Report: Billy Beane to Leave A’s, Focus on Sports Business Ventures

Oakland Athletics executive Billy Bean is slated to leave the organization in order to pursue opportunities outside MLB, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond, Joshua Robinson and Miriam Gottfried.

Beane, 58, is currently the co-chair of RedBall Acquisition Corp, which is set to merge with Fenway Sports Group. Beane will partner with Red Sox owner John Henry in the deal, though Beane will not take a position running the Red Sox, per the Wall Street Journal.

The architect of the Moneyball A’s will likely turn his attention to other sports ventures, specifically European soccer. Beane recently purchased a stake in the Dutch soccer club AZ Alkmaar on Oct. 9.

The timing is as if he was waiting out Joe Morgan before leaving Oakland.

In a statement Mr. Beane stated that he was able to lead a vanguard of executives to turn the world's greatest sport into the one of the most boring. By turning his focus to soccer he is now accepting the challenge to take the world's most boring sport to lower depths.

Beane is probably leaving to write a sequel to his book, "Moneyball."

Can he please take the curse with him?

Would be kind of funny if the A's get to the playoffs again within 3 seasons and get to the WS. Be even funnier if they did it by playing like mid decade Royals.

If any team played like that now I would be cheering for them.
