Passan: How velocity is ruling this postseason—and who is bringing the most heat in this World Series [$]

Sub required.

Welcome to Major League Baseball, 2022 style, where if you don’t throw hard, you probably don’t throw much at all. Gone with few exceptions are the nibblers and soft-tossers, relics of a time when only the finest fastballs kissed 90 mph, replaced by live arms that reliably launch bolts. Back in 2008, the first year MLB tracked all pitch data, pitchers threw three fastballs of 100 mph or greater in the playoffs. This year, there have already been 164. And with Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park postponed because of rain in Philadelphia, the teams’ rested bullpens will only add to the list.

It’s not just the top-end arms or elite relievers. The average starter is throwing 94.9 mph this October. Relievers, even generally anonymous ones, are at 95.9 mph. It’s everyone. In 2008, the postseason’s hardest thrower was Bobby Jenks, whose fastball averaged 97.5 mph. This postseason alone, 17 pitchers have faster average heaters than Jenks’. Five years ago, 27 of the 100 playoff pitchers sat above 95 mph. This year, it’s 68 of 131—more than half.

Veloctober isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon. Every year, fastball velocity ticks up between the regular season and the postseason, though never has it been as pronounced as it is this year—a 1.7 mph jump from the regular-season average of 93.6. The takeaway is clear: If a team wants to contend in this age of baseball, it needs an army of hard throwers to compete with other teams working to amass the same.

“Bigger, stronger and faster—they figured out how to do it,” Robertson said. “They dissected the game so much and figured out how to do what only a few guys could do before.”

OBJECTION! your Honor. While Rocktober, Choctober, Shocktober and Schlocktober all work, "veloctober" is an abomination unto the Lord.

Time for my regular rant on halving the height of the mound to 5 inches to restore the balance between pitchers and hitters.

The 12-year-olds I umpire in Little League don't get to pitch from a hill; why should grown men?

The height of the mound should definitely be lowered. But honestly, I'm not sure it would have more than a 1-2 year effect. Pitching has changed so much with technology helping them develop hellish repertoires they can use for fewer pitches. I think there should be a 9 inning pitcher limit (3-4 pitchers) that have to be picked from the active roster before game time, with one additional pitcher only in the event of extra innings, so that teams have to get more innings from pitchers

Sorry, the winner, now and forever, is Subway's promotion: Anytober.

And I think we can all admit now that Glocktober was a mistake.

I don’t care if they tweak the mound height but while I’d like to see pitcher substitutions reduced, I hate the idea of arbitrary limits on pitchers used. What do you do if your 4th pitcher gets hurt on the mound?

Instead why not call retain unlimited substitutions but make it a balk if substituting for a pitcher within the inning? Besides forcing managers to use fewer pitchers, it basically eliminates matchups based on handedness, both of which should increase batting averages. And almost as importantly, it would speed the pace of games. It wouldn’t entirely eliminate mid inning replacements, there will certainly be intentional walk situations where the manager can swap the pitcher when the balk would cost the same.

If that’s too extreme you could only call a balk on the second mid inning pitching change, so managers always have the ability to pull their starter without penalty instead of waiting for them to get the third out. Or limit it to a single “free” pitching substitution per inning.

I’d like to see things calibrated a little more back to workhorse pitchers from specialists. If you can only get right (or left) handers out, maybe you shouldn’t be pitching. If a relief pitcher can’t make it through an inning regularly maybe the team should get them in better shape. Let’s see if these guys can throw 105 if they always have to go through full innings. Let’s see if teams really want to pull their starters so quickly if forced to use backup pitchers longer.
