Pablo Sandoval plays role of Giants’ director of recruiting in offseason

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — On the surface, it appears that the Giants are getting a bunch of old Padres together. Drew Pomeranz. Rene Rivera. Yangervis Solarte. Cameron Maybin.

Put perhaps the real link among most the free agent additions is a player who has years of experience facing the Padres.

Solarte, who checked into camp Sunday, said he spent the offseason working out with Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval at the Bommarito gym in Miami. Parra and Rivera also worked out there, along with Dereck Rodriguez, Sandoval’s prized recruit last offseason.

Mind you, he probably should start thinking about career changes, and he certainly has the build of someone in HR….

Spend the offseason "working out" with Panda -- sign me up!

Does Sandoval ever come up on "Worst contract" discussions? $94 mil for -2.5 WAR.

He comes up all the time. Hard to beat Howard's extension and Josh Hamilton in terms of notoriety though. (not to mention Pujols, Miggy and ARod II.) Well, outside of Boston that is. Might be the most inexplicable of those.

Question for Sox Therapy -- which do Sox fans tend to ridicule more, the Crawford deal or the Panda deal?

The Panda deal. Squint and one could maybe see some sort of reasoning behind the Crawford signing.
But Panda was in many ways inexplicable and generally reviled from the start.
And I say this as a guy that was a moderate in the discussion (IIRC, I saw a long term plan of Hanley replacing Ortiz at DH and Panda sliding over to first and bouncing 40+ doubles off the wall for a few years. Not my best prognostication)

Seconded. THe Crawford deal had plenty of reason to like it. Sandoval was a disaster waiting to happen and on top of signing Hanley Ramirez the same day it made little sense from a team construction standpoint. Of course I never thought it would be THAT bad. I will say I was strongly in favor of the Crawford deal so do with that what you will.

I think it’s fair to say the general consensus though was Panda wasn’t a particularly popular move even when it happened.

Who was the Red Sox caught doing b.s. stuff on line during the game? Was that Sandoval?

Yes -- he was looking at some BS site called Baseball Chimp Factory or something like that.

Yeah, as a Sox fan, my number one priority going into that offseason, was for them to not sign Sandoval. Every other decision I could have accepted. I had a similar feeling going into last offseason about Hosmer.

I may not always be right about who I do want them to sign. But I think I pretty much have a 100% track record on who I don't want them to sign.

Sandoval was on Tinder while taking a dump during a game. A literal dump, not the figurative one he took every time he attempted to provide any positive value on the field.

[3] Question for Sox Therapy -- which do Sox fans tend to ridicule more, the Crawford deal or the Panda deal?

Panda, and it's not close. Two reasons. First, the Crawford deal could have worked out. The Panda deal was never going to go well. Really soured my impression of that FO. Second, the Sox were able to wriggle out of the Crawford fiasco in the Nicky Punto deal with LA. So they never really paid the piper on that one.
