OT - NBA thread (Playoffs through off-season)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and this one only cares about the NBA thread and the Cubs so I have no idea what the rest of the website cares about.

I think this would be a terrible fit:
Brian T. Smith @ChronBrianSmith
The name at top of #Rockets’ wish list as free agency approaches: Jimmy Butler.
Harden, Paul and Butler on same team next season, if Rockets can convince Butler to call Toyota Center his new NBA home.

That seems like the sort of trio that would eventually result in an in-game brawl amongst themselves.

We got one right:
Memphis is trading franchise star Mike Conley Jr. to Utah, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

   4109. jmurph Posted: June 19, 2019 at 11:53 AM (#5853563)
The details:
Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
Memphis has traded guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver and Jae Crowder, the 23rd pick in Thursday's Draft and a future first-round pick, league sources tell ESPN.
   4110. The Mighty Quintana Posted: June 19, 2019 at 11:56 AM (#5853564)
Boston Celtics select Dylan Windler, F, Belmont

He and Chuma will be in range when they get off the bus.
   4111. jmurph Posted: June 19, 2019 at 11:56 AM (#5853565)
And more:
Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
The Jazz will send a protected 2020 first-round pick to the Grizzlies, league sources tell ESPN. That pick will convey as a late-lottery pick in 2020 or 2021, or become a lightly-protected pick from 2022-'24. Deal complete on July 6.

Conley AND we get to keep Favors? :-D

Now they just need to bring in a shooting stretch 4 type to plug into Crowder's role (one that can actually shoot). Brogdon or Bogdanovic or Mirotic or Portis or...?
   4114. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: June 19, 2019 at 12:00 PM (#5853568)
That shaves a lot of money for Memphis doesn't it?

Korver $3.4 to go away, Crowder $7.8, Allen $2.4, Pick 23 (guess) $2.4, TOTAL $16M

Conley makes $32M next year
4115. TFTIO is building his own mealworm farm Posted: June 19, 2019 at 12:01 PM (#5853569)

Some outside scoring and some luck with health and they're right there among the top contenders in the West.

Booey, how much money do they have to sign someone after this?

Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42

Because of cap implications (making the money work), the Mike Conley Jr. trade will need to be completed on July 6. Utah will have to take back Conley Jr. with room.
   4118. Booey Posted: June 19, 2019 at 12:05 PM (#5853572)
Apparently I don't understand how salary matching works, since that trade package doesn't even seem close to matching up, but whatever. ;-)

Very excited about this, obviously, but my one worry is about team chemistry. As we're seeing with the Rockets and Celtics, it does seem to matter, and the Jazz of the last couple seasons seemed to have genuinely great chemistry, with Crowder and Rubio being two of the big "clubhouse guys". Hope the camaraderie can continue unchanged without them.

Can the Jazz get under the cap with Favors on their roster? Because otherwise it looks like they're waiving him to make this deal work.

Edit: the Jazz without any of these players and no hold for Rubio are like $31.8 million under the cap, and the capulator says they're $32.58 under if they waive Georges Niang. Conley's salary is $32.51.

Not much, but they still have Favors as trade bait if absolutely necessary (I hope it's not). Also all of their exceptions.

How much do we expect Mirotic or Portis to command on the open market? Niko might have to settle for a pay cut after his struggles in the playoffs, no?

They're using cap space; salaries don't have to match if you can absorb the contract without going over the cap.

In this deal, Utah will not need to waive Derrick Favors to create cap flexibility.

Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42 4m4 minutes ago

The Utah trade follows the blueprint on how this team has been built- the draft and trades. The Jazz could have had up to $33M in room but elected to bypass and free agency for a Conley deal.

That's what I was wondering/thinking. So yeah, just exceptions. Not sure that gets them someone on Booey's wishlist.
   4130. JJ1986 Posted: June 19, 2019 at 12:29 PM (#5853585)

That trade seems good for the Grizzlies, Jazz, and Celtics.

Memphis has only Slo-Mo signed beyond next year (though obviously you'd expect Morant and JJJ to be on the team). They are going to have a LOT of money available in 2020-21, especially since they don't have much room this offseason.

Maybe, but I am in the winning leads to chemistry camp, rather than the opposite. I think Boston and Houston started having that kind of trouble because their teams were not as good as expected, not the other way around.

Conley to Utah obviously makes sense. Supposedly Indiana wants Rubio, and Lakers fans are talking about Collison if the Lakers miss on Butler and Walker.

FA: I am not convinced that anybody outside of the guys themselves and people in their circles know where they are going yet, and I think it is possible that one or more of Durant, Irving, Butler and Leonard have yet to decide.

Love this trade for Memphis. They save a ton of money, they get a very useful player in Crowder, they get a future pick? All good things.

Love this trade for Utah. Compete while you can. The ground beneath is always shifting, and the "we'll compete next year" approach often guarantees you won't.

I have to think that Utah (and others) are looking at the GS injuries and the Houston drama and thinking this might be their chance.

With the 24th pick, the Washington Wizards select Nic Claxton, F/C, Georgia. There are a few guys left who I really like, so it was a tough call. Hoping one of the others makes it down to #32. I'll write up the Wizards picks together later.

There's no question that teams are thinking this. Whatever happens in GSW, we know for sure they won't have Durant and Thompson for much or all of next season, which means every team that got even a sniff the last two seasons — Utah, Houston, Denver, Portland, the Clippers — they're all seeing obstacle that had been in their way the last half-decade is gone. Try to win! Try to win now!

My personal belief is that any team that isn't fully rebuilding should be trying to win now. Between free agency and the salary cap, it's just impossible to plan too far ahead. Mice and men, and all that.

I mean, the Raptors won a title (the Raptors won a title?!?) by being good, and well run, and striking when an opportunity to get a great player arose. That's not a model that the Hinkie style Process is compatible with. So, maybe people are starting to realize that there is more than one road to the title, not just stylistically, but also strategically.

If the Warriors bring back Klay and Durant, it's possible that one or both will be on the court in time for the playoffs. They certainly aren't the overwhelming favorites that they've been the last four years, but they aren't even close to being out of the picture.

Are the Warriors going to ask Steph Curry to carry a 2016-2017 Russell Westbrook load next year? Even if they suck it up and throw huge dollars at Durant and Thompson, those guys are going to be out most - if not all - of the season. Doesn't that basically leave them with Curry, Green and a bunch of nobodies? Who else is making shots on that team, especially if Cousins leaves? Is there a viable strategy for them beyond "Steph Curry goes thermonuclear every night?"

Agreed. In the age of load management, 32 minutes per game for about 70-75 games sounds right. As long as they get in, I think they will feel like they have a puncher's chance with Klay probably on the way back in that time frame.

Klay's dad also posted something that strongly implied Klay was coming back, and there's at least some smoke that KD will be coming with him.

Just spoke with Klay Thompson's father, Mychal, who said there's "no question" Klay will re-sign with the Warriors. Golden State is expected to still offer him a full five-year maximum deal.

Given the disaster that the finals turned into for them in terms of health, I find it difficult to believe they'll be willing to risk Klay making his first post-injury appearances in the playoffs.

The Rockets recently explored trading Chris Paul into New York’s cap space, but the Knicks refused, according to league sources.

That's an interesting phrasing:

Rockets: We're just going to leave Chris Paul here in your cap space for a bit. Can you watch him for us?

Knicks: Sorry, can't. We're busy preparing a max contract extension for Luke Kornet.

Atlanta selects Matisse Thybulle, g/f, Washington. I had considered him with my last pick (had Windler behind him). It’s a gamble, he’s going from zone to man to man and is not good at a lot of things. But - I think he’ll learn to hit open threes consistently, can help in transition, and the defensive ceiling is obvious.

Cleveland/Harlond on the clock.

I love this. If Conley is close to what he was this past season, Jazz might be the best team in the West. I'm hopeful that Donovan was already going to take a step forward, and with Conley on the team I really hope his efficiency and playmaking take a bigger jump than I expected.

I like Jae, Korver, and Rubio, but Jae is a bad shooter and not much better than average at anything. That's not a bad player for his salary, but I think they can get close to what he gave them even with just the exceptions they have. Korver might actually be a bit harder to lose since they won't get anyone who can shoot on the move like him, but he's old and can barely play in the postseason anyway. I hope Rubio can find a good team with good shooting that needs a playmaking PG.

The 2nd draft pick is worrisome, and why I think this is also a really good trade for the Grizzlies. But with the Warriors no longer looking that good (at least for the upcoming season) plus Houston being a mess, the Jazz had to go for it.

Oklahoma City has increased its efforts this afternoon to shed salary along with the No. 21 pick en route to dodging luxury tax, league sources say. Steven Adams, Andre Roberson, Dennis Schroeder all very available at the moment.

Miami HEAT @MiamiHEAT 4m4 minutes ago

OFFICIAL: The Miami HEAT have acquired a second-round pick (#44 overall) in the 2019 #NBADraft from Atlanta in exchange for a future conditional second-round pick and cash considerations. The pick originally belonged to Charlotte and was acquired by Atlanta in a previous trade.

There's got to be a pretty robust market for Adams, right?
   4161. aberg Posted: June 19, 2019 at 05:29 PM (#5853770)
Here are a few things I feel pretty confident about a day before the draft.

1. The top 3 picks will go as scripted. Zion to NO, Ja to MEM, RJ to NYK.

2. Pelicans will trade the 4th pick to someone who will take Garland. I think the return will be another top 10 pick and a protected future first.

3. The Wolves will trade the 11th pick, probably to unload bad money.

Not really a prediction, but I have seen so many mocks that have Coby 7th to CHI and Reddish 8th to ATL that I have internally started to assume that those are true. Probably would mean Hunter and Culver at 5/6.

He's got 2/52 left, it looks like, so he's no bargain, but plenty good enough that a number of teams could use him. More than anything, I'm not sure how good OKC could be without him as their rim protector next year. Who is their starting center? Nerlens Noel? Markieff Morris?

I'm scared that will be the Bulls. Just like I said in our mock, the Bulls need to just collect assets, and not trade future ones. I think either Garland or White will be there for them if they're patient.

Mavs Draft
@MavsDraft

Shams is being interviewed on NBA XM Radio and just dropped a shortlist of the favorites for Horford and the 4 teams he listed were lakers and mavs, then a pause to list Philadelphia and Houston.
Giggity!
   4168. Booey Posted: June 19, 2019 at 08:40 PM (#5853822)
#4167 - Obviously you don't turn down a player of Horford's caliber, but wouldn't the Lakers money be better spent looking for guards instead? With LBJ, Davis, and Kuzma, bigs are basically all they've got already.
4169. rr: calming the thread down with my arms Posted: June 19, 2019 at 08:48 PM (#5853823)
Yeah, I would not be that excited about Horford, although he is a good player. If they are going to spend big money on a guy 30 or over, I would rather have Butler, if he is in play.
   4170. King Mekong Posted: June 19, 2019 at 08:59 PM (#5853827)

Oh, for sure, sign me up for Leonard or Butler or Irving or Walker. I'm just happy that there's a real indicator that stars want to come play with Lebron and AD. It's becoming apparent that Pelinka didn't cross all his t's or dot all his i's when he made the deal with NO, and player sentiment may be a more necessary-than-useful tug if the Lakers are going to make the most of this next season.
4172. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 19, 2019 at 09:10 PM (#5853832)
Also, 538 says Zion's best comp is ... Jahlil Okafor.

(They actually don't, but it's awesome clickbait. Zion doesn't have a remotely useful comparison.)
4173. rr: calming the thread down with my arms Posted: June 19, 2019 at 09:16 PM (#5853840)
Pelinka obviously deserves serious scrutiny, and he will get it. But it is also worth noting that Deng will cost them 5M a year through 2022, after the Stretch.

I have always liked Horford and would enjoy rooting for him, but he is not my first choice.
   4174. JC in DC Posted: June 19, 2019 at 09:20 PM (#5853843)
IDK, I think Horford makes a lot of sense for LA: low-maintenance, professional, adult, ballplayer, very good team defender, good distributor from the high post, doesn't need shots to be happy. I've always had the impression he a strong "glue-guy" that adds more than meets the eye. You can find 25mpg for that easy on that team.
4175. rr: calming the thread down with my arms Posted: June 19, 2019 at 09:22 PM (#5853845)
If Ball were still on the roster, I might agree. But they literally have no guards under contract except Isaac Bonga.

Fair enough, rr. They're free to choose a PG off the Knicks. We have about 11 development league-caliber PGs on our roster.

mike f and Brooklyn on the clock.

1. New Orleans – sardonic - Zion Williamson, F, Duke
2. Memphis – Willard Baseball - Ja Morant, G, Murray State
3. New York – JC and NJ - RJ Barrett, F, Duke
4. New Orleans (from LAL) - sardonic - Jarrett Culver, G Texas Tech
5. Cleveland - Harlond - DeAndre Hunter, F, UVA
6. Phoenix – Oriole Tragic - Coby White, PG, UNC
7. Chicago - Moses - Darius Garland, G, Vanderbilt
8. Atlanta - Der-K - Cam Reddish, F, Duke
9. Indiana – JJ - Brandon Clarke, F/C, Gonzaga
10. Atlanta - Der-K - Bol Bol, C, Oregon
11. Minnesota - aberg - Nickeil Alexander-Walker, G, Virginia Tech
12. Charlotte - Fridas Boss - Sekou Doumbouya, F, Limoges CSP
13. Miami – Mouse – Jaxson Hayes, C, Texas
14. Boston – The Mighty Quintana - Romeo Langford, G, Indiana
15. Detroit - Crosseyed and Painless - Grant Williams, F, UT
16. New Orleans (from ORL) – sardonic - Goga Bitadze, C, Mega Bemax
17. New Orleans (from ATL via WAS) - sardonic - Rui Hachimura, F, Gonzaga
18. Atlanta (from IND) – Der-K - Nassir Little, F, UNC
19. San Antonio – Quaker - P.J. Washington, F, Kentucky
20. Boston – The Mighty Quintana - Chuma Okeke, F/G, Auburn
21. Oklahoma City – Thok - Cameron Johnson, F, UNC
22. Boston – The Mighty Quintana - Dylan Windler, F, Belmont
23. Memphis (from UTA) – Willard Baseball - Tyler Herro, G, Kentucky
24. Washington (from PHI via WAS) – Dandy Little Glove Man - Nic Claxton, F/C, Georgia
25. Atlanta – Der-K - Matisse Thybulle, G, Washington
26. Cleveland - Harlond - Kevin Porter Jr., G, USC
27. Brooklyn – mike f
28. Golden State - sardonic
29. San Antonio – Quaker
30. Milwaukee – Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw

I don't want to hold things up, so I'll go ahead and take Kevin Porter Jr. I really wanted Thybulle. Cleveland was worst in league defending the three (and the two!) last season, and Hunter and Thybulle would have helped there. Not to be, however (I blame you aberg), so I'm going for a guy with big bust potential, but also big breakout potential if he matures.

The Nets take Keldon Johnson. I was debating between Porter and Johnson, and Harlond made the decision for me. No real reason, just liked him the best from looking at various mock drafts.

Love the trade for Memphis
Think I like it for utah

I'm a little surprised at how many people seem to like the trade for Utah.

As recently as the all star break, Conley didn't pass the Nene test--no one would take him at his current contract. I mean, Utah could have probably gotten Chris Paul without paying any picks, just taking him into space.

Is Mike Conley at 32 with 3 more years at 30 million a year really the guy you want to give up picks for?

Sort of similarly, if you are willing to do this deal in the offseason, why weren't you willing to do it at the deadline?
   4182. Harlond Posted: June 19, 2019 at 10:26 PM (#5853874)

No need to be wild, just include Thybulle. Or take Love or Thompson or Smith or Clarkson.;)
   4183. Der-K: at 10% emotional investment Posted: June 19, 2019 at 10:29 PM (#5853876)
The Warriors hadn't imploded yet and Conley had a nice second half.
By RPM (not an end all, be all) he was 9th among PG last year... coming out off a banged up 17-18, it wasn't clear that he could go back to those heights.
I worry that he's going to be 32 next year and that's a LOT of money, but the Jazz don't seem confident that they can land big name PGs and they have a small, but non-zero, shot in the West now after this move.
That second draft pick has a chance to really pay off for Memphis if things go right.
--
One of the ideas included Clarkson, Harlond! We each have a handful of bad contracts and I thought a bad contract + pick = slightly less bad contract deal could work (especially since I need point guards and three of your bad deals involve them). I just didn't come up with one that I thought made sense for both of us.
   4184. Booey Posted: June 19, 2019 at 10:39 PM (#5853879)
But they literally have no guards under contract except Isaac Bonga.

Fake Jazz offer Dante Exum for Kyle Kuzma. :-D

I'm a little surprised at how many people seem to like the trade for Utah.

Let's be realistic - they never had a shot at Kyrie or Kemba instead. Can you think of a better way for the Jazz to spend their money? Kawhi and Butler aren't walking through that door. KD and Klay aren't hobbling through that door.

Is Mike Conley at 32 with 3 more years at 30 million a year really the guy you want to give up picks for?

2 more years, not 3. And yes, those picks weren't likely to be very good anyway.

Sort of similarly, if you are willing to do this deal in the offseason, why weren't you willing to do it at the deadline?

They were. From the reports, it seems the Grizz were the ones who got cold feet. Also, the package is different now. They get to keep Favors (who I - and all the advanced stats - love). Or they could still use him as trade bait if someone better becomes available.

Memphis mock draft:

Very glad I got Ja, and think Memphis should take him tomorrow and not think about it for a second. I think he and JJJ could develop something down the road. Slo-Mo gives them a decent passer so they don't have to do everything. Parsons and Tyler Johnson and some of these other vets will get playing time and help the team be absolutely awful in 2019-20 season. Goal is a high draft pick and take hometown guy James Wiseman in 2020 draft.

I really like Thybulle, but Memphis was last in the league in offense (despite having Conley and Gason for most of the season). Taking Ja Morant and JJJ and surrounding them with absolutely nothing else could stunt their development heavily.

I am really high on Herro. He is a worker and can shoot and draw attention in the NBA. I think he plays 15 years in the NBA and will give Ja a bailout shooter when Ja plays out of control.

Entering the 2020 season my Memphis group will now have Ja/Herro/SloMo/JJJ and pick 39, plus a top 6 protected pick and a ton of cap room. Everyone has known for years the crash in Memphis would be very big, but this has the potential to be a solid rebuild without too much pain.

I am predicting a 14 win season in 2019-20, but could have a big rebound in year two, and we can focus this season entirely on developing Ja/Herro and whoever I get at pick 39, and then give money to somebody who just wants to come in and score a ton. If you are a decent wing and want to shoot 20 times, sign with Memphis in 2020...you will get your shots.

I guess technically the Bucks have to pick the player Detroit wants because they can't deal their first rounder straight up, so Crosseyed, who do you want?
   4197. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: June 20, 2019 at 08:45 AM (#5853931)
Detroit will politely ask Milwaukee to take Carsen Edwards.

More meta but:
Should Milwaukee and Detroit here be subject to that real life trade? We had already started prior to this and some real trades will happen that we can’t reproduce (for example, the real Atlanta just sold a draft pick that I, fake Atlanta, had already traded away.)
I guess they already decided...

If so, WAS (Dandy Little Glove Man) is on the clock at 32 (BKN/mike f picked Fernando five posts up).
   4199. Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw Posted: June 20, 2019 at 08:59 AM (#5853934)
hey, that's probably who I was going to take. Him, or Jontay Porter or Eric Paschall.

With the 30th pick, Milwaukee selects Carsen Edwards, G PUR. Now let's picture the fun charade where he puts on a Bucks hat and pretends he's going there for a few minutes.
