OT - NBA thread (Playoffs through off-season)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and this one only cares about the NBA thread and the Cubs so I have no idea what the rest of the website cares about.

I don't think anyone except maybe the guys themselves and their inner circles know what Butler, Durant, and Leonard are going to do, and I think it is quite possible that none of them has actually decided yet.

Side note: when Kupchak got fired here, one of the things going around about him was that he was at a disadvantage because he actually followed the rules in FA--he really wouldn't get into it until the bell actually rung. The amusing part (not for Lakers fans) was that the Lakers' first 1201 EST AM signing (it will be 301 PST with the new sched) was Mozgov. But I think it is worth noting that Walker apparently agreed to a deal to leave Kupchak's new team Charlotte for Boston two or three days before the actual time FA is technically supposed to start.

I am a Porzingis fan, and I can see the appeal of him and Doncic, especially for a franchise whose signature guy is Nowitzki. But I could also see the plan going very badly for Dallas.

Heard a theory that Walker's shooting percentages on 2's and 3's will get better because on Charlotte he had to take all the shots and some of those were terrible because someone had to shoot and going to a better team this won't happen nearly as often. Has anyone checked this out?

I agree on the KP thing, but once they gave up those assets for him, it was clear they were going to go all-in. It could go very badly; I hope it doesn't. He's a neat player.

Dillard rumored to sign a Supermax extension with a player option
Possible terms (nahmad): “
Here’s what a potential Damian Lillard 4-year, $196M super-max extension would look like: 2021-22 (age 31): $43.75M 2022-23 (age 32): $47.25M 2023-24 (age 33): $50.75M 2024-25 (age 34): $54.25M”

Re: Walker %s

I do remember reading an article that looked at percentage of shots taken near the end of the shot clock and Walker seemed to have to take an inordinate amount of those.
   4913. spivey Posted: June 30, 2019 at 03:13 PM (#5857284)
I can't tell how much the rumor mill journalists are just pulling stuff out of their ass and how much players are just weighing their options. But the amount of different angles that the same reporters are giving on what KD, Kawhi, Butler, and more will do is really something.

I love Lillard, his game, and his leadership. But hasn't the clear lesson been that it never makes sense to sign these super max deals one minute before you absolutely have to?
   4915. spivey Posted: June 30, 2019 at 03:19 PM (#5857286)
I think Milwaukee should offer the supermax for Giannis as soon as they can. Don't risk letting him change his mind. But Giannis is gonna be playing a whole bunch of those years in his 20s, and he's way better than Lillard.

I don't think Lillard is worth that contract. In fact, I think those years I'm not sure Lillard really has surplus value on a normal non-Bird rights max.

Comparing Kemba to the easy comp--Isaiah Thomas in 16-17, since both are small, scoring PGs with similar games.

Kemba:
24-22: 0.7%, 58% EFG
22-18: 14.0%, 53%
18-15: 23.8%, 53.9%
15-7: 46.7%, 50.9%
7-4: 5.2%, 48.3%
4-0: 9.5%, 43.8%

King in the Fourth: (hey, Jon Snow got stabbed in the back, too!)

24-22: 3.3%, 71.1% EFG
22-18: 18.5%, 65.5%
18-15: 20.3%, 60.5%
15-7: 44.2%, 59.2%
7-4: 7.4%, 52.5%
4-0: 6.3%, 40.6%

So Kemba seems to take more of the "flaming bag" type shots, where someone has to throw something up, but a normal level of sub 7 seconds.

If you're looking at JUST the last 4 seconds, Kemba takes a slightly higher rate of those shots, but what really stands out to me is just how little Kemba gets his own shot in transition. Not sure how much that's Charlotte, and how much that's Kemba.

I think a lot of it is team sources looking to get preferred narratives on the net. Examples: two days ago, an article appeared saying that James told Leonard that if Leonard comes to LAL, James would "take a more complementary role." After a few things appeared saying that the Lakers have momentum on Leonard, we then saw stuff talking about Leonard teaming up with Butler or Durant on LAC.

I disagree. He has enough money that he can highly value non-monetary considerations if he wants. Honestly none of his possible decisions is really a bad one, it is all about what he values.

I think ownership-level issues probably bother players less than fans. A lot of the Lakers' own blogosphere fans were calling the team a "shitshow" and a "dumpster fire", but Davis doesn't seem to care. He appears to see James, LA, and endorsement money.

That said, I have always been skeptical about guys committing to the Knicks, but more because of the current roster than because of Dolan per se.

It’s great the way management handled the Porzingis situation. I mean, yeah he was/is probably overrated by Knicks fans but he was probably the one player they had with the most upside since Ewing and they crapped that away.

Once free agency opens at 6 PM ET, Brook Lopez is planning to sign a four-year, $52M deal to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks, league sources tell ESPN.

Hmmm

...

The Nets could be good if Durant gets back to 100%. DAJ isn't the best fit, is Allen available for cheap now?

The version with a healthy Durant? That's a strong, strong yes. That team was solid this year, they're upgrading from Russell to Kyrie, and (in the healthy Durant world), adding a top 5 player.

Yeah these Bucks supporting cast contracts are getting... interesting. Gotta hand it to ownership for going for it, though.
   4932. spivey Posted: June 30, 2019 at 04:45 PM (#5857310)
I don't agree with the Lopez deal. He's better than Dedmon but not by a lot and he'll probably be poor for at least the last year of the deal, and though I don't think he's as much as a liability as his rep on switches, he still is slow footed. It seems from everything like they're prioritizing Lopez over Brogdon and I don't like it. That could make sense in the regular season, but I don't think it makes sense in the playoffs.

As noted, I think that Milwaukee will keep all those guys to keep Antetokounmpo happy, even if the back ends of the deals look bad. And if they put up a banner, no one will care (cough five year deal for Ron Artest in 2009 cough).
   4936. spivey Posted: June 30, 2019 at 04:50 PM (#5857314)
Yeah, if Durant comes back near 100%, the Nets with him and Kyrie are going to be at worst among the top favorites. I do think their wing guys like Levert and Dinwiddie are pretty weak shooters and have highly unnecessary skills on a team with Kyrie and Durant. I'd look to deal one of them this offseason or next year if they can. I'd probably trade whichever has more value.

Milwaukee - if we lost Brogdon, I would like to see a deal like 3/35 for Danny Green. A top team offering that is probably about right, right?

4939. rr: calming the thread down with my arms Posted: June 30, 2019 at 04:58 PM (#5857319)
I think they will match on Brogdon. As discussed, we may very well be looking at an East where:

Leonard leaves Toronto for LAC or LAL
Durant is on rehab and maybe still in Golden State
Butler leaves Philadelphia for Miami or Houston (or maybe LA)
Irving leaves Boston for Brooklyn, but Durant is not playing yet

In that scenario, Milwaukee is the favorite, and even if Butler and Leonard stay put, Milwaukee still has a solid shot. They just opened a new arena and have the MVP entering his age-25 season. This is obviously NOT the time to sweat payroll.

Seems way too early to say that. A lot of things can change in a year, no one knows what Toronto, Milwaukee, etc., will look like. Not to mention the rest of Brooklyn's roster.

Like, I don’t see any situation where a roll it back Bucks team isn’t the favourite or cofavourite to win a title. None of last seasons top four are getting better, and colour me deeply skeptical that the three max players + minimum scrubs teams are a threat.

There will only--maybe--be one of those. If the three guys are James, Davis, and Leonard, I am very comfortable saying that that team is a threat, biased though I am.

4944. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: June 30, 2019 at 05:05 PM (#5857324)
Yeah, the Lopez extension--and, presumably, matching a huge 4 year offer on Brogdon--is all about going for it right now. Within a year or two they'll probably be paying someone in draft picks to take Lopez and/or Middleton to get back under the tax line. But right now Milwaukee is looking like the favorite to win the East next year, especially if Kawhi leaves Toronto.

You don't know how long you'll have the Greek Freak at the peak of his powers. Milwaukee really had little choice but to overpay to keep the band together for 2019-2020, and sort out the fallout later.

Scalding hot take: I kinda think the Embiid/Simmons 76ers are already done as a contender.

Anyone else hearing Kawhi and Butler to the Warriors?

Apparently, Orlando thinks the only thing that was wrong with last year's Orlando team is that they didn't cost enough.

Now they've also signed Aminu to 3/29. With him, Vooch, Bamba, Gordon, Isaac, and Birch, that's a lot of frontcourt guys.

yeah, that Aminu deal doesn't make sense to me. They've already got too many bigs who can't shoot.

Flurry! Bogdanovic to Utah, Ricky to Phoenix, Lamb to Indy!

Interesting pivot to a smaller Jazz lineup. Pacers really need a PG.

Edit: Unless they get Brogdon!

Rubio is actually a pretty good fit with Booker. That team is still bad.

The Wolves should trade Teague into space somewhere. He’s still useful, and a team would be able to preserve the cap space for next summer. NYK, I’m looking at you.
