OT Soccer Thread - Baldrick Reports Live

Sum-sum-summertime thread.

June 7 (that’s today!) - Women’s World Cup.  BTF correspondent Baldrick is on the scene (link takes you to his preview of the tournament)
June 14 - Copa America begins (no Neymar)
June 15 - Gold Cup begins
June 18 - US first Gold Cup game
June 21 - Africa Cup of Nations begins
July 7 - Women’s World Cup Final/Copa America Final/Gold Cup Final - Can we get some discussion about the ridiculousness of the WWC being just one of a series of finals on the same day? Of note is that the Copa America final is the exact same time as the WWC final.
July 19 - Africa Cup of Nations final

I suppose it is inevitable he will end up at Sunderland at some point.

Ouch! He can do at a job but I never understood why Chelsea signed him instead of getting one of their million loan players a chance since he was never going to be more than a squad player. I'm guessing his wages make a move to a mid table team difficult. A team like Burnley could really use him.

It looks to all the world like Juan Foyth just mangled his Achilles tendon.

My favorite part of the shootout was when Kane buried a hard kick in the upper left corner of the goal, and then Müller put the next kick in exactly the same spot. It was the penalty kick equivalent of an ostentatious yawn.

Transfer news, or bullshit?

Ya never know with Spurs ...

18.19 BST: Could Tottenham swoop in and steal Bruno Fernandes from Man United?

RTP reports that Spurs have an emissary in Lisbon working to sign the 24-year-old and that the London club are set to make a proposal. Sporting have told United they will not accept anything less than €65 million for the Portuguese attacking midfielder who amassed 32 goals and 18 assists over all competitions last season.

But also ...

15.33 BST: Spanish newspaper El Transistor claims Spurs have agreed a fee of €60m (£54.6m) with Real Betis for Giovani Lo Celso.

Lo Celso, 23, only joined Betis last summer from PSG after a loan spell but is now on his way to White Hart Lane. Maybe that will ensure Mauricio Pochettino is happy...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bullshit.

Bruno Fernandes is good, but my understanding of his game and statistical profile is, in NBA terms, a high usage gunner with questionable efficiency. I'd much rather, if Eriksen were leaving, get someone like Olmo, even Ziyech. And they'd be way cheaper to boot.

Also definitely would prefer Lo Celso vs. Fernandes if we could only get one, knowing what limited info I know.

So annoyed that Sane appears to be inching towards Bayern. I just really don't get it.

Fernandez is Levy's way of getting Betis to drop the LoCelso price.

It was like the Jays this week saying they were going to extend Stroman the day before they traded him.

Both amateur bargaining.

ESPNFC

19.34 BST: We discussed Newcastle's pursuit of Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin earlier and now we have an update.

Sky Sports News understands that Newcastle is "very close" to signing the France Under-21 winger. Thew report adds that the Magpies will pay a £16.5 million rising to £20m for the 22-year-old.

Newcastle have finally opened up the pocketbooks, if only they hadn't already lost Rafa Benitez...

I'd say it's more likely Spurs are bargain hunting while United negotiate with Dybala. They do this every summer and it hasn't really worked since Van der Vaart. But if it gets us one VDV every decade, what the hell. I think it's too late for any massive signings for Spurs. Hopefully Sessegnon gets done but the squad is pretty much the squad (barring Eriksen or Rose leaving).

what the hell.

More like WTF?

I swear there must be times when dealing with Daniel Levy must feel like being Graham Chapman in this scene ...

Most of what Arsenal have done this summer seems like good business. Pepe widens their attack significantly and should have a positve impact on Lacazette and Aubameyang by giving them better service. Spreading out the payments is smart for a team with limited cash resourcs. Ceballos isn't identical to Ramsey, but he covers some of that link-up gap within their budget. If they can get Tierney, that's another talented young player.

The thing that boggles my mind is what they are doing in central defense. They played 3 at the back a lot at the end of last year because they were basically out of playable defenders. They still only have Mustafi, Sokratis, Holding (injured), and Chambers as options. United are desperate for a CB and they have multiple options who are better than anyone Arsenal has. What is the plan there?
