Palm Beach Post: Pitching machine overpowers hitters

Pitching machine 1, 2006 Marlins 0.

The Marlins’ prospects fighting for positions finally made their spring debut Tuesday in an intrasquad game. The biggest star? A pitching machine that recorded five strikeouts. “The machine was outstanding,’’ quipped Wayne Rosenthal, the team’s minor-league pitching coordinator.
...
Manager Joe Girardi wanted to save pitchers for exhibition games, so bullpen coach Pierre Arsenault fed baseballs into the machine from atop the mound…  “You can ask me about my off-season and you can ask me about my wife but just don’t ask me about my performance today,’’ said catcher Matt Treanor, one of the strikeout victims.

The Marlins immediately made it known that the pitching machine was available and that they were looking for a couple top minor league radar guns in return.

Heck, I remember back in the mid-to-late 1990's when the Blue Jays' batting tee threw a two-hitter and led the pitching staff in ERA.

Shoot, Carlos Garcia and Alex Gonzalez both took the golden sombrero.

Best Regards

I knew Treanor's wife was someone famous. He's married to Misty May, the beach volleyball player.

you can ask me about my wife

I'm sure he gets a lot of questions about professional beach volleyball.

"What's Karch Kiraly really like?"
"Who's a better player, Kerri Walsh or Holly McPeak?"
"Can you hook me up with Sinjin Smith's autograph?"

...and on and on. The mind boggles at the quantity of professional beach volleyball questions he must get on a daily basis.

And, BTW, I'm sick of players like Matt Treanor and Albert Belle taking all the hot women for themselves.

I fully expect that A-rod will force his wife to take up beach volleyball so A-rod can fit in.

As someone who's been struck out countless times by a pitching machine, let me say that it can be harder to hit against the machine sometimes, especially when it throws all breaking balls. You can't see the the pitcher's windup or the ball coming out of a hand, so it's also harder to pick up the ball's rotation.

I hate pitching machines.

Man, I remember playing some old beach volleyball computer game against Sinjin Smith and some other guy on my top-of-the-line 286. I remember my strategy was to bring both guys to the net, then peel one back when they invariably tipped it.

The cool thing about beach volleyball, versus some crappy sport like non-modern pentathalon or baseball, is that it's a certified, honest to God Olympic event. Treanor's just referring to the attention his wife gets for that every four years. Why, even in this Winter O year they're still innundated with media requests. He's just happy to be at camp away from the hoopla.

I think Pitching Machine might be Diet Pepsi Machine's first cousin.

This machine wouldn't by any chance be named HAL, would it?

One summer at baseball camp, when momentarily left unsupervised, we set the ultra-advanced pitching machine for 100MPH sidearm breaking stuff. The first pitch moved like two feet and drilled the kid right on the bean; I guess it wasn't calibrated for the fake rubber balls we were using.

It knocked him clean over sideways, and he was still wobbly for the better part of an hour. Good times.
