Padres trade for versatile Matt Beaty from Dodgers

The Padres and Dodgers swung a rare trade on Monday, with Matt Beaty headed to San Diego in exchange for Minor League infielder/pitcher River Ryan.

Beaty, who was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Wednesday, should fill a useful role in San Diego. The Padres are short on outfield options, particularly in left field, and their bench needed a boost, too. Beaty, a left-handed hitter with a knack for reaching base, posted a .270/.363/.402 slash line across 120 games last season.

“He’s a professional at-bat,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said of Beaty. “He’s got a high on-base percentage, the kind of guy that takes a lot of pitches. Could see him as a pinch-hitter potentially. He can play a little outfield, a little first base, so he’s got some versatility there.

He would start over Hosmer in many rational examinations....just saying.

I'm not sure. Hosmer last year had a 104 OPS+ and -4 fielding runs in 565 PA last year. Beaty in his career has a 101 OPS+ and -11 fielding runs in 556 PA. Beaty is 3 years younger, so maybe, but it's not bleeding obvious.

BTW, there are few phrases in all sports I despise more than "professional hitter."

.363 last year, which is nice. .278 inn 2020, and .317 in 2019.

Many doesn't even mean "most". I think Beaty and Hosmer's prospects in 2022 are comparable. Hosmer probably has the better chance of being well-above average. But, I think Hosmer also has a better chance of dropping another cliff and being in the "OMG, he's in a Pujols/Cabrera contract, without ever actually being great like them" category.

But how does that argument mean that Beaty is more likely to play over Hosmer?

Or more specifically what exactly does "many rational examinations" mean?

ZiPS
Beaty 256/327/399, 95 OPS+, 0.2 zWAR (in LA)
Hosmer 257/316/387, 93 OPS+, 0.5 zWAR (in SD)

"OMG, he's in a Pujols/Cabrera contract

For crying out loud, he's owed 4/$60. That's "Meh, he's not even close to a Schwarber contract."

3. Sports phrases that bother me

-- "he's been trying to do too much" or "he's just keeping it simple" or "it's just see the ball, hit the ball"
-- they are taking it one game at a time
-- these guys have all the momentum right now
-- "he gives 110% out there" OR "he finds so many ways to beat you"
-- "boy, he's really like to have that one back"and the corollary " he's really dialed in right now"
-- "he can't walk this guy because the tying run is in the on deck circle"

I'll take "Stuff that no one says anymore for $100, Jack".
