Padres unveil new brown and gold color scheme

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brown is back for the San Diego Padres.

The Padres unveiled new uniforms Saturday night that feature a brown and gold color scheme, similar to the one used from the franchise’s inception in 1969 through 1984.

The new uniforms were unveiled at Petco Park in front a few thousand fans by players Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado.

Machado modeled the home white uniform with brown pinstripes that included the word Padres in brown on the front, trimmed in gold.

What can brown do for you, other than win the NL West?

I'd describe that as 'tan and gold' rather than 'brown and gold'.

I vote for any Padres uniform that has Manny's tattoos as background camouflage.

Browns and tans match the landscape of the desert that they call San Diego. At least it's not more red and blue like every other team.

Fans have clamored for years for a return to the brown

Any other Ween fans around these parts? Would love to hear Poopship Destoyer as Machado's walk-up music.

Maybe it's because I'm old enough to remember when the Padres came into existence, but I really like these. My first thought was this is what the Padres should look like. I never liked teams completely changing their color scheme, especially when it leads to things like the Astros awful, hideous brick red period. Ugh.

Didn’t the Padres ditch the brown & yellow colors because they tired of the ‘poop & piss’ comparisons? Must be counting on people being more mature these days.

So the Padres and Diamondbacks have both made uniform changes, eh? Color me surprised. How long has it been since either of them used the same uniforms two years in a row?

A-plus.

I love them.

The Nike logo is more prominent/intrusive than any of the previous manufacturers’, no?

Padres' fans out here mostly wanted the old colors back, especially season-ticket holders, some of whom were very vocal about it. The color combo may be "ugly" on some level, but the scheme is both distinctive and retro, a good combo for marketing. You saw more brown-and-gold gear on the street than the newer stuff, even before the change.

‘poop & piss’ comparisons?

You are confusing the Padres' colors with the quality of your own posts.

The '85-90 color scheme with the '91-03 uniform template is, was, and will always be the way to go.

These are great, I like them a lot.

The first time I saw the Padres on TV in the 1991 season, I about wrecked the TV trying to re-adjust the color settings.

It really doesn't say much for the fashion history of your franchise when you have to go back to McDonald's brown-and-yellow. Ideally that would be a brief, laughable failed gimmick like the White Sox' shorts rather than a sartorial highlight.

Isnt this just the PIT color scheme from the late 70s?

Nice.

I do not like the swinging friar logo, but that is a small price to pay for these unis.

Have they ever played a game in actual monks' habits? That would be terrific.

The Pirates have never, ever used brown as one of their colors.

I was worried these would be really bad, but they're actually pretty good.

I don't think people actually consider it a highlight, though. It's some combination of nostalgia for a time when the Padres had a unique identity before joining half of all teams in using blue as their primary color and bad-things-are-good-actually kitsch.

Call it "Ironic Brown." The Padres have also offered a bonus to any player who grows a mullet and a mustache.

Is that Encyclopedia Brown's hipster cousin?
