Olympiacos and Forest owner has coronavirus (didn't realize it was the same guy). Manchester United behind closed doors at LASK.

Well now Jose is going to really have to start pushing guys forw... nevermind.

Tottenham is comically bad at this point.

And on Friday he was in the locker room shaking hands with Forest's players. What happens if a bunch of players on one team come down with it?

Tyler Adams on for Leipzig. At least something of interest in the game now.

Germany's Bundesliga is poised to earn the most points in the UEFA country rankings the first time in a long time. Span and England are still right there as well, but it's very possible Germany could have more teams advancing into the QFs in Europe.

They've got enough points to be well beyond safe ... but, boy, are they awful.

I only watched the 1st half (because it was over at the end of it), but I swear their strategy was like watching a team of 10 year olds play ... boot it downfield and hope the kid who hit puberty early gets it. Except, well, they don't *have* that kid right now.

That was ... ugly (though, as I posted earlier, exactly what I expected).

This team could spend some time in the wilderness ...

Arsenal’s too. Their match with City has been postponed because most of their squad is under quarantine.

I think at this point it’s a race against time for Liverpool to mathematically secure the title before the rest of the season is called off.

Will all of them have to be quarantined for 14 days? The Arsenal 14-day period is up on Friday this week, but Forest players maybe not.

Getafe president says they will forfeit before traveling to Milan for the game tomorrow.

I think these games might be on the brink now. Closed doors may not cut it.
   111. spivey Posted: March 11, 2020 at 08:33 AM (#5929393)
Wolves petitioned for the Olympiakos tie to be postponed because of the owner situation, and it was denied. It's tough because being in the knockouts is one of the highlights of their team's history. So I'm sure their loathe to forfeit. Public sentiment would very much be on their side, but we know that does not always matter to UEFA/FIFA/IOC.

I think either way if the season is called off, they will announce a champion, top 4, and relegation based on the current standings, or current standings as of the last matchday every team has played. Liverpool will get their title, even if it has an asterisk next to it.
   112. Mefisto Posted: March 11, 2020 at 09:29 AM (#5929404)
For City fans. And anyone else interested, of course.
   113. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: March 11, 2020 at 09:31 AM (#5929406)
Worry about Liverpool not getting a "real" title is so stupid, because everyone knows they have already won it and would always treat it that way if the season ended tomorrow.

It's all the other titles, positions, relegations, in the EPL and other leagues etc. that may be forever questioned. Liverpool's title not in the least.

I mean, opposition fans would sing about the 'fake' title for the rest of time. That's how these things work. Terrible reason to want the game to keep happening, but I think it's naive to believe fans will just agree that Liverpool's title is legit.

I agree with this. I think most will acknowledge it's legit or essentially legit, but will do it to wind up Liverpool fans. I think that's fine.

Some of the more interesting races:

-Barca pulled ahead of RM over the weekend due to RM's surprising loss to Betis. Barca by no means feels safe at this point with 11 matches to play. Celta Vigo and Eibar would stay up by 1 and 2 points respectively. Getafe and Real Sociedad are tied for the last CL spot on points and GD. Not sure what their next tiebreaker is. Goals scored? Real leads there.

-Juve is a point ahead of Lazio. Inter have a game in hand but they have fallen 9 points behind. Genoa would stay up ahead of Lecce on GD.

-Bayern is 4 points up on Dortmund. Both teams playing really well right now, but slightly hard to imagine Bayern dropping multiple games. Leipzig has wavered a bit and is one more point back. Gladbach are a point behind Leverkusen with a game in hand for the last CL spot in Germany.

-Watford, West Ham, and Bournemouth are level on points, all within 3 goals of each other. SHU have a game in hand and if they won it, they'd leapfrog Man U for 5th, which would be the last CL spot if the City ban holds. That seems important.

-No idea what would happen with Championship playoffs. West Brom and Leeds have stabilized a bit and still have a decent lead for the top 2. Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham, Preston are current playoff teams. And Forest was one who has a sick owner and is in quarantine.

-Ajax would win the Eredivesie on GD over AZ.

   117. Fernigal McGunnigle Posted: March 11, 2020 at 02:48 PM (#5929560)
The announcer in the Gladbach/Koln game just noted that he can hear rain falling through his headphones, something that's also audible on the broadcast. The announcer said that's just one more thing he never thought he'd experience while broadcasting a soccer match.

A Liverpool asterisk could be erased by someone asking Pep if City would've had any chance of coming back if the season had played out in its entirety, and Pep saying no.
   118. jmurph Posted: March 11, 2020 at 02:50 PM (#5929562)
Juve over Lazio by a point would get an asterisk. The Premier League has been over for months.
   119. Topher Posted: March 11, 2020 at 03:32 PM (#5929583)
I really can't figure out which game I want to watch today. I hate that these two are on simultaneously and frankly am a bit surprised that in 2020 TV still hasn't split them into different time slots.

Bayern is 4 points up on Dortmund. Both teams playing really well right now, but slightly hard to imagine Bayern dropping multiple games.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet heavy on Bayern. But Dortmund hosts them. If Dortmund wins that game, Bayern is unlikely to win out in the other 8 games. So the opportunity is there for Dortmund, but it's just as unlikely that Dortmund goes the rest of the season without dropping points.

A Liverpool asterisk could be erased by someone asking Pep if City would've had any chance of coming back if the season had played out in its entirety, and Pep saying no.

Pretty sure Evertonians would insist the Liverpool title is illegitimate as they would have been able to make up the 45 point deficit in the 9 remaining fixtures if they had the chance to play out the season.

Winaldjum header late in the half make it 1-0 (1-1). Liverpool have been all over Atletico.

Robertson hit the bar in a free header from about 5 yards out. Still 1-1 on aggregate. PSG lead 2-0 (3-2) in their match,

Milner replaces the Ox who in my opinion had a great game. He seemed to be around the ball and laying the right pads all night.

Wait, is TBS not showing the PSG game? That’s nuts.

Oh wow, no Atleti offense all day until that set piece at the end, but it looks like he was way offside.
   127. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: March 11, 2020 at 05:52 PM (#5929645)
That would have been quite a finish. Luckily it wasn't close enough to call on VAR.

Have to admit I'm having trouble getting into these games knowing that the full-throated fans are spreading death.
   128. manchestermets Posted: March 11, 2020 at 05:54 PM (#5929647)
If Liverpool (or indeed any club) were awarded the title without actually winning it, there's not a single fan of any other club in England that would recognise it as legit.

And if they try and relegate clubs based on the current standings, the court cases will still be going on in August when it's time for the new season to start. There's zero chance of that happening. I very much doubt the season will be totally abandoned, playing out the season behind closed doors is much more likely.
   129. Jose Is Absurdly Chatty Posted: March 11, 2020 at 05:58 PM (#5929649)
Firmino!
   130. Jose Is Absurdly Chatty Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:01 PM (#5929650)
Atletico answer! Now I’m confused. Does the away goal in extra time count? Ate atleti through as it stands?
   131. aberg Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:02 PM (#5929651)
This is wild. Does CL have the rule where away goals reset going into extra time? That always confuses me.
   132. manchestermets Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:02 PM (#5929652)
Adrian!

(By the way, I watched a bit of PSG-Dortmund earlier - watching games behind closed doors is awful.)

Also yes, away goals still counts. I've heard people saying that it's unfair because the away team has more chance to score them, but the counterpoint to that is that the home team has more time playing at home.
   133. aberg Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:03 PM (#5929653)
Yeah, what Jose said.

I went to an MLS playoff game between Seattle and Portland a couple years ago where the players didn't realize the away goals advantage goes away in extra time. The Portland players went nuts celebrating the win for a few minutes until the refs told them they still had PKs ahead of them.
   134. manchestermets Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:04 PM (#5929654)
I can't help thinking that five minute passage of play suggests that Atletico's best tactic might be to attack a bit as they can probably get at Liverpool, but here we are.
   135. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: March 11, 2020 at 06:11 PM (#5929657)
Sheesh Liverpool.

3 away goals given up in extra time is.... not good. I didn't see the last one.

If Liverpool (or indeed any club) were awarded the title without actually winning it, there's not a single fan of any other club in England that would recognise it as legit.
Is this really true? If I were to argue for non-legitimacy with any Liverpool fan or otherwise, anytime really, but especially under these particular circumstances, I wouldn't be able to respect myself the next day. Yeah I could see myself winding someone up about it in the right circumstances, but that's about it.

England women lost again today. That's 7 losses in their last 11 games. I wrote a piece on the sexist double standard that is keeping Phil Neville in a job despite a truly horrendous run of results (and performances).

NBA season suspended. Juve player tests positive. I think all major sports leagues in Europe are about to go on hiatus.
   143. jmurph Posted: March 12, 2020 at 10:10 AM (#5929864)
Obviously this is extremely unimportant compared to health and safety and economic stresses, but it sure looks like we're all about to be pent up in our respective homes for a couple weeks with no sports to distract us! That will be weird, if nothing else.

Three Leicester players in self-isolation after showing symptoms. I guess this is the last weekend of Premier League games (and presumably other English games) being played with spectators.

Do you mean last weekend? Surely they're going to close the doors, perhaps even cancel the games.
   148. manchestermets Posted: March 12, 2020 at 10:45 AM (#5929880)
No, I mean the coming weekend. I expect they'll decide that it's too close to this weekend to close the doors, although I could be wrong.

Seriously, the UK response to this thing has been every bit as pathetic as the US response, if not more.

MLS suspending immediately, according to Grant Wahl.

Yeah, I was going to say England is botching this even worse than the US, but maybe they're doing the same, they're just a few days behind. I think yesterday was the tipping point for the US.

Blurgh, it was the Daily Mail, and they appear to have walked it back. Sorry if I spread incorrect news! The headline in the link on twitter is "UEFA suspend Champions League and Europa League Due to Coronavirus" but when you click the link it says they will "hold crisis talks." Delightful.

Well looks like they're getting there anyway, slowly:

Manchester City – Real Madrid
Juventus – Olympique Lyonnais

Further decisions on the matches will be communicated in due course.

A Chelsea player (Callum Hudson-Odoi) just tested positive, and the full team and coaching staff are going into self-isolation. That's two full teams in autoquarantine.

I saw some tweets earlier today saying the rumor was that the Bundesliga was planning on not relegating anyone, promoting four teams out of the Bundesliga 2, playing with 22 teams next year, then relegating four of them. I can't imagine there being the time for 42 league games per team, but who knows.

On that note, I'm reading Michael Cox's Zonal Marking and it's great so far. Seems to mainly be post-backpass rule change history of (up to the point I've read) the Dutch and Italian approaches to the game (mainly Ajax and Juventus, respectively), and I think it's going to cover Spain/Barcelona and England, not sure what else. Presumably Germany.

Soccer all postponed. EPL until April 3, but it seems unlikely to restart then. There's a pretty good chance the 2019-2020 year is over for good. If that happens, no idea what the plan is for deciding who is in next year's competitions.
   166. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: March 13, 2020 at 02:35 PM (#5930400)
Time for a final tally of the EPL this year versus preseason rating 538 (and ELO). ELO was down more accross the board on the EPL, because as a league they were down a bit. This isn't really reflected in 538's model, because their in-season league adjustments are crap.

                  538 delta ELO delta

Sheffield United +11.5 +82
Brighton +7.9 +19
Wolves +6.5 +60
Leicester +6.3 +60
Manchester United +6.2 +11
Watford +5.2 -8
Burnley +3.6 +25

Manchester City +0.6 -66
Southampton -0.3 -5
Chelsea -0.4 -43
Norwich -0.7 -35
Crystal Palace -0.7 -20
Liverpool -1.0 -23
Everton -1.0 -37

West Ham -2.7 -55
Arsenal -2.9 -69
Aston Villa -5.0 -15
Bouremouth -5.5 -57
Newcastle -7.6 -23

   167. jmurph Posted: March 13, 2020 at 02:37 PM (#5930402)
So let's say they come back in... late April/early May? Possibly insanely unrealistic, I'm just thinking it through. Do they think they're going to cram 9 games into like 4-5 weeks somehow, plus European competitions, right before a ton of these guys head off for the Euros? I really hope not, seems like such a major injury risk.
   168. The Marksist Posted: March 13, 2020 at 03:05 PM (#5930411)
Random suggestions I've seen include bumping the Euros to next summer (seem likely) and playing out the 19/20 season this year. Obviously we don't know, but that seems pretty reasonable to me.

Looking through ESPN's scores, it seems as though the biggest leagues still playing are Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. The A League is on ESPN+ and still running. I wonder what professional league will be the last one standing. Indonesia? South Africa? Ecuador?

#166: It's good to have numbers to confirm how garbage Spurs were this season. Both in the underlying stats (538) and actual results (Elo)! (I use the past tense because I think it's likely the season is over.)
   173. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: March 15, 2020 at 02:29 AM (#5930654)
538 is based on underlying stats, but it's also a lot like a modified ELO system because it adjusts each team as a direct result of what it did in the last game only, and final score also counts 1/3. Overall I would say it's at least 50% an ELO system.

Looking through ESPN's scores, it seems as though the biggest leagues still playing are Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. The A League is on ESPN+ and still running. I wonder what professional league will be the last one standing. Indonesia? South Africa? Ecuador?

If it's confirmed that warmer and more humid climates lead to the virus being much less dangerous, a lot of leagues will stay open.

Again looking at ESPN, Ghana and Ecuador appear to have shut down. Turkey and Russia have games going on right now, and Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia have games scheduled for later today. Brazilian cup games scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed. Gremio of Brazil team went on the field wearing masks to protest their games continuing (in an empty stadium). A bunch of African leagues (Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria) have games scheduled for later in the week.

Is this accurate?

Euro 2020 is now Euro 2021, 11 June to 11 July.

Looks like it.

Following Uefa's decision, the Premier League - which has currently suspended games until April 4 - will meet again on Thursday and look to start laying out plans to conclude the domestic season.

Wow. So likely planning to complete the full league seasons then, into the summer.

Turkey, Russia, and the South American and African leagues all seem to be shut down. The highest leagues left playing appear to be Australia and Singapore. The Australian W-League final is on ESPN+ just after midnight tonight. The A-League plans to finish the season in empty stadiums. Wellington plans to play all of their remaining games in Australia, but is under 14 day quarantine after flying into the country. And Melbourne vs. Brisbane was postponed due to a cyclone.

Most teams have 9 games left. Assume a two games per week schedule, that means you need 5 weeks, ignoring champions league etc. Most contracts run until June 30th so the first goal is to finish by then. So a start by say the 25th of May (ignoring likelyhood) would work best for the EPL and other leagues.

From Max Rushden of Football Weekly;

Attn @guardian_sport FW fans.

Monday we'll be looking back at our first classic game.

England v Argentina - Mexico '86.

We're gonna watch it at 6pm UK time on Saturday night. Start watching at 5.57pm on the dot.

Since it’s Sunday morning I made breakfast and I’m now watching the game. I know what is coming obviously but I’ve never seen the whole game and it’s fun to watch the old graphics and styles. About half an hour gone 0-0. Decent start for England but the last 15-20 minutes have been Argentina. A few observations;

- The size of the players is so much different. Just a small thing but a ball came into the box and Shilton had to punch it over. I was waiting for the catch but he was scrambling.

- The pace is also noticeable. There is not nearly the pressing and aggression particularly when the ball is given away in the attacking end. The focus is on getting back defensively.

- Maradona just did the thing we would do as kids, took the corner flag out before taking the corner. Linesman didn’t let that stand and made him put it back.

- Maradona gets his ass handed to him routinely throughout the game. Dude was tough as nails wasn’t he?

- So in 1986 soccer basically you could shoot a guy and as long as it didn’t impact the play as it happened the ref would just kind of shrug.

A belated note that the A-League shut down after Monday's games. So that's the last significant league shuttered. The Singapore Premier League suspended their season on Tuesday, but their last games were on Friday.
