Pat Connaughton’s First Pitch Attempt Proves He Was Right to Give Up Baseball

In 2014, Pat Conaughton faced a very difficult decision. He had been picked in the fourth round of the MLB draft by the Orioles as a pitcher and had to decide whether he should quit playing basketball at Notre Dame and commit fully to baseball or hold out hope he could make it in the NBA. He ultimately decided on basketball and is now a key bench contributor for the Bucks.

Judging by Connaughton’s performance at Wednesday night’s Brewers game, he made the right decision.

Mind you, he still did far better than I would if placed in the same position….

He's no Jordan Leandre. Watch to the end because at least the photographer got a really cool photo out of it.

I dunno, I think he'd still slot pretty well in the Orioles' 2019 rotation if he'd decided to stick around.

The man is one heck of an athlete, though. He tied for the second highest vertical leap in the history of the NBA combine.

This is a boring take, but the obvious lesson here is that ceremonial first pitches are more difficult than they sound. (Dude had a 2.45 ERA during his brief stint in the NY-P)

Huh. Turns out a "rising fastball" actually is possible.

Heck, as a 26-year-old ex-pitcher who had enough talent to be taken in the fourth round of the MLB draft, he couldn't possibly be a ton worse than Chris Tillman was last year.
