OT Soccer Thread - Transfer! Kits! Other Stuff!

Bundesliga, Premier League and La Liga start August 13.

Serie A August 20.

Ligue Une started this weekend.  I haven’t paid attention to much but I assume defending champions Lille are expected to repeat.

Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference last qualifying rounds are the week of August 16 with draws for the group stages on the 27th.

Women’s Champions League qualifying rounds are the week of the 16th as well.

English Women’s Super League starts September 3rd.

What a disgraceful, pathetic, damning mess.

Dames is the fifth male NWSL coach to be accused of misconduct this year, during which a culture of mistreatment exploded into public view and triggered a reckoning throughout the league. Players have criticized the league and team officials for failing to protect and listen to them. The league’s commissioner, Lisa Baird, resigned in the face of revelations that she had dismissed two players’ pleas to reopen an investigation against Paul Riley, a coach who was accused of sexual misconduct.

But the allegations against Dames also point to the role of U.S. Soccer in the league’s repeated failures to address years of alleged abuse — and in what some players have called the league’s “culture of silence.” Press was an employee of U.S. Soccer, not the NWSL, when she played under Dames.

Press said she first spoke up about Dames in 2014, during a meeting with Sunil Gulati, then the president of U.S. Soccer, and other U.S. Soccer officials. She remembered telling them that Dames had created a toxic environment on the team, yelling at his players in a way that seemed like “harassment.”

Gulati dismissed her concerns, Press recalled, by saying Dames’s behavior was normal for a professional coach. Press, who said she had been told she needed to play in the NWSL to keep her spot on the national team, said she felt she had no choice but to return the next season.

WaPo Story

Dynamo Kiev drew Benfica (albeit at home) last time they played. They are good enough that they could get a draw again. Barca are in trouble but it wouldn’t shock me to see Kiev put a wrench into things.

United have won the group with the H2H tiebreaker (2-0-0 against Villarreal). That probably works in Villarreal’s favor a bit. There is no incentive to attack against Atalanta and open themselves up. They can play for a draw to advance.

Presumably Chelsea will win group H and Juve 2nd. Playing in St. Petersburg on December 8th can become a bit challenging potentially Chelsea host Leeds the weekend after this game so they aren’t in a position where they are going to have/want to hold people back.

The H2H tiebreakers shake things out in Group G so as Aunt Bea says Lille are in really good shape to advance but they’ll want to win to avoid finishing 2nd. A draw puts them through but opens the door for Salzburg to win the group with a win over Sevilla. If Lille lose to Wolfsburg and the Salzburg/Sevilla game is a draw we get a three way tie with Wolfsburg, Lille and Salzburg. At that point Salzburg would win the group and a one goal win puts Lille through a two goal or greater win puts WOL through. An unlikely 5+ goal win in that scenario would make Wolfsburg the group winner. If Lille draw and Sevilla Lille wins the group and Sevilla finish second.

I think I have that right.

That Dames story is not great. US Soccer has failed the women in its program pretty badly.
   704. spivey 2 Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:13 PM (#6054390)
H2H GD also means Barca is in tougher #### than you may have imagined. 538 has Barcelona at 40% to make round of 16.

Benfica is at home against Dynamo Kiev, who has nothing to play for except pride. If they win, Barca has to win.
   705. spivey 2 Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:16 PM (#6054393)
In a lot of these matches, I don't think you can play for a draw in a final game of group stage situation. Especially since I think most of the teams mentioned here (Lille, Salzburg, Atalanta) are all better offensively than defensively. Even a team like Sevilla who is good defensively, you're playing Atalanta who is very good defensively and also just gave up 3 goals to Young Boys. I think you must assume they could score a goal, which means you also need to attack. You can play counter attacking football, but I don't think any teams should be parking the bus until the last 30 minutes.

I was initially wrong on the last page when I said something similar.

If any teams tie on 8 points (2 or 3-way tie), Lille is out because they will have the least points among the tied teams. As a result, Wolfsburg is in if and only if they win, by any score, and Lille is out if and only if they lose, by any score. Exactly one of those teams will go through and the Salzburg result is irrelevant. It's a true play-in game.

Likewise, If Salzburg draws or wins by any score they are through, and if they lose by any score Sevilla is through. It's another true play-in game with the result of the Lille/Wolfsburg game being irrelevant.

As you might imagine, it's a very unusual state of affairs to have two completely independent play-in games in the same group of 4 teams in the final round.

edit: I guess the result of the other game is not completely irrelevant, because if there is a 3-way tie on 8 points, Wolfsburg is group winner.

wrong thread.

Barca is a little under 50/50 to advance, by betting odds. Villarreal/Atalanta is right around 50/50 (Atalanta being considered slightly better and being at home, but needing a win).

Wolfsburg needs a win at home, but they aren't really considered to be much better than Lille, so should be a bit under 50/50, or maybe right around 50/50. Sevilla needs a road win, so they will definitely be under 50/50.

Spartak with then early pen to take the lead against Napoli. Could make this critical game for Napoli very interesting.

They are using an orange/red ball I guess for the snow, though there is no snow on the field so the ball is actually harder to see than had they used a regular ball. Especially since it's similar to the color of the Spartak shirts.

edit: 2-0! Quite the scoreline. Napoli looks quite dangerous too though, so expect more goals. If Napoli fails to get at least a draw today, they will likely need to beat Leicester in the final round to advance.

Real Salt Lake wins without taking a shot in MLS Playoffs
Real Salt Lake won despite failing to record a shot in regulation and extra time. It was the first time in league history a team failed to register a shot in a playoff match.

   711. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 01:44 PM (#6054479)
Ajax doesn't seem to be interested in a result today, and they don't need one, so it makes sense. If Besiktas does hold on to win though, it's not inconceivable that Dortmund could be eliminated from Europe completely. They'd have to lose both today and to Besiktas. Very unlikely but not impossible.

Winning on penalties after not taking a short for 2 hours seems almost like cheating.
   712. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 02:52 PM (#6054490)
If Sheriff loses to RealMadrid today, they will be headed for Europa. After winning their first 2 games they were given a 29% chance to advance. Still pretty low, but it seems not low enough. They've been completely outclassed in their last 3 group games. Combined xG 8.5 to 1, though they did manage to score 3 times and win one of those games.
   713. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6054496)
Leipzig seemingly likely to beat Brugge now means Leipzig will have the inside track for Europa after all. Also means City/PSG is only for who tops the group. Both teams will qualify.
   714. Jose Has Absurd Goosebump Arms Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6054497)
Brugges' hope of meaningful matchday six is going up in flames. 3-0 Leipzig less than half an hour in.
   715. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:32 PM (#6054498)
Announcer says that PSG have "defended the 6-yard box brilliantly" due to a few last-ditch blocks. How about not letting City receive passes deep in the penalty area right in front of goal in the first place? This is terrible defending overall.

Dortmund gives up a goal against the run of play on a defensive ######! They are on the outside looking in at the moment. IF Dortmund loses by two they are done. If they lose by just one they will need to make up a ton of GD, which is also not likely anyway, but is possible due to final week matchups.
   716. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:36 PM (#6054499)
Not sure how City has not scored yet. This is been extremely lopsided. The xG scorers haven't called any of the shots from inside the box "big chances" yet, but that's a bit in the eye of the beholder.
   717. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:41 PM (#6054501)
2-0 Sporting. Dortmund's dream is hanging by a thread.
   718. jmurph Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:53 PM (#6054504)
City-PSG has inexplicable 0-1 written all over it. They have absolutely no plan for defending or attacking for that matter, but the front three are good enough to create one out of nothing anyway.
   719. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 03:59 PM (#6054505)
If Dortmund goes out, it will have been quite the collapse. They were given a 95% chance to advance after 2 rounds (which seemed a bit high to me, since they hadn't played Ajax yet). 79% before this round, which also seemed high, since any loss would put them in a tough spot.

Liverpool is doing Atleti a favor beating Porto in a game that means nothing to Liverpool. Now a draw today is just as good as a win for Atleti. A draw today and a draw in the final round and they will advance with just 6 points.

Man City now with two quick easy goals.

What's the bigger surprise? Dortmund losing three in a row or Sporting winning three in a row?
   725. spivey 2 Posted: November 24, 2021 at 05:01 PM (#6054517)
Dortmund falling apart is bigger because 2 of Sporting's wins are against Besiktas. Speaking of, the Turkish league has really fallen apart. Not that they were ever great, but they used to be reasonably game opponents.

Dortmund has always had a real softness to their game the last several years. They have enough attacking talent where they've been able to get enough results anyways, but if you take Haaland off that team, they're nothing.
   726. spivey 2 Posted: November 24, 2021 at 05:08 PM (#6054518)
Atletico Madrid's in a tough spot. Their ability to grind results makes them the most meaningful team that's on the ropes heading into the final match day. Need to beat Porto on the road. Looks like away goals will be the relevant H2H tiebreaker vs Milan, so if they beat Porto, they should be in.

They'll be favored, but probably under 50%.
   727. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 24, 2021 at 05:11 PM (#6054519)
Results today really clean up these groups, with the big exception of Atleti/Sporting/Milan. Atleti managed to lose at home to Milan, so Milan is still in it, needing a win against Liverpool and some help (either a draw in the other game, or the right kind of Atleti win).

City tops their group with PSG second. Leipzig has the inside draw for third.
Ajax tops their group with Sporting second. Dortmund locked into third.
RealMadrid hosts Inter needing only a draw to win the group. Sheriff locked into third.

If Chelsea wins their game next week, all EPL teams will have topped their groups. Germany could end up with just Bayern unless Wolfsburg pulls through. La Liga could end up with just RealMadrid, or 4 teams. They have 3 teams right on the bubble, none favored to go through but all with very solid chances. Serie A has two teams through but probably no group winners. Atalanta on the bubble and Milan still with a prayer.

What we do have this year is some non-Top 4 (plus PSG) teams. Ajax of course, but also Sporting, more likely than not Porto and/or Benfica, and 1 or both of Salzburg and Lille, both favored to advance (barely). We'll have 2-6 of these teams, but a median of slightly over 4.

Dortmund is the biggest scalp of the group stage so far, but they could be topped by one or both of Atleti and Barca. Sevilla too, considering they were the best team in their group.

Looks like away goals will be the relevant H2H tiebreaker vs Milan, so if they beat Porto, they should be in.
You're forgetting that they got rid of the away goals rule for tied teams in the group stage (when they removed it from head-to-head KO tiebreaker). They left it in for overall group results, but that's a very late tiebreaker.

Points in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
Goal difference in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
Goals scored in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
Goal difference in all group matches;
Goals scored in all group matches;
Away goals scored in all group matches;
Wins in all group matches;
Away wins in all group matches;
Disciplinary points (direct red card = 3 points; double yellow card = 3 points; single yellow card = 1 point);
UEFA club coefficient.

edit: if both Atleti and Milan win, Atleti has to make up an extra goal to be level on GD. They'll also need to score at least 1 more than Milan to tie them on goals scored. Then they would go to away goals scored in all group games. So, Atleti would need to score at least 2 on the road at Porto (if Milan wins).

I should have said that La Liga has 4 teams on the bubble, plus RealMadrid. I forgot they had 5 teams in the CL this year.
   730. spivey 2 Posted: November 24, 2021 at 08:11 PM (#6054551)
I thought I grabbed that was the 4th criteria from Wikipedia, but it's not there. Even checked the history. Perhaps I'm slowly losing my mind.

A few really compelling head-to-heads that could go either way. All La Liga teams are underdogs to advance (except RealMadrid), but all 4 still have a very good shot. Wolfsburg has been right at 50% every week except for once, which is kind of wild. Dortmund went from very likely to advance to out in a single game.

There have been some decent surprises this year. Mostly it's La Liga being much weaker than in previous years, and Dortmund's late collapse.

We could have some very good teams falling to Europa this year.

Milan is being given a much bigger chance to win their game than I initially thought (or maybe the odds changed). They are at home in a game that is meaningless for Liverpool. Regardless, that changes the odds for advancement in that group.

Porto is about 55%, Atleti 24%, Milan 21%.

Winner betting odds:
city         22.5
bayern       18

liverpool    14
chelsea      12.5
psg          12

united        5
realmadrid    4
ajax          4

juve          2
inter         1.5
barca         1
atleti        1

field         2.5

Weird play in the Celtic game. Great cross in with a bunch of offensive and defensive players going for it, and the goalie coming out to punch. Goalie completely misses the ball on the punch--he's way off of it, and cleans out one of the Celtic players, who had no play on the ball either as it was touched by one of the closer players. Penalty given on VAR for what turned out to be a totally off the ball play. Unusual but probably the right call. Celtic scores the critical pen to draw level. They need at least a draw in Germany today to stay alive.

edit: The penalty was Celtic's only shot of the half. Leverkusen has been far more dangerous and will probably still win.

Just two shots for Spurs, trailing at the half against lowly Mura, one of the very weakest teams in the three Europe tiers this year. (ok the Red Imps are weaker, but you couldn't definitively say any other team was weaker.)

Oh Spurs have been playing with 10 since the 32nd minute. Finally drew level. Celtic amazingly have taken the lead. Some chances on the break this second half, and converted one of them.
   737. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 25, 2021 at 02:33 PM (#6054634)
Leverkusen scored twice late and Celtic is now probably done. They made it fun in Germany today, but were outclassed ultimately. In all honesty quite lucky to ever have been ahead in the first place. Their group will finish Leverkusen in first and Betis in second. Celtic down into the ECL, where maybe they'll even face Spurs in the first KO round.

edit: nevermind. Vitesse have scored a late goal to come back and draw Rennes in France. Big surprise there and may allow Spurs to win their group after all despite the draw today. A Spurs win in 2 weeks wins them a group, and in all likelihood they go out if they just draw. Finishing second is very unlikely.

edit2: what?! Spurs gave up a last second goal to Mura and lose!! So that's it for finishing first in the group. Rennes clinches. to advance at all, Spurs must win and hope Vitesse doesn't beat up on Mura.

Mura is probably roughly the level of a League 1 team. Maybe worse.
   739. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 25, 2021 at 03:25 PM (#6054637)
According to 538, Mura had 2 goals on 0.3 xG, and 0.0 non-shot xG. I've never even seen 1 goals on 0.0 non-shot xG, though maybe it's happened. Never heard of 2 goals being scored in a game like that.

538's website hasn't switched to the new tiebreakers yet, so they have a lot of percentages wrong. Including Spurs and Atleti.

Vitesse will in all likelihood beat Mura at home. So that means Spurs have to beat Rennes, who have nothing to play for, and it's in London. On top of that, Spurs would still lose out if Vitesse can catch them in GD by beating Mura by at least 2 more goals than Spurs wins by. Next tie breaker is goals scored, which Vitesse would likely at least match if they catch up on GD. After that it's group away goals where Vitesse would win, since both teams have played all their away games already.

Tottenham has Norwich at home, earlier in the week, and Brighton on the road 3 days after their home game to Rennes. We'll see how seriously they take it. As noted, even if they advance they have to face an extra KO round because they didn't manage to finish first in the group.

Rangers with the strong win to advance in second. Lyon won the group.

Monaco beat Real Socieded, so they advance in first as well. Brings up an extremely tasty Real Sociedad / PSV matchup, with PSV just needing a draw to advance. That group was the hardest, but you would have still expected Sociedad to advance. La Liga continues to struggle in Europe.

The other really tasty matchup is Leicester/Napoli. Napoli needs a win to advance, and Leicester would advance with just a draw, or even a loss if the other game ends in a draw. Can't count on that though.

Frankfurt and Olympiacos advance from the other group, though Frankfurt still has a bit of work to do to win it.

Rangnick sounds like he'll be the interim manager for Man U, then be involved in front office for the following 2 years. That is depressingly competent if it comes through.

Other bit of exciting news is the Euro WC playoff draws were announced. Italy and Portugal are in the same mini-bracket, so at least one of them will not make the WC.
   743. AuntBea odeurs de parfum de distance sociale Posted: November 26, 2021 at 12:13 PM (#6054663)
Draw:

Italy hosts North Macedonia
Portugal hosts Turkey, and the winner hosts the winner of the game above.

Scotland hosts Ukraine
Wales hosts Austria, and the winner hosts the winner above.

Sweden hosts Czech Republic
Russia hosts Poland, and the winner hosts the winner above.

None of these routes are that easy. Italy has the easiest first round game, but could be rewarded with Italy, on the road no less.
Scotland going on the road probably means they won't go through even if they beat Ukraine. (And how do you like that for North Macedonia? Valiantly earned second in their group only to have to go on the road against Italy and the likely again to Portugal, to make the WC.)

Italy and Portugal only have themselves to blame. Jorginho's late penalty miss against Switzerland (90th minute, skied well over) and Serbia's late goal against Portugal (also 90th minute, wide open on the back post) were the killers.

That’s some good matchups. I feel for North Macedonia and Turkey but it sets up a whopper of a winner take all match there. The other two groups look pretty open. I’d bet on Wales and Russia but really I think any of those 8 teams in those two mini-groups could go through.

They just had the incterconference WC draw. 4th in Concacaf faces Oceania (1-off in Qatar), which is a huge break for Concacaf, and means the US is now virtually certain to advance.

The other regions are likely to be much harder. One of Japan/Australia is the likely AFC representative, and Conmebol will have a very good team in the playoff, regardless of who it is.

Australia/Japan (and even Saudi Arabia, should they somehow manage to blow their lead in qualifying), and of course everyone in Conmebol, are all far better teams than New Zealand, and not even on the same planet as the rest of Oceania.

After getting 22 points in their first 10 games, West Brom has been swooning, with just 12 in their last 10 games. With Fulham and Bournemouth continuing to play very well, West Brom could be headed to the playoffs. Still pretty early of course.

I want Newcastle to go down as much as the next person, but I hardly think if they do it'll be some indictment of the new owners. This is a bad team, already slated to be relegated before the new owners took over, and we haven't even reached the January transfer window. Not sure there was a ton that could be done.

On the other side of the field, after this game Arsenal really might have the best xGD in the sub-league consisting of the 17 teams outside the top 3.

Yeah that's fantastic news, that's a hell of a get out of jail free card. I still think we advance fairly easily though out of the group.

With West Ham facing City tomorrow, by understat and statsbomb Arsenal will have the best xGD in the 17-team mini league, slightly ahead of West Ham. Palace and Wolves still have a half to make up the difference, but it's now highly unlikely. Leicester has more of a chance by stasbomb tomorrow home to Watford. Basically no chance for Leicester to catch up by understat.

Haaland just went on!! I thought he was out until January. Just a few days too late for the CL, sadly.

Leeds have not been good this year, and Brighton is running circles around them today. In a callback to last season, Brighton has missed a ton of good chances.

Juve lost at home to Atalanta, so are now 9th in Serie A, 7 points behind Atalanta in 4th. Probably no longer even expected to make top 4 by the end of the year.

Benfica played an exciting game today. Other club had a COVID outbreak reducing them to basically U-23 players only. They didn't request a postponement from the league though (presumably because of ticket sales since Benfica is one of the big matches for a small team).

Started the game with 9 players, including a GK in the outfield. Losing 7-0 at halftime, they came out super late from halftime with only 7 players, then someone immediately went down with "injury" forcing the game to be stopped. Portuguese League isn't one we keep tabs on here, but it's a completely legit league with good teams in it, and it's wild something like this happened in the first division.

I saw that 7-0 scoreline in passing. That's nuts.

wrong thread! a trend!

Well that’s insane. Is that just considered “no game” or is it a forfeit?

Speaking of "no games", Burnley/Spurs postponed due to heavy snow.
