I don't blame Butler for wanting to force his way out of town* but, man oh man, he does not come off looking good here. Thibs/Hayden look bad. Taylor looks bad. Everything is bad.
* i subscribe to the he wants a max offer that the wolves won't offer him camp, fwiw.
A lot of Minnesota players left Timberwolves practice today energized by Butler's performance, mesmerized with him taking end-of-the-bench players and running the table on the regulars, sources said. At the end, he marched out like if a mic drop. Butler delivered a tour de force.
If the players think that, today's even worse for the Wolves and Thibs that I thought possible.
I guess Jimmy realized he can't just no-show without losing money/risking his FA, so he's doing his best to try and speed up the trade and make sure the team tells him to stay away. Brilliant.
I think the thing that has been fascinating me about this TWolves soap opera is how it confirms what we thought about everyone involved. Jimmy Buckets is a very good basketball player and also an #######. Thibs is willing to burn down the world to get the defense he wants. KAT and Wiggins are talented paper tigers. (KAT may evolve beyond this; Wiggins almost certainly will not) Glen Taylor is meddling but incompetent. My goodness.

Butler yelled at Layden that he hated Rose in Chicago and why the hell was he there? Oh my.
A three-step, half-baked theory on how the Wolves might best resolve this:
1) Fire Thibs
2) Make Butler coach
3) Make KAT GM but forbid trading Butler.
Butler and KAT will have to work together, and have incentive to stick around. Wiggins might get so frustrated with it that he asks out, or retires to walk the Canadian wilds. What could go wrong?!?
The Clips should buyout Wes Johnson (only a slight giveback) who should then sign with Houston.

They talked about this on Dunc'd On last week. He could have gotten near his max renegotiate after the trade, before they signed Teague and Gibson.

The Butler stuff today has been amazing. This is pretty ####### wild and doesn't help his trade value, but makes me both like him and think he's crazy and questionable to build around. I still think he should get the max.
After today's events I kinda think this whole thing was less about Butler wanting paid and more about Butler really sincerely hates Wiggins and KAT.

Butler’s interview with Rachel Nichols I believed him when he said he likes the players. I think he’s so emotional and competitive that they may not like him. Also he wants the max.
I was very wrong about Paul/Harden, so with that caveat included, I'm not sure Harden/Paul/Butler works on offense.
There are very few situations in the NBA in which awesome talent doesn't work. If Houston actually gets Butler, I am confident that they will win 60 or so games and be good enough to really worry Golden State again.

I think people forget how good they were when Butler played, but they were 37-22 IIRC, which is a 51 win pace. Throw in a fair amount of roster changes last year they were dealing with, they were in the West, with legitimate stars. I think they are a 50+ win team, more than that if Wiggins would even become average. I think with any stable leadership (and a max contract for Butler) they'd be considered in that second or third tier of outside contenders.
Yep. If I ran Minnesota, I would consider simply not trading Butler. Easy to say from the outside, but with Butler, Minnesota is good.

The fact that Butler showed up, said in the Nichols interview he was showing up today too - this seems to be much more of a viable plan. It seems like they're strongly considering this.
Said before, will say again, they should be trying to trade Wiggins instead. If possible they should move Wiggins for a big expiring contract or two, then they can max out Butler, and with a lot more ball to go around offensively and Butler paid maybe, maybe, he and KAT can patch it up. Then Minnesota has a path to contending in the next few years. Trade Butler for 20 cents on the dollar and keep Wiggins, and they don't.
Of course I have no idea whether there's a sucker out there willing to take Wiggins' contract who also has the big expiring(s) Minnesota would need back. But there could be. It should at least be considered.
That's also assuming Butler would actually be willing to play in Minnesota (as opposed to L.A. or New York or Miami) as long as he gets paid, which we don't know, but we haven't definitively heard he isn't, either.

The Timberwolves canceled their previously scheduled practice for today, which means no media availability.
Jimmy is trying to force their hand. They've said all along Thibs wants to keep him, but if Butler is going to do everything he can to completely undermine and ruin the team from within, they really will have to trade him. At least, that's what he hopes.
In other news, the Bulls are bringing jabari off the bench, even with markkanen out.
Bulls played their best preseason game yet - offense and defense - and Parker left after the game without talking to reporters. Also, reporters are saying Hoiberg is already considering scrapping any attempts to play Jabari at SF. Another great signing!
I'm not familiar with the NBA's rules about this kind of thing, but is there a point at which the Timberwolves can just suspend him for Conduct Detrimental to the Team or whatever?
I mean obviously, rationally, if your options are trade him for whatever pupu platter you can get or suspend him and do nothing, rationally you choose the former. But this situation might spin beyond the reach of rationality.
The Bulls are an example of a team I would call and see if they might be interested in taking Wiggins' contract.

Lopez (expiring) and Asik (1 more year $11mil; he's not playing but is an ex-ThibsBull) works. Parker can't be traded until 12/15, but him plus some small contract (Valentine or Blakenly, or even Holliday) would work.
I'm only talking about under the cap, not whether I'd be interested in that or how terrible it would be to reunite LaVine and Wiggins.

On the first day of practice in Cleveland in 2014, James halted the proceedings and took everyone into the locker room to run a players-only meeting where he described the role each player on the team would be expected to play. Coach David Blatt waited on the practice court for James to dismiss the team.
This piece is really about Jeannie Buss and Lebron, but this jumped out at me:
There was a non-fictional inspiration fueling her decision-making process, too, one that was far more personal for Jeanie: Her ex-fiance’ and former Lakers coach, Phil Jackson, who won five of his record 11 titles with Bryant at his side. Jeanie had learned from Jackson’s mistakes in New York, where he took that job as the head of the Knicks front office in March of 2014 and was fired three years later after, as she saw it, he fell prey to the internal politics that have plagued that franchise for decades.
“He should’ve made sure (to control) who was surrounding him, because the people close to you will take the knife and put it in your back,” she continued. “And so, I had not thought of it that way (with the Lakers situation). I was trying to do the least amount of change.”
Yeah, it was the internal politics that did him in there. Totally.

This story is crazier every day:
Shams Charania @ShamsCharania
Timberwolves All-Star Jimmy Butler called a players-only meeting today, airing his feelings toward situation and management, per league sources. Butler expressed to players he would compete with them, as signs pointing to him staying with the franchise into the regular season.
Way too late with this reply, but whatever, I've been busy.
TOR and BOS are more experienced than the sixers and they should be better, but simmons and embiid are the only unicorns that would play in either series.
I know the term "unicorn" means whatever its user wants it to mean, but by the sort-of-standard definition of "able to handle traditional big man duties, especially anchor a defense as a center, and able to handle traditional guard duties on offense, especially three point shooting", how does Al Horford not qualify? The term is generally only used with recent draft picks, but that's just sloppy thinking.
I'm definitely coming from a contrarian place here—in actual usage, "unicorn" is more about how a player makes you feel than about how they play, and I only actually care in the most petty, homeric ways—but still, show me the lie: http://bkref.com/tiny/BX2lX

EDIT: And they came and listened???
This is from yesterday. AFTER THE PRACTICE:
Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA
Neither Towns nor Wiggins confronted Butler. Wiggins dapped him up as he left. Towns delivered a message to the team that seemed empty.
Right, and then he trashed them both openly in that ESPN interview:
Butler: Everybody has to be honest, again, but everybody has to have winning as their No. 1 priority. Everybody [should feel that] winning is all that we’re worried about.
Nichols: Did you feel that that wasn’t the case with everyone?
Butler: Yeah. It was. It is. And I think that’s the part that everybody doesn’t see. But I’m gonna be honest. I’m not gonna say no names, but imma be honest. If your No. 1 priority isn’t winning, an people can tell? That’s the battle. Now, there’s a problem between people because that guy’s No. 1 priority is winning and that guy’s isn’t. Of course they’re gonna clash, like, ‘I’m doing this for the team. Are you?’ ‘Ehh.’ Exactly. So, that’s where the disconnect is.
Butler: “KAT. KAT came at me. We’re up in practice and he said, “Anybody can get this work!” I said, “Do it to me.” That’s all that I said. I said, “Every time I get switched out onto you, you pass it.” I’m a competitor, I’m in here talking, come at me. If you score on me, I’m gonna tap you on your butt. You got the best of me -- but you got to do it every time.”
Butler: Who’s the most talented player on our team? KAT. Who’s the most god-gifted player on our team? Wigs. Wigs got the longest arms, the biggest hands, can jump the highest, can run the fastest. But like who plays the hardest? Me. I play hard. I play really hard. I put my body on the line every damn practice. Every day in the games. That’s my passion. That’s how I give to the game. That’s how I give to you guys.
After all that, they're still there listening? Today. On an unscheduled off day.
Shams Charania @ShamsCharania 52m52 minutes ago
Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium: Several players spoke up in players-only meeting, but Butler led it, made known his issues with management. His message was similar to one he displayed Wednesday: I run this. He's far too competitive to sit real games.
Word is he beat KAT/Wiggins/Taj/Rose/Teague with Deng/Nunnally/Terrell/TFTIO. They keep coming back for more.
Jimmy Butler confirmed to @Rachel__Nichols that he held a players-only meeting with Timberwolves players on Thursday, a day after he reported to the team for his first practice.

I have no idea what is going on either, but I think we can be pretty confident that Minnesota has got spectacularly incompetent management all the way up and down. How the hell did it get to this?

Keep my name out of your mouth. You always talk about me. If you want this money suit up then.
(It was just a thread about how difficult it would be for the Wolves to get far enough under the cap to do the renegotiate and extend that Butler wanted.)
The following day, Lakers scout and former teammate Brian Shaw mediated between a furious O'Neal and Bryant. Shaw reprimanded O'Neal for yelling "Pay me" at Buss after dunking during a preseason game
.
2002-03:
O'Neal was sidelined with hallux rigidus, a degenerative arthritis in his toe.[61] O'Neal could have had surgery on his toe early in the summer (which would have allowed him to return to playing sooner), but he decided to wait and have the surgery performed not long before the Lakers' pre-season training camp began. He said, "I got hurt on company time, so I’ll rehab on company time."[62]
"Shaq-Kobe Feud" has its own Wiki page. I am gathering data for the "Der-K-Aberg Feud" page and will be contacting ESPN about a 30-for-30.
If Minnesota fans can detach and be relaxed about it, then they are better fans than I was/am. By the time O'Neal and Bryant starting dumping on each other in public for real, they had put three banners on the wall at Staples. Minnesota has not even won a playoff series with Towns and Butler, and this is going on. So if I rooted for Minnesota, I would be pretty frustrated by this.
OTOH, this could all sort of blow over and Minnesota could end up keeping Butler and having a good year. But again, that is easy to say from my keyboard in SoCal. Actually playing with Butler and being around him all the time after this...very different, obviously.

And how can anyone NOT love the Lakers?
EDIT: And they came and listened???
First Thibs, then aberg, now you? Leave me and Jimmy alone.
This is from yesterday. AFTER THE PRACTICE:
After all that, they're still there listening? Today. On an unscheduled off day.
Word is he beat KAT/Wiggins/Taj/Rose/Teague with Deng/Nunnally/Terrell/TFTIO. They keep coming back for more.
I mean, in a six minute scrimmage at the end of practice. But still.
Also
EDIT: Or maybe he just called in Wiggins and Towns to further berate them?
hehehe
I feel bad for the few Wolves fans I know (mostly in this thread) but for the uninvested they sure are entertaining right now!
No worries, one some level it is pretty entertaining to us as well. I mean sports is just entertainment, right?
It would be nice if there was some let-up, from McHale to Kahn to Flip dying to this. But you're right that it's good theater.
(It was just a thread about how difficult it would be for the Wolves to get far enough under the cap to do the renegotiate and extend that Butler wanted.)
"Sir, this is an Arby's."
Nah.

"Shaq-Kobe Feud" has its own Wiki page. I am gathering data for the "Der-K-Aberg Feud" page and will be contacting ESPN about a 30-for-30.
OTOH, this could all sort of blow over and Minnesota could end up keeping Butler and having a good year. But again, that is easy to say from my keyboard in SoCal. Actually playing with Butler and being around him all the time after this...very different, obviously.
This makes me happy.
I'm going to be shocked if Thibs makes it through the year.
If that one doesn't work, try this one.
