Patrick Wisdom hits two more homers, continues to be ‘a real offensive force’ for Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs infielder Patrick Wisdom reached a milestone on Sunday accomplished by only two other players in history.

Wisdom, 29, hit two home runs in the Cubs’ 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants, giving him seven long balls in his first eight starts with his new team. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only Cincinnati Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino and Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story have hit that many in their first eight games with a team.

“He’s been carrying us,” Cubs manager David Ross said after the game. “He’s a real offensive force for us right now. It seems like every time he gets up he’s going to do something really good to help the team. Real damage. What is that, seven home runs? Real power since he’s been up.”

Wisdom was a 2020 addition to the Cubs after stops in St. Louis and Texas, but he played in only two major league games last season. And before about a week ago, he had four career home runs. Cubs center fielder Ian Happ summed up the team’s strategy right now.

“If we can just get it to Wisdom with guys on base, we’ll be all right,” he said with a smile.

It's awesome. It's 36 PAs. I obviously will be thrilled if he's the next Muncy, Turner, Donaldson, Bautista, etc. It's 36 PAs.

My favorite "anybody can hit anything" example is Steve Dillard, a AAAA IF who landed on the Cubs bench for a few years. From Aug 3 to Aug 17, 1979, Dillard hit 471/517/843 in 59 PA with 5 HRs, 4 doubles and a shiny 422 BABIP (not that we knew what such a thing was then). For his career of 1115 PAs, Dillard had a 73 OPS+. Outside of thoee 59 PA, he had 8 HRs in 1056 PAs. I once went to the trouble of calculating what his career stats look like without that 2 weeks and I think he loses something like 10 OPS+ points.

To know how anonymous Dillard was ... he was on the Cubs the whole year but, through the first game of a double-header on Jul 22, had not started a single game. He had however hit 364/533/455 (surpise to me) in 32 PA. He started the 2nd game that day and the next 2, went 1 for 11 and hit 143/143/238 in that stretch before his outburst. After that he started the rest of Aug (Ted Sizemore and Mick Kelleher were the other options) and a few in Sept, hitting 167/211/167 in 78 PA. Anyway, while all that was going on, I assumed he was a young Cub phenom but he was a 28-year-old guy in his 3rd organization.

So anybody can hit anything in 32 or 59 PA.

Gary Gaetti for the Cubs in 1998 and then they go and bring him back for 1999. Had to be like 100 points of OPS+ difference between the two seasons and he played like 4 times as many games in 1999.

154 to 52 so a slight underestimate there. But if not for Gaetti's terrible performance, the Cubs could never have confirmed that Tyler Houston was not a ML 3B.

"Patrick Wisdom" sounds like the main character in a series of 1960s knock-off James Bond films, like Matt Helm. (Helm was played in the movies by Dean Martin, so who would've played Patrick Wisdom? Joey Bishop?)

Wisdom is already one of the OG members of the Revenge Society, which means that earlier headline really missed the chance to tell it like it is.

Perhaps the wrong thread, but man the difference between the character that Donald Hamilton wrote and the one Dean Martin played ...

Mind you I'm not sure you could have made Hamilton's Matt Helm in the 60s.

Wisdom always put up good numbers in the STL system. Pounded homers at every level. But for some reason was never considered MLB material. Not surprised at all he’s doing ok. I think he’ll be a solid bench bat/spot starter

Uh, no. As a 23-yo, he hit 237/294/406 as a repeater at AA Springfield in ~450 PAs. As a 25-yo, Wisdom hit 243/310/507 in a repeat year at AAA Memphis (6xx OPS the year before). He improved somewhat the next year, but a 850ish AAA OPS from 26-yo in his 7th year in the minors isn't really a guy to bet on.

He’s always hit homers - he maybe one dimensional but he can mash.

That would be "Our Man Flint" and "In Like Flint" with James Coburn as Flint although these were parodies of a sort. (It's not like Bond or Helm were exactly serious dramas.) Wiki tells me a third film "FlintLock" with screenplay by Harlan Ellison (he got around) was planned but never came to fruition, eventually tried as a TV pilot on ABC ("Dead on Target" foolishly dropping the Flint connection) without Coburn but it flopped and didn't get picked up.

EDIT: Oh, and Wisdom with another HR today.
