Padres To Fire Manager Jayce Tingler

Breaking news. I’m not sure if I’m impressed that the Padres decided to do this as soon as possible, or disgusted that they couldn’t even wait until after the weekend.

I’d love to be the fly on the wall when tingler called up to preller to ask about the rumors and AJ told him rumors of his firing are premature !

I think Tingler is gone. Rojas and Boone haven't done anything glaringly wrong, but it's New York so either might go.
Called it!

Yeah I can’t see Tingler coming back. The Padres were a huge disappointment. It may not be his fault but fair’s got nothing to do with it.

This is interesting ... note how consistent those FIPs are (FIP then ERA):

Musgrove 3.74 3.22
Darvish 3.90 4.22
Snell 3.82 4.20
Paddack 3.77 5.07

Seems like Preller has a pitcher type. Anyway, while the rotation hasn't been bad (when healthy), it hasn't been nearly as good as it was supposed to be. The starting lineup has several blah players but no major holes but the bench has been not good. Presumably this is a prelude to Preller finally being fired if the Padres disappoint again next year.

You know what they say. You can't fire 25 ....... statisticians.

Jayce Tingler had a small cult following among Toronto prospect hounds during the early '00s JP Ricciardi Blue Jays and the dawning of Moneyball and the sabermetric enlightenment.

I recall he was nicknamed the "Walking Man" or something similar.

He was a low-A ball CF from 2003-06, drafted out of the 10th round.

There was lots of sabermetrics discussion at the time among enthusiasts whether a player with no power but obscene low minors walk rates could succeed.

Tingler seem to stall at age 25 in AA ball putting up a .532 OPS over 112 PAs and presumably retiring.

His career minor league line though is an impressive 271/378/322, OPS .701 over 1778 PAs, but a mind-boggling 221:95 walk to strikeout ratio.

How long until Preller is the guy fired? Premature?

Dave Cameron for GM!
Votto is still around and playing well. Michael Pineda is, too, so maybe Cameron can finally pull off that trade he dreamed up for the Mariners ten years ago.

Gotta figure he was gone as soon as Tatis and Machado had that highly-visible fight - the primary job for the manager of a team like the one the Padres are trying to be is to manage superstar personalities, and if he wasn't doing that, well, what's he there for? I seem to recall that there were stories about how this was a tense clubhouse in the aftermath, although people soon found other things to talk about.

If Bochy's legitimately interested in returning or the Astros let Baker go, it seems like you pounce, because who else is out there that you know has that skillset? And how do you find the ones who do? It's not exactly something you learn managing in the minor leagues, although maybe GMs are keeping a list of clubhouse leaders (like Dave Ross, I guess). Terry Francona seemed to need to fail with the Phillies to learn how to be the right guy for the Red Sox and Guardians.

clubhouse leaders

We can work out a deal for player-manager Jason Heyward ...

If a manager is mainly a button-pushing personality wrangler these days, maybe a player could handle it.That might save the Marlins a few hundred thousand if it was the right guy.

I don't know if that's a manager's "main" job, but it seems to be a necessary part of it; getting young guys who have never really failed at anything, get paid ten times more than you, and have job security you don't to follow you and work as a group strikes me as a lot harder than choosing when to pinch-hit.
   12. sunday silence (again) Posted: October 03, 2021 at 07:34 AM (#6043195)
why do they work as a group? Baseball has one of the least team oriented actions of any sport. YOu hit the baseball: that's you against a baseball. You catch a baseball: that's you against a flying object. You run bases on your own. You throw the ball on your own.

This is one of the main reasons that the game is so amendable to statistical analysis, unlike football or basketball, you don't really have to account for teammates when you're measuring hitting or running; fielding there's some issues of course.

I guess there's pitcher/catcher, double plays, pickoffs, and relay throws you have communicate.

Ownership extended him until 2026 in the spring to reward his off-season accomplishments. Another premature decision!

The athletic wrote a long article on his supposed character flaws and it didn’t come across as too damning:

1. Hires too many cronies! (Who doesn’t - don’t you want your own people around you?)
2. Doesn’t listen to opposing opinions (counterpoint. In the article - always asks for opposing opinions)
3. Runs the manager from the front office (isn’t this the way of baseball now?)
4. A bad talent evaluator…..except when he’s a good talent evaluator. This makes him exactly equivalent to every other GM
5. Traded the farm to go all-in? Isn’t that what fans want from our GMs?

It strikes me in reading it that the owner puts too much deference in AJ and that they need to have a stronger manager to provide a counter-weight. That seems like an easy thing to do. The question is whether Preller can live with an “independent” manager.

I live in SD. I have no idea whether Bochy would want the job, but the Padres should open up the wallet and see. Bochy is 66, but with LaRussa and Baker helming division winners, that really ain't no thing. Bochy lives in SD county.

As to Preller, I think he will be out if the team has another crap year, extension or no. I think fans here will expect around 90 wins and serious WC contention as a floor in '22.

Dave Cameron for GM!

Here's a weird thing: I used to see Dave Cameron at the dog part a lot. He was usually sitting at a picnic bench, using his laptop.
