Padres star rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. will ‘most likely’ miss rest of year with back injury

PHILADELPHIA – San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a back injury that “most likely” will end his season, according to manager Andy Green.

The 20-year-old Tatis, a Rookie of the Year candidate, is batting .317 with 13 doubles, 22 homers and 53 RBI in 84 games. Green said the injury was the result of “common usage” and that it would require rest to heal.

“It’s disappointing, obviously,” Green said. “We’re going to do what we can to take care of him, and we expect him to be a huge part of what we’re doing going forward. It’s been really tough for him the last couple of days to swallow. It’s a tough blow.”

Green said Tatis will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Ouch. A major back injury at age 20. I'm sure he'll still look good at times going forward, but if there was an over/under for his future production before the injury, I'd take the under now.

With Tatis going on the shelf, what's the take on the Pads' season?

I didn't expect too much from them (playing .500 ball, maybe), but they've slightly underachieved my meh expectations.

I didn't expect too much from them (playing .500 ball, maybe), but they've slightly underachieved my meh expectations.

With this injury to Tatis and Paddack tailing off in the second half things seem to be ending on a sour note. They probably are going to end up in the 65-72 win range that they have been living in for the entire decade. It will be interesting to see what they do in the offseason. They need competent starting pitching, but it is unclear how much money they have to spend.

Yeah, this sucks. And coming after he already missed 30+ games with a hamstring injury. Hamstrings and backs injuries both have a bad habit of recurring. :(

Finishing with just 72 wins would be low given where they are now. 65 would require a Tigeresque finish.

Hamstrings and backs injuries both have a bad habit of recurring. :(

Yes. Without Tatis and with Paddack tailing off this is a very bad team that is worse than their current record. That was the point of my comment.
