic is getting good shots for his team and they're not going down.

Of course I missed a game that goes to overtime, and one that featured the first 50 pt performance by a Jazz player in 20 years. Mitchell's 51+ already breaks Malone's franchise playoff record of 50.
Mitchell went for an efficient 57, and the Jazz were somehow worse in his minutes (-11) than overall (-10).

Posted: August 17, 2020 at 04:22 PM (#5970123)
Dammit. Maybe it's best I missed that OT period, though. The play by play shows Utah had 4 turnovers in their first 5 possessions. Ugh.
Mitchell's 57 the highest by a Jazz player since Malone had 61 against the Bucks in 1990 though. Still...dammit.

Mitchell was unreal, but it's notable that Denver's fortunes turned around late in the 4th and into OT when they took out MPJ and Utah couldn't hunt him defensively.

Apparently Mitchell is the youngest to score 50 in a playoff game since MJ in 1986. It was also the 3rd highest postseason points total in history, behind MJ's famous 63 vs Boston in 1986 and Elgin Baylor's 61 vs Boston in 1962.
at some point during this series, brett stephen is going to get caught giving his unvarnished opinion of brad browns. it's going to be short, and it's going to be vicious.
yeah, but the moderators moved over to their own site. There's usually one pop-up when you first click on a game but otherwise I've had no trouble with it.

okay so something that just jumped out at me is that brad stephens spends a lot of effort yelling at his players to get them into his desired positioning on offense early in the shot clock. once the action gets going he kinda lays back, but for the first 10-ish seconds, he's just yelling and jumping and waving to get his guys to move.
gordially hinvited twists his ankle again. didn't look overly bad, but with his history...

right. there are no buttons left to press here.
the sixers paid tobias harris to be a guy who takes shots and makes shots. he does neither of those things. now to be fair, he didn't do those things outside of philadelphia, but for ##### sake, how? why? what?
there is one thing tobias harris actually does much better than jimmy butler: he's a very good loser. that sixers locker room is gonna be well-lubricated after this. we're not gonna have a problem with any of that caring too much bullshit.
Boston's Gordon Hayward will undergo an MRI on his sprained right ankle tonight, sources tell @malika_andrews and me. He left the Game 1 victory over Philadelphia limping in the fourth quarter.
Isn't the obvious thing to do to go Shake/Richardson/Thybulle/Harris/Embiid and never have Horford and Embiid share the court?
embiid is playing 40 minutes per game, and horford is not making 110 ####### million ####### dollars to play 8 minutes in a playoff game.
also, as obvious as that "obvious" lineup is, they only played 10 minutes together all season, 2 of the players are rookies and none of them are PGs. i'm not gonna crown that until they carry the sixers into round 2.

Clippers on a 16-5 run since Porzingis was ejected, turning a five-point deficit into a six-point advantage.
Adam Lauridsen @GSWFastBreak
All I want this off-season is for someone to hire Mark Jackson for a job other than announcing NBA basketball games.
Michael Lee @MrMichaelLee
I hope the NBA sends a memo to these refs to remind them that guys have to do something truly egregious to get elected from emotionally-charged playoff games. Dudes shouldn't get T'd up for hollering "BS!" Kristap Porzingis shouldn't have been tossed for a passionate reaction
TJ McBride @TJMcBrideNBA
I’ve never seen every aspect of the NBA community agree on anything, but somehow everyone agrees that ejection of Kristaps was bullshit.
David Hardisty @clutchfans
If the standard of technicals and ejections we just saw with Kristaps Porzingis was applied to Draymond Green, that man would've never finished a playoff game.
Vincent Goodwill @VinceGoodwill
I once saw Rasheed Wallace ejected for looking at a ref. Saw Tim Duncan ejected for laughing. This is in the same class of nonsense
i'm a thybulle fan but you can ignore him on offense now; the sixers are in a tough spot.
porzingis earned his ejection; that was his fault, not the refs.

I saw Chuck Daly get ejected from a game in Detroit (!) on the night they retired Vinnie Johnson's number.
Chuck's hearing wasn't great, and he was confused - not angry - but a foul call. so he inquired.
but ref Bennett Salvatore took it as "guff," so Chuck was in the locker room before halftime.
Joey Crawford once came thisclose during a playoff game to ejecting radio announcer Howard David - who was sitting courtside and thus within earshot - for questioning a Crawford call. neither party appeared certain that he could do that, though.
Hayward's ankle has a grade 3 sprain (complete tear of affected ligaments). Announced timeline of 4 weeks, which seems pretty optimistic. ####.
This would have him out through at least the first two rounds, though given how much the Celtics rely on their top 6 players, his loss makes it less likely they advance that far (how much less likely remains to be seen—I'm not totally pissing my pants just yet, but I'm considering it).
I know this isn't a universally-held opinion, but I really do think a fully-healthy Celtics squad is a real contender this year. We may not get the chance to see if that's true.

This Raptors-Nets game looks like it won't be quite as exciting.
In his defense, by the end it was extremely hard for him to run all the way past the halfcourt line in just 8 seconds.
I mean he’s still got something in there, you see glimpses.
