I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, and this one only cares about the NBA thread and the Cubs so I have no idea what the rest of the website cares about.

Who are the other potential teams of interest for Paul? I understand why Houston made the trade, but it doesn't change the fact that they had to attach two lightly protected 1sts and 2 pick swaps to his contract, and the guy they got in return also has a terrible contract. It stands to reason that Paul's deal isn't exactly seen as a great value by other teams in the league.

PHI, MIL, DEN, LAL, CHI, ORL, IND, MIN, CHO, DAL...
assuming that paul can stay healthy and play well for 2 months, at least 1/3 of the league would double their odds of winning another playoff series by replacing their current PG with C3P on december 15th.

Very few of those teams could trade for Paul under existing salary cap rules.

Paul's going to go a team in exchange for shorter bad contracts. Heat fit, so do the Hornets or the Knicks if they want him. Maybe the Pistons could swing it.

Right. OKC presumably isn't interested in Wiggins, for example, who would have to be included for the Wolves to make it work. Or Bledsoe, for the Bucks. Or Rozier, for Charlotte, etc.
He will make 85.5 million american dollars in the two seasons following this one. It's an extremely difficult contract to trade, as Houston discovered. I don't think there are a ton of options that make sense for both parties.

the NBA is wide open, and chris paul is a legitimate difference maker. if OKC wants to trade him for fine contracts, that just means it'll take a third team to get the deal done.

free agent contracts that were signed this summer, can be traded on december 15th.

I understand that. Instead of "could trade for Paul" I should have said "could reasonably trade for Paul." If you think, for instance, the Sixers are going to guarantee $136ish million to Paul/Richardson/Simmons/Horford/Embiid next year, I would disagree (this would also force you to believe that OKC would be willing to take back Tobias Harris's contract, which strikes me as a little difficult to believe).

I did think Minnesota made some sense for Westbrook, but I'm not sure the Wolves (or their fans) would agree, so I guess Paul makes some kind of sense but less so, given his age. But again, I don't see why OKC would take back Wiggins or Dieng (in addition to Teague).

god, i hate that ####### contract.
"tobias harris is our 4th best offensive option and has nearly no defensive value"
"cool, let's pay him 60MM more than dangelo russell, 100MM more than malcolm brogdon or bojan bogdanovic, 140MM more than patrick beverley and 150MM more than thad young, danny green and jeremy lamb."
"brilliant."

they already have that much guaranteed for simmonds/richardson/harris/horford/embiid
i think sixers ownership is willing to write a blank check at this point. the franchise is worth 5x what they paid for it 7 years ago, and it'll be more fun to shove "the process" in people's faces when there's a ring to leave an imprint on their forehead.

It would be about 8 million more to Paul, but fair enough I guess.

Tobias Harris future was settled when they traded all of that draft and young talent capital for him. In fact, if they didn't do that, does Kawhi even land on the Clippers? Probably, but maybe not, right?
But yes, it's easy to say that Brogdon and Danny Green for that money would be a way better use of resources. Would that have even been possible, though? I don't remember where they sat with the cap on if they truly could have given all of that Harris money to someone else.

They gave their cap space to Horford and signed Harris with (whichever) rights they had to him, I think?
Stipulating that your lineup includes Joel Embiid, Al Horford, Ben Simmons, and Josh Richardson, would you rather the 5th guy be Tobias Harris or Landry Shamet?

harris had a ~20MM cap hold, so the sixers were "allowed" to go over the cap to keep him.
if they had signed thad young instead, they'd only have ~7MM left, rather than 20...but they'd also have a better player with a not godawful contract, so i'd have chosen to go in that direction. plus, with the remainder, they could have signed a shooter like garrett temple or reggie bullock or kyle singler.

assuming they both have 180MM contracts...too soon to tell.
Dumb question: I'm looking for a site that looks at a player's stats when he is playing position X versus Y (yes, positions are kind of a false construct, I know) and have used them before but now I can't remember who has this... tips?
(The context is that I'm thinking about Jabari Parker, who everyone agrees should play the four -- only I think he's actually been more successful at the three?)
After averaging career highs in several different categories -- including games, points, assists and rebounds -- what [Josh Richardson] did best goes beyond the box score. According to Second Spectrum research, opposing players shot 41.6 percent when Richardson was the closest defender, tied for fifth best among 100 players to defend at least 700 shots last season.
The only players with a lower percentage? Anthony Davis, Joel Embiid, Al Horford and Ben Simmons. -- Williams

Probably. The first preseason game is October 1st!
