Padres send Luis Urias to Brewers, get Trent Grisham, Zach Davies

Urias is a second baseman who is presumably being moved to SS.  This deal opens a hole at second for the Friars.  And while obviously Urias isn’t a 398/600 hitter (like he was at El Paso last year), he looked to have second nailed down in a Placido Polanco sort of way.  Their outfield does need help, in part because they traded Franmil Reyes (who, to be fair, really is a DH). Padres also gave up Eric Lauer to get Zach Davies.  That part of the deal is fine, if kind of boring.

I guess I don’t see why the Padres did this.  Kinsler is obviously toast, so they don’t really have a second baseman anymore.  It looks like Esteban Quiroz has the inside track on the second base job, but he’s not a long-term solution.  Long term they’re probably looking at Xavier Edwards, who is promising and all, but is also 19.  C.J. Abrams is also a middle infielder, but has yet to appear in a professional game.  They could be looking for stop-gap guys at second for a long time.

Yeah, I agree this is hard to understand for the Padres. Even if they don't like Urias, seems like they could have gotten more.

It’s rare to see a prospect like this traded so young so the Padres have concluded he has some fatal flaw. Hard to believe they couldn’t get more

I thought this sounded like a bad deal for the Mets. I would give Grisham more upside than Urias.

Woohoo! A trade!

Seems like a weird decision for the Padres. Maybe they see Grisham as viable as an everyday CF, and they’ve lost patience with Margot?

I do like Quiroz, FWIW. Think he’ll be fine in the short term.

When I see someone make a decision that puzzles me, I ask myself “what must they believe for this decision to make

So looking at this from the Padres point of view, I think they must believe the following:

1. Urias is overrated as a prospect and will likely be a busy
2. Grisham has a bright future
3. Grisham was an obvious trade chit for the Brewers thus the need to

Odd trade. Urias seems to have been a consensus top-20 prospect before 2019, and Grisham seems to have been totally un-ranked.

I don't see anything either one did in 2019 to change that assessment. Both raked in the minors and were OK is the bigs.
