OTP 2018 October 15: The shift in focus from sport to politics

Since I’m hinting at it, here’s my shameless plug: if you can sit through four hours of football and its stoppage time, you can’t justify calling baseball boring. October belongs to America’s pastime. I feel that this whole landscape will look different a decade from now, with football at the lower half of the totem pole.

My opinion isn’t entirely biased. This issue with politics bleeding into the discussion is a serious crutch for an otherwise praised NFL, and until that’s no longer a factor, people are going to shift away. The NBA waters are nice these days too, I’m hearing.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy. Must change laws!

The convoy is going to arrive at the border on November 5th, isn't it?

I would agree that immigrants constitute national energy, at least potential. Anyone can make a typo, I guess.

I wonder what Trump would say if the Mexican army just slaughtered all of them outright.
   1506. Zonk didn't order a hit on an ambassador Posted: October 22, 2018 at 09:31 AM (#5772254)
Heh - didn't even notice the typo.

I was more wondering exactly what laws he was proposing be changed to deal with a caravan of activists moving through Mexico.... well, not wondering, gravely concerned maybe.

“I find it impossible to believe that the crown prince was not involved, so go after him and his inner circle,” he told Fox News. “Save the alliance. I don’t mind military sales but I cannot do business with the current leadership. MBS — he’s done to me. … I never felt more used in my life. I introduced him when he was in Washington.”

Highly doubtful. They appear to be mostly walking. Google maps has walking time and distance from the Guatemala border to Brownsville, TX at 356 hours/1753 km. No way they can walk that in 2 weeks.

Nice to see that Lindsay Graham's finally found an authoritarian thug he can stand up to, even if he's safely 6,700 miles away.

Hard to see that the caravan isn't some kind of planned operation, somehow, somewhere. Inconceivable that spontaneous and organic.

Go ahead, blame Soros. You know you want to.

Duh.

Considering they've been doing it since 2010 and considering it's actually a protest march I think it probably is "planned".

Thank you for your keen insight.

If it has any government backing, said governments are "interfering in our elections."

"Protest march," lol. Across international borders. Looks more like an invasion of Mexico.
   1515. Zonk didn't order a hit on an ambassador Posted: October 22, 2018 at 09:54 AM (#5772271)
I've uncovered the planning culprits!

They tried to hide by claiming responsibility for planning and organizing it, but I saw through their ruse!!!!

I don't see it. If for no other reason than the timing. This helps Trump and the Republicans. It gives them a major talking point with which to rile up the base. A year ago, even 6 months ago, sure. It would be a not insanely ridiculous assertion (merely implausibly ridiculous) that this was being funded/organized by pro Den interests, in order to embarrass Trump. But not now. Unless something changes with their mode of transportation, they won't even be here, if they ever get here, until well after the mid-terms.

It would be more plausible, but still ridiculous, that this was organized by pro Repub interests.

I bet the liberals placed an ad in the Guatemala Times soliciting the unskilled, criminals, and middle-easterners.

Good!

Like I said, it wasn't spontaneous and organic.

And note the organization's "dream":

"To build solidarity bridges among peoples and turn down border walls imposed by greed."

In other words, to invade other countries.
   1521. PreservedFish Posted: October 22, 2018 at 10:06 AM (#5772284)
Yes, they are invading, with the intent to peaceably settle and become productive members of society.

I would assume the reaction of your average Democratic congressional candidate is "why does this have to happen days before the election!"

If it has any government backing, said governments are "interfering in our elections."

You mean the Guatemalan government? I don't immediately see how this benefits them, but if we need a pretext to take a closer look at Guatemalan politics it can't hurt. The president is in a battle with the UN-supported judiciary to crack down on corruption and organized crime. If this sparks US interest in backing anti-corruption efforts (rather than endorsing the shut down of the CICIG) then that might be a good thing.
