Veteran slugger Nelson Cruz has agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with the Padres, a source told MLB.com’s Shaun O’Neill on Wednesday, adding a little more thump to a lineup that has brought Xander Bogaerts and Matt Carpenter aboard this winter. The club has not confirmed the move.
For years, Cruz held Father Time at bay more effectively than almost any player in baseball history. A late bloomer who didn’t establish himself in the Majors until his late 20s, Cruz made up for lost time by bashing 292 home runs from ages 33-40—more than anyone other than Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro and Babe Ruth. He also earned five of his seven career All-Star selections in that time, as well as all four of his Silver Slugger Awards.

After May & June, I thought Cruz might have just been a victim of the lockout-shortened spring straining causing a slow start, but his 2nd half suggested Father Time had finally caught up with him. However, Cruz apparently had an eye problem that necessitated off-season surgery, so maybe he can rebound a bit. Presumably, the Padres thought the medicals indicated Cruz was worth taking a chance on.
I'm leaning towards the latter myself but I don't get to test my stuff out at the comedy store.
I'm not sure Cruz, with a positive test in his past, is the best babysitter. Now, if you meant "can provide Tatis Jr. with his source for no-ban enhancement, then....sure, great buy.
Biogenesis scandal, wasn't it?
The idea of working in San Diego, and playing on a young and exciting team, sounds pretty appealing to me.
Canseco is an interesting close comp. A much bigger star and figure in baseball history, but in terms of his overall impact ... Cruz and Canseco both have exactly 42.5 bWAR. After looking at their career lines for a few minutes I am very confused and have to keep checking to see that I'm not just looking at the same one twice.

The late 80s called, they'd like their lingo back. :-)
Players said similarly good things about late Manny and Giambi.
