Padres deep in talks to get Scherzer

Nationals ace Max Scherzer may soon be on his way to the Padres. A trade is not done, but San Diego is “working to acquire” the three-time Cy Young Award winner, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Thursday. Neither club has confirmed the news.

Scherzer, who turned 37 on Tuesday, earned his eighth All-Star nod this season and has a career 3.19 ERA and 182-97 record.

Taken by Arizona with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 Draft, Scherzer is in the final year of a seven-year, $191.4 million contract signed before the 2015 season.

Scherzer was chatting amiably in the Nationals dugout until a couple of minutes ago, but has reportedly now departed. Bathroom break or major trade?

Can’t believe the Dodgers/giants would let the Padres pull this off but then again scherzer may not be healthy either

Scherzer went to drop a deuce.

BREAKING NEWS: Scherzer has returned to the Nationals dugout, and is idly tossing a baseball while blowing bubbles. Maybe adopting a Southern California vibe?

He looked pretty healthy this afternoon.

Really glad I got see him win one more for the Nats.

The Dodgers are supposedly getting Danny Duffy from the Royals. Hopefully, this leaves Jon Gray on the Rockies where he belongs.

It would be cool if the Rockies could have a non-terrible pitcher spend an entire long not-terrible career in that launching pad. Is he gonna get an extension?

Patrick Saunders from the Denver Post:

I asked #Rockies Bud Black if he would make a pitch for Jon Gray to re-sign with the Rox:

"Yes. But again, it takes two to tango. And there is a lot that goes into (negotiations). .... But if Jon wants to make this happen, it can happen."

Rockies also have German Marquez, signed through 2023, and Kyle Freeland, who can't be a free agent till 2024. Between the three of them, one would hope the Rockies record for career wins is in trouble.

Team record is 86 by Jorge De La Rosa. Gray has 51, Marquez 50, they are in the top 10.

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers are making significant progress on a deal that would send them star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a prospect-laden return, sources tell ESPN.[emphasis added]
Turner is only 28 and has another year of team control. Seems like it would take a lot to get him along with the Scherzer rental. The Nationals would do better to extend Turner rather than trade him, IMHO.

Supposedly the Nats have tried to extend Turner but it isn’t working, which is what the Nats always say.

These prospects had better be something special. The Dodgers are going to have too many infielders, or am I missing something here?
   13. Rally Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:43 PM (#6031393)
Dodger infielders can all play the outfield, and their outfielders can play the infield. That’s just how that team works.

Looks like Scherzer and Turner to the Dodgers is a done deal.

13 Makes it interesting to watch them. What a haul for the Dodgers.

They miss Hernandez (relatively speaking); having a real nice year for the Bosox

C Ruiz and SP Gray are the best pair of can't-miss prospects I can remember ever going in the same trade.
both are ready now.

but then again, I've never seen a team deal studs like Scherzer AND TTurner in the same deal, ever, for prospects.

I wouldn’t call the #41 & 42 rated-prospects ‘can’t miss’. That seems more like a Top 10 or Top 20 designation. In any event, the Nationals’ Fire Sale has become a full-scale conflagration - reliever Daniel Hudson, who closed out their 2019 World Series triumph, is reportedly going to San Diego for Mason Thompson & Jordy Barley. Yan Gomes & Josh Harrison are also rumored to be on the move. Juan Soto may be rather lonely by the deadline.
