OT - NBA thread (Playoffs through off-season)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and this one only cares about the NBA thread and the Cubs so I have no idea what the rest of the website cares about.

@aberg would you have done this deal in our draft? Not even sure I would have while drafting for PHO. I don't know that I love it for either team, but it's probably worse for MIN in BTF Draft as Culver would have been gone before #6.

@4327 so PER doesn't mean anything, then?

PER is a counting stat. because warren scores points with (slightly) above average efficiency and a (slightly) above average usage rate, PER sees him more favorably than similar statistics.

also, their respective PERs in college back up the comp:
warren (SO): 31 PER
hachimura (JR): 28 PER
hachimura (SO): 25 PER
warren (FR): 24 PER

okay, let me clarify my original point now that i've looked more closely at the situation:

PER is a rate stat in the same way that OPS is a rate stat, which is to say: either poorly, or not at all.

depending on your opinion of it, it is either a basic composite statistic best used sparingly, harmless junk best used trivially, or the worst thing to have happened to basketball since chris webber's friends stopped wearing hotpants.

from the ringer:
9. Washington Wizards: Rui Hachimura, F, Gonzaga
Hachimura could walk into a big role early with the Wizards. He has the ability to be a primary option on offense: He’s a 6-foot-8 combo forward who can shoot off the dribble. The question is whether he will be able to do it efficiently in the NBA. He was a below-average 3-point shooter who depended on his ability to dominate because of his size and athleticism in the NCAA. Hachimura is a bit of a project for a lottery pick; he will have to improve as a passer and defensive player to be successful in the NBA.

Grade: D
11. Phoenix Suns (from Minnesota): Cameron Johnson, F, North Carolina
The Suns have suddenly become conservative with their lottery picks. A year after they traded up to no. 10 to take Mikal Bridges, an experienced wing with a proven 3-point shot, they took a similar type of player in Johnson, a fifth-year senior from North Carolina with one of the best 3-point shots in this year’s draft. Johnson isn’t as good defensively as Bridges, but his size (6-foot-9, 205 pounds) should at least allow him to survive on that end of the floor. Johnson will have an immediate role in the NBA, which means he is a pretty safe bet to give them solid minutes off the bench, even if he never ends up as a high-level starter. He hasn’t shown the ability to do much on offense beyond shoot, but he won’t need to if he’s playing with Devin Booker and D’Angelo Russell, the latter of whom they may target in restricted free agency.

Grade: B
15. Detroit Pistons: Sekou Doumbouya, F, Limoges CSP / France
The Pistons are thinking long term with Doumbouya, a talented French swingman who at 18 is one of the youngest players in the draft. He has the size (6-foot-9, 230 pounds) and athleticism to potentially guard three or four positions in the NBA. Like with many players in his mold, his ability to stick at the next level will come down to whether he can consistently knock down 3-point shots. He’s still fairly raw offensively. Doumbouya is so young that it’s easy to dream on him, but it will be a long time before he lives up to whatever potential he has. The risk for the Pistons is that he might end up doing that on a different team.

Grade: C

Does Bol have some sort of health issue?
from nbadraft.net:

Weaknesses: As impressive as he played early in his freshman season, his inability to stay on the floor due to injury calls into question his durability ... Played in just 9 games at Oregon due to a stress fracture in his left foot ... Questionable how reliable he’ll be at the next level ... Whichever team drafts him will be taking an inherent gamble that he doesn’t have further health issues that derail his career ..

It was announced as he "retracted". He claims the Cavs "pivoted". Bullshit

Woj didn't spoil that one though.

He also lost a bunch of weight after he went down with the injury ... can he handle NBA wear and tear? Man to man play?

look, i just want to see a lineup with simmons/bolden/bolbol/noel/embiid. is that really too much ask for, people?

Rui Hachimura told me that he didn't meet with the Wizards before he was selected ninth. He didn't speak to anyone from the team, either. This was just as surprising to him as anyone else.

4383: I read that as slightly negative. That said, I view him as a slight positive at that salary/age/lack of flexibility.

Should I have been aware of Darius Bazley when drafting for OKC? He seems like he could be a better version of Cameron Johnson in two years, but I'm not sure OKC has two years to wait.

Bazley: aware? Yeah. He’s got a high ceiling. Very different timeline, though.

I see Baynes as a positive asset, but it seems like Boston wanted to clear his salary above all else, and so they needed a team that could take him into space. By trading late first-rounder now for a late (and quite possibly later) first-round pick in the future, they create more space. They now have something like 34 or 35m* in room. No idea what they're going to do with it.

* maybe this is only the number if they drop Rozier, too? I'm seeing varying descriptions.

Sources: Cavs sent four second-round picks and cash to Detroit for pick No. 30.

4!!!

Shams: “Sources: The 76ers are trading swingman Jonathon Simmons and No. 42 pick to the Wizards.”
EDIT: only a million of JS’s salary is guaranteed?

i see 24MM in cap space, with rozier's cap hold in place.

Did the 76ers give up the 42 to save a tiny bit of capspace?

Edit: I guess it's a tiny bit of cash since they are probably going to be over the cap.
